I'm not sure if it's my prob or anyone else is also experiencing it when trying to open, it says [error]"the following components are required to run this program: [DirectX runtime], and would not let me actually open the game to play.
is it because i don't have this particular stuff download to open? that's so sad, i really liked the graphic though.
The graphics are so cute and the overall style is very cohesive. I really appreciate that you guys made those levels in such a short time. And I like the idea of combining the tutorial level with the start page. A nice game to playwith.
Really dig the Paper Mario vibes here. The hiccup jump is a fun twist on your usual double jump mechanic, though by the end it really did get annoying (hey, just like real life!). The good news is that it didn't overstay it's welcome and the game felt very well paced and not overly drawn out. The art is really well made (though there seemed to be a place towards the end with some slightly weird shadows) and I appreciate the cutout shader when you go behind the wall.
Overall very well done.

The level of polish in 72 hours is unreal, the audio/visual style is impressive! I came to really appreciate the dynamic music, as timing the hiccups was easier to listen for, for me. You hit it for the theme with the hiccup mechanic, it's very cute and fun, probably my favorite take so far. Absolutely rad!

I'm a fan of the art style, super cute omg! Very neat and well-polished work!!Is it burping once every ten seconds?
Really great, nailed the art style and feel.
I really like the art style and sounds the character makes. I did have a lot of trouble figuring out the puzzles. It always felt like I had to cheese them or I just had to happen to get lucky with the timing. I ended up getting stumped by the puzzle with the two lizards and the pillar that goes up. No idea if its just about timing your hiccups to line up with theirs?
Art is stellar, the flat 2.5D flare looks so good. A few times I got stuck in a death loop where a wasp would kill me before the checkpoint loaded and I could move, I could work around it for pausing it for a bit. I got stuck on the part with a bunch of wasps, but I'll be giving it another try tomorrow after some sleep.
@akai-syuuichi - thanks so much for letting us know! We updated the build now so it packages with the Unreal pre-requisites (basically, if you've not run an Unreal Engine game on your PC before, it will now install the required components for you). If you find the time to give it a go, we'd love to hear how you enjoyed it!
@karen-shum thank you! I always say I want a title screen where you can trial the controls, but every other jam I run out of time and just throw up a static image for the title screen instead! Glad you liked it.
@guitarbro we were really worried the 10 second would be too long. We had most puzzles initially require a hiccup, to jump further or throw your item further - but in the end we simplified each puzzle to make it not essential since waiting around 10 seconds if you mess up can feel terrible. Hiccups ended up being a way to speed through bits, which worked as a nice compromise. Thanks for the feedback!
@mavvy Brainoid did great with the music, feels very cohesive from level to level! He also made it so you hiccup on the beat to try help with the timing, which was about as much as we could manage in the time! spacey makes lovely assets too, so its a pleasure trying to make them look good in editor!
@inksun thanks a lot! we often get carried by the art haha! It is every 10 seconds you hiccup - you can delay it by drinking water for certain puzzles though.
@creepyounguy cheers, means a lot!
@pianoman373 great to hear about the sounds! what's funny is most sounds I had to double the pitch of, but the hiccups spacey recorded were high pitched enough so left them as they were!! Yeah there are some tricky puzzles in there (SPOILERS INCOMING: you are right about timing your hiccup, you need to reset your hiccup with the pool of water so that your hiccup happens between the two others - like on the first 3 hiccupers you walked past).
@thebooksnail thanks for the feedback! yeah, we really hoped to get some play testing from people before we submitted, but time didn't allow. It may run a bit different on various PCs, which could impact the load times and cause situations like you described :( Let us know if you give it a second go.. you can defeat those pesky wasps! (SPOILER: Remember, they don't like fans and they also lose interest quite easily if you're quick).
Loved the art style! Gameplay was fun especially when you master the timing on a hiccup megajump!

This game adorbs. I like the sounds and the paper mario style.
The timing the hiccup puzzle to raise the platform took me a little while to figure out.

