LD54 — Limited Space

Space Piracy 2444 by seurimas 2023-10-08T17:40:46Z

A fun, impressively complete little game.

Quite amazing that you managed to complete this pocket sized space sim for a compo game. Flying around without friction takes getting used to but it feels correct for this type of game. There is tactics to figure out, skills to improve and it feels bigger than it actually is because of all the warping and chasing cargo ships around.

I assume there was more types of encounters/upgrades planned, since currently there is no incentive to go for more than one ship at a time, it's just asking for trouble. But I can imagine it can get improved further, for sure.

I also have weird audio stuttering in the web version and the desktop version just crashes on close, but I don't think either of that is directly your fault xD

Loop Bots by minibobbo 2023-10-02T07:53:54Z

I always had a soft spot for these robot coding games and this one is pretty neat. Simple to pick up and smooth to play. It also reacts pretty fast, unlike many other coding games.

Difficulty ramps up pretty fast but you can pick any level from the get go so it's easy to give all the mechanics a try.

Gnome In The Abyss by Plepletier 2023-10-04T15:59:26Z

Tough as nails, but a good start. It definitely gets across the desperate struggle of gnome survival :p

I feel there are some minor tweaks that would make it more fair.

For example, shaking the pillar a lot stronger when it's about to go down (or some other clear indicator), since cracks are not the most reliable way to tell. I think some pillars spawn with cracks, which makes it more unreliable.

Also, would be nice if new gnomes spawned higher up so you can react to them better. I had them spawn inside me while I was jumping, which isn't the best suprise xD

Forklift Frenzy: Limited Space Edition by denvil 2023-10-04T12:20:14Z

forklift.png

Deceptively addictive.

At first I was a bit confused and sceptical, but as soon as I figured out shop upgrades are very good and how to keep going, I started getting pretty invested.

Feels good to roll around and stack stuff, especially once some upgrades are added.

Aside from getting locked into options menu and shop menu if you haven't finished a request, I would like if delivery was a bit more under my control. I got stuck in last run since I just wasn't getting any greens and everyone kept requesting greens. All I had was stacks of other colors. And by the time I empty the area delivery, the one with greens just disappears and I get 4 reds delivered xD

Space Panic by bog13 2023-10-03T06:18:46Z

A panic induced, fun little run. Figuring out the best way to navigate the place and how to best shoot the rockets is an interesting challenge.

I did have some lag on my machine though, making it more challenging than it needed to be. And I could skip the doors by jumping around them, but that may have been a speedrun tactic.

That survival section at the end was quite an exciting finale.

Purple Pop by silkworm_sweatshop 2023-10-04T16:36:04Z

Very fun to see the population explode, in all the ways xD

It looks and sounds nice and the gameplay is easy to manage. I only wish there was a bit more control in placing the resources. Like, if we got 5 each time and they were smaller. A circle only gets so far when it comes to precision.

One Word Letter by lukbebalduke 2023-10-02T20:38:54Z

A very refreshing type of game to see here :D Has a nice look and atmosphere to it with interesting story developments.

I think the words are still mixed up in the build that's linked, but I figured out which one is which. Not sure what the map button was supposed to do but I had a few glitches when transitioning between areas. Was a smooth ride otherwise.

That bird has a lot of blood on it's hands.

Small Airport by tinor 2023-10-02T16:14:12Z

Fast and simple typing game. Gets pretty tense near the end when plane starts falling xD

Pack It In by adam-gould 2023-10-02T21:31:14Z

Game in true spirit of the theme xD

Very polished and nice to play. It gets pretty challenging at times and I am currently stuck at level 15 but will hopefully figure it out soon.

The variety in the items is nice and it's very satisfying to pack it all in and see the truck go.

Music felt fitting, giving it a mood reminiscent of moving to a different flat.

Pack It In by adam-gould 2023-10-03T05:40:40Z

@adam-gould coming back to the day after I realized that there is no saving or level select so... I am not going back to 15 again xD

Blind Caver by Blueman 2023-10-08T12:36:47Z

A very clever game both in execution and ways to get the most out of limited development resources xD

Levels are fairly simple but explore all the fun combinations of mechanics that have been added. I appreciate they are small enough and you reach end before it gets too much to memorize.

