Interesting take on the theme. I really like the visuals and the idea behind it. If I'm being honest though, it just wasn't super fun to find stuff. Maybe that's just me though, it was tricky to find/identify things further in the distance. Cool submission though, and it's awesome that you did it with your daughter!

dhim 2025-04-07 10:21

@cobear25 Thank you for playing my game! I had more fun making the blurry version look cool than really making the clean version really good... I adjusted the size of the ladybugs in the end, they were really impossible to find otherwise

manuel-cabrerizo 2025-04-07 12:40

love the graphics

foolishfool 2025-04-07 12:47

Nice take on the theme, a colorful spot in between all the dark worlds. :) In the game some feddback could be helpful, wich items i already clicked: i think i tried to click a ladybug twice cause i forgot i alredy found it. Also it would feel more rewarding to me. It seems to me that you did not use a 3d engine?! If so it is impressive to see you made a 3D Game without using a 3d engine.

ghettobastler 2025-04-07 14:20

Good take on the theme! It's an interesting twist on the search and find genre, and I really enjoy the visual style. I agree with @foolishfool regarding the feedback (maybe have the item disappear once found ?). Overall a very nice entry!

dhim 2025-04-07 16:06

@cobear25 Thank you I had fun trying to make a mix between realistic chocolate wrapper and a painterly look!

@foolishfool no 3d engine (You can check the code and star the repository if you like the idea on github :D) behind the scene it's just 4 images :

The clean and the blurred one are merged according to a depth map. Terrible performance since I generate the resulting image everytime the depth of field change...

@ghettobastler, @foolishfool Which element you click on is determined by a index image : Screen Shot 2025-04-07 at 17.58.47.png. I flood fill the index image with black when you click on an element. I could have use that to implement a glow by flooding white for ex. Or actually take a picture to add to the top of the screen (so much empty space in that tree line)

Thank you all for your kind comments!

foolishfool 2025-04-07 16:17

@dhim this is amazing. The depth.png reminds me of the "Magic eye" books from the 90s. Thank you for sharing these insights.

mgear 2025-04-07 17:13

this could easily be puzzle game in the appstores

tasakasama 2025-04-07 17:19

Very very cool, but really not easy to find the elements maybe the feeling of depth is not big enough, but I like the idea

dhim 2025-04-07 18:16

@foolishfool my entry for ld48 is a ImageMagick game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/deeper-trance

dhim 2025-04-07 18:18

@mgear thanks for the kind words!

@tasakasama, you are right, I wanted the game to be on the harder side. Maybe also increasing the gamma would help

absolute-garbage 2025-04-07 20:59

Super cool! And actually kind of hard haha. Definitely an unique interpretation on the theme. I remember playing your game from the last LD. Glad to play your game again, and hope to see you next time too!

javasaurus 2025-04-07 22:04

Waw this is awesome, your daughter can be proud! I've seen a couple of games that used "focal depth" as their core mechanic, but each and every one of them (including yours) just stands out. This belongs in a museum, as an interactive exposition. Lovely !

boboneoone 2025-04-07 23:38

Very clever use of the theme. unique idea that I haven't seen before as far as I remember. The performance was quite bad, but I am also on a ten year old laptop so that may have something to do with it. The objects in the distance were pretty hard to see as well even when focused, but again that may be my machine.

the3rdhunter 2025-04-07 23:42

Interesting technique and twist on the theme with depth of field. Very cool.

dhim 2025-04-08 11:30

@absolute-garbage Whao that's amazing that you remember my previous entry! Thank you for playing them !

@javasaurus Thank you for the kind words!

@boboneoone Yes performance are terrible, I was lazy and I am writing / updating the full image every "frame"... I should have added some optimization : - quantize the depth level to a hundred or so - Segment the image in rows (since the depth is mostly a vertical gradient) - Use mask instead of writing the pixels...

For the details in the distance, I am guessing that my fiddling with the size of the image to ajust to the screen size is bad. I should have made a full size canvas that you could pan around...

