LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Metal Miner by Neon 2021-04-26T15:03:35Z

As you mention, it's not a very complete game, but there are some solid mechanics here that you could build on. One suggestion - have you thought about giving the player a light source? It gets real dark underground! Some nice 3D models and animations, and some appropriate SFX. Nice job

Well, that sounds fun! by Jani Nykanen 2021-04-26T12:10:09Z

Really cool art and great to see a range of different enemies with different behaviours. It's surprisingly tricky! Good work

Tic-Tac-Run! by mvasko2 2021-04-26T14:37:54Z

Well I had fun! Ran for 2:52. The music kinda slaps - that kick drum is super punchy and made me want to keep playing :joy: The gameplay is pretty solid, although it sometimes feels like the obstacles are a bit too close together. Having to quickly move two spaces in a really short space feels quite challenging. Good job.

Deeper and Deeper by minibobbo 2021-04-26T18:43:43Z

Fantastic! Looks stunning, the audio complements perfectly and the mechanics are unique and pretty tight. Great stuff :grin:

Rover goes deeper by pfeyffer 2021-04-26T18:10:21Z

Nice puzzle game! Would appreciate some audio, but good work in all the other aspects.

Codename::GreyHat by Train27 2021-04-26T15:11:26Z

Hm, it didn't quite work for me. The terminal prompt wasn't in the right place and everything gradually wandered up on the screen until it disappeared. I know you mentioned needing to run it at 1080p, but it seems like the Unity player is set to run in fullscreen, so I have no control over the resolution it's running it. That might be something to revisit and make sure it can run on all screen sizes.

I also had no idea how to solve the problem. Simple commands like `cd ..` didn't work so I just got stuck in a directory with no obvious path forward. I really liked the idea, but it just didn't quite come together for me.

@ me in a comment and let me know if it's something I'm doing wrong. I'd love to give it a proper go so I can rate it!

Codename::GreyHat by Train27 2021-04-26T16:05:41Z

@train27

RE the default resolution, it seemed to default to my monitor resolution. I'm not very up on how Unity's scaling works but I think the player's default behaviour is fullscreen at native resolution. So if you're on a 1080p monitor, it would work fine. My resolution is 2560*1080, though. But yeah, I tried making my first Unity game with a UI only a couple of weeks ago and making sure everything scales to fit the screen is really confusing at first :joy:

RE commands, I missed `cd /`. In my mind, I wanted to go back up one level. I hadn't clocked that I started at `/` and could just use the absolute path! Also missed that `list-commands` takes a number. I didn't get back many commands when I used it without one, which left me feeling even more lost! I'll give it another shot.

Codename::GreyHat by Train27 2021-04-26T17:04:13Z

Got through a lot more this time. Still annoying having to scroll up endlessly to get back to where I left off! I didn't get the right answer; the ending I did get was pretty dark :sweat_smile: I really enjoyed the bits of the game that were meant to be! Just a shame I had so much trouble with the interface

Codename::GreyHat by Train27 2021-04-26T17:41:20Z

It's only my first LD, but from my reading of the rules, you are allowed to fix bugs like this

Better Safe Than Sorry by Ramkey 2021-04-26T18:20:41Z

Quit confusing to learn the mechanic but it is quite unique and fun to play once you get the hang of it.

trabitboy_ld_48 by trabitboy 2021-04-26T19:11:43Z

Nice game. Simple but fun, and some well thought out levels.

Deep Within by Untitled Studios 2021-04-26T14:50:49Z

Not bad! I was a little confused about how to actually exit the cave at first. Maybe a bit more signposting would help. But I had fun trying to clear my debt

Into The Depths by Erk 2021-04-26T11:30:49Z

Great work! Simple but fun mechanics and lovely art. It was quite frustrating getting stuck in the mine without any ladders, though

Into The Depths by Erk 2021-04-26T14:12:19Z

@erk How about a mechanic where you can always get home safely, like a 'Recover' button where someone comes and helps you back to the surface? If you want to penalise players for using it, you could have it take away some fraction of the ore they have on them. That way you're still incentivised to build a system of ladders but you won't get stuck in your mine!

Leaky Faucet by Astavie 2021-04-27T08:51:03Z

This is very cool - a well put together mystery and the writing draws you in. I still have more to dig through to find the culprit! Fun take on the theme too, great job.

In the Hole by Kramdar 2021-04-26T19:05:04Z

Nice concept and some decent mechanics are implemented well. The one major flaw is it seems to cost 2 minerals to extract 1 mineral, so I can only ever rack up more debt? Some good work here, though, and I could easily see it turned into something more complete with just a bit more time.

