Phenomenal game, I am pro speedrunner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpZOlxwvEnw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD9_8wLUPVA

jackypark9852 2023-01-10 04:45

Amazing work! The controls feel very responsive, the procedural animations are very fun, and the music really helps build lil' spideys character. Some of chained moving platforms, like the one with 3/4 moving platforms in a row were very challenging, and it was frustrating to not have a respawn checkpoint on the islands between the platforms. Overall, really great work!

On a side note, I want learn to make games that feel like this one. Would you guys ever share the source code? Thanks!

redoplus 2023-01-10 04:56

Incredible game! I absolutely love how you designed and animated the spider... the legs are a great fit for the inverse kinematics. I'm happy to see any games about bugs in general when most people will exaggerate how frightening they can be, I think. The game feels really smooth for a platformer, too. I ran into some manner of glitch when playing on more than one occasion where the spider's legs would lock up and I would be unable to move with WASD unless I jumped into the air (seemed to have something to do with swinging?), but I was enamored enough with the game that I was willing to restart the couple of times I needed to to complete the game. It looks great and is just an all-around solid entry for a game developed in just three days. Really nice work!

grisha 2023-01-10 05:07

Why is it called the harvest of 2005? Great spider animations btw!

dramonsa 2023-01-10 05:46

That's awesome, i d'ont expect such good game in this game jam, good job, i really love the way this spider swing and the animation, good job !

pazzi 2023-01-10 06:49

The web mechanic was a really good idea- Very cozy, very adorable! Lovely game!

kromeboy 2023-01-10 08:00

Great game, but I have got some issues with the camera control. Probably is the web version

rohanmoon 2023-01-10 11:53

Wow this is seriously amazing, I love the art style. The spider was super cute and I loved how its legs animated. The gameplay felt a lot like mario64. Lovely soundtrack and sound effects too. Really quite a good entry, nice job!

jormarysky 2023-01-10 16:52

Oh whoa, this is definitely my favourite entry so far. From graphics to atmosphere (even checkpoints are webs), to controls to level design (branching paths which all teach you more mechanics. I did not even notice there are so many paths available at start, before I learned about web jumps) it all just works.

Few suggestions, could do bit more varied combat and I don't think tied enemy should do damage. I also think you should disable mipmapping to get rid of that blurry pixel garbage few meters away from camera.

picross 2023-01-10 18:22

@jackypark9852 Thank you for all the praise, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Maybe we should have signposted that path better to show that it was optional. As for the source code, it's public over on its [Github repo](https://github.com/picrossin/BarvestLudumDare52)! Also feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the code. It's a little sloppy because of the time restriction :)

picross 2023-01-10 18:25

@redoplus Thank you for playing!! We have a tendency to make games about little bugs LOL

I think I know the bug you're talking about, I've been looking into that... truly bizarre. Thanks for stickin thru it anyway :D

picross 2023-01-10 18:26

@grisha It's a great year to have a bug harvest ;) Thanks 4 playing, glad you liked the anims!

picross 2023-01-10 18:28

@kromeboy Hmmm yeah I've had a few reports of that bug, still looking into it... I can't seem to repro it for some reason at the moment. Thanks for sticking through it and playing anyway!

picross 2023-01-10 18:29

@rohanmoon I'm so happy you thought it felt like Mario 64!! It was definitely a big inspiration. Thanks for playing and the nice words!

picross 2023-01-10 18:33

@jormarysky Quite the compliment, thank you!! Definitely wanted to vary the combat but ran out of time. Maybe I could add some Spiderman 2 PS2 inspired stuff... And agreed I'm working on the weird mipping effect, didn't catch it in time for submission. Thanks so much for the feedback :D

lerg 2023-01-10 20:59

Very cool game! I enjoyed the graphics and the gameplay. Cool retro aesthetic.

sn4pi 2023-01-10 21:55

I enjoyed this game! With 100% completion I saw everything of it - slick movement, chill music and very creative level design (especially for a Ludum Dare submission!).