@the3rdhunter thank you for playing !

thomas-bringer 2025-04-08 21:58

Okay, so first piece of feedback is having the "Loading" text being so small at the bottom of the page, i was confused why the game wasn't there only to find it was loading (but i understand that website presentation is no one's focus in game jams!)

The game was lagging my browser a bit and it was hard to find the items. The art was very very cool, loved it a lot. The focus mechanic is interesting and a cool take on the theme. Great stuff!

Edit: i just recalled you're the person that made the game about lilypads last LD, great to see you back with such great artstyle again!

tori 2025-04-08 22:46

i love your take on the theme ! it's really well done, i kind dig the artistic choice too, it's really charming, love it, well done ♥

alex-davies 2025-04-09 01:04

Actually managed to find 6 ladybirds. Interesting idea for a game, but I feel the in-focus depth range for the depth of field could probably be a bit larger, or maybe you could have a more linear falloff to the depth blur (not too sure but I think even just fading between in-focus and out-of-focus linearly could look decent). Really neat take on the theme though!

jovialknoll 2025-04-09 01:04

I liked the music and it was certainly innovative but I'll admit that style of gameplay isn't my cup of tea, and the performance really killed it for me. (Cool technique, I wonder if the results could be pre-cached on load?)

dhim 2025-04-09 05:42

@thomas-bringer, I remember your game as well! You got 16th. I am using Quarto for the web page because I can then harmonize with the rest of my website. I'll probably do it after the Jam; I clearly did not have the time! I didn't even realize there was a loading behind the Canvas. I might increase its size if I can find what controls it. I don't really know why there is such a long loading time... maybe the preloading function is preventing the setup function. I should move some of the loading to the splash screen then...

@tori Thank you for the kind words!

@alex-davies, oh my ! yes there are 6! You are a great look-and-finder then! Thanks for playing !

@jovialknoll, thank you! The music is my favorite part of my entry... I don't know if I can cache the result that much, that would be very big arrays. Mip mapping, splitting the image or reducing the levels of depth would probably be faster

dnp 2025-04-09 10:30

These types of games are not my cup of tea, but very well executed. The blur effect is incredible. Much more difficult than a hidden item game usually is which is a plus for me. Although the small items in the back might be a bit too challenging to find.

oliver-day 2025-04-09 10:45

I found the hover-over a bit finicky but the overall mood was nice. Couldn't find 2.

dhim_game.png

dhim 2025-04-09 10:51

@dnp thank you for playing, I wanted a game my daughter could play! She found all of them in about 5 min . @oliver-day, thank you for playing. The poor performances don't really help with it not being finicky!

follusior 2025-04-09 12:46

That was nice, thanks:0

mcramon 2025-04-09 15:47

Visuals look interesting however i can't say they work best for this type of game. Your daughter must have an Eagle Eye if she managed to find everything as quickly as you say, or it's just me turning blind with age haha. I love the take on the theme, and music is nice, though a bit too loud.

dhim 2025-04-09 15:50

@mcramon she might have seen stuff during the design process though! Thank you for playing!

whateverdat 2025-04-09 17:04

That's a cool interpretation for the depth theme!

steven-garberg 2025-04-09 18:18

Very interesting concept! The blur is well executed. It was pretty hard to find some of the ladybugs!

jtap 2025-04-10 00:19

Interesting and original take on the jam theme, I liked the style of the images, although it is not easy to find the items. Thanks for this experience

pixelstain 2025-04-10 20:55

Screenshot 2025-04-10 154811.png Had fun with this game, but there does seem to be a bug with the image chunking. The depth of field is really cool and a very clever way to fit the theme. Great game!

ali-yagmur 2025-04-10 21:44

This was interesting really. Did found everything in 100 secs. Tought about how I would go about doing something similar. At least for me this is something original, never seen before. Good job.

xpoho 2025-04-11 13:41

Very nice game, but works really slow on my PC =\ I found around 3 bugs and 3 letters but can't find anything else.