I do think the cave in shouldn't close if you hit a wall/door while on top of it (doesn't get a message either).

There is definitely room to expand this, as many others mentioned, but I quite like it's compact and limited nature.

Gridspace by Joseph Ferrari 2023-10-03T08:43:20Z

A fun turn based shooter. These are rare to see and the way it ties into the theme was not what I expected.

Would be nice to have a restart button instead of needing to reload the page after losing. Some measure of score would be cool too (ships destroyed/turns survived).

I am curious as to what are the turn priorities since they seem sort of simultaneous, but there are times when things happen in order I wouldn't expect. I am sure more playing would shed light on that.

Da 'Lil Patch by viashimo 2023-10-05T08:45:15Z

An intriguing game. Would need more fiddling with it to figure out all interactions.

It is a fun concept, and the interface and the graphics are well put together.

It reminds me of the board game Photosynthesis, with the taller crops shading lower crops and the sun changing direction on a hex grid.

There is a bit of an overwhelming amount of extra variables at play here, though. I feel having access to all the systems at the start is a bit too much, even if it's all nicely labeled and tooltipped. Repeated playthroughs are needed to get in the hang of it, and with the speed of the seasons passing, it's more confusing than rewarding.

Limited Headspace by OadT 2023-10-03T19:25:15Z

Very unique and intriguing. With complex set up like this, it's no wonder there are so many warnings about how fickle it is if wrong buttons are pressed xD

Took a while to get in the hang of things but it went smooth afterwards. Got me a bit emotional in the end too.

It also got me thinking if reality shifts due to memories or it's the other way around? Thought-provoking.

Magical Veggies by zanagi 2023-10-04T13:22:36Z

Very fun and hard to put down :D

Didn't hear of the mellon game but I can now see the influence. I like the witchy take on it. Couldn't reach the pumpkin yet, but I should probably move on to some other games for now.

The merging sound gets a bit too loud when a lot of merges happen at once. Plays all nice and well otherwise.

Flob the Bloing by Branquelo 2023-10-08T08:09:31Z

A nice hard platformer with very solid production values :D

flob.png First attempt took me around 12 minutes and 60 deaths but 2nd run was cake.

Having mostly figure out how the game controls, I got to say I am not a fan of the way momentum works while in the limited spaces. I don't feel enough in control when exiting it due to the crazy speeds one can accumulate vertically. One would expect horizontal movement will also speed up, so it's a bit counter intuitive when it's so unbalanced.

My design instincts are telling me it should completely ignore gravity while in the limited space and you can move freely in all directions, as if it was a top down game, with space bar maybe giving a dash. Maybe you had it as a concept somewhere during development but it got scrapped? I am assuming so since the sprite inside has full 360 rotation that feels like it would swim more than just fiddle with gravity.

It looks and sounds gorgeous though xD

Get rid of the alien! by Jejkobb 2023-10-03T18:40:36Z

A nice slidey puzzle. The presentation is quite pleasant that it almost made me feel sorry for the little guy.

I had some resolution issues as others mentioned but I fixed it by zooming my web page out. Needed to do it through the firefox menu because the game stole the cursor, but it worked xD

Penguin Waddle by Flightless 2023-10-05T08:00:48Z

A nice little game that reminds us how harsh penguin life is xD

It gets tense when we really start running out of space and the penguins keep getting stuck around the map, causing worry an orca will chomp a bunch of them off the edge while I am away getting a new one.

As others said, having a bit more of a telegraph when they are off screen would be nice. Especially when I come to grab a new penguin and it gets gobbled along with me due to it being too close to the edge of the screen.

Compact Compound by Sag05 2023-10-02T18:20:21Z

A simple solid tower defense. The balancing and the aiming priorities could use some tweaking and after playing for a while the enemies start spinning and it turns into a tornado xD They hit extra hard then and game lags up. Couldn't get to the 3000 gun reasonably.

DE-LIMITED by Raivk 2023-10-08T11:11:23Z

An excellent twin stick shooter!

This one deserves way more ratings than it has right now, good grief. The gameplay is very addicting and very smooth. Graphics are clear yet vibrant and the music keeps me pumping while playing.

I didn't figure out how heal works right away but it made the game that much better when I did.