I think that if the enemies could fight back, the gameplay and potential would rise to another level.

tricky-fat-cat 2023-01-10 23:20

A really good submission. To be honest, it can easily become a full game.

recursiveanomaly 2023-01-10 23:31

Great game. I love the style, and the swinging mechanic was a lot of fun. Very impressive to do a full 3d platformer.

zeinlikezane 2023-01-11 00:38

The animations and movement were surprisingly polished, very nicely done. I do not usually like spiders but you did a good job making the goober cute. Nice and effective presentation overall. If I had any complaints, I had no idea what collecting all the coins did, if they do anything; and kind of expected the final "bug" to do something.

picross 2023-01-11 01:35

@zeinlikezane thank you! Some of my teammates have arachnophobia so we tried to make it cute :D And yes I 100% agree, I would have added something special if I had time... for now it's bragging rights!

picross 2023-01-11 01:56

@sn4pi I'm glad you liked it! Nice job 100%ing it!

catfort 2023-01-11 02:53

the cute spider is just more spider rehabilitation propaganda - and I've immediately fallen for it! the movement is a little tough to master, but feels very satisfying to get right, and the game is forgiving, but still challenging :) the music and graphics bring it together into a very enjoyable experience. great work!

bluedingo 2023-01-11 03:00

This is a really fun game, reminds me heavily of A Hat In Time from its controls and feel. Only suggestion would to move the shadow directly under the player rather than from the actual lighting because I wasn't really able to make precise jumps without having to turn the camera directly above the spider when jumping.

ironhandmd 2023-01-11 03:03

awesome game! the art and music is great , the controls are tight and responsive, the game itself guides the player on what to do, I like the vast area to explore, climbing and jumping and avoiding obstacles though basic, is fun and challenging, it has a balanced gameplay with save points so as not to give the player a hard time. Overall I enjoyed playing! Congratulations! keep it up!

floata3 2023-01-11 03:08

awesome entry loved the music loved the art and the feel of the game was very smooth

la-bread 2023-01-11 03:22

I FREAKING LOVE THIS, as a fan of old 3d platformers like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, I loved wandering around and collecting everything 100%. I can 100% imagine this as a full steam game with levels, extra moves, collectables, boss fights, music etc. AAAUGH ITS SO COOOL

chompdev 2023-01-11 04:00

This was an excellent experience from start to finish! Great N64 vibes, intuitive controls, fun graphics, and lots of small details and extra polish make it shine. I love the little things like flags made of spiderwebs, the spider's arms above them as they fall, and the spider eyes on the coin. It's all just very well designed and amazing for such a short project!

secrt101 2023-01-11 04:35

Super cool mechanic to capture the bugs. I'm not great at platformers, but I loved the concept!

mcbombadev 2023-01-11 06:10

This was pretty ambitious for a jam game, and you guys pulled it off wonderfully! The interconnected level design worked really well, and made it easy to look for coins. Catching enemies with the web was a creative mechanic that could definitely be expanded on in a larger project.

I see I'm not the only one who stumbled upon a certain strategy for traversing!

spider.gif

xlores-liang 2023-01-11 06:39

Incredible game! I kept trying tarzan jumps on the trampolines to reach higher, and failed 😂

plexsoup 2023-01-11 07:07

Impressive game for a short jam!

joefazz 2023-01-11 09:17

This is so charming and the aesthetic is so pleasant to look at even though the platforming could be challenging I felt very serene while playing. Loved it <3

qqruzkin 2023-01-11 10:28

There are surprisingly few 3D platformers on this jam and this game really pleased me. Nice style, cool walking spider animation, I had fun!

picross 2023-01-11 17:19

@catfort I'm actually a spider and this is a psyop. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing! :spider: :spider_web:

picross 2023-01-11 17:26

@bluedingo Great idea. I thought about doing this at one point but forgot. We did it for the coins though LOL. Thanks for the kind words, A Hat in Time was a big inspiration for us!

@ironhandmd Thank you for playing, I'm glad you appreciated it!

@la-bread Wow, what a compliment! We're considering expanding it, but we'll wait for our review scores heheheh

@chompdev Glad you appreciated all the details :D Our artists are fantastic

@mcbombadev LOL we found that strat while playtesting and deliberately left it in... it was just too fun! Glad you enjoyed it

@qqruzkin I noticed that too! Glad we could fill a niche :D Thanks for the kind words

zungryware 2023-01-11 19:10

Has the Nintendo DS nostalgia wave officially begun? I ask because this game really reminds me of the look of Mario 64 DS. Well I couldn't be happier. This game has a lot of charm! That spider looks so graceful with his scuttle and procedural limb movement.

