LD26 — Minimalism

_M_ by GranaDa 2013-05-01T15:17:00

Very interesting puzzle, and the graphics and audio are astounding. I couldn't figure it out - suddenly it just ended and I'd done it, but had no idea how. I just kept matching up the circle and triangle and it kept doing stuff, but I didn't see any pattern. Sometimes I could get them to match up simultaneously, but not always.

Guru by BrothersT 2013-05-01T15:44:00

Good game! Couldn't figure out the fish one, and the others took me a while, but a good game!

Super 3D BlockLand by hardycore 2013-04-30T16:12:00

I couldn't get it to run. :( Using 64-bit Windows 8, and I installed MonoGame, but it refuses to run, which is disappointing, because the previous comments made me want to play it.

Space Jellyfish by [-BipolarDesign+] 2013-04-30T18:31:00

Fun. A bit hard to control, although perfect control would hamper the feeling of this game more than help it. Hectic and out of control were the operative words. The sound design was excellent. I got "kamikaze" each time, but I spent most of my time (once I figured out how) collecting pods of enemies to lead into the mines.

Rhythm Rogue by bowlercaptain 2013-04-30T05:37:00

We seem to have missed mentioning that you attack with the arrow keys or joypad buttons - space only begins the game or goes down a floor.
Also, if you'll suffer through the first floor, I think your pacing worries will be resolved.

minsweeper by Attrition 2013-05-06T04:04:00

Feels really good the first time you kill an enemy with only one orbiter. The boss was definitely disproportionately hard - round 6 probably took longer than the rest of the game. The main problem with the boss was that no matter what strategy was used, the first attack always boiled down to Clicking, flinching, and hoping. The major problem was the sense of helplessness - your orbiters, the Boss' slaves, their orbiters, and each character all move at about the same speed, so most of what happens feels out of your hands, and deaths feel like the game's fault. Also, if you're too far within the radius of the boss and retreating, he can chase you down and kill you, so basically every attack is a one-off shot in the dark. I finally beat him by just brute-forcing the chance - holding the left mouse button and charging, which was successful only a few tries in. As most other comments have mentioned, it definitely feels suited to multiplayer - whether a game in itself or a competitive mini-game in something larger, it's fast-paced and highly chaotic, a la bomberman or any good Mario Party minigame.

I DIED. by NateNaterson 2013-05-01T01:02:00

... ew. Nicely done graphics and game play, but (and this is personal preference) the art style kind of turned me off. Audio was slightly annoying. Loved the game play mechanic of bashing in to stuff, though.

Labyrinthine Tower of Misery and Flashing Colors by BipoleMoment 2013-05-04T15:22:00

Very nice game. I'm not sure if this is a new idea, but even if it isn't, it's the best execution I've seen. The only qualm I had with the music was that when it changed notes it didn't do so on a down beat, so it kept screwing me up. :/ Also, at times it became a tad difficult to find where the walls were and where the floor was.

Boxley by blackcode 2013-04-30T16:26:00

Good start. A few more platforming elements would have been nice. I especially enjoyed that the non-minimalistic toasts were the enemies - I would have liked to see other things like that. Music was pretty good, too.

Fjoxel by Pixelsalt 2013-04-30T16:31:00

Very nice. Not anything new, but very well done. I would have liked some sounds, but everything else was quite well done.

Somsnosa by Mase 2013-05-01T00:58:00

Audio was good, though a little annoying as time progressed. Graphics were wonderful, but the game play didn't mesh well with the art - the black and white cave was an eyesore. It wasn't until about 10 minutes in that I realized I was playing an RPG.

Y&P by tobbez 2013-05-08T05:53:00

Seems to be a reflex test - once you know the direction from you to the potato, there is very little strategy at all involved in reaching it. The major challenge is figuring out that direction quickly. Works as a Bronco Trolleys-esque mini-game.

