@eugenik is there no downloadable file yet?

d-j-o-v-i-c 2022-10-04 08:09

Hey ! Where is the link to play the game pls ? I don't find it :/

eugenik 2022-10-04 09:36

@yoko-san @d-j-o-v-i-c I had to tweak package compression in UE to make sure the build size is in itch.io file size limits. The game is up now!

eugenik 2022-10-04 11:27

It looks engaging but sadly my pc seems not to play :p

I don't know if it's by design but at some point I started in a room that seemed to be infinite on one axis. I followed the room (which was completely empty) until I reached a wall. Behind the wall was a room that seemed infinite on the other axis. I followed that for a while and when I found another wall, there was a corridor behind and a faint green light at the end.

I liked that for a while the illusion of infinity, and the general procedural generation reminded me of the backroom videos. I wanted to see the monster, but was a bit disappointed when I found him, I had to track them as they were stuck in a door way.

eugenik 2022-10-04 12:55

@thebmxeur yes, some rooms are very long and if it happens to not be an office, loot room or pillar room, it will be empty. The labyrinth is generated at start with fixed size, it does not dynamically infinitely regenerate - but a good idea, I could use that. And yeah, the AI probably has a bad capsule size, will have to fix that.

arcticlion 2022-10-04 13:44

Wow well done actually got jumpscared once. Very well made game. Only wish he could teleport maybe to a new position potentially in the direction im running otherwise after youve made it far enough out hes really not a risk. Also wish dying was more of a jumpscare perhaps a short animation/greatly ramp up the volume when he gets super close. Also perhaps multiple creatures chasing you so you have to worry about different directions? The smashing was very satsifying, but also smashing walls to get through was annoying in a good way like stressed me out when 2 swings didnt work and then i was flailing to get it through. It'd be cool to sometimes guess where the player was going to smash and then have the guy appear far down the hallway through the hole they just smashed.

Anyway just some random stream of consiousness. I don't even play thriller games often but this is the 7th game ive tested this jam and whole heartdly my favourite so far. Super well done.

saintchristopher777 2022-10-04 14:31

I got the same graphics driver warning, and the game crashed. Too bad, it looks interesting! (also, I _guess_ I ought to stop being lazy and update my drivers, lol)

otterfaelure 2022-10-04 14:46

Welp I got terrified. I just exited the popup and this shadow person ran in from my right and I nearly threw my laptop. o.o

This game was pretty neat. I liked the idea and even though I'm a *chicken* with horror games, I tried again a few times.

My room for growth comment would go to the point that putting holes in the wall was really 50/50 on if it would let me through our not and that could be frustrating, trying to figure out why my character wouldn't go through this massive hole while knowing that something is chasing me.

Overall though, you spooked me, and I kept playing. Well done. :D

mrhumannn 2022-10-04 15:42

Extremely interesting mechanics of the game with breaking walls, I liked the destructibility and graphics, but the gameplay itself is not much interested. The artificial generation is cool, but sometimes the monster appears too close to your location and you just don't have time to get out. Also, you don't always get to punch such a hole in the wall that the character goes through it completely, and the player's objectives are a little hard to achieve and I don't like horror, so I didn't pass the game, but I had a lot of fun smashing the walls. It was great!

pygargue-pirate 2022-10-04 16:09

I really love the pitch, gameplay and graphics are good too !

nicekot 2022-10-04 16:18

That's some disturbing sound design. When I was breaking stuff my FPS tanked hard and unfortunately made it very hard to meaningfully progress through the level.

However, it was a nice experience. Good job!

huskitch 2022-10-04 16:18

Interesting concept

alexander-salkov 2022-10-04 16:27

Smash and break!

adamphoebe 2022-10-04 16:32

Terrifying experience, great sound work, but it's a bit lacking in gameplay.

Overall, 6/10.

eugenik 2022-10-04 16:36

@adamphoebe thanks! Do you have any tips for making the gameplay more captivating?

adamphoebe 2022-10-04 16:47

@eugenik Maybe give the player a clear goal or an ending state instead of repeating the same loop over and over, difficulty could be increased too

igor-morgun 2022-10-04 16:57

Backrooms game,i like it

lepletier 2022-10-04 17:00

very disturbing, nice concept!

quinn-patrick 2022-10-04 17:17

I played until my willpower ran out, and I only saw the monster once, and only one crate. I played again and I saw more crates, but I never saw the monster at all! I didn't really feel any sense of tension or unease at any point, I was mostly just walking around smashing the crap out of everything with my hammer, which was a blast.