Controls felt very responsive! The swinging mechanics felt pretty good as well. I had a bit of trouble near the end when I had to chain multiple swings together with double jumps while avoiding floating spike walls. But it was fun getting better at the mechanics. And while I was not up to the challenge, I like how you intentionally left in the ridiculous traversal mechanics that I saw in other people's comments. That sort of stuff is always cool if you're the kind of person that can pull it off. One thing I would suggest is putting a shadow directly beneath the player, so you can tell when he's over a platform.

Fantastic game! I will always remember the grace of that spider as he floats through the air while calm classical guitar music plays in the background.

picross 2023-01-11 20:40

@zungryware Hahaha that's a great comparison! I love M64 DS. Really glad you enjoyed it :D Thanks for playing!

alec-cunningham 2023-01-12 07:07

Controls feel great, and the art style is fantastic, very impressive! I liked it a lot!

bartalomew 2023-01-12 09:13

very impressive game! plays great, looks great, hell even the music is super nice! also double jump and spidermaning is super satisfying. very well made, great job!

reikan 2023-01-12 12:08

I like how the spider moves. I am really really bad at plateform games but I really enjoyed this one. Noice !

yogurtthehorse 2023-01-12 22:10

Wow. So good art-style. And those legs animations so smoooth. I really liked it :D

cloughd 2023-01-12 22:58

Terrible at platformers but this one was a lot of fun! Nailed that old school vibe. Honestly nothing else I could comment on, well done.

sean-tang 2023-01-13 04:56

Really fun to play ! love the style and vibes of the game

koboldskeep 2023-01-13 05:44

A drop shadow to indicate where I'm going to land would be helpful. The camera lock when webbing felt disorienting. Touching a bug after webbing it feels like it should eat it instead of taking damage.

vague-versatile 2023-01-13 10:20

Very chill and fun vibes, I enjoyed a lot. Reminded me of Nintendo 64 platformer.

The only things I found as to be improved is how you are supposed to eat a bug. I always die instead of eating it even when captured.

Also, while sound design is chill but I would have enjoyed something more in line with the "cave" theme. Here it reminded me more of green hills type of vibe.

Great game overall, congrats

cnaits 2023-01-13 10:46

The spider is very cute, the music is great and the webbing is fun. In short, I loved this game until before the end which was very frustrating to me. It is difficult to see without shadows where I will land and the platforms at the end were just so small. Then, during the webswing I carefully aligned so often, just for the spider to jump sideways, miles off target. To me it felt also unnatural to have such a big acceleration downwards when you release the grapple point just a little bit too late. The game has a lot of potential and is amazing for the short time of developing. The details always take the most work and I hope you work on them further with more time. Nonetheless, this game is a favourite of mine so far!

Edit: Some of the quirks might be amplified by/because of the web version I would assume.

dizzy 2023-01-13 14:06

I really really enjoy those old style 3d graphics, what an amazing job :)

therealjtgill 2023-01-13 16:08

This game is incredible. Simply marvelous. This was the first game I played where I felt a strong sense of empathy for the character.

Things I liked

1. Retro style graphics - very cool, definitely enhanced the feel of the game 2. Music - the background music was excellent, it had a playful feel that paired well with the visual style of the game 3. Audio - the sound effects were just *chef's kiss*. The *chomp* when a bug gets eaten is my favorite, next to the jump sound 4. Animations - inverse kinematics on a spider? Insanity! 5. Game play - the mechanics were all very well synced with the game's theme. The jumping spider jumps very high, shoots a web, and swings from swing points! Not to mention that this is a huge number of mechanics to fit into a game jam game, they all felt pretty polished and complete.

Things I noticed

1. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but sometimes I'd start wrapping up a bug and I'd get teleported back to the last flag I captured? 2. I couldn't climb up some of the inclines on the platforms, so I had to jump over them, which was a little weird 3. The spider has a hard time climbing up walls ;)

I would certainly pay for this game. Thank you for sharing!

picross 2023-01-13 17:09

@koboldskeep Fair criticisms! We definitely intended to add a drop shadow but I didn't get it in time for the jam. It will definitely be in the post jam version! I agree that the whole webbing sequence needs a touch of work. Maybe we could allow the player to move the camera vertically during the webbing, and then lerp the camera to the correct position when your start the webbing instead of snapping it.