Rude Bear Rising by Alex Rose 2013-04-30T04:59:00

Definitely had the Megaman feel of starting out insignificant in power compared to the bosses, finally finding one you can defeat, and using that to slowly find a leg up on all the others. The infinite-loop-death was annoying, but unintentional. Didn't have much to do with minimalism, but could be a good game with a little bit more rounding-off of sharp edges, if not necessarily polish. The roughness was an appealing quirk to the game, but it would be great if it was fully functional.

Dark Black by Purplescape 2013-04-30T17:03:00

Quite fun! Sometimes the order in which you had to do things wasn't always clear, but it's an adventure game, so I can't be too much of a stickler. Music was decent; it fit the mood, but got a little on my nerves at the end. Also, much of the time I couldn't tell what an item was. It wasn't until the end of the game that I figured out that the red lump was a minimalizer gun.

A Man from the Docks by TheDanielBerry 2013-05-02T02:25:00

The music was very annoying. The collisions felt 'sticky.' The second boss was cool, but the first one was pretty boring. I would have liked some indication that I was damaging the second boss, though. I wasn't sure if what I was doing was right, and then suddenly it said 'You win!' and I was like 'Okay...'

RGBA by RetroEpic 2013-05-03T14:46:00

Nicely done! The graphics were very nice, and things ran pretty smoothly. The only qualms I have is that there was no nice front end, no 'You Win!' screen, and occasionally it wouldn't fire even when I was holding down the fire button.

Destroy the Unnecessary by monosaccharide 2013-05-01T00:12:00

Not bad, not bad at all. Got a little stale - you didn't really have to approach each puzzle in a new way, just move around until you got it. The punching sound needs to be a little less jarring - I literally jumped the first time I heard it.

Ten Shades of Grey by Nancybeast 2013-04-30T16:45:00

Windows link isn't working, either.

Minimal Race by daniel2357 2013-04-30T16:05:00

I'm going to agree with Destroyer40k - fuel needs to be a little more guaranteed. In addition, I'm not sure what purpose the 'boost' mechanic serves. All I saw it do was make my fuel go down faster.

Root Route! by netpro2k 2013-04-30T04:37:00

Great game. Fits the theme, has a unique concept. Could do with more vertical visual space. My solution to many of the puzzles was "go as far down as you can and then die so you can see the whole level and plan a route". It was nearly impossible to solve the puzzles reactionarily, especially with the lack of a visible large-scale grid.

Survival Shape by guardiancs 2013-04-30T16:18:00

It's a good start. As others have stated, it could be made more difficult - having the circles require more than one shot would help. The difficulty could also scale up a bit faster.

Shape of magic by Back to Browse Entries 2013-05-03T17:42:00

It's not a game. Literally the only thing I had to do on every level was hold W, A, Up, and Right and I would win every time. This could be cool if it was used as a mechanic instead of the whole game.

Captain Blowhole by EatYourBeef_Doug 2013-04-30T03:56:00

Good prototype. I would guess that the intention is to limit use of the guns eventually - Using the Terry Crews was basically an instant win. The graphics were good and the mechanics were well behaved, although it was difficult to tell what defined an asteroid as "smashed". The subtle asteroid gravity was a pleasant surprise as well.

Potate For Your Life! by ps3master72 2013-05-01T00:34:00

I found the audio a tad grating, and there needed to be more content, but what you had ran quite smoothly! A hitpoints indicator would have been nice to have, though.

Square Circle Triangle by my.digital.decay 2013-05-04T02:41:00

Hmm... Well, the graphics are nice. Continue developing this - I'd like to see where you go with it.

Hit The Button by IHateATMFees 2013-04-30T05:55:00

Unfortunately, this game doesn't really feel like a game. It's just a thing that you click. After waiting for a few seconds and losing coins for the first time, near-instant clicks following also resulted in negatives. Waiting again fixed it. Doesn't particularly feel like it fits the theme - minimalism is the stripping out of non-essential elements, and this was stripping out all elements save for user activity and progression. If I felt like the game was a satire or something and could laugh along with it then maybe I could deal with it better, but at the moment it wasn't at any time actually fun.