This is a pretty well presented game with an impressive proc gen system, it just needs a much more salient threat.

stupidhobbit 2022-10-04 17:28

Got some kinda lootbox-heaven: OV-EmuT1itY.jpg Atmosphere is nice, level generation seems nice too. Game was lagging at the beginning, guess it's some kinda Unreal's issue.

selkieharbour 2022-10-04 18:01

The game had a low framerate and couldn't find any resources except the ones at the beginning. Really liked the usage of the destruction of the environment to escape the creepy guy-thing, and the audio worked well. It was really scary, we were playing it together and we both screamed when we got caught. Nice work on the mood!

sayurinyooko 2022-10-04 18:13

Yeah, this game is scary! I didn't even know that here would be any monster, I was so spooked! It's wonderful wallbreaker but sometimes the game is lagging when I destroyed too much things. Thank you for the game!

nenechico 2022-10-04 18:26

I have to wait a long time with the blackscreen but after it's ok, nice strange ambiance but I didn't catch the 10s effects the monster never found me. I finnaly search for it and died touching a black men

khullag 2022-10-04 18:30

interesting concept, but game crashes for me after 2nd or 3rd broken wall with our of video memory error. i have 1060 with 6GB so it should be plenty. unfortunate :(

thorpalsson 2022-10-04 18:44

Very cool idea for a game, it does suffer from performance issues when breaking the walls, also managed to get the AI stuck which was great until I also got stuck in a wall and ran out of willpower. Still a great entry and great job creating that in such a short amount of time!

nick-gozak 2022-10-04 18:58

It may be a darn scary game. I really like the sounds in the game. This lamp Noize is really something special) But other sounds are good too.

Also, the destruction system is something out of Battlefield) Really good job here as well.

The game can generate really fun situations. I spent 5 minutes walking near the wall in the infinite room knowing that the Shadow is on the other side of it moaning)

But it lacks some guidelines to the exit. I know it's a labyrinth, but as a Player, I don't know where to go at all. There are no pointers and I don't know how much time I have to spend to find an exit on one level.

neojeb3748963 2022-10-04 19:17

This was pretty fun!

eugenik 2022-10-04 19:25

The feedback I got so far: - some rooms seem infinite and empty - the monster now is underwhelming and not much of a threat - monster can get stuck, also it should teleport to the player as it can be outrunned eventually, leaving the player just to wander around. Add 2 navmesh resolutions. - Players get jumpscared - Smashing is satisfying - Sound design is disturbing + lamp noise + spooky monster howling - Overall experience terrifying - Gameplay weak - added stress of not being able to get through the hole in the wall is good, but could work better (probably pieces colliding with player), can be frustrating now. Add secondary collider. - game crashes on weaker PCs + low FPS - wall breaking can deplete memory even on 1060 6GB - specify clearer goal and don't repeat the same gameplay loop - lacking guidelines to the exit, sense of progression - the exit should be more visible - chaos needs optimizing for weaker PCs - labyrinth generator needs optimizing for low RAM PCs - static level with handcrafted design would be better than randomly generated enviro - The game is a nice combination of Teardown and the horror genre - Different approach to Backrooms is appreciated - unclear when items are picked up. Add outline, proper sound and B1 anim - lootboxes sometimes spawn inside pillar geometry - some poeple don't notice the controls manual, don't know they can run - make a DS/SMB tutorial. - if some attribute changes, a highlight would be nice. Add DS-like attribute indicator (e.g. HP change) - fix the proximity check - the monster needs to directly see the player. Now it can kill you by being close behind the wall. - sounds need to be animation based in the fullver - add something like a god mode for people who just want to walk around the backrooms and explore, without managing willpower - hit detection: hammer sometimes doesn't hit the lootbox - add ability to defend yourself - dynamic supply feed - endless maze is like a nightmare - great sound design - Shining association just from the thumbnail - player assumes horror game - coffee collectibles are cool - the tutorial is overwhleming a bit - not sure if you can attack the monster from the tutorial - when spawned in loot room, and the monster is not coming, players can get confused and think its a bug - hearing the monster is very creepy, it makes very spooky sounds - fullscreen makes it more scary/immersive - add ability to walk over small remains of wall below - 2 colliders - hints where the exit could be - the bad wall colliders increase hectic moments, heart pounding - balance the gameplay, now can be very frustrating - huge levels, can get lost, no sense of direction, but you are one hit kill. So either smaller levels or bloody direction pointers - monster sound is haunting, can stay in player's head - juxtaposition of dark corridors and bright rooms is great for horror - less flashlight life would be atmospheric

If you have any more feedback like this, I welcome it.

erikengineengineer 2022-10-04 19:58

I had performance issues when breaking anything

Nice jumpscares, nice gameplay and very cool soundeffects! Nice work for this timespan! Yeah and I didn't really notice the theme

msplanlos 2022-10-04 20:04

I looove everything horror realted, but sadly the game did not even start and just crashed my PC. :( From the screenshots of the game it looks amazing (and scary) tho!

