LD46 — Keep it alive

The Lost of Nix by Tygrak 2020-04-21T13:16:55Z

Very moody game with nice music. The abilities are pretty cool! The colours are very dark, making it hard to see what is going on. I suggest some other way of managing movement between encounters, because using the turn based system for normal movement is quite tedious.

Keep the Garden Alive by gamepopper 2020-04-21T21:51:01Z

Nice game, got to 8 minutes something and got bored, but it works! I liked the animations a lot, this kind of composite animations made of distinct blocks fascinate me. The gameplay was hectic and the controls quite good.

Morituri Combonaturi by TheOZoneBE 2020-04-21T15:07:12Z

Pretty cool game with an unusual setting. The sound and screams of the public do wonders for the mood of the game! I do wish that some more gladiator types existed, as well as some way to lose.

It looked very pixelated and compressed to me:

The Unicorn and the need for coffee..! by INCD021 2020-04-20T13:50:19Z

Nice game! I like the fiddlyness of everything, I like the sounds, I like the endings. The description tricked me: it is Phil who needs coffee to survive, the unicorn seems pretty immortal to me!

Zombie Cure by thx4nothing 2020-04-21T18:18:09Z

Pretty nice, better than I expected! I like the darkness of it all, and the scavenging aspect. The voicemade sound effects are funny! I collected 7 first aid kits but I am not sure what they are for, did not seem to be consumed when I was healing the friend character... The gunplay needs some work, right not bullets shot behave like little weakly thrown stones.

I managed to win on my first try!

F E E D by Delightfullymad 2020-04-20T16:19:54Z

I really liked it! Great aesthetic that fits with the setting, nice easy controls, direct and understandable mechanics, and it fits well with the compo theme!

I won the survival mode on my first playthrough: I quickly hit a good balance of money and notoriety, then after T:450 got greedy for more cultists to feed the god faster and lost... I suggest making the game a bit more zoomed in, to better see the god's appearance. Also too little time is given to its evolutive phases, I burned through them so fast and only got the final form, where the only change was an increasingly white noise effect in the eldritch room.

The game over screen is also a nice touch, I managed to read it :alien:

One Day Outside by romgerman 2020-04-21T18:02:54Z

Aaaaahh the game is so interesting but I got stuck! I took all items and got to the needles part, then chose a wrong command and the game is stuck on "ERROR: Not all steps finished". The idea of redoing all steps and getrting stuck again is unattractive...

Itr feels like some eastern european fiction with a dodgy english translation, I love it! So moody...

Pet Slime! by staircase27a 2020-04-21T13:53:28Z

It was interesting, and gave the feeling of looking at microorganisms through a microscope. I think that if the lead moved 1:1 with the mouse the game would be more enjoyabe, without sacrificing difficulty. Also food spawns felt scarce, but might be intentional so the player has to udecide which slimes can go hungry and which cannot.

🌸 Conway's Garden Life by joonamo 2020-04-20T15:09:15Z

Smart concept, well executed, polished. Good job! A short popup that explains the Game of Life rules would add a bit of user friendliness.

Dying Spark by snail 2020-04-21T13:08:57Z

Cannot launch the game because it is missing unityplayer.dll FYI: in ludum dare you have to rate other people's games in order to have yours be shown to others, and thus rated.

A Torch in the Cave by snesgaard 2020-04-21T21:22:51Z

Nice little platformer that could become a nice little proper game. I liked the torch light effects and the character animation. Some sound effects would enhance the experience!

Garden Guardian by LeYamez 2020-04-20T16:40:25Z

A pretty nifty idea! I wished for a couple more flower types, even if they worked the same, just for making a prettier garden :)

I found two bugs:

- if you drop a flower in the bottom brown UI area (where you see the flower selection and the various bars), the flower is spawned under it. It should not spawn and the water cost not spent.

- if you drop a flower too close to another one, it will not be spawned, but the water cost will be spent anyway.

Keep It Alive! by SeriouslyCrunchy 2020-04-21T13:41:59Z

Cute little game. I really like the dialogues between drone and facility, as well as the drone's expressions. Since controlling the drone is very challenging it seems that the safest way to play is just trying to stay as vertical as possible while avoiding enemies and platforms, since there is plenty of fule and it recharges even when airborne.

Bloody Fantastic by mikejzx 2020-04-21T11:31:31Z

An interesting game, it is quite hard though. Graphics are essentil but bive the right vibe, music is nice as well. I think that needing to collect the blood cells adds a lot of difficulty. Just having them pile up in the main blood vessel could be more interesting, and loss would consist in having the vessel clogged up. Otherwise increase the speed at chich the "collector" can move when the cells are coming faster (the present speed increase is not enough), otherwise it simply becomes very hard very fast.

