Very nice game! Amazing everything! Super hard, but super fun!

acoto87 2018-04-24 15:56

Very nicely done!

The mix between the genres is a little weird but interesting. Probably the chasing ghosts are too hard to avoid because it seems to change the target position (where the player is) every frame, it probably needs a little more randomness on that to make it easier to select the card, aim and throw.

Good job with the graphics and audio. and with the game in general. :)

kjeks 2018-04-24 16:09

Very nice job on this, from the gameplay to the soundtrack and graphics. Allround solid game and really fun, with a lot of variety!

If there was something I would comment on, it's that the game can be a bit too hard sometimes, but I feel if you let the player walk while trying to play a card, that this would help somewhat, but that needs balancing too then. Good work nonetheless!

dantiger 2018-04-24 16:45

I LOVE it, it is actually similar to a plan we had before we choose something else. I see a lot of potential in this idea =) one suggestion I give is let the player slow down time or something, give the player some breath time to see the cards. the worst part about combining action with card game, is that one is about instinct and the other is about planning. so if you give time for the player to see the cards he has and plan his actions, the game may get easier to play.

sky 2018-04-24 17:00

As a big fan of dungeon crawlers and rouge-like games, I have a bit of a soft spot for games like this. That said, VERY well done! For me, the customized deck-building at the beginning is an amazing feature as you can essentially play the game however you want and form new strategies as you play. I'm impressed with how much content you managed to squeeze in and how functionally everything works together in such a short amount of time! Mad props to your team 👍

lemonbalmgames 2018-04-24 17:16

Wow! I'm in awe, to be honest. This is the second LD41 game I've played so far that I'm sure would enjoy a commercial success (if built upon of course) and the first one I had to consciously stop myself from playing. Also, Cardcade is the first LD41 game that I'm sure I'm going to play again. I don't know how good the balancing is, because cost reduction + summons + kiting seems a bit OP at the moment but I'm sure you can nail that down with testing ("Free Cost" card almost assuredly has to go). Other than that everything is superb, from graphics and music (though that rap song might be a bit much:P) through game feel and theme. Amazing job! You have a great team of talented people and it shows.

literallyjosh 2018-04-24 18:32

Actually just incredible. Make this into a full commercial game and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

This game has lots going for it. The feel, humor, atmosphere, and most importantly, fun-factor.

Loved the visuals, enjoyed learning about the different cards and trying them out. Whether it was crafting new strategies, fighting the squatting slav boss, or getting a lucky draw (toads, toads, free card, toads, free card, toads, free card, toads), the game was ultimately fun.

One suggestion: At first, the amount of cards seemed a bit overwhelming. Starting with 20 cards is a bit too much for a new player; however, this is a problem for every card-based game. So a great way to address this problem is to look at how Hearthstone handles first-timers and build off of that, that is, if you want to release the game to a wider audience.

In summary, I'd buy it, but only if it had more toads.

ectucker1 2018-04-25 01:22

Fun game. It was hard to drag a card to the screen and dodge at the same time, but that comes with the genres being incompatible. I was also somewhat confused by the deck builder at first, and ended up hitting escape and closing the game in an attempt to navigate it. Still, it's impressive that you were able to create such a variety of cards and fairly smooth combat in a weekend.

brent 2018-04-25 02:02

Great game. I really enjoyed the different abilities. I loved the target dummy + stone / spikes combo.

Great work!

martintristan 2018-04-25 02:27

wow this is amazing and pretty fun! nice art and polish. the mix of the 2 genres really works.

pixels-everywhere 2018-04-25 02:44

The pixel art looks very nice

tigerj 2018-04-25 03:04

Excellent! The only two things I did not like was having to start over if I died (would be nice to have a check point or respawn outside the boss room) and I noticed after everything died I could press i over and over until I had a hand I liked. It would be easier to have a default "starting hand" or load out in the deck builder screen somehow. These are VERY Subjective points I am making.