Blind by miotatsu 2013-05-04T03:00:00

Interesting. I like the concept. Difficulty curve was steep - a little too steep for me. Aside from that, the only thing I had trouble with was figuring out how to rate this game for 'graphics.'

Parabox by Jon Fischer 2013-04-30T05:33:00

Pretty fun. Very simple, fits the theme well, though the mechanic wasn't terribly unique. Very pretty, and the song was nice. I don't exactly know the limits and abilities of Blender's interactive mode, but I would maybe advise moving to a framework with better built-in physics handling next time, so you can spend more time on what makes the game unique. If you're already a blender modeler, you may find that it plays nicely with Unity, which is a pretty solid framework.

Broken Sat-Nav, 3:12AM, 3013 by df2013 2013-04-30T04:45:00

Often would move around the screen just because I was worried about having objects appear underneath my character. Liked the visual indication of speed and location and direction and whatnot. A fun little game, if not very deep or complex.

Simplyfy by comfycouchstudio 2013-04-30T04:29:00

Well, I told myself around try #40 that I would go to 100, and did just that, not succeeding once. If you want to track the distributions of deaths, I will post it on my twitch channel by tomorrow (/zxprogramming). The thing about extremely difficult games is that they require an eventual reward - I did not get one from this. This game felt less "difficult" than it was "unforgiving". Too often I would "trip" on some ground spikes as I jumped over them, with no obvious visual contact, or land too close behind one of the circles. Also, while aerial control is not physically realistic, it is nearly essential in a motion-heavy game. Basically, whenever I entered the air I was gambling with my life, and felt that I had very little control over where I would end up, no matter how I took off. With tighter controls and shorter levels (or, like, save points? Then you could make us run all of the challenges.), it could be pretty good. At the moment, however, for me it is simply just painful.

Mini Hero by sharbelfs 2013-05-04T02:51:00

Very nicely polished. I wish the sound effects meshed more with the music. Also, I was never sure what constituted as a 'solution.' Sometimes, things wouldn't be filled in and it would work. Others, you had to fill in the whole thing. I would make with winning condition a little more clear.

Essense by Jorjon 2013-05-03T07:17:00

Really good. Video games have their blockbuster movies, their novels, their short story, the rare bit of poetry, so this was... what, a conversation with my therapist and/or motivational speaker? I don't know. Anyway, you definitely hit the feeling you were going for. It fits the minimalism theme to a T, and nonetheless manages to be pretty anyway. Good Job.

Web of Despair by J0hnjwj 2013-05-01T00:30:00

Great effort, but you needed more time. :/ I didn't really get the story... If you decide to continue with this, consider adding a webbing mechanic so you can 'trap' the humans.

Wither by Skoggy 2013-04-30T16:42:00

This is quite good. I loved the mood and the audio. The levels were a tad inconsistent - some were far too easy, and others seemed to drag on and on, and on those, dying was really frustrating.

Lack of Civilization by V0ID 2013-05-02T14:40:00

Well, done, for what you have. The graphics, while not AAA material (though I'm not sure that's what you should be striving for :P) served the game well. Music was nice and not obtrusive. You fit the theme pretty well - it was a little anti-climactic and short, though. Also, jumping was a tad weird.

there was a knock by Thanat0s 2013-05-01T00:39:00

Audio was kind of annoying, and I couldn't get to things fast enough. Interesting gameplay, but it couldn't hold my attention for long.

LD28 — You Only Get One

Let it snow by Thorig 2013-12-21T07:59:00

I really like the idea - make it snow, manually! Could have used a bit more structure than just a once-off simulation.

A Snowball's Chance In Space by barkergames 2013-12-21T07:25:00

Couldn't figure it out originally based on ship design - I assumed I would be shooting some specific feature of the ship: into the docking bay, engines, etc., but a comment's suggestion made it not terribly difficult. I liked how the cycles of the weapon sounds were a simple multiple at eachother, making kind of a beat out of the sounds.

