I enjoyed this a lot. The constant jumping is a cool way to make the game challenging. The level design and audio is great. Fantastic work as always :)

rombus 2018-12-03 04:27

Awesome graphics and music as always!

azlen 2018-12-03 05:40

Really nice controls, I played it for quite a while until I got stuck in a place that I couldn't jump down from (I'm guessing that this might have been the last level). Everything comes together very well, the music, graphics, and controls, lovely game overall.

muzzz29 2018-12-03 10:01

Really fun game mate, I'd buy it if you released it.

egordorichev 2018-12-03 10:13

@muzzz29 well technically, you can buy it on itch.io, but I guess you meant making more stuff for it? Also, I'm super sorry for the bug that happened to ya, fixing it rn.

muzzz29 2018-12-03 10:20

:P

bumdag 2018-12-03 10:37

I love the style! Thanks for sharing it!

valden 2018-12-03 12:16

Awesome little platformer ! Very polished (although there are some collision bugs), clever level design and nice artstyle. However I found that the Double jump was kinda broken, and made some levels far easier than they should be. It would have been nice if the later levels took the double jump into account.

Realy good entry overall !

nusan 2018-12-03 13:03

Great game, so much content. I really liked the mechanism, to fire when you land lead to interesting challenges, as with one-way plateforms. I did not really find a use for the "c" button. I could not finish the game as I was stuck in a later level, being on the top, unable to reach an enemy down bellow and so open the door. A reset room button may have solved this issue. Another impressive use of Pico 8, good job.

egordorichev 2018-12-03 13:12

Thanks, @nusan! What C button does, is it stops you from moving but moving AT ALL. Like you land. And then you can't move till you release it. Super sorry for that hardlock, I will for sure add a restart level button!

dunin 2018-12-03 14:43

Really impressive pico8 game! Well done!

(the music remind me an old Amstrad game: Sapiens)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp-clrlS05o

(but after listening to it, I don't find them so similar...)

egordorichev 2018-12-03 14:58

@dunin never heard that piece of music before, but you are right, for sure the composer used some of the methods I also used. And there is a lot of stuff for me to learn from it too, thanks for linking it!

tornoz 2018-12-03 18:28

This was a really fantastic experience, very original and the game feel was great. I got stuck somewhere and I think it was because the lock opening animation began and I inadvertently switched screen so I lost the key and the gate stayed closed, but maybe I'm not sure, maybe I'm just missing something. Didn't affect my notation anyway because the game is really good. I would totally play this on a longer format.

egordorichev 2018-12-03 19:10

@tornoz thanks so much, I just pushed a fix for that problem, the game autosaves if you want to go back and finish it. You got really close to the end, tho ;) The extra key is now in the part where you have to jump up with falling platforms to get a key. Also I moved the door from the exit so that you dont go off the screen while it opens.

And I'm glad, that you like it :)

jimbly 2018-12-03 22:04

Would have been nice if rooms stayed cleared after you clear then, instead of having to re-clear some on the way back through.

On rooms with keys, I found it easiest to die and just walk back out the door before it closes, instead of killing all the enemies though =).

I got stuck in the second to last room, missed killing a guy on the way up, and couldn't get back town to kill him, but refreshing the browser window seemed to reset the room for me (Tab didn't seem to do anything).

Quite enjoyable!

andreadbx 2018-12-04 00:04

Nice and cute game with that characteristic Pico-8 aestetics, keep up the good work :)

kaleido 2018-12-04 01:02

Incredible!!!

potatoez 2018-12-04 01:05

Polished very well, fun quick platformer. If it was on mobile it would be quite fun good game on the go

minibobbo 2018-12-04 03:19

I'm a sucker for PICO-8 games. Nice music and overall feel.