Can't think of much to improve it, except maybe more enemy movement pattern variety other than direct follow. Having something else to do except move and shoot would be nice too, since at this point it may as well be autoshoot. Something like a consumable powerup for example.

EDIT: oyea, my highscore so far delimited.png

Crampy Kitchen by BisnessPirate 2023-10-02T17:59:56Z

Interesting and chaotic. I had some issues picking up ingredients and I kept being unlucky with my shelves filling up with vegetables I don't need, but worked ok otherwise.

Hellbarrel by allenski 2023-10-04T13:40:44Z

hellbarrel.png

Didn't beat the high score but I got pretty close. Maybe if I died a bit less near the end.

It's a very good bullet hell, gives me Devil Daggers vibes (may be intentional?).

Very good pacing and first time here I see limited space taken to literal dozen pixels of motion near the end.

As others mentioned, deaths tend to chain. Would be nice to either clear the screen of bullets on death or give you a temporary shield instead of invulnerability so you can tank a few shots instead of becoming hittable on top of a bullet you paniced into.

The Heap by Profugo Barbatus 2023-10-08T07:27:04Z

A nice concept that can definitely go places :D

I will assume the intended game is the first run game, because after replaying once, simultaneous processing is on at the start and upgrades don't work, seems commands timeout faster too (I may be wrong about the last one though).

I like the design of Malloc and wish she would communicate when we try to do something bad (like more tasks at once, or drop wrong command into the wrong slot). I didn't figure out where the upgrade button was at first either (I expected it's the whole UI there, but it was just the little thing at the top). So in general, a bit more clarity to the UI would be good.

As others mentioned, balance is pretty nuts, starting menagable, transitoning to nothing happening and then getting 8 commands at once. Highest I got was around 600 points and that was a very lucky run. It does feel very satisfying when you manage to clean everything up and wait for the next wave.

Music is pumping too, gotta say xD

Though I Walk by AdamCYounis 2023-10-02T16:33:56Z

Very fun and polished experience. Nice difficulty curve and impressively put together give the development time.

The mood and the graphics are the highlight and it controls pretty smoothly.

My only complaint is the fiddlyness of the edges of the screen at certain levels, but it does help that claustraphobic feeling. Wish there were more levels in tune with the theme like that.

Hexed by Tesseract 2023-10-02T06:27:32Z

Feels like playing a tight Tron race, but turn based.

It's pretty fun, I assume especially so with another human, but I can see there being some dominant tactics. I mostly won by blocking off the bigger chunk of the map and then flood filling it until the opponent runs out of moves first. Having some dynamic obstacles on the map may help keep it fresh.

I worried controls will be a bit weird at a glance, but it's pretty comfy to play.

Limited (in) Space by Martin183 2023-10-08T12:13:24Z

A very nice little game.

Feels pretty good to weave between asteroids and shoot the ufo down. Controls are slightly floaty, but it helps transfer the weight of the station.

I assumed the game whould get easier the smaller your station gets, but I would end up sliding off or hitting a falling meteor due to not being able to tell how high they are on the Z axis. I feel having more indicators would help your survival.

I can imagine more could be added, like custumizing and reinforcing the tiles, or expanding them, or some automated defenses, etc.

Pallet Panic by Henrik Ganard 2023-10-03T19:59:48Z

Very polished and well put together. Makes me feel like I am doing an actual job, though I am not quite sure I like that mood xD

Presentation is great, and controls feel right for a chunky forklift.

The fact a single run takes so long is a bit of a bummer, especially with this difficulty. Would have appreciated lower task numbers and lower timer. I managed to get yellow palletes task done only on the 2nd try, and while I was trying to get purples sorted, the truck just left me with a few and didn't manage to come back until the shift was over :p

Is it even theoretically possible to finish all the tasks in one run? I assume not since it's quite a tight shift.

CASHBLAZER by Jim jagers 2023-10-02T16:48:06Z

An interesting take on the theme.

Took some time to get used to the controls and the popup on the web version in the middle of the screen gets quite distracting. Also the super shot doesn't seem all that super when everything seems to die in one hit, and is harder to aim xD

Island Mushroom Rescue by Pe7e 2023-10-02T06:07:16Z

An entertaining little game. Was fun figuring out how the resources interact with the different mushrooms. Not much depth as is, but there is potential for more.

