LD45 — Start with nothing

Mastafoon! by Local Minimum 2019-10-09T02:06:15Z

I think you did a good job giving the graphics a consistent style and the small animations helped the feel of it a lot. It crashed for me on what I think was the last level - I saw the dialogue about the smell of stars and then both the map box and dialogue box went black. The cones felt a bit chaotic for me - I couldn't work out how their patrol loops worked or what they would do when seeing a spider, so my approach was less trial and error and more just errors until something happened to work. Conversely, it felt good outsmarting that good-looking arch.

Making inventory items reduce your available actions was a nice touch and made the whole thing more thoughtful. Good job!

cmd && cqr by maniac 2019-10-13T23:23:10Z

It sounds like a really interesting concept, but the game window is just white when I run the game :(

New.AI by smilewood 2019-10-13T22:45:10Z

The areas you focused on are great - I especially liked the very friendly jump sound, and the walk animation was very effective given how simple it was. I agree with others that the checkpoints could have been closer together, or maybe that some challenges could have been removed altogether; waiting for saws to be in the right place can get tedious on the 4th or 5th attempt.

Overall though, a great concept and well polished for a 48 hour game!

Let There Be Light by Pagi 2019-10-09T01:38:23Z

I agree that as a simulator, it's good fun, but the victory conditions don't encourage you to do fun things. I found myself "failing" a level a few times just to see what I could make, and then putting all the planets next to each other once I wanted to pass the level. I'd be interested to see how you develop the idea to make winning as enjoyable as failing.

Martis Opibus by eXpl0it3r 2019-10-13T23:32:09Z

Well done for releasing something!

Checkboxes by mandrilltiger 2019-10-13T03:44:33Z

Fantastic idea and very well excecuted, nice one! On the last level, I managed to just sprint for the exit without doing anything clever, but other than that each level felt nicely crafted.

Tardigrades on the Moon by bassguitarbill 2019-10-13T03:33:17Z

I liked all the little touches you gave it - animating the channels filling in, giving the tardigrades a variety of expressions, and the changing music. They all really helped add to the ambience.

Finished Raccoon Bikini Game by D5R 2019-10-13T16:52:31Z

Great job all around - the music, art and gameplay all worked well together, and I think you made one of the most engaging credit sequences I've seen in a game. Nice one!

Dungeon Doggo by Arty 2019-10-13T22:54:41Z

I like the idea of getting your power from dogs and the music and the art brings it together into a very cute little package. I think it's a little too unforgiving to send the player back to the start of the game when they die - I died twice after getting the annoying dog and didn't want to have to keep starting again, so quit at that point.

It was a good take on the theme, well done!

Not Even A Jump Yet by Nikita Demidov 2019-10-13T23:18:16Z

Wow, you squeezed a lot of ideas into a very short game jam! I think some of the challenges might have been better if the player had more opportunity to practice before a very difficult section. For example, the first time we see the yellow gems for dashing, we have to dash perfectly between two red blocks, land on and climb up a wall before dashing between another two red blocks. We didn't have the opportunity to investigate quite how the mechanic worked before being expected to use it nearly perfectly. GMTK has some great videos on level design: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBmIkEvEBtA), talking about how you can first introduce ideas and then develop on them so that the player doesn't feel overwhelmed.

Difficulty aside, I think you did a great job combining the abilities to make some interesting (and very challenging) challenges, well done!

System Honck by BenevolentDrone 2019-10-13T23:46:49Z

I love the blend of ascii with smooth animation - the wing flap was lovely. One shot kills felt a little punishing, but otherwise a great experience, nice one!

Darkness Is My Enemy by Abir160201 2019-10-13T02:40:39Z

The narrow beam of the torch really added to the platforming, good job! I'd be interested to see how the game changed of you had to drop the flashlight to pick other objects up - I'd imagine it could make for some interesting puzzles/challenges.

Nice touch with the ending, too.

The Many Curses of Kepi by SnailRhymer 2019-11-01T00:27:54Z

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Platformers aren't usually my thing, so I'm not sure if this is something I'm going to continue to work on, but it's been great seeing other people's reactions to it. Thanks again!

Niki the Ghost by interstateeight 2020-10-06T12:17:39Z

I agree that the movement could have been more responsive, especially in a game like this where you might have to repeat stages again. I managed to get to the third level, but the fates doomed Niki to an eternity of ghostdom:

ghost.png

The core gamplay was fun, and I really liked the music building as you placed more gems!

