LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Terra Nova by LTyrosine 2020-10-18T13:36:33Z

Interesting take on the theme. The game has a very nice atmosphere as well and a nice kinda board-game-feel to it. The gameplay is also quite addictive once you understand it.

I reckon it could do with some better tutorialisation though. It took me a little while to figure out the whole building system - for some reason it didn't occur to me I could click the arrows to select different types of buildings. 🙃 A more guided tutorial would help with this kind of game with so many interacting mechanics. And as others have mentioned, speed controls would be useful. Maybe event he ability to pause while I'm slowly figuring the game out 😅 (hmm though maybe that would take away from the challenge of the real-time aspect)

I saw above you're looking to overhaul it. Definitely looking forward to this!

Shadow Loop by Mekuri 2020-10-06T17:32:54Z

Always nice to see a hacking simulator. The UI is nice and responsive and the mail-based job system is great for worldbuilding (I guess inspired by Uplink, which is good since it's the gold-standard for this kind of game)

Main issue afaict is that it starts off way too easy and takes ages to pick up. Since the time pressure is usually the main draw with hacking games I reckon it could go a long way to start off with a very low time limit so it's still fun and challenging early on, and then make later missions harder through more complicated minigames.

Shadow Loop by Mekuri 2020-10-06T20:26:35Z

@mekuri If you do end up making a post-jam version then count me as looking forward to it 😁

The operator by Hadik 2020-10-14T23:53:33Z

Pretty smooth gameplay here, and very pretty graphics on the planet. Was going to come here and say it reminded me of Osmos, but it seems someone has beaten me to the punch! I think a couple more mechanics or types of hazards thrown into the mix would help the gameplay variety - at the moment the game feels quite slow with not much to break up the long upload time. But otherwise it's very nicely polished!

Hope/Remember by arzi 2020-10-06T14:24:53Z

As a big fan of the colour purple I approve. I didn't manage to break the loop in the end (if there even is a way) but the puzzling is pretty satisfying. Music is very catchy too.

BULLETS FROM THE PAST by Cambryx 2020-10-07T20:00:44Z

Probably the best executed take on bullet-hell-with-looping that I've seen. The artwork has a very satisfying feel and I very much appreciate the use of dynamic music, adding more layers as you add more past selves. Dynamic music is no doubt not easy to implement in such a short time frame.

I did find one bug: when I fire at a turret from point blank range, the bullet sometimes seems to pass straight through.

Also the point above about tutorialising farther bullets doing more damage is something I'd agree with. I didn't realise until I read Wendel's comment, but it certainly makes a lot more sense now!

Electronic Toy Racecar Championship by UncleGubbsy 2020-10-07T10:10:22Z

Nice angle and visuals, and the handling is good too. Would be really satisfying to see the care derail rather than fade to black. 🙂

Loopy Loops by ded 2020-10-23T23:43:06Z

Haha, very nice 😁 Obviously it's short but you genuinely got me to laugh out loud when I saw the number of O's in the instruction text increasing. And nice sound effects as well!

RevolveWare by Fatsheep 2020-10-06T23:23:21Z

If one game isn't enough, why not make 15? By far the most unique game I've played in this jam, and the low-res 3D aesthetic is nostalgic as hell! The sound effects also give the whole thing a really humorous vibe. I can't think of too much wrong with it (which speaks to the game's quality), but I supposed if anything I feel like obstacles in the barrel roll minigame could be telegraphed a bit better.

The Perfect Day by tipyx 2020-10-06T10:26:09Z

Very tough but also satisfying puzzle game once you understand how it works. The music, sound, graphics and mechanics are all very nice, it's just a little difficult to understand how the game works.

It wasn't clear what the notepad was for - at first I thought it was some kind of automation thing but since it's just for taking actual notes it ends up being confusing. Maybe if the ability to upgrade the number of lines was removed it would be a bit more clear (since you can easily cheat the limit by using pen and paper anyway).

A lot of fun once you understand how it works though. I'd just echo what people said about needing more instructions.

System Reboot by Toulou 2020-10-06T12:25:53Z

Pretty much the same as what other people are saying: the mood is top notch and I really like the unique interpretation of the theme. It's just the attacking system that makes it difficult to play.

Last Trip of the Monorail! by INCD021 2020-10-07T20:32:22Z

Short but sweet. The dialogue is the highlight I think; it has this kind of witty charm to it, which is super important for this kind of game.

Hoop Knight by lectvs 2020-10-10T11:21:03Z

This was a lot of fun to play - one of those cases where the game offers an intriguing gimmick and then fully delivers on it. The music is really hype too, which adds a lot. And it's pretty mind-blowing that this is a compo rather than a jam game.