One-legged man by longloaf 2013-12-21T08:06:00

The black skeleton was really difficult - up to that point, it had been about preplanning your motions pretty meticulously, but once that was replaced with a challenge of reaction time with so much delay on the controls, the difficulty curve turned vertical. Cool concept - the controls definitely make you feel physically disabled.

BlockDodger by Jishenaz 2013-12-21T08:28:00

Definitely very simple, as you said. I think it could have done with some kind of scorekeeping or difficulty curve. Way to go finishing something, though. Good to hear you came up with a basic engine, although generally I would work on engines outside of LD and then during LD either use something I'd already made or someone else's engine (Unity, Game Maker, Flixel, Flashpunk, etc.)

LD33 — You are the Monster

Primer by alvivar 2015-08-26T04:55:00

Fun little movement mechanic. Reminds me of 2DCube's Focus, which I had to search for extensively to remember the name of. Interested to see where this goes!

Welcome to Cronenburg by Galan 2015-08-26T02:55:00

Sound effects: Approved. Model scaling: Approved. Laptop performance after kicking down an entire house worth of fences: 4FPStars out of 5. Wasn't terribly clear on how well I was accomplishing the goal - the only end-state seems to be time out to high score. I can envision a slow progression - as the bunny gets more monstrous, the destructive power ramps, until not simply hedges can be defeated, but entire houses, in a Katamari-like escalation to the final end-boss-like kickable: a mailbox.

The Terror of the Night of Day by bowlercaptain 2015-08-28T03:18:00

Sorry! Something got messed up with Cloud Build. Actually, The version it links to didn't even exist when I submitted, so something must have changed. Should be fixed now.

Delivery! by the31 2015-08-26T03:51:00

First run: Swung into parallel park like a some variety of boss, was unable to escape my new three-walled prison. Second run: Hit a hill sideways and swung around the half-bowl like it was Sonic Adventure. Accomplished my goal in my third shot at the facility after remembering that the handbrake was a thing, but otherwise found my best moments hitting terrain corners at full speed and landing straight up through luck of non-figurative dice roll. This is pretty much the best possible 9-hour game: major emphasis on emergent fun through controls, exactly the right tone and level of story to convey that you definitely cared in spite of lack of time. 10/10 would careen sideways again.

Monsta Stelth Gem by Alan Masimba Walker 2015-08-26T05:03:00

Cool! Moderately difficult, but insanely punishing. I'm not sure if my kill persisted, but I was loathe to take the time to figure it out. Checkpoints would be hugely welcome. But: art is good, game works great, view-casting is crazy good. I don't tend to have enough patience to make progress in stealth games, but I like it!

Loveless : a multiplayer story by Mark Venturelli 2015-08-26T03:19:00

Grand. Production values out of this world by Jam standards. Did feel a little cooped up in the one background for all of the middle-period dialogue, but definitely felt involved.

I was sorely grieving the lack of a "pay attention to the damn engineer like someone who isn't a total idiot" option anywhere besides perhaps the end, but I have that gripe with many a tragic tale. I'm excited to hear how it turns out.

Vampire Legacy by Tosic 2015-08-26T05:28:00

Yay! Fishsticks! I do appreciate the "Do not start" button. I'm pretty sure I would hang out with a guy who would put a "do not start" button in his game: I'm pretty sure /I/ would like to put a "Do Not Start" button in my game. The delay-on-click at the title screen was a bit confusing, and I wasn't exactly certain what I was doing when biting the guy, but good job! Twelve hours total is a whole lot of not-time to get anything up and running.

Kaiju Boxing - a game in Twitch chat by NickFrushour 2015-08-26T04:24:00

Good fun. Gave me all kinds of Twitch-native-gamedev warm fuzzies.

Where is my Hat? by Bsevers18 2015-08-26T03:35:00

The graphics were adoirible! Audio was nice. Managed a destruction-less run, only to break stuff when I sat down. Couldn't navigate the maze again to make it back to my original spot for a hat party without any chaos. Also, destroyed the entire city. Mwehehe. Way to go!