Awesome entry guys, I really enjoyed the look and feel and the puzzles were great. I only wish you could control the character with arrows too so I could easily walk right AND interact with 'e' more easily. I don't know, maybe I played too many emulators back in the day and that's why I'm used to using arrows.
@lex tbh it takes us 30 seconds to add alternative controls, we will make an effort to get that in future jam entries! Thanks for the feedback.
@chybby yeah the final puzzle was crammed by brainoid in the final hour or so, so its a little janky and not exactly the most obvious - but glad you still got it!
@merijn-schaap glad you mastered the hicjump! We wanted to make more puzzles reliant on it, but decided to have it work more as a "optional short cut" sorta mechanism, so people didn't get stuck!
Hic! Stop stealing my gear, rock. I like that I can horde items and try to bring them to the end with me, like a "hard mode." I wish that when I was standing on a rock on water that I didn't move at water speed, since I'm no longer in the water.
The art and sound is so cute. I wish you had an HTML5 version of your game so it's easier for us to ask friends to play your game!
@sean-esopenko thanks for the message! Ah yes, I think we overlooked the rock type updating your last stood on material type - sorry about that! Did you manage to get the turtle to the shaman? :D
We too look forward to when Unreal Engine web builds are a reliable and accessible thing!
I am absolutely blown away! Fantastic job!
This is very fun, great take on the concept and execution is pretty flawless. Well done :)
This was really fun. Fantastic art as always :) The hiccups were equally annoying and useful, but it was a great mechanic trying to manage it with the water. I also really like the little hoarder guys and trying to outwit them :D Great work to you all!
The art style is so good and I am in love with Beardadette. The last puzzle is pretty precise, even with the right timing it was a close one, but the whole double jump hiccup thing is super creative and it'd be super fun to play a lot more puzzles with this dynamic. Also I wanted to take the turtle to the end but it's now in the depths of that fall, sorry friend.

@payaosito Thanks for the nice words <3. The last puzzle is actually not a hiccup jump puzzle :) But it's totally doable like that too! :D well, it is slightly harder. So the puzzle there is you need to drink water between the hiccups of other lizards so when you hiccup between them, your hiccup also raises the platform and you go high enough, you can make the jump. I implemented this puzzle in the final hour so it's not perfect sorry :D Thanks for playing the game!

Nice game. Very cute, and i really loved sounds. Very fun as well!
:) This was very cute, and a lot of fun! Very clever use of the 10-seconds theme. I really liked all the puzzle mechanics, though they often seemed a little finicky to get through. Great concept, great story, great art, great music and sounds. I love this one!

Reaaaaally cute game, and the name and art are so funny ! It was a little hard at first to sync with the hiccup but it was quite a clever mechanic ! well done

Thanks for sending it to me on stream! This game is incredible! Its amazing you got this done in only 3 days. The art and sound effects are extremely polished and adorable and I really enjoyed all the characters (even the little rock jerk who kept stealing my gears!!). Very fun and interesting puzzle design and the mechanic of hiccuping every 10 seconds was both super cute and very unique, it was also used really well in the puzzle design!
Great work!!

Fun game. Nice graphics and art style. Interesting mechanics. Good story. Hiccups are annoying, but I understand it is part of the game mechanics. It took me some time to figure out the place with the gear, and I ended up using the stone. I guess it was just overscoped mechanics which did not make it to the game. But overall the game looks very polished.
Some minor bug: sometimes items or characters got rotated 90 degrees on the Z-axis, so they looked like vertical lines.

I love everything about your game. EVERYTHING. From the look on Bernadette's face when she drinks to the little thieving rocks!! The music is perfect for the game and I love the puzzling and platforming that happened!! The only drawback is... it did sometimes makes me feel that *I* was about to hiccup. LOL!
I quite enjoyed this take on the theme! Great job team!
Cute game, love the art and the audio, fits great. I love the hickup idea, its the perfect fit for the theme and u build a really cool game around that idea! Loved it!

This is really something quite unique. I love the art style. The parallax backgrounds, mixed with 3D levels and 2D characters is really well done. The puzzles are great, not too easy, not too hard. And I love the interpretation of the theme *hick*.

This game was absolutely adorable, I loved the hiccups and the art style was really polished!
Fantastic entry!
The art style and character design are excellent. Beardadette is a beautiful and graceful protagonist, and all of the miscellaneous creatures have tons of character. I loved the little angry rocks and the sick lizards (reminded me a little of [Grubbs](https://oddworld.fandom.com/wiki/Grubb)). The art style of 2.5D worked great with the gameplay and mood, but you still put lots of extra graphics flair in like the section where you walk through walls, the 3D liquids, and the points where you move closer/farther from the camera.
The gameplay itself is solid. I liked the visual indicator for the upcoming hiccup, but I think it could have been even more precise (like an animation or meter refilling) to take out some of the guesswork.
I will say that the fun part of the game was the puzzles and the hiccup mechanic, but sometimes I felt like I was fighting with the physics of the game a little bit. Things like trying to throw a rock onto a ledge and having it roll back off. The windmills were also a little bit finnicky --- at one point one knocked out my rock, stranding me on the wrong side. It might be an improvement to make some of the objects less slippery and more likely to stay put, but this is a pretty minor thing. But for the purposes of a game jam it's still way above standard haha.
The music and audio were great, especially the hiccup noises. Would have been nice to have sound effects for some of the extra things like the knife-wielding bees!
I drew Beardadette and added her to the fan art collage on [my profile.](https://ldjam.com/users/jeremy-ryan/)

Great job and look forward to continuing to play your team's games in future events.