I guess maybe one thing is that you don't actually need to swing your hoop to push the bombs in the final battle (I was able to push them by just walking into them). I'm not sure if that would make it too hard, but it might be worth exploring to make it a proper test of your abilities.

Loop Frogs by GaryS 2020-10-19T01:38:42Z

Nice graphics and sound effects coming together to make a some very cute frogs

Stuck in a Hoop by Tunahead 2020-10-14T23:38:59Z

Nice game! And thanks for the linux export 😁 I've heard it can be fiddly on gamemaker (unless that's changed now) so it's appreciated. Although there seems to be a sprite scaling issue on my Manjaro KDE that makes the pixel art blurry. You may have forgotten to turn off interpolation on Linux, since it's a per-platform setting iirc. Otherwise the art is pretty crisp and pleasing on the eye, if maybe the background could be a little more interesting.

I like the boomerang-style attack mechanic, it's quite fun and satisfying. As others have said, a shorter hop would be helpful. Or alternatively, designing the levels around a fixed jump height would improve things as well.

The Dusty Work by Bugord 2020-10-09T18:20:40Z

This was fun! The graphics give off a very homely vibe. And the idea of a floor cleaning game is quite fun. It's very satisfying to get every inch of floor. All I'd say is that an in-game tutorial would benefit a lot, since I wound up skimming over the bit about pushing objects with drawers and ended up confused for a few minutes. 🙃 But I guess that's mostly my fault. Overall really good! Would love to see more levels added after ludum.

Where's my glasses? by landosilva 2020-10-07T23:31:05Z

A very relatable game with cute graphics. For me the game is unbeatable due to input lag - it's especially problematic in the bridge rooms. Which is a shame, because it seems like a really fun, well thought-out game otherwise.

Maybe exporting executable versions for PC, Mac and linux would help with the performance? My PC tends to struggle a bit with with Unity games in-browser but then desktop versions of games tend to run fine.

Looping Madness by Croped 2020-10-06T11:12:30Z

I do see the similarity you mentioned! Controls very nicely and the music's pretty groovy. Had me hooked for a while!

StarHamster 64 by Zashers 2020-10-06T10:01:54Z

Was not expecting to hear voice acting when I started. That was a really nice touch. Soundtrack is pretty banging too. I would say collisions are a bit unforgiving, and if you miss a ring it seems like you're out of luck since you're then stuck with that package.

ME! vs the unrelenting alien invasion by Human Writes Code 2020-10-06T12:16:55Z

A lot of fun to play and very polished. And it's funny to boot. Bob is priceless.

I encountered this amusing little bug where halfway through the tutorial all the letters started printing out twice, so everyone sounded like they were talking rreeaallllyy sslloowwllyy.

Cleano by TwistedHawk 2020-10-24T00:04:46Z

Definitely pretty fun and satisfying. Why is cleaning always so much more fun in video games? 🙃 Could be improved with some better physics. I found myself glitching through walls a lot. But maybe it's a lag thing?

Roundabout Rowdy by Andreas Roschal 2020-10-06T00:11:31Z

Very cathartic game. It doesn't take long to get the hang of the driving and then it's a lot of fun and hard to put down.

Blossoms & Steel by Hare Software 2020-10-06T17:49:09Z

Absolutely superb pixel art, and the unexpected poetry when you die in the tutorial is great for the mood. And I reckon the theme integration is actually pretty decent, if maybe quite subtle.

The menu music is very nice too, but it didn't seem to play the first time round - only after returning to the menu when I finished the game.

The swordplay is actually pretty decent once you realise that you can hold shift to block rather than timing it perfectly, so maybe this could be communicated better.

Infinity - 1 by Potato Imaginator 2020-10-19T12:58:31Z

This is a pretty fun mechanic - it really helps you to think differently about the puzzles you're doing even if in effect it's just a room where you can wrap from one side to the other. The puzzles are well designed too - stumped me a few times just long enough for me to feel rewarded for solving them!

The Time Terrorists by Wilko 2020-10-07T20:24:50Z

Very unique idea for gameplay and *man* the mood is good. The music and lighting and art all come together very nicely to immerse you in the scenario.

walk. by tutoa 2020-10-09T17:52:47Z

The art and audio create such a vivid atmosphere for this one. Like was said above, I struggled to figure out how to eat the mushrooms, jump over the log etc. but I guess being punished for not figuring that out adds to the mood as well.

FRUITFLY by frecklebars 2020-10-06T10:59:38Z

Very nice visuals and very mysterious - especially liked the sprite for that tall thing in the dark (I want to know what that is now!) If you want to polish it more post-LD I reckon an ambient noise like the hum of the space station could add a lot to the *loneliness of space* feel your going for.