Your game was wonderful to play. Thanks everyone who helped out! You must all be part ofa very talented team to pull this off!

jcmonkey 2018-04-25 04:33

this game wasnt too bad, once i figured out that i had to drag the card onto the board, and not click and hold the card in place. totally a different game experience. the art and sound is good, there isnt any really programming issues in the game, other then that click and hold thing, i would change that to click and drag. this is better then alot of the other card games i played.

ripter 2018-04-25 04:59

This mix works amazingly well. Great job!

loois-messina 2018-04-25 05:50

Way too cool for Ludum Dare! This feels like it could be a real game. I really appreciated the fact that each card had its own unique art, voice over, AND effect in the game. That's quite an accomplishment. Great job!

kindred 2018-04-25 06:19

Wow. Seriously too deep for an LD game. I was taken by surprise by the depth of this. Thank you for making such an awesome entry!

cg-fred 2018-04-25 10:15

Very cool game and amazing that you pulled this off as a LD game :D

borodar 2018-04-25 10:47

Awesome combination of genres and smooth gameplay. Would be cool to have hotkeys for cards instead of just dragging them to the playfield. Anyway, game is amazing! Great job!

meskaline 2018-04-25 11:09

Great concept and good execution. Audio is pretty good. Good job. And good luck polishing it a bit.

gipzo 2018-04-25 12:07

Nicely done! Had fun playing your game, guys. Solid entry :)

kamtar 2018-04-25 13:14

haha, that song, great :D

northernhawk 2018-04-25 16:02

This game is just awesome. I feel like you could put it directly on Steam. The only thing that i can "complain" is that the ghost are so slow compare to the player so it is easy to kite enemies (but that is just a balance issue, easy to fix). The other thing is that sometimes when you shoot a frog car they all collides with the same enemy when they spawn. This is a game i would definitely play if it comes out.

croewens 2018-04-25 21:00

You had my attention when you started rapping. I loved it  I only disliked having to start over on death but that's OK. I'm a big fan of dungeon crawlers and rouge-like games, and I must say you hit the sweet spot! Well done. Please do checkout & review my submission as well!

captainpilot 2018-04-25 22:02

Love the concept and it's plays really well. Solid game.

jaredmercer 2018-04-25 22:28

This is one of the first Jam games I've played that I would buy for $20! It gives off Isaac/Yugioh/Pokemon-like vibes. The procedural rooms always felt connected, and the occasional break room is a great for giving the player a moment to breathe. This was fantastic, I really cant't wait to play whatever you make next!

mrbreadman 2018-04-25 22:54

This game was a blast to play, it felt like a full fledged game! The song in beginning was hilarious and I was surprised by how many cards you guys fit into the game. The music, art, and use of the theme were all executed in a amazing way. Very well done guys!

krp 2018-04-26 01:50

One of the best games I've played so far!

pickledbrain 2018-04-26 01:58

Really interesting. I could get into a game like this. Allowing the player to change their deck between rooms was a great design choice.

giovannibarrottu 2018-04-26 04:27

The art and music for this are really good, the gameplay is fun and works well, and it achieves a good overall mood.

There are some QOL changes that I think would be good though.

- Would be nice to be able to move in the menu with wasd and not just arrow keys, and probably mouse control too since this is a game that uses the mouse a lot.

- E as an option to open inventory would be nice as it's closer to wasd,

- Moving while casting cards? I don't really see a reason for being forced to stand still. I found being at the top of the stage is really advantageous as then you can drag a card a minimum distance to cast it, while if you are at the bottom, you have to drag the card much further to cast.

- Some more enemy variety would be nice, it's just 3 enemies that all just move toward you in the same way

- It might be interesting to make the deck work like an actual deck and you use up your cards instead of it just being a random chance. Then it can reset once you use all your cards, or you could have cards that revive dead cards etc.

Obviously there is a big time constraint for this Jam, and I think this game is really great for a Jam game, but those are things I think could improve future versions.

langotriel 2018-04-26 07:15

@dantiger In regards to the idea to slow time down, "Time Warp" was a card that didn't make it in but it was part of the 40 planned cards.

raoul 2018-04-26 08:27

Interesting concept, simple but effective graphics, it made me want to play the Magic card game ;-p Good job !

yahialds 2018-04-26 13:10

With some more polish and content I would buy this on Steam, not much more to say. I loved the idea and the concept and I wish I had as good ideas as this one. LOVED it.

justinooncx 2018-04-26 15:12

Holy shit, I wouldn't have guessed this was done in a game jam! The amount of polish and art in this game is... well, it's production quality, really. Like a true indie title. So much content to go through, too! I find the card-throwing system a little iffy, though, since you need to reach down to grab a card, then pull it up to throw it... Miiiight be easier if I used the scroll wheel to select which card, so I can toss them quickly and efficiently! Good job, overall, you guys are great!