eugenik 2022-10-04 20:31

@erikengineengineer @msplanlos What PC specs do you have?

erikengineengineer 2022-10-04 20:34

@eugenik ryzen 5000 series 16 gig ram and rtx3060

dokan 2022-10-04 20:34

A cool approach on the backrooms concept. Destroying objects looks great but lags massively :D

msplanlos 2022-10-04 20:44

@eugenik RTX 3060, Ryzen 7 5800X, 16GB RAM

woahitsjeff 2022-10-04 21:37

This is a solid entry. It a different approach to backrooms and I enjoyed it. My only problem was the destruction of walls was sometimes very unforgiving and made it impossible to crouch through the hole. Thanks for sharing!

kuboxxxxx 2022-10-04 23:04

As soon as I seen a backroom game I couldn't stop myself and had to check it out! I really like that approach on the topic cause it's unique to all other games from this theme so far. There was bugs that other mentioned alredy but it didn't take away the fun!

shogeku 2022-10-04 23:49

Spoopy game. The room break & escaping was fun. Some thoughts: It was difficult to jump through the broken walls i didn't know when i had picked up items (add sound?) Does the flashlight do anything other than make it easy to see?

Nice job, I liked the idea

isaac-hisey 2022-10-05 00:42

I will reserve my review my PC seems to have trouble running and I don't think it would be far to judge from my experience. Very long boot time. Low FPS. I believe my memory to be the bottleneck.

cpu.PNGgfx.PNGmem.PNG

thedashdude 2022-10-05 02:34

The howling was cool, and I beat it once, but the second time it seemed like I outran the monster too much, and I just wandered around looking for the door and couldn't find it. Could do with more consistent games. Nice work.

paul-avallone 2022-10-05 03:34

Spooky atmosphere especially with the sound design. Procedural generation is cool although I did have one loot box spawn half inside a pillar. Also sometimes audio sounds glitched and played twice. It's fun to break through walls. I only felt like I was in danger early on. If you keep moving you will never encounter the monster. I got lost and and gave up trying to find the end. Had a fun time playing. Good job.

dreamerflow 2022-10-05 06:38

So that was scary, oh menn, the scream souns is to much for me lol, nice graphics and mechanics, nice mood (to spooky in my taste), i can“t reach the door yet, Im going to play some more, I enjoy it, great job!

hellsquirrel 2022-10-05 08:15

An interesting combination of Teardown-like game destruction mechanics and horror elements. Imho, hand-designing the levels with added points of interest would have added depth, and you could have generated more game situations in a smaller space. It also seemed like the timer starts when you start the project right away, which doesn't give the player time to read the rules, but I could be wrong. Either way, a lot of effort was expended in a short amount of time, good job!

linktail 2022-10-05 08:49

It was scary, especially when I swing the hammer and the game lost frames.

lorwon 2022-10-05 09:56

Hi, I do not know why but the game is stuck on a black screen I am not able to run it :( I have An intel CPU and an nvidia GPU. I'll try to run it again later to give you a comment and rate your game !

eugenik 2022-10-05 10:08

@lorwon how much RAM do you have? Recently I found the labyrinth generator at the start of the game takes around 16 gigs.

narudgi 2022-10-05 10:13

BackroomsGenerator-Win64-Shipping_etW1qSNjos.png

Thank you! Was fun breaking walls

lorwon 2022-10-05 10:50

@eugenik I only have 8 gigs of ram.

ugly-robot 2022-10-05 14:41

This is such a powerful and well made experience! As someone who has liked the 'backrooms' for a while (just as cool, community-driven internet storytelling) - this one of my new favorite pieces of media. To actually hear the florescent hum, the walk yellow stained carpet - a dream come true! Also - bringing a sledgehammer is like the ultimate horror fantasy! With backrooms especially - the tradeoff of running swiftly for the 'known' corridor you can see, versus slowly bashing your way through to a new, potentially safer (or more dangerous) area - it creates a wonderful high-tension decision. This game is perfectly rendered - not 'beautiful' persay, but it captures the haunting emptiness, the ambiance of a forgotten space, and the terror of unknown shouting , and the lonely confusion of running away. There was a wonderful moment, where I heard the creature approach, and took off darting down different corridors. Them, finally feeling safe, I rounded a corner to see a broken wall! I had been here before - which mean's the creature must not be far away! Then I heard his shout! A perfect moment. I got a text message just after it and nearly jumped out of my socks!

