Almost broke my keyboard smashing jump! Really sticky jump tuning.

bingtheping 2022-04-04 14:36

Very fun! Found myself replaying it multiple times, I enjoyed it a lot!

guardaro 2022-04-04 14:38

Great concept! I enjoy that it shows both the observer's time and the adjusted time. A bit philosophical?

The controls got a bit annoying; I had a lot more trouble doing precision platforming than it felt like I should have. Still a good time, though, and a well-done entry.

asmadigames 2022-04-04 14:40

The jump controls are a bit rough and the precision needed is high! Gets somewhat frustrating trying to do lots of little jumps. Challenging, but a bit more due to not being able to make jumps than difficulty. Neat idea with time dilation though!

rickylee 2022-04-04 15:01

I can't for the life of me beat level 14 :') I absolutely love the pitch changing and pulse scaling great job. I'll be coming back to beat this after ludum.

tiny-pig 2022-04-04 16:57

Not too sure what dilating time is or what collecting shoes does. It seems like it speeds up the player and increases the amount of time you have. Regardless, the music and level design were really good. The colours were also well picked and fit the art style.

milq 2022-04-04 17:35

@psytron, @guardaro, @asmadigames, sorry! I forgot fix the Lerp acceleration of Delta! Now it is fixed! Thanks for your feedback!

@bingtheping, @mook, @tiny-pig, thanks for your words!

chusmimax 2022-04-05 00:05

Controls feels tight and the idea is pretty neat. The fixed Lerp acceleration really shows its true potential.

It really makes you think how this idea could be expanded in a bigger scope project.

jcg 2022-04-05 15:37

Love the unique use of time! My first time though; didn't make it to my loved one in time :'(

Would like to see jumping also affect the time dilation!

milq 2022-04-05 15:47

@jcg, thank you very much for your feedback! The truth is that I thought about it but it didn't have time and I saw hard to implement before deadline. Thanks again! :-)

papaya 2022-04-05 15:53

Cool game. The controls are smooth and responsive, yet challenging once your speed goes up.

luis-priego-cuenca 2022-04-05 17:16

Me encantó.

farzher 2022-04-06 02:00

the audio was fun. story was neat too. turns out my loved one died while i was zooming around at the speed of light. oops

proxy-games 2022-04-06 02:16

This was a simple but effective game. The controls themselves are simple, but the gameplay is expanded by having to collect keys and being able to grab boots that dilate time. The graphics are simple but cohesive, and the sound effects work nicely. The music is simple, and I was originally unimpressed, until I realized that the pitch of the music was going down over time due to the time dilation, which was a very nice touch.

I didn't manage to get to my loved one in time, but I got to hang out with her corpse for 10 seconds before I died, too, so that's pretty cool I guess. Good game, overall.

okamit 2022-04-06 02:22

A bit hard to precisely jump as you move quite fast, but other than that, a solid game with a great theme! I really love the concept of having time dilation in the game, would be interesting to expand upon even more!

Good job!

mopifish 2022-04-06 03:07

Cheeky little platformer, I didn't have any issues with jumping after I got used to it though I admit it was a little tricky at times. I didn't really see how the time dilation fit into the game? Maybe it had to do with the faster youre going the slower time is? But a lot of levels involved you stopping and changing directions, so it didn't really work that way

good entry :)

s1lv3r-dr4g0n-games 2022-04-06 03:52

Seconding what folks have already said, moving felt good but the precision jumping got a bit frustrating. Very good job though.

hajpappan 2022-04-06 06:48

I agree with what most folks have said: overall great and responsive movement, a bit hard to land precise jumps. Overall a simple and very clean game idea that is communicated and executed very well. Great job!

josep93 2022-04-06 17:36

Amazing idea and implementation!!!.

clemonades 2022-04-07 23:11

This was a lot of fun! It took just a bit to get use to the controls, but by my second attempt they felt crisp and responsive (game just has a learning curve). I'm very impressed with the level of polish, especially in a compo! Great job!