Anything For You by Emily Pitcher 2020-10-06T11:52:58Z

Very touching little narrative, I like it! A well-earned 5 stars for mood. Voice acting the ending was a good move too - when you hear the narration after a full game of text-based dialogue it's pretty impactful. 🙂

L8ps by Delender1100 2020-10-06T21:12:43Z

Was genuinely confused at first thinking it was just one tiny level, until I realised every loop was different. It's a good thing you didn't explain that in the description because it was a fun surprise! (despite what you said about zero surprises haha)

Jumping mechanics are definitely an issue. It feels very unforgiving and unfair and I couldn't get past the second or third loop. If you touch those up a bit and instead introduce difficulty through the level design this would be a very good game, since the premise of the level changing as you go around the loop is already pulled off flawlessly.

Orbital Stand by Ashour 2020-10-10T10:54:50Z

Cool game with a very nice feel. A big part of that is due to some very satisfying sound effects I think. The idea of moving around by switching between two loops moving opposite directions fits pretty well, but there isn't much recourse to dodge enemy bullets if you're not in the jump window. I reckon more freedom in terms of when you can jump would help give the player more options.

But yeah other than some balance issues it's quite polished, I like it 🙂

Loop of Shapes by IronWood777 2020-10-06T22:49:16Z

This is a pretty fun and addicting game, and the music fits really well and motivates you to go on. The balance is *almost* just right. I think just slightly larger hitboxes on the shapes and it would feel a bit more fair. As it is now I feel like I'm losing a lot when - to my eyes - the hand was over the shape or hole.

Also making it a bit easier to retry would go a long way. When I lose I have to take my hand off the keyboard and click the play button with my mouse. Which isn't much effort, but when you're losing a lot being able to press space to start or something would make losing more fun.

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-06T10:05:03Z

Man, it's pretty humbling to come back to this and see all this positive feedback. Thanks guys! 😄

@frecklebars I'm glad someone appreciates my terrible humour lol

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-06T11:57:58Z

@Neragoth I did indeed have micro machines on my mind when I started drawing the huge pencils and cassettes and such! Thanks 🙂

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-07T20:02:46Z

@cambryx You're not the first person to find that bug! It's very strange and I'm trying to figure out how to reproduce it, since it seems to happen more or less randomly. Thanks for the feedback though 😁

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-07T23:42:29Z

Looks like I just figured it out. Seems to be if you collide with another car or something, they keep colliding with you and resetting the level restart timer.

This can be worked around, since by pressing ESC you get a pause menu where you can restart the level manually. I'll probably leave the fix for post-LD support, since it's kind of dubious whether this is something that was broken "while I was finishing up" (as per rules) and it's not game-breaking with the workaround.

tl;dr: **Press ESC and hit restart if you get the no-restart-on-death bug**

I'll update the description later as such.

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-09T00:49:54Z

@orlandobatista Thanks! 😁 Making this into a mobile game never crossed my mind tbh, but seeing as a couple people have mentioned it I might look into it. Could be an interesting way for me to learn how to put together touch controls!

As for more of this in general though, when I was designing the level select screen you can see I was gunning for about 50 levels, so definitely I'm hoping to expand on this game post-LD 🙂

CircleRC by SwiftVector 2020-10-23T23:38:22Z

@ded Thanks for the feedback! You're definitely right about the collisions, I had to hurriedly put together the enemy cars in the last few hours, so hopefully i can figure out how to polish that up later 😅

And high scores - absolutely! I'm not sure how yet since I haven't done something like that before but putting this on a site like gamejolt or newgrounds with high-score support could be a lot of fun.

Phase Distorter Disorder by this-is-beans 2020-10-05T23:55:59Z

Can second what Maytch said. There are a lot of errors, and when I drop items they seem to disappear. However, the graphics and audio are absolutely superb and it's a lot of fun to wander even if I'm not quite sure how to progress.

Aztec Ride by Idan Rooze 2020-10-19T13:08:17Z

What a well-realised game! This is really well-polished and the design direction is perfect. Would love to see this expanded with more modes post-LD

Cursed Temple by Neragoth 2020-10-06T10:51:57Z

The art and atmosphere on display here is probably the best I've seen in this jam. I agree with what others have said about the mechanics being pretty unforgiving - it can get a bit frustrating to record the same thing over and over again - but I think a quick remedy would be at least a hotkey that allows you to cut a recording short.

Cursed Temple by Neragoth 2020-10-06T11:56:54Z

@Neragoth hmm, maybe it's bugging out for me if this is what it's supposed to do but I was thinking it would be useful to have a button to play back the recording immedeately rather than re-record it? Nonetheless it's a useful feature to undo mistakes.