Detritus by d3garcia 2015-08-26T03:28:00

Srs biznes difficulty on a trackpad. I think the game has an enemy dearth in certain spaces at certain times because all of the astronauts start facing one direction, or so it seems. I may be wrong on that front. Good graphics, if a bit disjointed. Good job!

Eat Free by Team Myopia 2015-08-28T03:10:00

Up arrows suggested I run upwards: There were no skiiers to be found up there, at least that I saw. The idea is sublime, and I commend the finer touches on having skiiers run into trees, but it was remarkably difficult to survive - my high score is 4. Beautiful use of the theme.

The Stars are Watching by Xanderzoo 2015-08-26T04:12:00

"Strafe" is the most fun direction. When I remembered the theme I had an appropriate "Oh god no" moment. When I succumbed to the defense force I did not persist, for the good of ea2th. Did enjoy flying around, love the starfield. Full points for a convenient-to-run Pygame project.

Scabs by bitdecaygames 2015-08-26T05:17:00

Graphics were great! Sounds were amazing! I couldn't help feeling like my cape was more mobile than I was, and getting stunlocked to death standing below the turret lightning was a bit frustrating, but I think that's the most brawler we're going to get in a jam timeframe.

KidsGrace by Polith Games 2015-08-26T03:59:00

Looks great. Wasn't entirely certain until testing that as the game progressed I was hitting the key too slowly instead of having a correct press misread. Interesting to discover that, with FPS-control literacy, I know exactly where "q" and "e" are, but not necessarily which of WASD are WAS and D, respectively. Not in muscle memory, anyway. Not a huge amount of variety, but an interesting challenge nonetheless.

With a Monster Heart by RegisFrey 2015-08-26T04:45:00

At first did not notice tentacles and murdered three crushes and a classmate simultaneously. Got Damian. Tried again and got Matt, then chose to murder all of my classmates. Required high persistence to keep the monster at bay and flirting progress was slow, which made the pursuit a bit tedious at times, but I like the concept.

LD37 — One room

One Room With Ladders in VR by kmausser 2016-12-17T23:56:00

Oh man! I freaking loved this! Flinging yourself from ladder to ladder makes you feel like a crazy acrobat - and missing the grab and falling to your doom reminds you why acrobats are so thoroughly trained. I didn't really understand what I was looking at or why I was getting stopped at strange invisible walls until I realized - I was looking in a mirror! I felt like an ostrich not recognizing itself the first time. I will admit, grabbing the rungs out of the air was prohibitively difficult for me; I was only able to make it to the second ladder a few times and never caught myself on the third. Maybe if the sides were grabbable as well? Anyway. Cool thing! Thanks for making it!

You shall not pass! by Givit Game Studios 2016-12-16T06:50:00

Pretty good! Lost my first round spending all my ammo on an orange guy, which gave me basically nothing in return. Round after that was fun, lasering dudes was fun, and the shotgun sounded great; I noticed it did more damage, but it lacked the spreadshot feature that usually defines shotguns. Once I finally ran out of bullets I still had $10, but not enough to buy anything, and had to wait around while the monsters killed me off. Maybe could use a little more tuning (Art of screenshake; give both your player and your enemies less health), but I like it.

Fracture by andrewjoy 2016-12-16T07:02:00

Cool stuff! I found the last couple of challenges with unpredictable stun-spots pretty tough and not entirely fair, but I get the impression that was intentional. The art style was super pretty!

UPYACH by rodancheg 2016-12-16T06:42:00

Humor: Memes/10. I think? I thoroughly do not understand what is happening. Cool challenge, though, great theme interpretation. Good music; did you make it in the jam? Excellent aesthetics. Non-installer version works perfectly.

Rotate the room! by DOXM 2016-12-17T09:24:00

Rad! Way to go. Pretty cool patient skill game.

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

10HEAD by zimonitrome 2022-10-03T06:51:15Z

Neat, like the new vehicle for a matcher! I can't tell red apart from pink to save my life, though. Crank up the blue in that pink and splash in some green; a little more pastel will really help it pop to the eye.