milq 2022-04-08 14:31

Thank you so much for your feedback, @okamit! I have corrected the jump because the Jump Buffering did not work. Furthermore, I've seen your profile picture and I've seen that you are one of the members of Blackout! I've to tell you I played it months ago and I loved it, in fact, I teach it to my students about how you can make good games in Godot. Thank you a lot!

thegamer 2022-04-08 17:01

Really sad story, but very impressive game. To delay the death of the player himself, but unable to delay the death of his loved one. That's a very good idea. And the property of dilation implemented into the game is just... hurting my physics XD. Overall, it's a great game. I like the background music changes, I like the difficulty of the game, and it's an impressive for a compo. Great job!

amolker 2022-04-08 17:12

Good game, nice use of the theme! With 432 8132 351 attempts, I finally made it on time!

123.png

flenzil 2022-04-08 17:22

Like the theme! A bit hard to control but kind of adds to the tension of it. Always like games that mess around with time!

nardandas 2022-04-08 18:30

Well-done precision platformer, though the time mechanics kind of feel at odds with the rest of the stuff. I did find the acceleration faster than the deceleration, which made the movement feel kind of snappy-yet-floaty in a difficult way. Anyway, I didn't really understand why I'd want to dilate time if it meant my loved one's time didn't slow down. Just kind of a thematic nitpick. I guess also the physics are not *quite* right, with the time at the bottom *really* being your loved one's view of your clock, and not your view of your clock, but I can let that slide!

milq 2022-04-08 23:42

@nardandas, it's okay! You're the first to tell me that didn't get it. The bottom time is the time of Delta, the protagonist, which dilates over time with respect to the time of the observer (loved one who waits for you in repose) whose time is on the top left. It is true that physics fails a bit, it is still a game that seeks spectacularity and good mechanics. Regarding acceleration and deceleration it's the same since I only use a linear interpolation (the LERP function) for both. If there is something you don't understand, tell me, please! Thanks for your feedback!

milq 2022-04-09 00:07

@chusmimax I would love to do it in a bigger project but I don't have as much support as your game on that idea hehe. Of course if I had it I would. By the way, your game is spectacular and everyone tells you the same thing, that you have to make it bigger.

@papaya, thanks for your feedback! Yes, the truth is that I added the fixes to the controls, were you able to save your loved one?

@luis-priego-cuenca, thank you very much, Luis! Let's see if we meet and have a few beers together and tell each other!

@farzher, thank you so much for playing the game! With a couple of attempts you will surely save your loved one, above you have a video of how I do it.

@proxy-games, thank you very much for your feedback! It has been detailed, direct, sincere and with respect. I appreciate it a lot. I hope you can play again and save your loved one, above you have a video of how I do it. Thank you very much again!

milq 2022-04-09 01:28

Thank you so much, @amolker! I'm so glad someone managed to save their loved one in my game. Seriously thanks!

ulisses 2022-04-09 03:45

wow, what an amazing game! The mechanics reminded me a bit of super meat boy, if it was an inspiration it was very well adapted! I loved the sound design, the jumping sounds are really good. The controls are responsive, but at one point I couldn't move forward because I couldn't calculate the distance needed. The level design impressed me, it presented a lot of variation. Congratulations, it was really good!

cakts 2022-04-09 07:13

Genuinely impressed with how long I played this for once I understood the mechanics, easily one of the funniest games I've played this jam. Music and audio was good and the graphics gave me some old flash game nostalgia. Platformer mechanics worked great, game was almost philosophical haha. Really awesome work, one of the best (and most unassuming) games I've played this jam. Great work!

dilatethetime.png I'm getting there, just wait for me. This isn't even my final score

milq 2022-04-09 18:12

@chusmimax, WOW, thanks for complete the game with all the challenges, it's a great honor, really.

tygrak 2022-04-09 18:46

Interesting twist added to a platformer. Sadly I didn't manage to spend time with my loved one, nor to collect all the coins, because I missed one while I was "hurrying" at the end :D. Fun game! Good job making it.