The Red Crystal by Bastienre4 2021-04-26T11:11:33Z

Great job. Really tense and atmospheric. The head bob was a bit disorientating for me - would appreciate an option to turn it down or off in future. But thanks for the game and well done!

The MindDiver by Pierre.F 2021-04-26T17:38:32Z

Really great stuff! The art style is brilliant. Combined with the audio, it creates so much depth and atmosphere. The gameplay was just a little bit too slow for me, probably because I wandered up and down for ages before realising I could pick up the key without being in the same room as it. Apart from that, really great work for the 48hrs!

Tower of Darkness by Benjamin123 2021-04-26T14:58:23Z

I'm having trouble running the HTML5 version or even downloading a Windows build. Please @ me if you can fix it or host somewhere else so I can check out your game!

Tower of Darkness by Benjamin123 2021-04-27T07:56:59Z

Thanks for fixing that, I gave it a go. You've got some very nice art and audio. Unfortunately, I found the controls a little tricky. I mainly just had a really hard time getting the attack animation to trigger. It spoils the fun a bit when you can't tell whether you'll be able to hit an enemy in time. You can definitely tell some good work's gone into it, but maybe your time would have been better spent refining the core mechanics before adding more enemy types? Overall, good job though!

DRILLER by glitchman 2021-04-26T12:36:24Z

Great work. It looks great, has a great atmosphere and the gameplay is solid. A few of little gripes: unlike @seafishelle, I don't find getting lost in heavy fog very fun! I'd love something just to help point me back to the drill. Another nitpick was that I didn't enjoy clicking 100 times to unload the cubes I'd just mined. Maybe you could let me click and hold to save my fingers the strain? It think it also takes too many cubes to hit 100%. My patience didn't last long enough to get there. It's only minor criticism, though. Really well done overall, it feels like a really well constructed game.

Foldception by Thulium Games 2021-04-26T15:56:00Z

Very cool, and an original take on the theme. If I had any criticism, I think the pacing might be a little off. Most of the games are quite short and fast paced, but it felt like I was spending much longer on the pong and the "don't touch the sides" maze levels. I also found it a bit too repetitive by time I reached 50+, but that's fair enough for a jam game! Visually, it's excellent, and the audio is good too. Great job.

(Edit: Actually, looking at your screenshots, I think I had a small bug. In the 'turn over the correct pair of cards' game, the cards had no back, they just disappeared when flipped over. This made it a little harder to tell where the cards were supposed to be, but it was still playable)

Foldception by Thulium Games 2021-04-26T16:25:39Z

@thulium-games Only issue I saw, yeah

Dungeon Diver by Caue Henrique 2021-04-26T18:04:43Z

Really nice visual style, decent audio and the gameplay is tight and fun. Great stuff. Just a shame I suck at it :joy:

Plunge by ZwodahS 2021-04-27T10:02:46Z

Nice game. As others have said, the bouncing is more irritating than fun but there's some solid gameplay and a simple but well put together art style. Good job!

Trposhi by mira 2021-04-26T18:30:42Z

I really liked this. It looks and sounds good, and the gameplay is fun. I only wish there was something bigger to work towards. That would have kept me playing for longer. As it was, I didn't see much reason to keep digging!

Gone Diggin' by XeduR 2021-04-27T15:54:37Z

Fun and very replayable. The way the levels rotate but you can still keep digging down was pretty unique, and the mechanics are simple, solid and fun. Great art too! My main criticism is that the action's over so quickly. I'd have loved a bit more depth to really get invested in a run. As it is, I feel like I'm just getting started and then I'm out of time.

ATOMIC deepness by Kevin Meissner 2021-04-26T14:27:26Z

Great work. The 3d models are cool - I'm especially fond of the angry looking cockroaches! You've created a dark, gloomy atmosphere without making it too dark to see. It's quite fun to play and the mutations mechanic makes it more replayable. I think the main area that could be improved if you had more time to spend on it would just be fleshing it out into a more varied game. Good stuff!

Root Crop by Moomka 2021-04-26T12:06:31Z

Decent idea and nice art, but I didn't really understand what I was trying to achieve. It ended up feeling like a game of connect the dots but that doesn't make a nice picture at the end :stuck_out_tongue: I'd have liked a bit more help to understand what my aim is and how to play. Nice work, though

Cleaning Diver by JaviCoder 2021-04-26T11:59:59Z

Beautiful art style and sound design. The game was very relaxing and atmospheric. One thing I didn't like was having to click so much to move. I'd much prefer to be able to click and hold to move around. I also didn't manage to find any barrels despite swimming around for quite a while. Might just be me, but it was a bit frustrating after a while! Really nice work though

Space Jump by Gaminghamster 2021-04-26T17:25:36Z

Liked the soundtrack!