Thanks for playing, and for the feedback! Hope you enjoyed despite its quirks :D

picross 2023-01-13 17:10

@vague-versatile Ah yeah we should have made the spider eat it once it was captured if you touched it. We just really wanted to show off that "reeling in" animation lol

Thanks for all the compliments and feedback!

picross 2023-01-13 17:13

@cnaits Thank you for playing! We definitely intend on adding a small shadow beneath the player, just didn't get it in time for the jam. Also I think I know what you're talking about with the "sideways grapple jump" thing, and I think it's a bug... it has happened to me occasionally to but I have no freakin clue how to reproduce it reliably. I'll look into it more.

Thanks for sticking with the game besides its downfalls! :D

picross 2023-01-13 17:20

@therealjtgill Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! Means a lot to the team :)

The webbing sequence is definitely a little quirky and we could probably workshop it a bit more to be less confusing. We'll probably adjust the camera too.

As for the inclines, yeah... I added a cutoff for them where you would lose your control on them instead of applying more friction, but I should have raised the angle of cutoff for some of them. Or we should have not had those slopes in the first place lol

As for the walls... we did think about that! Decided that it would change the game too much. I feel like a game where you could climb on literally every surface would be really cool though... maybe another jam!

We appreciate all the kind words! Thanks for playing

brainles-etertainment 2023-01-13 17:44

Controls are nice and intuitive. The game looks cute and easy to play. Runs smoothly in Firefox. I bet you spent many hours for meticulous job on graphics and animations. They are really cool.

The only this that wasn't joyful for me is the camera zoom. She is too close to the spider and it is hard to see thins around me. It would be neat to have customizable distance.

infecsean 2023-01-13 18:39

The spider character is just so darn cute and it's hard not to love it. The graphic style is also really cool, with a unique and eye-catching aesthetic. One of the best things about the game is the double jump mechanic, which adds a fun and exciting element to the gameplay. The bug-eating mechanics are also really innovative, adding a unique twist to the gameplay. However, it can be a bit hard to learn at first and may take some time to master.

boxedmeatrevolution 2023-01-13 18:47

Wow! Very impressive entry that had me hooked until I'd beaten it and gotten all the coins. In general movement felt very responsive and natural, and the spider's dynamically animated legs were great. My only complaint is that the web swinging mechanic felt a bit off. Instead of following the spider's natural arc you'd get a kick of momentum when releasing the web which felt unnatural to me. But other than that, I enjoyed the level design, the exploration, the calming music, and eating tasty bug snacks with my little spider friend.

seagoingmanatee 2023-01-14 00:11

Man what a fun game. The swinging was incredibly fun. The music was super chill and webbing up bugs was so enjoyable. Very impressed by the scope and how fun it is. This reminded me of playing a super mario 64 level and I loved climbing up to a high spot and being able to look out at the rest of the level and seeing where I haven't been yet. This could easily be a prototype to a mario 64 style full game.

pyspher9 2023-01-14 04:04

This was a really chill and enjoyable play. I really wished I could climb on the walls, but I can understand why that wasn't a part of the gameplay. I loved the mechanic for swinging from platform to platform and the capturing of the bugs reminded me of Star Wars Rouge Squadron when you wrap an AT-AT, so that was fun.

I really wanted to finish this, and made it quite a ways, but having the bugs you're catching "hurt" you so that you start over from the last checkpoint, while challenging, became a little frustrating farther into the game.

All in all though, this was still fun! Playing an actual spider was really cool and you all did a good job on the leg animations, as well as the physics of how all the parts of the spider moved when flying or falling.

jj-cruikshanks 2023-01-14 04:56

Awesome game! Movement was super responsive and the swinging was great! I found that if you attach yourself to one of the swinging orbs and reset to your last position you stay attached to the orb so you get sent flying back to the orb haha. Sick game definitely one of my favourites!!

luhuchiha 2023-01-14 11:58

The spider animation movement was great! Very fun game, with n64 vibes :)

gotchman01 2023-01-14 12:31

Very nice game! Spider is so cute.

amarokczukay 2023-01-14 13:08

incredible work!! apart from the great graphics, i found it very responsive and fluid, the level is really well designed. the swing is excellent, and everything is just so pleasing about this game i don't even know what to say!