milq 2022-04-09 18:51

@tygrak, thanks for playing! Could you obtain the ten coins and save your loved one? ;-)

jackaljk 2022-04-09 18:57

Really neat idea, I love relativity so I particuarly appreciate the concept! Would have loved even more if the time dilation was more intrinsic to the game mechanics and if length contraction had a role too. Anyway the game is fun as it is and the audio component is amazing, although the controls feel a bit too tight. Nice job!

steve7411 2022-04-09 20:49

I like the level design. The controls made it a bit hard for me to stop exactly where I wanted to for smaller platforms. Overall, a really fun experience.

bluishgreenpro 2022-04-10 00:31

Those small platforms are always the bane of my existence, but other than that the levels were fine. Certainly encourages you to try and improve your time via repeat play-throughs.

radmccool 2022-04-10 10:37

never got time to spend with my lover. :( i got really close and it hurt not making it and i rage quit after. really fun platformer that is really difficult, though a lot of the difficulty is just controlling the character. though i think the aesthetic sells this as part of the design so doesnt feel unfair or limiting to me when playing

frozenfire92 2022-04-10 19:06

A great compo entry! I was able to make it to level 9 after a few attempts, I appreciated you having the video so I could see the end. I found the camera zooming in/out as the reciprocal changed to be very frustrating and hard on the eyes. The controls felt pretty good overall, but sometimes it was too twitchy and I ended up flying off the platform when I barely pressed the key :joy: Overall a good entry, keep on making games \o/

marc-antoine-girard 2022-04-10 19:08

Very cool take on the theme! The equation at the beginning made me feel like a math genius. I was like "Oh so I just have to dilate time, easy peasy". I played a bunch of time until I finally made it to the end, and to my surprise, there was a story there :O Great entry, good job!

brandon-js-lea 2022-04-10 22:11

Not sure if it's just me but I had no idea what was going on. You could have removed the time dilation mechanic and I wouldn't have noticed the difference. Like, I get that as you go, the time difference between the person you're trying to save and you changes, but I don't see how that relates to my actions as a player at all. Am I missing something?

milq 2022-04-10 22:33

@brandon-js-lea, thank you for your feedback. I clarify it:

* The bottom time is your time, which expands more when you move faster. If you manage to finish the game you have the first ending of the game, the easiest. * The time on the top left is the observer at rest, in this case your loved one. If you manage to finish the game before this time you have the second ending of the game, more complicated. * If you get the previous one and the ten coins, you will have managed to overcome the highest difficulty of the game.

Hope I was able to clear that up for you, thanks so much for playing, seriously!

caeonosphere 2022-04-11 01:10

Cool idea! I'm not sure I've ever gone so fast in a platformer before, really tested my reflexes.

ksimaster 2022-04-11 11:37

Nice game! I really liked it! In the beginning there is no WOW, but then the mood is at its maximum!!! Good job! :)

mateusboga 2022-04-11 14:32

Nice game! Thanks for submitting it on stream! Here's the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1452837886

milq 2022-04-11 16:12

@caeonosphere, @ksimaster, thanks for your feedback!

@mateusboga, It's been an honor for you to play my game, and thank you very much for the VOD, really!

nyxkn 2022-04-12 08:43

The game had a really interesting premise, but falls a bit short on delivery. For time-dilation being the main mechanic, there was surprisingly very little running to do. Level 8 is the only one that felt appropriate and actually fun. Everything else felt like a regular platformer with slightly annoying camera every time you move :D Controls were hard to master as well and somewhat frustrating and required a lot of slowing down and precision movements, which definitely gets in the way of trying to experience the time dilation! Overall great concept and implementation, but level design fails to make use of the mechanic in a meaningful way. Also music was actually great and fits really well.

eboatwright 2022-04-12 16:19

Very fun game! I liked the simplistic graphics, although the music got a little bit annoying (not to insult you, I can't write music at all ) And, I couldn't beat level 9, because the player got so fast I wasn't about to land on the tiny platforms

neowhoru 2022-04-12 16:48

really good game - very fast gameplay haha.

ddrkirbyisq 2022-04-13 18:51

Not bad, haha. There's not a ton here but for an LD game it's not bad and at least has an interesting spin on the tried-and-true LD platformer. I'm never a fan of higher inertia in my platformers (Mega Man > Super Meat Boy) but that's just personal preference.