CHARGER! by Symphonia 2020-04-20T15:32:14Z

Interesting idea, too bad that the frantic gameplay does not mix well with the funny text popups: no time to read them! It does adhere to the theme pretty well too. Also there was no sound as far as I could tell.

It Lives by Sbug 2020-04-21T17:47:14Z

Impressive game for 48H! Good job on the rps mention.

I really enjoyed the setting and sound design, and I am a sucker for katamari like games. The only bug I could find was that when the creature got too large the shadows of its arms would glitch.

Corporate Slave Rabbit by JoshuaRabbit 2020-04-21T14:22:46Z

Interesting game with a message that I find naive and self-defeating. Seems autobiographical. I liked the sound design, and the graphics are ok. Suggestion: after asking the player if they would rather sleep or draw, put "sleep" and "draw" as possible answers, not "yes" or "no", because the player is making a choice between two options, not answering a yes or no question (e.g. "do you want apples or pears?" will be answered with either of those fruits, not with a yes/no).

Lost Beneath by Honey Pony 2020-04-20T20:00:19Z

An interesting and hard platformer. I like the sound and the graphics. Strange how when I made the gamefullscreen my view expanded without any zoom, so I guess that thoise with smaller screens will have a harder time playing this.

My biggest gripe with this game is the floatyness of the character. It os ok to have floaty jumps etc, part of the challenge, but this character seems to have very little inertia to the floor. What happens is that precise postitioning for vertical jumps is unnecessary hard, because the character just never stays put.

I see this having a future beyond this compo, even if it were to be small.

Babysitter by Tadeas Paule 2020-04-20T13:58:39Z

Quite enjoyable! I like the baby creature, and I like the gameplay even if I find it to be a bit on the easy side. Using the mouse to shield the player from bullets is novel, givin it that danmaku flavour. Definitely needs audio to enhance the experience!

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-21T14:32:14Z

Pretty interesting concept, the idea of multitasking precision clicking alongside a semi-rhythm game mechanic makes for some compelling gameplay. It is pretty hrd to read the letters that pop up and click the enemies at the same time, so I suggest either colour-coding the letter popup so that they are easier to recognise, or even having them always appear in the same place. Thei can get faster with time of course.

X33D by Ben Taylor 2020-04-20T10:41:33Z

An interesting thingamajig to leave in the background while working, to check on occasionally for a little break (thankfully I can mute single tabs). I like how the x33ds grow almost like crystals. It is really obscure, which is ok as an experience. Thankfully real breeding of plants is not this incomprehensible!

Nemysis by Crispy Chicken 2020-04-20T14:45:42Z

I loved it! Scored 8805, played for much longer than I thought! This is such a nice game with a great feedback loop. The need to manually collect dropped souls before they disappear is very smart, forcing the player to choose between spawning things or getting more resources.

The next wave button is not clear to me. If it is space, well it does not seem to work.

Incredible job for a compo!

Keep it Alive by kadams 2020-04-20T21:55:23Z

The tutorial was pretty good, but if I am not mistaken it does not address the "poop meter". The game is basic but enjoyable, with essential graphics. Showering is cool! The great number of bulletts that I can shoot by spamming lmb makes things a bit easy.

The barren submission page and itch make me suspicious though, why are they so empty?

Cupid's Arrow Inc. Difficult Cases Division by SolitudeDude 2020-04-20T22:02:55Z

Interesting little game that I seem to suck at, I lost at turn 3 after two 10 cards popped out. Great idea letting the player choose the couple's name! I found a bug in the "slept with someone else" card text, the macro (?) referring to the user specified name seems incomplete.

Super Survival Ball by Quinn_Patrick 2020-04-20T23:15:38Z

Woah I expected little but found such an addicting game! The music is fitting and the sound effects great and clear. The graphics are nice and crispy, just as I like them. The gameplay has such a nice feedback loop, and I really like hot every ball has the same bounce frequency, creating a rhythm in the bouncing that changes with each ball added or lost, and puts you in a trance-like state.

My biggest problem would be the background, which I found very bright and after a while it hurt my eyes a little. I suggest an option for a less bright planet in the background, or even a very dark background for "pro tournament" mode! Nonetheless, all the above plus having to read some text scrolling in the background really make the game that more frantic!

Sadness by siegMAYer 2020-04-20T11:36:42Z

What is the sadness number for? Why is the character so sad when his happiness value is 1000x the sadness value? I wanted to finish the game but even with 50k happiness per second reaching 5million happiness for getting married was too much. No real challenge. Nice graphics and mood though, although they clash strongly with the gameplay from what I experienced.