Chronolings by edomiyamoto 2020-10-06T13:48:31Z

It wasn't until reading the comments that I realised there was any change between replays (and I still don't know what the change is). I won on the second loop by building a single wood production building and then three cannons, which made it feel like the game was more about clicking on a single building than it was about building a city. I think the game could have done with stronger passive income and less repetitive clicking.

The looks were really nice - I especially liked the stylised clouds drifting across.

The Toroidal Tower by nanolotl 2020-10-07T12:57:50Z

I enjoyed this a lot - it was great fun unravelling all the paths through the rooms. I managed to beat it eventually, but I got massively stuck by the combination locks.

Spolers: I brute forced the first (and much later noticed it was in height order), but couldn't see any clues for the 6-digit code. As far as I can tell the code is the order of the rooms on the top level, starting at 0, but I was thrown off by the first code starting with the same number of the room it's in. After e.g the introduction of the gun where you're very effectively taught to shoot blocks, I thought the combination lock could be better hinted.

Overall though, I had a great time with this!

Color Coded by Random-storykeeper 2020-10-06T22:52:50Z

The wrap-around walls were cool, but a little disorienting. It'd be nice if the game were to slow down for a moment when you go through. Taking away the player's choice of gun was a neat idea, though it did leave me feeling quite powerless. Overall though, good job!

Looper's Arena by Jason200101 2020-10-06T22:24:42Z

The light mechanic made for an interesting challenge!

The Turning Point by zaibakk 2020-10-07T10:41:32Z

Very nice! It felt a bit odd having "checkpoints" in an email chain, but I otherwise really enjoyed this.

WHAT I SAW by Angela He 2020-10-14T01:47:11Z

The art and audio really come together to set an amazing tone! I felt like it got a bit hard towards the end, which undermined the narrative a little - the mirror copies get less enigmatic when you're trying to lure them into pits just so you can progress. That said, I was certainly relieved when I finally got out; the mirror-hopping mechanic had sold the idea of getting lost in the mirror very well. Great job!

Seeker by NateTheGreat 2020-10-14T00:46:38Z

I really enjoyed the first few endings, as each path taught you something new and you could look forward to finding out where to apply it. For things like the maze though, I can't imagine I would have ever solved it without hints!

Purifier by Extrone 2020-10-06T14:08:20Z

I like the clean and polished aesthetic. I tried to complete it twice: the first time I fell through the floor and the second time an enemy promoted itself to chairman before I could get to the boss (and it wouldn't come down).

The Flying Tree by DavidPeterWorks 2020-10-06T12:06:56Z

Really nice art and atmosphere! I never felt like I had much agency and I died a lot without ever getting more than two trees planted. It feels like having the trees act as checkpoints would have made the game a bit more forgiving - I wanted to play more, but felt I couldn't really progress.

LifeLoop by Dominium11 2020-10-07T11:51:55Z

I think you did a good job of efficiently conveying the monotony of the loop with a few simple actions. That tight design coupled with good visuals and audio made it very effective at what you set out to do. Good job!

Layers of time by Kaldrin 2020-10-07T10:55:35Z

A really cool game with some neat puzzles! After I beat one of the levels with a past me (I think it was the first one where you have to do this), it vanished and I was locked in the next level without a character to control.

LÖÖPS by Tamail 2020-10-06T11:56:47Z

Very charming!

AUTOLOOP by Kpedatte 2020-10-07T11:17:46Z

Really nice music! I didn't really realise what was going on with the upgrades until I'd beaten the game -it wasn't until the credits appeared that I started looking at other parts of the screen and saw all the "auto"s. Maybe there could be some way to highlight them as they change? Overall, a very atmospheric game!

Loop of Death by Ryano 2020-10-14T00:51:59Z

Simple, but fun! It'd be nice to be able to restart the game without using the mouse to really get in the groove of it.

Mandala Spa by Danielcmcg 2020-10-06T11:39:10Z

mandala1.pngmandala2.png

Very relaxing, I liked it a lot! I was a bit thrown by the angles being in radians as opposed to degrees - I started with what I thought was a pretty modest 32 which turned out to not be modest at all. Beyond that though, I think it's a really nice idea and executed well.

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-06T12:20:02Z

Thanks!