Do the coins result in a different ending screen or is it just for show? Feels like maybe there's an opportunity there with them being pieces to some key for saving your loved one or whatever, which would incentivize another go at trying a 100% run. (??)

milq 2022-04-13 19:20

@ddrkirbyisq, wow! It's a great honor to receive feedback from you!

I try to clarify it:

* The bottom time is your time, which expands more when you move faster. If you manage to finish the game you have the first ending of the game, the easiest. * The time on the top left is the observer at rest, in this case your loved one. If you manage to finish the game before this time you have the second ending of the game, more complicated. * If you get the previous one and the ten coins, you will have managed to overcome the highest difficulty of the game. The ending is the same as before. It is a collectible.

Hope I was able to clear that up for you, thanks so much for playing, seriously!

And yes, I like fast accelerations like in Megaman but it is true that when the character goes very fast you have to accelerate more slowly. I have used LERP and maybe I should have made it exponential. I'll have to change and test it more! Thanks again!

ddrkirbyisq 2022-04-13 19:59

Oh, yeah, I understood the dilation mechanic, I just wasn't sure if the collectibles actually did anything (yet?), yeah. That makes sense.

Yeah there are many ways to do platformer movement; typically in my games there simply isn't any inertia so movement stops immediately upon releasing the direction. I feel like this was maybe an issue in some of the later levels here where small movements were encouraged by the level design but were difficult to execute effectively because the velocity carries over between frames.

Then again, if that's intended as part of the level design, maybe that's okay too. (i.e. "use walls and other parts of the level to adjust your position instead of relying on short taps")

rodel77 2022-04-14 17:16

Nice nerdy concept, really liked it!

marianoa213 2022-04-14 23:31

At first, I didn't know I had to collect the coins to get the good ending, but yeah, it's a very original and fun game, the level desing is also very good... 10/10

You should make a sequel if you want ;)

f1krazy 2022-04-15 13:42

I think this game needs a bit more explanation. I didn't understand how the time dilation mechanic worked, specifically, why time was slowed at some points and not at others (from reading the comments above, time is only slowed while you're moving?) I also didn't realise what the difference between the observed time and the regular time was, or what they were counting down to, until all of a sudden I got hit with "Your loved one died!" Wait, I have a loved one? And the goal is to reach them before they die? The game never tells you that beforehand, so it comes out of nowhere.

My main problem with this game, however, is that the platforming is just far too unforgiving. You move too quickly for any kind of precision platforming to be possible, yet the game is *full* of precision platforming. Level 7 in particular destroys my run every single time, because the platforms are tiny and most of them are *just* within the limit of what you can reach, so you either don't quite make it on, or you overshoot and fall off the other side. The furthest I could reach is Level 9, and while I could probably make it further if I gave up on collecting the coins, I doubt I can ever make it to the end, and I'm sorry to say that I'm probably not going to try again anyway, because the platforming is just that frustrating for me.

I'm sorry, I know this is a very negative review. This is a really clever concept for a platformer, and I really wanted to enjoy it, but I just... can't. The movement physics just completely ruin the experience for me.

milq 2022-04-15 14:17

@f1krazy, thank you very much for your feedback.

For this game I don't like to use text to explain the story and I couldn't do it.