blazexenon 2018-04-26 15:44

Great Game, The game itself is awesome, however maybe allow the player to move while using your cards? Since the enemies are constantly following you, you don't really have time to plan and aim your shots. Also, it sucks that is has a dependency on LOVE cause it requires other software to play. Maybe if there is a way, integrate it into your game? Overall, really enjoyed playing it! c:

r4ndomthunder 2018-04-26 15:48

Really good game. I like so much the graphics and sounds. The gameplay is fun except when he has useless cards in his hand. The idea is fantastic and the realization even more. The only problem probably is the less enemy variety. Good job guys! ;D

randomhuman 2018-04-26 17:19

Wow, so much content in this game! The sound effects, music and graphics are all really great, and work well together to create an epic, fast paced mood. The gameplay is a lot of fun, but something feels a bit off about how the aiming is handled given how closely the enemies trail you. Some of the cards were quite hard to use because of this as well (spikes, boulder), though on my second play through I realised there was a lot of synergy between those and the teleport card - create some distance with teleport and then drop a rock on 'em! I didn't get a chance to try it, but I definitely appreciate the thought that went into the deck, in this and other synergies.

Overall a really excellent entry, good work team!

bitten-toast-games 2018-04-27 09:09

This was amazing! I didn't want to put the game down, couldn't stop playing! So good! I wanted to see what new spells there are, the variety is so good! And having to think on your feet with the cards you have in hand was great! You should definitely continue this! Died to the frog guy that kept spawning frogs!

nuthen 2018-04-27 16:27

Awesome game! It was really fun to unlock new cards and customize my deck between each room. I had trouble selecting/aiming my cards sometimes, which made the game a bit more difficult.

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-04-27 16:31

Good job! Cool game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

victorcrafty 2018-04-27 16:55

Cool Game! Super audio and cool graphics! Good job

honest-dan 2018-04-28 01:25

Very polished game throughout, music was good and nice to see a few different tracks for different areas (boss for example). Visuals were nice, cards fitted with the intended style / artistic approach. One of the few flaws I found was just lack of intuition within my first few seconds of controlling the game - meaning menu navigation etc. I had had on wsad and the mouse, and so arrows and space on menus, and escape closing the program caused some accidental navigation we could say! I initially though having the I key to access your deck was a bad thing as its between left and right hand, but you dont use it during combat etc so I actually think it was fine.

The spells became quite satisfying to use once you got used to their use and timings etc. A few spells I found harder to use / inconsistent, like arcane missiles. I also found some spells a lot more useful - so in future a look at maybe balancing cards would be worthwhile.

Combat was a little samey on the normal rooms, but was please to see different mechanics / format when I came across a boss. A bit of audio / visual feedback when you take damage, maybe some invincibility period afterwards too, would have been appreciated. Maybe some of the "standard rooms" could have some more variance, maybe some obstacles or something to line of sight enemies, or even areas of danger which are not enemies (traps etc).

But the above critique is of a standard game, to think you all this in a game jam entry is super impressive - even with the team size you have. Good work people <3

bentglasstube 2018-04-28 02:21

This was a really interesting mashup. I liked the mechanics of it but I think I picked too many useless cards which made the game really hard since I just had to burn through teleports until I got something good. The boss was a fun surprise, too, but he whooped me.

dovakla 2018-04-28 03:48

This is great! I've seen a few other card games in this LD but yours is the first where you actually throw the cards as weapons, and it works really well. It's very impressive how many different cards you managed to get into it.

My one complaint is that it almost gives you too many cards. The player starts out with so many and then you get more so quickly that it's hard to actually try them all out.

mza 2018-04-28 10:56

My type of game. I can play this game for a long time. I like the variety of cards the game offers - it provides for interesting game mechanics. One suggestion is to have a vulnerability period where the player is flashing. This'll help prevent instant death by a gang of ghosts.

Really fun game and would like to see how this game gets updated in the future.

goplite 2018-04-28 15:26

Very polished and complete, great graphics and voiceover. I like that you implemented deckbuilding, many "cards +" games on this jam miss that. Also found myself using different combinations of cards for different enemies which is a good thing for cards based game. Great work!

velocity7 2018-04-28 16:00

Hahahahah its funny

neontropics 2018-04-28 16:27

Wow this is super impressive! Great mashup of genres (I love Super Smash TV as well which helps), and great graphics/music/atmosphere. Very impressive selection of cards and general polish as well.