Anyway, good game! I hope your daughter will be happy ^_^

deformhead 2025-04-11 21:37

Really good! The visuals and the execution are really good, and your take on the theme is a very good idea! What did your daughter thought about this game?

dhim 2025-04-11 22:02

@pixelstain What? The chunking is quite a hotfix, so people would not be too bothered by the performance issue, but if it introduces a new bug, that's not cool. I can't reproduce it, what browser were you using? Was it on load or on resizing the windows? In the code, I had to multiply the source chunk by two for it to properly display, but for the life of me, I cannot understand where that x2 stems from. Maybe its a pixel density thing and you have a different one from other players...

@ali-yagmur Great Time! I really wanted to implement a leaderboard in the game. In fact, I added one, and it works locally, but the online version seems to fail to make that HTTP request...

@xpoho sorry for the performance, the basic p5 way of handling pixel and image is not really efficient, I should have made a shader!

@deformhead thank you! She loved it, she wants more levels!

busisen 2025-04-12 08:08

thanks for adding me to the list on gh! love this take on the theme, and the artstyle fits really nicely. I would have probably removed/marked items that have been found already like someone else mentioned above, but it really a minor thing. solid submission, nice job!

captaindreamcast 2025-04-12 10:14

Found them all! The letters took a while, the second A and the B were super-well hidden!

I win.PNG

I had the same bug as pixelstain with the current version (both on Firefox 137.0.1 (64-bit) and Chrome 135.0.7049.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)). I'm just on some regular laptop with a 1080p display and not doing anything special, not sure where anything could be coming from, unfortunately. When I downloaded a previous release from github, that one worked for me. There was one slowdown when I spammed click but other than that it ran very smooth for me!

But yeah, back to the game: It's very cute, I think the easter theme linked with searching for objects is a very cute idea. Also very creative take on the theme, using depth of field based on the theme is genius, great job for coming up with that idea! Finding objects is fun, your daughter is correct, so it's a fun game. As I mentioned before, I thought the objects were hidden quite well. All-around great game, very well done!

dhim 2025-04-12 14:00

@captaindreamcast, @pixelstain, I am guessing that the issue is that I have a different pixel density that you have. It was troubling me while copying that my image where scale, so I had to include a strange x2. I have replaced the ```x2``` multiplication by ```x pixelDensity()``` in the chunk copying. Could one of you check if the issue is still there ?

@busisen I should have made a render with the elements hidden from the render, then when you discover one, edit the clean version, but that would leave the element in the blurred version (albeit not really visible...). I think I should have made an actual picture (kodak) of the element found in its context.

Thank you all for your comments

captaindreamcast 2025-04-12 14:06

@dhim Yeah, the github.io version works for me now, that seems to have fixed it.

pixelstain 2025-04-13 00:34

Screenshot 2025-04-12 192608.png @dhim Sorry for the late reply, the chunk scale issue seems to be fixed!

nyxkn 2025-04-13 10:58

Cute game idea! But way too hard! I couldn't find any of the letters except L and that one didn't seem to work. I assume they have to be found in order? Also couldn't find the rabbit. And tbh, I couldn't even find them in the clear picture you posted above!! Anyway the blur effect is really cool! Music got a bit annoying after a while. You had a mute button but I didn't use it in case it also removed the item found sound. Overall a nice and complete entry. Just way too hard :D

binaryspark 2025-04-13 12:49

I'm terrible at these kinds of games, but very neat concept, thanks for sharing!

muriel 2025-04-13 15:11

The art is very nice and unique, the game itself it is quite difficult but that's also because I am not used to this kind of games.

Great entry!

flying-dog-fish 2025-04-13 16:10

Easter came early this year! As a photographer I find this game very fascinating. Unfortunately I only managed to find 5 ladybugs and 2 bells. I couldn't find the on-eared rabbit, only a bunch of two-eared ones. I see the letter L but nothing happens when I click it. Sadly the music gets kind of annoying after a while.

eyedromeda 2025-04-13 18:40

Very interesting and novel concept with the depth of field effect. The graphics themselves were somewhat strange but interesting. Not sure why, but my CPU fan revved up every time I tabbed into the game... All in all, nice, unique take on the theme!

daandruff 2025-04-13 20:41

Found all in 164.32 seconds! Nice little game with a fun concept. My kids would love it!

yancharkin 2025-04-13 21:56

Not really my kind of game, but it’s technically impressive and cute. The fact that you made it for your daughter is extra cool!

zshandi-krahn 2025-04-14 06:14

I saw the same issue at first as @pixelstain, but only when trying to run it from LD embed, was fixed when I went to the website link, and I'm running Chrome. I also found it strange that the full screen just expanded the page as a whole, not the game within the page (was still rather small).