I wish there was a way to delete mushrooms near the end since you usually get stuck waiting for water to delete them for you so you can get the raft.

Casual Movers by Tristian Tee 2023-10-03T05:56:34Z

An interesting concept. It's fun seeing how badly the driver drives, ruining everything you paid for in fantastical ways. I did keep running into technical issues which soured the experience (no restart option if you run out of money, too many items means the next button gets covered, no consistency on damage values, sometimes better packed truck would get less money, etc)

Limited Spacebar by IngeniousPhoenix 2023-10-04T15:42:04Z

Fun solid and focused game. The beat is nice and mechanics are smoot and responsive.

Would be nice to have had more variety in the laser patterns instead of just speeding them up (maybe mixing them together) since it gets pretty unfair later on.

Fairy Tale 2: Big Trouble in Pixie Hollow by Matt Green 2023-10-03T07:47:28Z

A fun little stacking exercise. Very thematically appropriate, and hard mode does seem nigh impossible, seeing I barely got through easy mode. While it's fun looking at the fairies do their thing, there is not much need for our input once the initial layout is settled. I wish there was an auto-done button so we can just see the whole thing play out until conclusion.

Spectra by red-stake 2023-10-02T15:59:36Z

Wow, this is a blast to play. The aesthetics, controls and the feedback are very good. A shame you couldn't add sounds, would have made it even more satisfying.

I did get stuck in the walls a few times when shape changed, though, which I doubt was intentional. And shooting at the big cube with the powerup shakes the screen so much I couldn't tell what was going on xD

Gap Dango Shooter by zundou 2023-10-04T15:00:27Z

A fun bite sized game. Feels like I entered some festival booth with the music and the atmosphere. I am probably getting scammed but I don't care xD

It is a bit frustrating to have dango go up/down without any way to hit them. If they were at least moving at an angle, there would be some chance to reach it. A waste to have a golden dango that's just to the right of my skewer, going down along the gap, tempting me.

Magic Fox Diary by Berin 2023-10-08T08:33:13Z

A nice little story with some very solid writing that makes me feel like reading more.

I got all the 4 endings I believe. I think the stat summaries at the top are one step behind the actual stat result, so it's more about paying attention to the text on repeat playthroughts than checking at the top.

I do think the connection to the theme is pretty flimsy, but it was a nice experience.

Light up the Room by rubatotree 2023-10-03T09:22:34Z

Cute fun little game. I quite like the aesthetic, even without the effects-on version (the other one was too laggy for me). It's cute seeing the ghost struggle to keep existing as you light things up.

The random levels are working pretty good actually, but level 26 took half a minute to generate for some reason.

Snow Rose by Shiivers 2023-10-08T07:42:30Z

A nice short moody trip of a game.

I liked the atmosphere and the style the most, with mechanics having great potential for further improvement too. Like detatching the head to throw it to another body, or attaching unconventional limbs. It gets me thinking.

I did get stuck at the start when I threw the arm up and it landed next to the button. Had to restart and try again. Wish there was a room reset option or something of the sort (It can happen automatically later, just wish I could do it on demand).

In general, controls were a bit on the clunky side, but considering the mechanics, it's understandable. Would need quite a bit of time to figure out the best way to map it all out.

lungage by mindhijacker 2023-10-08T09:10:06Z

A nice first attempt for a LD game.

The graphics are honestly fine, they are functional and redable. I am having issues figuring out what the hell the enemies and we really are (is it flesh tanks?) but all I need to know is that they are different than me.

Music got grating pretty fast, especially when playing longer. And I played long: lung.png

The biggest problems are on the gameplay side: - the enemy hitboxes are very wrong (I would hit enemies that were at completely different places where my bullet hit) - the rock pickup mechanic don't serve much purpose (I can always just press to pick a single rock up and throw it right away) - the boring time after cleaning a wave and waiting for a new one - the lack of varity to the waves and enemies (not sure what's the difference with the green dotted one, maybe he is the only one with the proper hitbox?)

I do like the concept of managing your breathing for maximum use, and the way it works is actually good, just everything around it needs more work.

I notice from the comments you are doing a danmaku game. I would advise focusing on the basic mechanics first (moving, enemies and shooting), instead of the gimmick (lung capacity). If Touhou games are to be your inspiration, you should know it's all about the solid gameplay core and the gimmick is just a spice on top of it, that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Best of luck going forward!