Great work!!!

yorsh 2023-01-14 17:13

Looks amazing ! Controls are great and it feels good to play. It's classic Platforming 3D but very well made, especially for a jam.

hitchh1k3r 2023-01-14 21:24

This game was amazing! The spider model looks great and is very well animated, it has a lot of life to it and it's a cute spider, which is no easy feat. It was really cool to learn the controls and become a better spider, more able to traverse the world. The game was very well done and felt good to play. Some of the wall textures were a bit odd, but they didn't look bad. The music was nice, but I felt it didn't fit quite as well with the gameplay, but I can't quite put my finger on why. The sound effects were well done. The level design was good, but the cameras field of view and the fog made it a bit hard to tell where I was going. I would think a spider would have a larger than normal field of view with all its eyes, right? Overall, great job on this game and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

Bugs.png

itzemii 2023-01-14 22:33

Thats a big game for a game jam!!! Really cool! I love the animation of the spider, I love the spider. I cannot see the "harvest" theme. I had several times glitches: after falling down (cool animation) and reappearing, the spider automatically ran and I could not do anything. One time the game froze and my browser crashed. But overall cool game!!!

elastiskalinjen 2023-01-15 17:11

So cool to see 3D platformers in game jams! Would not have the courage! Love the game feel!

picross 2023-01-15 21:04

@brainles-etertainment I'm glad it was working in Firefox for you, because it wasn't for me! Lol I appreciate the kind words and suggestions! I agree, some more camera controls would be wise.

@infecsean Thanks for playing! Definitely, we could probably tutorialize the "webbing" mechanic more

@boxedmeatrevolution Thanks for the compliments and feedback! That's interesting, we added the little kick at the end of grapples to try to be helpful, but maybe it just makes it more confusing... I'll do some playtesting!

@seagoingmanatee Really appreciate all the kind words, thanks for playing!

@pyspher9 Yeah the "webbing" sequence could definitely use a little work, even I get frustrated by it sometimes... Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it

@jj-cruikshanks LOL I didn't know about that one, that's amazing.... potential new speedrun strat? :eyes:

@amarokczukay thank you so much for playing!!

@hitchh1k3r Hahaha good point with the FOV, spiders should definitely be able to see more! Better camera controls should be in a post-jam update

@itzemii Thank you for playing! Those are some strange bugs, and I'm not talking about creepy crawly ones... What browser were you playing in?

itzemii 2023-01-16 12:03

I was playing on Chrome on Mac OS.

strega 2023-01-17 05:13

This was so charming and fun! I loved the way the spider moved and the web swinging worked really well! The procedural animations worked perfect! I thought the way you caught the bugs was really innovative. I'm so glad you put check points throughout the environment and the game was fairly forgiving. The level design was fun, the grappling/swinging segments were clever. The art was super charming and the audio and music fit really well. It was fun kind of having a final boss fight and none of the coins were so obscure to detract from the game. Amazing job!

rosypenguin 2023-01-17 06:18

Absoltutely phenomenal game, loved every element from the retro style bug models to the clever level designs. The soundtrack was great too! Definitely deserves a top spot! It even innovated on the platforming genre with the unique web capturing mechanic. My only complaint is that I encountered a bug (heh) near the end of the game where it crashed and froze T_T

bugbug.png

picross 2023-01-17 18:07

@strega Glad you liked it, thanks for all the kind words! I'm glad none of the coins seemed too obscure, we tried hard to make them all intuitive to find :D

@rosypenguin Thank you so much! Oh wow that's a new one, I'll look into it... very strange. Thanks for the report!

la-bread 2023-01-20 03:06

chrome_3BsKbU5Q4w.png

Speedran it and got this time!

picross 2023-01-20 04:11

@la-bread Yoooooo nicely done :sunglasses:

jonathan-lorenz 2023-01-21 19:30

You managed to make the simplest action (moving through the world) enjoyable because of the cute spider animation and the nice hook mechanic. This is a great example of a cool game jam game. Simple but polished in every aspects. Great job!

la-bread 2023-01-29 01:49

barvest wr.png update, new speedrun PB record, I DID make a mistake or two so the record could be lowered easily