I also found an extra ladybug, but found the hanging bell impossible to find! I think it's the combination of being very dark to look like just a shadow and being in an unexpected location compared to everything else. Also I know you already said there are performance issues, but I was surprised that just clicking seemed to have a significant performance cost (if I clicked rapidly for a while, the blur movement would just freeze up for a bit.

Otherwise though, a really interesting game and nice take on the theme!

dhim 2025-04-14 14:00

@binaryspark thank you for playing @muriel thank you @flying-dog-fish, thank you for playing; the goal was for it to be difficult enough that my daughter would not spend 2min on something I work on for 24 hours. I have been listening to the music on a loop for half the dev! it haunts my nights! I wanted to compose a second song, but I could not match the energy of the first one. @eyedromeda poor performance due to updating the pixel of the image "every" frame. @daandruff thanks! Great TIme! Have you found the 6th ladybug? @yancharkin, thank you for playing! She was ecstatic with the game. @zshandi-krahn Congrats on the 6th ladybug! - bluebells: I had originally planned to have elements hidden on the screen, not only on the ground. However, it was well hidden on purpose, so you would not see it so clearly in the blurred version. - My full screening/resizing has indeed been an issue, I think I reversed a min/max somewhere the image tends to get bigger when you size the windows down... - Click should only affect performance when you click on an element first, as it floods the object in the index image.

scrawach 2025-04-15 13:34

The effect is really cool. I love it. Visually very beautiful. Good job! Looking for details was fun, but to be honest, at some point I needed hints :D

But in the end, I was able to finish it in ~400 seconds.

dhim 2025-04-15 16:31

Hints would have been a great idea @scrawach. Thank you for the comments!

grid96 2025-04-15 17:05

Very cool work with the depth map! The effect really fascinates me, also seeing your work behind it. My focus depth game works totally different xD

torte478 2025-04-16 18:09

This is cute! I’m impressed by the technical implementation. Great entry!

dhim 2025-04-16 18:18

@torte478 thanks!

oeuegha 2025-04-17 00:31

Interesting topic disclosure and technical implementation. Graphics's looks is amazing!

tobius 2025-04-20 01:12

Cool game! I really like the art style; it reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle. I also like your use of depth as the main mechanic for "hiding" stuff, very on theme.

One thing that would improve this game for me is some way of showing which items you've already found in the scene. I liked the tracker at the top, but within the scene itself it would've been nice to have the item either removed, outlined, or otherwise colored differently.

Another idea that would "punch up" this submission but is a probably more work is making the scene animated. Adding small animations to the scene would really add another level of intrigue to the game, and further distinguish this from a typical "eye-spy" type game.

yopox 2025-04-21 14:36

Really cool entry! I didn't expect to see a search and find game that is also impressive technically

I like that you shared technical details and also the source code!

It would be nice to have a magnifying glass mechanism because some elements are a bit small :mag:

local-minimum 2025-04-21 18:42

Awesome graphics and fun little game! But why am I so bad at it? It took me forever to even discover the first letter. I did find 6 ladybugs though. First I played in firefox, but something about the click detection became off and when I spotted the first A no matter how much at or around it I clicked, the game never counted it.

In chrome it worked nicely though. But I never found the last or first A. You are really good at hiding stuff!

Very good entry!

shadyshade 2025-04-24 13:39

Pretty cute, funny and uncommon game! Excellent job! :thumbsup_tone1:

alvaron 2025-04-24 17:51

Enjoyed playing your game on stream! Also love the backstory. Enjoy making games for and with your daughter!! <3