I got stuck on the screen that someone else earlier mentioned. I don't think that it is possible to get back down. It is a shame because I would have liked to finish it  jumpman.png

I think you win an award for the most interesting take on the theme

saucygames 2018-12-04 04:17

superb level design, i had the same issue on the level above, ggs

erebus 2018-12-04 05:08

Thanks so much for bringing this by my stream! I like the art a lot!

walterp 2018-12-04 05:11

Very nice and simple with great level design. Keep up the good work

selgeron 2018-12-04 05:46

This was super polished and very fun! I have the song stuck in my head with the lyrics just 'Jump-Shoot man, Jump-Shoot man' over and over again. I beat it in about 10 minutes or so and it was a blast.

mtanton 2018-12-04 05:58

Really fun game. It was pretty challenging with the jump mechanic! I liked the world design. Maybe the enemies should stay dead after you kill them once? Great work!

pandan 2018-12-04 05:58

https://i.imgur.com/G3WkOyW.png haah very nice game. I think it suffers from some minor balancing issues that playtesting could help. Later rooms were way easier than early ones, often you could just speed through them.

The flashing on death hurt my eyes D:

fenderbate 2018-12-04 09:47

Cool game, a bit hard, but enjoyable

xphere 2018-12-04 10:40

Really liked the game! Just hard enough to be challenging, but not too much. Had some fun reaching the end, thank you.

isaque-picao-sanches 2018-12-04 10:59

nice elegant PICO gfx

spigaru 2018-12-04 12:06

Your-game-are-awesome! No more words are needed.

earlybard 2018-12-04 13:35

Amazing entry, had a lot of fun playing it.

I particularly love the 2-bit style, the palette swapping, soundtrack, and level design. Really impressive!

arzi 2018-12-04 13:39

Looks nice, plays nice and the constant jumping is a good twist. Bonus for including the change palette key!

zhanna 2018-12-04 14:02

I actually loved playing it, even though it's kinda hard for me, but, well, for me. If you could improve on the gates it would be even better, I easily miss them by confusing with a rock...

t1a2z 2018-12-04 15:41

Such an awesome twist on familiar platforming mechanics! Smart level design, cool art style, fun music and Downwell vibes. Great work!

noa-calice 2018-12-04 16:30

That was a very nice little game :) ! I love those cute pixel art graphics and simple yet cool sound effects ! Keep it up !

egordorichev 2018-12-04 17:12

@noa-calice woah, thanks a lot :)

skullpixel 2018-12-04 18:17

Beyond the fact that I didn't really see the theme, it's amazing.

I'd have to say it's the second-best little metroidvania this jam.

egordorichev 2018-12-04 19:12

@skullpixel I guess your one is the best? ;D Also, the theme is that you sacrifice nice control scheme ;)

kerdelos 2018-12-04 20:27

Wow, the music is so cool. It fits really well with the jumpy character. I really loved that game, it's super enjoyable ! Some levels feels like they require way too much precision though and it's not always clear which wall gets unlocked by a key or by cleaning the room but i had such a good time playing this game ! Thank you !

der-finski 2018-12-04 22:53

pretty cool grafics

2018-12-05 00:41

Challenging game! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/7Oqdb7VuCRQ

snowdrama 2018-12-05 01:34

You saw me play it so :P Commenting here to get that sweet LD Karma haha. Good job! Super interesting core mechanic.

velvetlobster 2018-12-05 03:24

This reminds me a lot of LOVE from Fred Wood, which is a very challenging game like this one. The visuals and music set the mood perfectly. Great entry!

egordorichev 2018-12-05 05:22

Hahaha, yeah, @snowdrama, I'm glad you were able to beat it :) Also, does karma even do anything?

snowdrama 2018-12-05 05:43

@egordorichev Yeah, karma affects the "Balance" factor, people who vote on games, give feedback and get likes on posts all gain karma, which helps promote your game on https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/games

Not sure exactly how it factors in but I know there's a benefit to leaving feedback on other people's games

nalah 2018-12-05 10:17

This is really fun !

martincohen 2018-12-05 12:21

I love the feel of the retro in this one. The jump is hilarious! The idea is great too! Argh, you made me so happy with this one :D

popdaddygames 2018-12-05 13:09

As always- freakin incredible work!!!!

jens-steenmetz 2018-12-05 14:54

I love the art and music a lot! Very retro. Also, great concept and polishing

fobia 2018-12-05 16:19

Wow full adventure! Cool levels and style

shweep 2018-12-05 21:35

Really enjoyed it, just the right length too. My favorite is using the ceiling to rapid fire, really does make you appreciate the level design. Kind of felt the double jump nullified the challenge a little though if I'm going to be nitpicky.