Planto by Btmodz 2020-04-20T23:24:58Z

I really liked this one! Very likeable characters, nice music and sound effects. Poor Planto is gonna die of hunger anyway, but travelling to the right side was worth it  @btmodz Is it you who I ate there in pinkland?

Haiku, and the Mother Virus by Mister Morris Games 2020-04-20T16:29:53Z

Great visuals, and I liked the synesthetic sound effects that blended into the music. I also think that waves of enemies would be better, or in any case some moments of respite. otherwise the player always ends up in front of mother virus, alternating between shooting left and right, without any real interesting gamepay left and no real challenge. Heavily super crate box inspired.

Keep. The. Spike. Alive. by K4V0X 2020-04-20T09:57:39Z

Nice graphics! I see some death stranding inspiration in the character design. I tried the game three times, fed some powercells to the spike, picked up some items that I do not know how to use (E picks up, G drops, V swaps... how do I use the items?), and the enemies swarm you quite fast slowing down movement enormously. The game crashed twice while swappin items.

Keep. The. Spike. Alive. by K4V0X 2020-04-20T10:25:51Z

@k4v0x I managed to replicate it: you have to try and swap items when you have none. I grabbed some items and swapped them, then dropped them and tried swapping empty handed, and the game crashed.

In the meantime the game started to make sense. The biggest problem is the tutorial which omits important info concerning items, e.g. the gun shoots by itself, the sword deals damage to enemies, the bucket of paint can cover up the slime, the slime puddles are slippery and so on. If you improved on that I think that the game would have a greater impact. I suggest adding some more info here on the ld46 game page.

a Friend of fire by GreenDuck 2020-04-20T11:57:33Z

Such a beautiful looking game that truly adheres to this jam's theme. I had a problem when trying to pick up the sword because I was not touching the handle. Since the character was not picking it up, I just went around the level... so I suggest to make the sword a pickup as soon as you touch any part of it, not only the handle (even if it is more thematic).

Little Restaurant of Horrors by Goldfish Games 2020-04-21T15:27:24Z

I liked it, a proper micro game for a jam. The ending was predictable but enjoyable! The mood is set very well. All the stats of the customers made little sense to me, and in general the process of choosing who to "send away" could be made easier by showing the stats of the customer you overlap with, and pressing space to "send them away".

It Alive by Mathurin 2020-04-20T15:44:10Z

Interesting gameplay, even if I found the reversed mouse aiming a bit confusing. Must be because I am using a trackpad at the moment. I really enjoyed the graphics and mood, quite surreal. I suggest to make the "end level flower" clearer, and possibly to avoid confusing the player on which direction points to the level's end when a level starts (e.g. in leve 2 I went to the right, fought some enemies and wondered why the level was not ending, then went to the left and found out that it was the right direction.) I find the "smart" interpretation of the theme a bit tryhard though.

Keep it alive by Sk1nnydave 2020-05-01T22:25:25Z

Cool idea, but getting to anything other than acid seems impossible or at least extremely hard, even when pushing the enemies that pop up from the 4 corners in front of the queen to be eaten. Nice graphics and nice music. The ability to dig would be cool.

Type it alive by Adry 2020-04-20T10:09:33Z

I like it! I really like the concept and honestly think that you could turn this in a nice little commercial game.

The game does not seem to fit in my standard fullHD monitor, it has an excessive vertical height it seems.

Suggestions:

- have real words instead of gibberish. It would make for some good typing training!

- mke it so that when a building is in a lower "tier" (e.g. red lifebar, yellow lifebar etc.) the text to write is shorter. This was true for newly built buildings, but when I would power them up they would always ask for a lot of letters, even when they were back to their last lifebar. This meant that it was pretty hard to keep them alive, since I am not the fastest typer.

- fix the game window size.

Kitty King by matt2728 2020-04-20T19:37:43Z

A cute reinterpretation of rock paper scissors. Would be cool on touch devices! I suggest making the three draggable figures easier to distinguish from the enemies, because when the screen gets crowded they all mix up and the player can easily mistake an enemy for a player character.

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T10:45:39Z

@ben-taylor Thanks for the kind words, glad that you liked the art! Pretty rough, but it is where I ended up spending more than half of the time. @njm-games Thank you! First ludum dare but not my first jam, been some years since I last joined one though.