Definitely a very interesting take on the theme and not one I was at all expecting to see pop up. But it's got an interesting implementation in the game and the storyline. As well as a mix between the two with some of the puzzles which is nice. Though, a bit vague at times, which to be fair makes some sense for puzzles.
As for the test though there were some definitely interesting uses of the limited mechanics. The picking up, putting down and hiccupping. Though, a little limited on the hiccupping I guess I'd say, at least till the end. Which to be fair lets you get used to other mechanics first which is nice.
The different enemies were also interesting and it does seem like there's some different strategies to deal with them which would be cool to look back at, which I may have to do. Maybe try and *not* murder all the, I think they're called hoarders? Though I dunno it was pretty fun to murder them.
Overall though a really fun setup and a interesting game to play through. Definitely a nice set of mechanics setup for sure.
Cool little platformer! Fell in love with my little hiccupy guy! Thank you for submitting to my stream! Coolio. :smirk:
Graphic is amazing, gameplay is solid. Love the hiccup animation so mcuh in particular :) Very good atmosphere, well made!

great animated beardadette, was good to update a "take" animation because its a little glitchy
Really dig the art style and music! I do wish the game feel was a bit better though, as the physics felt a bit wonky at times (understandable, since game jam and all). One immediate suggestion: I would consider adding more of the players momentum to released objects when they're running, to allow them to "throw" objects more effectively. It felt a bit tricky lodging rocks under windmills consistently, or throwing the gear under the windmill to get the rock guy to KO himself, but I feel like just a bit of a physics adjustment would help a lot! Cool game overall though, and my whole team loves the main character design :D

Absolutely awesome game!! I loved the artwork and the creativity of the whole thing! Out of all the ideas I've seen for something happening every 10 seconds, I have to say hiccupping every 10 seconds is the most original thing yet. And the fact that you worked it in as a game mechanic is amazing. Really loved the whole aesthetic and had a great time playing this. Great job!
@nick-shooter thanks for the feedback! So I actually decided to keep the momentum it inherits low when releasing an object, as we wanted "larger throws" to be something you could utilise the hiccup for. You'll notice you throw things much further when hiccuping. We didn't want to have to force people to use the hiccup mechanic, but yeah it did make things easier if you utilised it. However, we still could have added a bit more momentum to make the windmill bit a bit more tricky. As for the cog bit - glad to hear you figured out that new way of doing it! The intended way was to stop fan with rock, run cog into the lift, then run back and remove the stone - then the hoarder would get killed by fan when running back to his home with the cog! I can def see how it would have felt a bit tiresome doing it otherwise!
@jag thanks very much, spacey makes lovely 2d art and we are glad you liked it!
@fedir we did have a carry animation, but ran out of time to implement it sadly :( Was spacey's first time doing 2d animation for our games, she did good!
@daivyishere thanks for the kind words <3
@yellowkamel thanks for playing on stream, glad you liked the character! hic!
@eroaxe thanks a lot for the good feedback. yeah we agree, the puzzles don't always suit a jam. A vague puzzle in a game like inside you don't mind spending 10 minutes on figuring out... but in a jam I don't think the audience is the same or as patient. Murder of hoarders was sadly a valid strategy... they just love the shiny :(
@jeremy-ryan lovely fan art, Beardadette is honoured! We agree about the hiccup timing. The music beat and the screen effect does help, but the screen effect coming on 1 second before isn't as helpful as it could be. The intention was for it to start to fade in more intensely, but we never got the chance to refine it properly. I think maybe something subtle like 3 dots above the character that would come on like a 1 - 2 - 3 - HIC count down would have helped.
@jvdwijk thanks for kind words. We would have liked another half a day to polish all, but we were happy with the core aesthetic at least!
@stvup thanks for the feedback! brainoid designed some good puzzles - they had the risk of getting people stuck, but we're pleased you enjoyed solving them!
@zubspace thanks - our first time doing this style in Unreal in a jam, we think it came together well! 2d stuff in unreal has a bad reputation as there are issues - but was fun to explore it!
@thoastbot appreciate it! yeah we felt the theme was going to produce a bunch of games of the same type - so we wanted to find something that was relatable to all yet not something conventional in a game. Due to 10 seconds being quite long, we had to make sure not all the game puzzles / platforming relied on the hiccup, but glad it still felt a core part of the experience.
@michaelaranda thanks for your solid feedback when playing it on stream!
@rincs Beardadette is flattered by your praise. She's actually blushing! :D We are glad you enjoyed our game - one of the biggest parts of the jam for us is hoping people enjoy and react positively to our games!
@mika314 yes, there's a bug with orientation that happens if you press R to restart when you're already in the process of restarting! Fixes itself after another restart though so we didn't rush to fix it! As for the cog puzzle, its a tricky one - the intended way was to stop fan with rock, run cog into the lift, then run back and remove the stone - then the hoarder would get killed by fan when running back to his home with the cog! However, occasionally it bugs out and the hoarder doesn't get killed by the fan, so it can be a bit finickity.
@bobfish thanks a lot - its a highlight of our jam to watch other people on stream play and react to our games. Appreciated your time.
@tyrannas yeah - we wish we could have made the UI / visuals easier for people to know when the hiccup was coming. We had a timer on screen when debugging, which tricked us into thinking it'd be okay - but def was something people took time to learn.
@ukulelefury thanks for playing our game (and for your keynote video!). So I think the trouble we have is that the puzzles can be brute forced, and from watching streamers play our game we notice a lot of people kept trying the non-intended solutions until it happened to work with some luck / good timing. This can leave the player feeling frustrated or not understanding how they solved the puzzle. Most of the puzzles have a solid way to solve them, but yeah - a flaw of our design perhaps to not force players to solve the puzzle only in 1 way.
@badcop it was great to watch you play - thanks for streaming the games, don't worry about the vod! we were there LIVE! <3