Ziggurat by nethead 2021-04-26T19:42:47Z

This is amazing! Visually stunning, an excellent soundtrack, and really solid platforming. Outstanding to pull this off in 48hrs

Mullet Time by Lajbert 2021-04-26T19:23:35Z

Hey, I'm having trouble getting the entire game window visible. My monitor is 2560*1080, so maybe that's the issue. The top and bottom of the game are cut off since the aspect ratio is much wider than 16:9. Worst of all, it cut off the settings I needed to change the resolution in the video settings menu. Something to think about for your engine, maybe.

What I could see was a lot of fun. Some of it was a little tricky, like the jetpack felt too sensitive for me to be able to negotiate the spike-lined corridors without hitting anything, and there were a _lot_ of bullets flying at me at times.

But an excellent start for the 48 hours, well done!

Sweet Dreams by LeHaine 2021-04-26T11:22:28Z

Really good stuff. Beautiful art and solid mechanics

Prospector Paranoia by Kovi 2021-04-26T17:18:33Z

The art style is great. The gameplay feels just a little slow and clunky, but it's got a nice atmosphere. Well done!

Into the Dark by twoshoedlou 2021-04-26T11:42:31Z

Really liking the clean and simple graphics and it has a nice moody feel to it. It did get so dark in places that I couldn't really see the enemies or their projectiles, which felt a bit frustrating. But solid gameplay and I enjoyed finding my prize! Well done

The circuit by AdamsMcCall 2021-04-26T15:24:07Z

Very cool concept and well executed! Nice art and a polished experience. Would, of course, love to see more levels and some audio, but great job

The Cavern Of Madness by Nature Studioz 2021-04-26T14:45:19Z

The sound when you fall down to the next level had me laughing out loud. Love it! But I did think the platforming felt a little clunky, and I didn't like some of the levels. In particular, I don't like the levels where you have to react as soon as the level loads or you'll die. It doesn't give me a chance to figure out what's going on and feels unnecessarily punishing. Apart from that, the graphics were pretty nice, decent audio and a pretty fun game. Great job!

A Fairway Down! by Haydads 2021-04-26T11:50:15Z

That was good fun! Took me 82 hits. Pretty unique take on the theme and I liked some of the little touches, like how the ground closes up behind you as you drop into hole 14. Great work

Canyoneer by Kieron Woodhouse 2021-04-26T09:48:04Z

Hey @storm-rider, for Windows? Just uploaded one for you!

Umbra by Zettabit 2021-04-26T17:59:51Z

Nice! Really solid core gameplay, some fun levels, great art style, decent audio. All round great entry, really enjoyable. I think it could turn into a great full game with more time to flesh it out and refine the mechanics.

DUNGEON SMASHER by goodwincek 2021-04-26T12:14:35Z

Cool game. The gameplay is maybe just a little simplistic, it seems like there's no way to fail? But the visual style is awesome are the sound effects go great with it. I don't know if it's supposed to glitch out when I'm smashing but it did that quite a lot. It seemed the camera would just disappear off somewhere else. Great stuff, though, well done!

Psychology of the Depths by saintchristopher777 2021-04-26T11:35:26Z

Unfortunately couldn't actually play on my ultrawide monitor as the canvas scaled to match the width, cutting off the top and bottom. Looked really interesting, though!

Psychology of the Depths by saintchristopher777 2021-04-27T22:14:54Z

@saintchristopher777 Thanks for the fix! (Well, I'll always take a webGL build over anything else.) It was a cool idea. Did take me a while to figure out the mechanics. I think a big block of text at the start isn't the best way to learn, but hey, it's hard to do much more in a jam. Great visuals, and the voiceover was a nice touch you don't see often. Well done!

Surface by lb01 2021-04-26T19:35:30Z

Fantastic. Really polished, looks great, fun to play, great music (love how it picks up when you get into the action). The change in pace between mining asteroids and aerial combat is very enjoyable too. Heck, even the little bit of backstory is well thought out.

Deeper in Debt by NorthernDonut 2021-04-26T12:23:28Z

I only spent $192! The artwork's nice, quite fun, and seems like quite a unique take on the theme. The gameplay is a little simple and a tiny bit buggy, but great job for your first game!