I encourage you to try it a few more times because in the end people love the experience of finishing it. I would have liked that you enjoyed it.

milq 2022-04-15 14:30

@f1krazy, @ddrkirbyisq, and obviously I want to improve in all areas and offer a better experience in my next game.

theinkskeleton 2022-04-16 14:03

Oh, this was great! The idea was nice, though I'm not sure if explaining time dilation helped much, but the game was really fun to play! It felt very stressful, but in a good way, though I got pretty angry at some of the levels (but in the end I ended up liking them). The graphics are rather simple, but work quite well, and audio made the experience better. Overall, a really good entry, so congratulations!

skruffye 2022-04-17 15:20

Well, it probably sounds a bit odd considering I finished it first try, but I think the controls here really needed to be tighter. I'm used to playing 2D platformers and I used to speedrun them as a hobby, but for a more casual player, I think the lack of any fine control over the movement would be a bit too much. It would probably be best compared to Super Meat Boy, given the speed at which it's supposed to be played but--even though that game *also* caught some flak for similar reasons, if I'm remembering correctly--even *that* had acceleration in its moveset so you could control the character a bit better when you were standing still. Acceleration would probably play well into your theme of time dilation here, too!

Other than my concerns with the movement, I liked the level design--it was challenging but never obtuse--and I think you implemented your concept really well. The difference in whether you get to spend time with your girlfriend for an observer and for the player was a nice touch!

Graphics could have been better, but honestly, you played into it well with the "cutscenes" so I'm inclined to say it doesn't matter. :stuck_out_tongue: Plus, having the character be a square in a level made of squares was probably the best thing you could have done to ameliorate the issue I already mentioned with the controls, so fair enough!

The music was suitably reminiscent of messing around with waveforms on an oscilloscope in the lab and fit well. I know the pitch shifts when you move because of the time dilation, but is that just a simple shift that you've hardcoded in, or is it a dynamic shift based on the current level of time dilation? If it's the latter, then that's a really nice touch!

Good job overall, I had fun!

milq 2022-04-17 15:48

@skruffye, thank you very much for your comment! Detailed and providing feedback!

Regarding the controls, I added Jump Buffering and Coyote Time. However, I think I should improve the side scrolling. The acceleration is with the LERP function and I think it should have been more exponential so that the character handles better at the beginning of the movement. That is something I will experience later when the voting is over.

And yes! The time dilation formula is applied in the game! I use a constant as a factor for gameplay reasons but I try to follow the formula as closely as possible for time dilation.

The truth is that I'm sad that people did not see all my effort in applying that physics. Perhaps it has not been clearly explained in the game. But yes, your time is dilated with respect to the observer (your loved one). So the faster you go, the slower your time relative to the observer. But since the observer is at rest, the time is what we see normal at the top left. The space also contracts in the game and the sound also expands.

Thanks for looking into those details. I appreciate it a lot!

skruffye 2022-04-17 16:09

@milq Don't worry too much about it--when you put something a bit niche (like mostly realistic time dilation) into your work, not everyone's going to notice, and that's okay! The people who do notice will always appreciate that you put in the time and effort to get it right.

For the more general audience, you've just got to make sure that the game feels as engaging to play as you can make it, even if they don't notice the underlying concept. It sounds like you're planning on looking into doing just that after the voting's done, so keep on doing what you're doing, and best of luck!

robonaut121 2022-04-17 19:50

This was an interesting concept for a game! I didn't manage to make it in time, sadly. I gave up after a few attempts. The controls were surprisingly tight, although the game could have done with jump height control. (I understand that's pretty hard to get implemented in a rush, though.) While speed was key to dilate the time, nearly all platforms became incredibly finicky to land on without overshooting. Maybe reduce the acceleration as you get faster?

This was really enjoyable, especially for your first Ludum Dare game! (And with compo timeframe too!)

chybby 2022-04-20 11:39

This was pretty fun, played it multiple times trying to get to the end with my lover alive. I liked how the music speed changed and the level scaled (even though it didn't change the gameplay too much) The end rush where you get a lot of boots to really up the dilation was cool. I found some of the smaller platforms really tricky with how sensitive the controls were.