I did eventually run out of willpower (which I was fine with - I want to see what happens when I got caught!) - but the creature never did seem to find me. A little extra polish on the UI, AI, and gameplay - and this could be a fan-favorite. If you have not yet shared this elsewhere in the internet-horror-storywriting community, you totally should!

All in all - you should be very proud - Although you did not have a huge team nor tons of time - I can tell already that this game is going to be memorable for me.

eugenik 2022-10-05 14:51

@ugly-robot thank you very much! <3 glad you enjoyed the experience as much as you did

william-baker 2022-10-05 17:27

really interesting!

wizcas 2022-10-05 18:07

Oh the game is way too scary to me. The atmosphere is incredible, reminding me of SCP series. I'm not sure if I ran into a bug but the monster never shows up. Great work. I'll pee on my bed tonight. :joy:

jmad 2022-10-05 19:38

- I like breaking walls too. - Simple to pickup, intuitive controls. - Sound design and monster approach are manageable, even for people hating jumpscares - It just works. - 10/10 would swing mallet again.

Edit : AND I ESCAPED, YESSS!

denvil 2022-10-05 20:47

Nice take on the Backrooms. Monster was little underwhelming due not finding me on few times. I think it got stuck in wall after chasing me for while in corridor. I did not get the 10 seconds theme (I know it is there from description), adding some kind of indicator of changes would help to tie with theme.

ismael-rodriguez 2022-10-05 22:12

Very interesting concept with the monster chasing your through a destructible environments. It's pretty creepy to see it chasing you. Good job!

beefsock 2022-10-06 16:31

Nice backrooms implementation and procedural generation. Wall smash physics are nice. Enjoyed it!

motti 2022-10-06 17:47

good innovation, I would like if the game didn't need so much resources to run, but overall I love the new concept you made! check out my jam game

hagamosvideojuegos 2022-10-07 09:06

Amazing 3d feeling for a jam.

Have a good control too, maybe a little hard near to the boxes.

About the jam theme it's ok and get a good (and scary) experience.

Good work!

coolgunxdd 2022-10-07 17:43

I like break everything in my sight but i am not a big fan of scary game! it is a good and solid entry! Good work

retrisma 2022-10-07 22:52

It didn't run on my computer- on integrated Intel GC. It didn't support my driver.

ex3d0 2022-10-08 08:48

Interesting concept but unfortunately game doesn't want to run on my mid-range PC (just shows a black screen).

Ryzen 5 2400G, RX 570 and 16 GB of RAM

trassh 2022-10-09 11:52

Usually i am not a big fan of horror games but it was still fun! Really innovative concept and overall great work!

dzejpi 2022-10-09 12:44

Really impressive what is possible to accomplish in Unreal in such short amount of time. Visuals were on point and endless maze was really like from some nightmare. Visuals were maybe a little bit too good - game was pretty choppy on my GTX 960, but it's pretty old now and I should definitely upgrade. :) Otherwise, very good sounds! Too bad you can't fight the monster. I mean, you have the hammer. Running out of willpower was kinda funny though, was a real "Guess I'll die now" moment. Either way, very good entry and I think you should continue working on it after the jam ends, I think you really have something great here!

enderswype 2022-10-10 14:36

i didnt play much but it's a nice game overall, interesting sound design ahash

cdmaniac 2022-10-10 20:55

I liked the idea, but the procedural aspect sometimes let me wander around without to have to break walls (I did it nonetheless, for the pleasure of BREAKING THINGS). Once I started to have a comfortable amount of willpower and energy for the flashlight, I tried to actively find the monster, who found me really late, and have not be able to see it? Overall, the sound design is definitely the greatest success of this game. An original game! GG

ehon 2022-10-11 17:13

I wanted to make a procedurally generated game for a jam for a long time so I always get interested in games like that. Also, I love the concept of backrooms, so it was obvious I'd play this one :D I think most of the feedback was written above, I don't really have anything to add besides: great work, keep it up! It was a cool game :D Also it's nice to see UE5 being used on game jams.

erkberg 2022-10-12 07:02

Good and very frightening game! And it was awesome welcoming you to the stream yesterday! Here's the VOD if you want to check that out again: https://youtu.be/x8_8yrtjEcU

fort 2022-10-16 12:41

its cool

dzolkin 2022-10-17 21:26

It's great that you combined the main theme with the backstage theme

oliver-richmeier 2022-10-18 23:09

Funny concept! Game is pretty interesting although somewhat lacking in polish, I never found any loot boxes except the one at the start and broken walls are sometimes very difficult to move through. The graphics and sound design are good, it definitely functions as a unique horror experience.

sarah 2022-10-20 04:18

It's very spooky and I don't really like scary things so it was hard to get anywhere haha. Well done though!

evgenimp 2022-10-20 19:19

The movement could be more polished but otherwise very nice!