I think this game is one of the most solid entries of the jam. The art was so great, that it could easily have been a game that was prepping for EA or full release.
I think that there were some issues with how the colliders worked, and the hiccup mechanic may be the culprit around it. Speaking of, I found the hiccup mechanic quite smart and fun to think up! The enemies that got in the way were really annoying, and that added to its charm.
Props for making this, I enjoyed playing it!
Yet again, a really solid fun game with great visuals. Really enjoyed playing it. Well done.
Wow, great gameplay and amazing art style. I love this graphics <3
Really awesome art and design, the whole aesthetic was amazing. Really enjoyed this, well done!
Very nice game! I enjoyed both the gameplay and the graphics very much. I found the sound effects very funny. Great job!
I love this game! Amazing art, great gameplay and such a cute premise xD I don't think I have a single negative thing to say about it. You outdid yourselves this time, bravo!
Here's a VOD of my gameplay https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1625333439 (The performance was flawless on my end, it's the recording that is low quality, sorry about that)

Nice game!
The art and sound design are gorgeous.
The hiccup mechanic is funny, but quite hard to use properly when you need it for big jumps. I'm not sure I understood the last puzzles but I got to the end anyway haha.
Great job and thanks for the game, I had fun ✨

Thanks for submitting your game to stream!
Bummed we couldn't coordinate a time to have y'all in chat, but glad we were able to play it at least!
I think this game takes the cake as "most adorable" one y'all have made. I think my favorite aspect though was weirdly the diegetic title screen y'all did that went right into the gameplay. Integrated tutorials like that make my designer heart swell.
Really good game! Cute graphics and fitting audio. Good variety of puzzles, and the game duration is suitable for a game jam. I think you could have used the 10 seconds element more, like how you used it for the last puzzle where you had to time the hiccup with the jump. Would have been a better use of the theme. Now it mostly feels like an annoying element tacked on to an otherwise great platformer/puzzle game. That's just a minor detail though! Good job :)
Oh, also! I forgot about the whole drinking water thing until the end. This was actually a cool and original feature which could have been integrated more into the puzzles.
Wow, this is one of the most polished LD games I've ever seen! Looks, sounds and plays so well, with a lot of adorable character 😭 The general Paper Mario style is very nice, and then there are a lot of cool effects on top, like the water and the see-through mask when you're behind a wall. The ending did feel a little abrupt, with the level of everything else I got primed to expect a fancy outro 😅 Impressive amount of levels/puzzles for a jam game. I think the one quality of life upgrade I'd like is something to help me count the ten seconds since timing was tricky with some jumps; would've been nice to have a visual or auditory beat on every second, and not just the vignette right before a hiccough. Regardless, amazing. Super well done!!