bradur 2018-12-06 08:49

Terrific game! I died a lot but because the character is always jumping and shooting and the level restarts itself, dying doesn't feel too bad. I was unsure what purpose the palette change served but it was cool nonetheless. Unbelievable for a game made in 12 hours!

egordorichev 2018-12-06 09:34

@bradur palette change is just a thing that allows everyone to make game elements more visible to them, including color blind people, but its also a thing that gives a tiny bit of customisation :)

fattori 2018-12-06 11:21

like the whole thing, i didnt see toooo much of the theme in it but all the rest is on point, pretty fun game you got there =)

simon-rahnasto 2018-12-06 12:33

I came across this game and after playing it a bit I started thinking, "hey this reminds me of... wait could it be the same guy that made those great games in the previous LD's?" Checked your profile and sure enough it is. You have a unique style and always make really solid entries. This is no exception to that. Fantastic job!

arvejeitor 2018-12-06 13:18

Fantastic game! the art syle is so nice!

egordorichev 2018-12-06 13:58

@simon-rahnasto haha, thanks so much

bootak 2018-12-06 19:41

This game is fantastic! That is what PICO-8 game is supposed to be. Very simple, single innovation (controls in your case) and with cool music. I love it!

flashviper 2018-12-10 03:30

Other than some frustrating collision, the game was fun and felt rewarding! It gives you a look into what speedrunning can sometimes be like!

frescogusto 2018-12-10 18:21

nice game! was quite fun overall

niborious 2018-12-12 08:19

Absolutely captivating experience!

Capture.PNG

I really love the concept and the design. and it was interesting the whole way through. It kept suprising with how many more interesting mechanics there were to discover. The double jump power up kind of detracted from the coolness of the auto jump / sacrifice idea, but I guess since its still using just the arrow keys, as the controls suggest, that it is fine?

Amazing sound and visuals as well, I love the pico8 style!

randomphantom 2018-12-16 12:18

Plays really smoothly, the difficulty was just the right mix of challenge and fun, and the jump and shoot mechanics work really well! I feel this could totally be a mobile game given the really simple controls (so.. don't mind if I take some notes). One critique would be that the theme of sacrifice didn't really come through, otherwise it was a great game and super well done! I feel this is the best of your pico8 entries!

kleinzach 2018-12-16 17:42

A fun game, but I feel could have been made with almost any theme. Visuals were well done, and I liked the music quite a bit. Not exactly original, but I enjoyed in non the less.

jusw85 2018-12-17 16:26

Amazing game! Short and simple with really tight controls, I even beat the game a few times to try and speedrun it. Having an onscreen timer might be useful for speedrunners.

elysiagriffin 2018-12-18 21:05

I once implemented that "hold C to not jump" mechanic as a joke to mess with players. I never thought somebody could make it work! Bug Report: I can't see my bullets in one of the colour palettes, the one with the stark white background

egordorichev 2018-12-20 09:19

@blubberquark well it's not a trick, tbh, you have to wait till you land, and then you won't jump anymore. But it kind of worked like a trick, haha.

acaral 2018-12-22 16:26

I loved the concept of the sacrified keyboard. very funny

ethan-kennerly 2018-12-24 22:00

When I timed my jumps to pass the spikes, I felt skillful. If you continue to develop this, when I saw the bats, I was unclear what to do. I didn't notice an interaction with the bats, so I ignored the bats.

d-studios 2018-12-25 01:32

One Concept I Liked: * I liked how the music sounded good as it sounded varied and it did not sound repetitive.

One Concept I Did Not Like: * I did not like how certain aspects of the game were not explained well. This game needs a better tutorial.

ryjcio 2018-12-26 01:49

Very impressive for the game made in 48hours. Perfect harmony and balance if we consider how fast this game was developed. You did great job focusing on the right things and not carrying about unneeded backstory or not related to gameplay mechanics.

levidsmith 2018-12-28 01:21

I'll admit that I like Pico-8 games because I know the controls will be simple and the gameplay won't be overly complicated. I like all the mechanics, like double jump and the disappearing blocks which keep the game interesting. I gave up at the point with all the bridges that go upward which take you back to the room above. I'm not sure what the point of changing colors is, so I just assumed that it was some inside joke.