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-06T13:11:15Z

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see if I can make the driving scene more intuitive in an update once the jam's over.

"One man's joke is another man's deeply insightful and groundbreaking art piece on the human condition", or however that saying goes.

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-07T10:11:50Z

@etrealjunior Thanks, and I'll be sure to check it out!

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-07T11:30:18Z

@Snotax, @nanolotl Thanks for the feedback! At the traffic lights, you just need to hold the left mouse button down to drive forwards - it really goes to show the value of playtesting!

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-07T11:38:27Z

@pilcrow There are actually two endings (or arguably more, if you count just quitting the game) and even multiple new game+ runs. Unfortunately, we didn't have much time left to balance the game, so it's quite hard to lose (letting the bar at the top of the screen go all the way to empty) and pretty tedious to "win" (I wouldn't recommend sitting through five work days to anyone who values their time).

Glad you enjoyed the art!

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-07T12:08:20Z

Thanks for the feedback @mr-greenhat, it sounds like a lot of people's problems could have been fixed by having the car more visible at the start. If only we'd playtested! Glad you enjoyed it anyway!

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-14T00:02:04Z

@obi-one, @eden-shazar Thanks! Playing it again myself, I realise I left the difficulty quite a bit higher than intended (submission deadlines can do that to you). There's an updated version here:

https://snail-rhymer.itch.io/stuck

where you might have more luck being "successful" in reaching the New Game+ (though I wouldn't necessarily recommend you try).

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-14T01:29:25Z

@zaibakk Haha, yes! I liked the more optimistic angle yours took.

Stuck by SnailRhymer 2020-10-14T01:35:54Z

@angela-he Thanks! I don't think we could have hoped for much higher praise than "god-tier"! It looks I accidentally opted us out of mood instead of humour - here's hoping that people somehow found the game hilarious.

Progress by Anant Ahuja 2020-10-06T12:28:36Z

It's clear you put a lot of work into the graphics, but I feel it may have come at the expense of gameplay depth. It was simple fun and the story was okay, but I feel like there was the potential for more.

LoopOS by Rustywolf 2020-10-06T12:58:47Z

Really enjoyed this! Mine also froze for a while before the park webcam loaded, but it got there eventually (windows 10, firefox 81.0.1). Great job!

Danger Beat by rhoff95 2020-10-06T22:34:20Z

I'd just started worrying how much health I had left and wasn't looking forward to starting again when I realised how the health worked. Great idea, and really well executed!

Car Looper by Snotax 2020-10-07T12:05:13Z

I think it's a neat puzzle game and the graphics and music are solid, but I often felt like I wanted more freedom to be creative. Maybe having more open maps with fewer trees and a few track pieces scattered around could make for some more open-ended puzzles (if you were to take this game further). Either way, great job!

Temporarium by Eden Shazar 2020-10-14T00:16:44Z

It's a really nice world you built - it could have been amazingly atmospheric with some sound. Great work on the art and the interesting gameplay idea!

Ayumi's Day by Capt.Theo 2020-10-06T14:23:28Z

I really liked the low frame-rate animation of the character, but being locked into the animation often made it feel like I wasn't really in control. Once I got used to releasing the spacebar to time my jumps (as opposed to pressing it), I had some fun flipping about. The music and graphics tied togther nicely for a nice, atmospheric feel.

Resurrection by etrealjunior 2020-10-07T10:11:06Z

On the first stage, it'd be nice if you could either go diagonally when pressing two directions at once or at have the latest button press override the current movement (it felt quite unintuitive that when e.g. moving down, I couldn't quickly move to the side without releasing down).

The art style and overall theming was really nice and made for a lovely little loop!

Endless by StinkyVoet 2020-10-07T11:02:44Z

Congrats on your first jam! I liked the fluidity of the movement - it played especially nicely running up the ramps and jumping. It was a bit of a pain having to use the mouse to activate levers, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Catch the Higgs boson by Obi One 2020-10-13T23:48:18Z

A neat idea! As others have said, it'd be nice to have a bit more strategy available - the spin idea sounds very interesting.

Infinite Stairs by Muktada Creations 2020-10-06T13:22:02Z

A really cool idea, and I enjoyed it once I'd read the explanation. I'd be interested to see if you could help the player work out what they should be doing in-game, maybe adding a "no" before the prompt if the player is going the wrong way?

You gave the endless stairs a great atmosphere!