Wizard Quest 2D by JsMethod 2023-10-02T17:00:56Z

An entertaining little game with some potential. The silly aesthetic is helping the mood, especially zombies curving to catch me sometimes.

Space bar being used for shooting also would sometimes pick my upgrades the moment they popup since I would be pressing the button franctically xD Sometimes my shot direction gets stuck to the right regardless of where I am moving which makes things harder.

Baby Deer and Momma Deer by Peach Tree Pixels 2023-10-03T08:06:02Z

A nice chill puzzle game. Very accurate depiction of an avid deer fan that hasn't bought a pc for a few decades.

Wish I could see how tired baby deer is in some way to know clearly where to put the mushrooms, and to even figure out that mushrooms affect the tiredness in some way.

Also, I am unsure if the erase glitch is intentional but it sure helped trivialize some later tougher levels xD

Mini Architect by Mr Bluecap 2023-10-02T15:45:17Z

Interesting concept and presentation. Music was pleasant and the characters and their requests are charming.

As others mentioned, some more feedback when fulfilling requirements would be welcome. And balancing the maps with the requirements would be nice since I kept getting either impossible requests or trivial requests.

CaveBots by quasilyte 2023-10-04T14:27:08Z

A very nice little game. I am not that good at these games but I feel if I keep playing around with it I may win soon xD

As others mentioned, it's a bit hard to get going due to the complexity, with some trial and error to figure out what works and what doesn't but the rules are clear and transparent so it can be learned with time.

I also like the pixel art, feels real nice.

CaveBots by quasilyte 2023-10-04T14:48:05Z

Won it at easy now :D

Got to say, would be nice to get energy constantly instead of wait for a package once in a while. Or at least have some timers so I know when it's coming. Having more timers for building would be nice too.

Packed Blobs by PowerOfSin 2023-10-02T10:42:00Z

@oadt levels are definitely not perfect at the moment, would need a few days of learning the rules myself to make it better xD

I opted to make them less challenging but completable so more people can try the mechanics out.

At least I managed to squeeze in Random levels for messing with the blobs more.

Packed Blobs by PowerOfSin 2023-10-04T09:39:28Z

@rubatotree undo was on the TODO list but I deemed it too risky to add after everything else was done. Would have made so many bugs for sure xD

Packed Blobs by PowerOfSin 2023-10-06T12:51:23Z

@furano hm... odd. I use firefox on pc and phone and it works for me. May be something else causing it? Glad you liked it either way :D

Packed Blobs by PowerOfSin 2023-10-09T17:10:55Z

@ellaris @knexator @chuckiee thanks for the feedback! Definitely would have been better to make the selections happen on the board itself.

I worked on that before on a different game and I just knew it can't happen within the jam timeframe because there is a lot more that goes into it. Like overlapping indicators for different areas and clarity without covering other squares and whatever else happens. I may look into it when I eventually get time to polish the game up.

@lereveur that's concerning... I may have messed something up. Gonna need to check it, thanks.

Packed Blobs by PowerOfSin 2023-10-09T17:14:48Z

@lereveur just checked, it saves them, but fails to update them until you restart the game, for some reason xD So if you reopened it now it should show. I may patch that up if I get the time.

shoot snake by herh 2023-10-05T09:24:58Z

A nice pocket sized game, in more ways than one xD

Presentation is clear and with quick restarts help keep you going for a while. I managed to get 31 for best score.

Sadly, there is frustration to be had beside the intended stress of getting less and less space.

Not being able to hit targets outside of the border means that there is even less space than intended to get to hit the targets. The turret even turns towards them, instead of shooting those on the other side so I can get away from the wall. The dash is also not too helpful since once you grow big it just bounces you between walls, making this issue more apparent.

I do not know why we are aiming automatically, but I am unsure if aiming manually would make it more or less difficult xD

Limited Space Corporation by TotallyNotYT 2023-10-02T19:38:36Z

For a first game attempt it's quite an achievement, especially under such time constraints.

It controls and functions well, except for the odd graphical glitches I kept having (background tiling and ship disappearing).

Limited Space Corporation by TotallyNotYT 2023-10-03T12:30:45Z

@totallynotyt I am on a pretty old configuration so it may be that xD