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T12:03:50Z

@prackli @sot @saviqq Thanks a lot for playing my game and for your feedback! I am glad that you liked it. Concerning the bucket, I added it later, it is literally a sprite that sticks to the character. I needed something to indicate that water had been picked up, but time was running low, so... here we are haha! I agree that the objective is not very clear, and the positive feedback of watering the plants is also pretty weak. Should have added some more animations! The original scope was bigger, but I had to cut a lot and basically retool the assets I made to create a slimmer, more minimalistic game that could be finished in time. I will consider turning background music on at start of the game, keeping M for toggling it.

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T12:11:46Z

@incd021 Thnks for the feedback! It is winnable, I will put a strategy guide in the description with my proven watering method :potable_water:

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T12:45:52Z

Sooooooo it seems that now the player character is moving much slower than when I tested it yesterday, no wonder that it is hard to win... I will do some debugging and upload a fixed version.

Thank you all for the feedback.

edit: fixed (or seems so).

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T15:26:58Z

@zypo Glad that you liked the game! Thanks for the feedback, I will keep it in mind if I keep working on this game, as to ive a clearer indication of winning. You are welcome, web based games are better for game jams imho

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-20T19:30:55Z

@mathurin Glad that you liked it! There is some music, press M to turn it on. The bird noises are a good idea!

@matt2728 Thanks for the kind words. Those steps were made by patting a bunch of clothes with my hand, the aim was exactly to have a softer sound  There is indeed a bit of an issue with player feedback in the game. It might not be noticeable but the bucket can be emptied only near the plants, the idea was to show that yes, you emptied the bucket near the roots, so you gave them water. I will think of future enhancements!

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-21T10:15:03Z

@matt-burton Thank you! The tree originally had no face and was just based on the idea of large, ancient sacred trees, but I later gave it a face for some extra player feedback and to fill up its bark with something interesting. It is indeed reminiscent of the deku tree, as well as the tree boss in kirby games.

@tigerfinch Thanks! I always try to keep my games as text-free as possible to make them universally playable. Using symbols also forces me to distill the game rules to their essentials.

@masterpose Thank you! The walking bug never happened to me, but since you commented I did a small fix in movement for other reasons, I suspect that it will have resolved that as well. Please let me know if the bug persists! For watering, the bucket can be emptied only near the roots and has an animation and water noise, if you see no change in the plant it only means that it needs more water :)

@goblinkingmatt Glad that you enjoyed the game! You are not the first one to address the feedback problem. Originally I wanted to implement an easy and a hard mode, so that players could either relax and just have the plants grow very easily (so watering would give almost instant feedback), or have a more challenging experience where the player had to water plants very efficiently to see any progress. In the end I opted for a middle ground, mainly to keep it simple and to be on schedule for the compo.

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-21T13:22:43Z

@jason-woerner Thanks for your feedback! I can understand the confusion. Keep watering the plants until they grow, even then they are healthy, and you will reach the game's victory screen. I did have an additional mechanic in mind for this issue, but did not manage to put it into the game: there would be weeds growing, that would prevent the flowers from growing themselves. So the player would have to water the wilting flowers, and pull out the weeds to let the flowers grow. How does this sound?

Sacred Gardener by Hanamigi 2020-04-22T11:33:01Z

@honey-pony @snail Thank you for your extensive feedback feedback! I am very very glad that you got what I was going for, even if I had to cut the scope quite a bit. The idea was indeed to create the experience of caring for a garden by doing repetitive tasks, without immediate feedback, trying to put the player in a situation where they question what they are doing, if they are doing things correctly and if something is wrong with the game world itself.

I think that I would need better sound design and some other changes to convey the feeling better, because based on the feeback I am getting the players do not play the game with the expectation of an experience to be taken slowly and methodically, so I have to set them up. I purposefully avoided any text explanation because it would defeat the purpose of the experience, which is also why I tried to keep the instructions as text free as possible. My idea is that such a game would be playable with as little text as possible, but with mechanics, graphics and sound setting up the player's expectations.

BUBBLE BOY by NEKORUMA 2020-04-20T23:03:07Z

Wow, a great little fast tamagotchi experience! I really liked the graphics, with a high res console and very well done low res screen (play it fullscreen people!). I liked the console design, with a shape reminiscent of the digimon mini consoles that I had as a kid. Also the sound was very good. I really have no complaints! A true and tried formula, but well executed!

Keep E.T Alive by Saviqq 2020-04-20T11:17:10Z

This is nightmare fuel, a bleeding and pooping E.T. who has a beer IV drip, with accompanying noises... Still, very adherent to the theme and indeed playable! The concept could translate well to mobile, with touch-dragging for item use.

Forest Frenzy by Catomag 2020-04-21T12:27:17Z

A strange game with obscure mechanics. Why do trees catch fire spontaneously? I like the forest layout though!