The beginning is a bit overwhelming - it would be good to start with fewer types of cards and then work your way up a bit more. An while the graphics are really good already for a Ludum Dare, some more feedback and animations when hitting enemies with cards would really add to it as well.

secretpocketcat 2018-04-29 13:33

The intro's sick and the scope is super impressive, although I'm not a fan of kiting and the card throwing tends to lean into that kinda gameplay. Also, some cards could be just an instant play instead of a throw (mana recharge) and the teleport felt kinda useless due to the duration of the throw, although the throwing kinda makes sense in that scenario.

pietro-ferrantelli 2018-04-29 14:51

Wow, my new top game this LD, this is the kind of Ludum Dare I wan to play. The scope is huge, best audio I've seen and it was a delight to lay. Also best trailer ever, you seem to be an efficient team :)

rebecca-kremer 2018-04-29 18:32

Fantastic entry! Loved everything about it! The art, visuals and mood were all wonderful with a fresh and well-executed take on the theme :) Keep up the great work!

jin9310 2018-04-29 21:02

Amazing work guys! Every aspect is mastered and I am really surprised how addictive this is. Will have to come back to this again :) Awesome!

morrilet 2018-04-30 01:15

Wow, this game was SUPER fun to play. The genres you picked worked really well together and I really enjoyed building to an archetype with my deck. My biggest complaints are that escape insta-closes the game (huge bummer when you accidentally use escape to get out of the deck-building screen) and that you can't see the mana cost of cards in your deck. Other than that though I really enjoyed this entry. Awesome work!

invader 2018-05-03 19:32

Wow! That is the most polished entry I've seen so far. All aspects are done very nicely. I love the graphics and sound. And the gameplay also fits the theme well. Good job!

ponchoguy 2018-05-08 16:46

Wow, thanks for joining me on the stream  I was addicted from the start

Man what can I say, the cards were great for strategic planning, the vocals were grand on picking the cards. A real pleasure to play.

As for something I would add, it would be better if the cards were put on a pedestal and can be picked up instead of just being given to you straight after the room - I sometimes missed what I got when I was running through

Something if this is further developed would be special rooms, probably something fitting with the theme would be a card claw machine :yum:

Other than that, a great play! I had alot of fun playing your game!

philstrahl 2018-05-08 17:20

Very solid entry!! Had great fun playing, even though it took me a while to figure out that/how I had to drop some cards after picking up new ones. It confused me a bit that this is possible at all times, I assumed you can only do it at a cardcade machine.

I adored the 80s soundtrack and the overall presentation was very good. Maybe the font on the cards was a bit hard to read, but that's minor stuff.

If you want to watch me make it to the first boss (barely), have a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUjvukr54GQ

2018-05-10 12:47

Nice graphics, interesting concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgRYnPldaL4

daragongames 2018-05-13 10:41

This game is inspiring. It uses the Theme perfectly and the Gameplay works out. Graphics and Sound create a fitting mood and the Game has an incredible amount of cards. It's really inspiring to see what a well composed Team can do and it raises my bar for the next jam. Congratulation on making such a awesome Game :)

anubhav-kashyap 2018-05-14 10:23

@Simon Rahnasto It seems that the Mac build isn't working. It's showing No Game.

simon-rahnasto 2018-05-14 10:41

@Anubhav-Kashyap You need to use Löve 0.10.2 Let me know if it still doesnt work then.

anubhav-kashyap 2018-05-14 10:47

@Simon-rahnasto Wait a sec.... I downloaded the game and unzipped it. Inside is an executable called love. I ran that. Is that incorrect? If so, what should I do?

simon-rahnasto 2018-05-14 11:15

@anubhav-kashyap Yes then you have downloaded the Windows version. You had to download the multiplatform version, but to make it more simple for you I made a Mac port. On itch make sure you download "Cardcade (OSX)" for Mac.

joe40001 2018-05-15 04:06

I streamed myself playing your game. You can watch the vod of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeVofreh9pA

(Starts at 4:57:30)

simon-rahnasto 2018-05-15 10:16

@joe40001 Thank you for playing. The Löve framework only needs to be installed if you want to run the multi-platform version on Linux or something similar. The .exe (Windows) and .app (Mac) works straight out of the box.

joe40001 2018-05-15 10:27

@Simon Rahnasto Oh, thanks. It was a great game. Good job.

sebastianscaini 2018-05-15 14:31

Wow this one was a lot of fun! I love the art, and the voice lines that play when you throw cards, and just how throwing cards feels!

Great job!

sokuaisushi 2018-05-15 19:33

This game is so much fun and looks super great too!!

Really great job on this game, can't wait to see more from you all :)
