LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Hope/Remember by arzi 2020-10-06T19:56:22Z

I like the simplicity of the pixel art! Out of curiosity: did you create it from within Unity, or with another tool? You got me interested now :)

I thought of going with a purple/orange range for my game initially too, but couldn’t get it to work - I really like yours!

Also: Really good soundtrack, it fits nicely to me!

And as @wheybags mentions, I would have loved to have an option to use buttons only as well. Maybe you can still do the "port"? (I have no idea what the rules say, though)

BUSHIDŌ by wujood 2020-10-08T10:03:37Z

I really like this, great game! Had fun playing it and loved the music, sound design (the wind, chimes, etc... btw: is there a meaning to that "yuoooouuuuuh"-voice that comes with the virtue-titles?) and overall atmosphere, also with the level design (lanterns, torii, etc) and the game art. If you consider developing it further, maybe the virtues can be represented in the level challenges/tasks/mechanics even further? Great choice with the screen size! Wanna be a bushi now... or watch a Kurosawa movie

Looping for lööps by Steffo 2020-10-24T08:49:10Z

Very cool game, I like the concept especially with the classic j'n'r + controlling the buttons! It might have been a little bit too difficult for me right away; maybe a little less difficult obstacles or a chance to getting to know them with some sort of checkpoints or other "rewards" in between would be an idea for a player like me? The soundtrack is great, I love the baseline!

Knights of the Holy Loop by RenD 2020-10-24T09:00:49Z

This. Is. Awesome! Never really played much turn based combat, now I'm seriously interested with this loop mechanic, I enjoyed it very much.

Had some minor issues playing in full screen and controlling the mouse clicks (I assume this is due to issues on my software/hardware end). The art style and music is very much to my liking, I would love to know what you made it with. Also how the music fits to the intro, fights, map... that's very well executed! Also the shaking screen and particle effects add to the melee experience... I could go on, but I'll simply come back to learn from what you made here :)

The Looppy by asfdfdfd 2020-10-07T07:28:22Z

Fun game, well done! I like the loop idea with the different speeds of the luggage belts and the barking mechanic very much. The red colored belts made me feel like it did sth wrong in the beginning, but I got used to it quickly. Collecting the bones felt rewarding, also thanks to the great sound design (I liked just barking around for fun  ).

Skyloop by Coda Highland 2020-10-08T10:21:41Z

This was fun, collecting the wheels and trying to stay on a straight line at the same time. And those debts breathing down my neck ;) The loop tracks felt nice, I just wished at times there was sth like a boost or a HUD that told me where the others are (I guess I've been affected by some other racing game too much). Realizing that the other cars stayed on track, crashed at times and restarted purposefully, it is incredible (to me as a newbie) how you managed to finish this during the jam. There seems to be so much going on that I am not even really aware of. Impressive!

Uroboro's Guardian by Tomeyro 2020-10-07T07:42:57Z

I like this game very much! Loved the art style, colors, music and the general presentation. Gameplay is also fun! I agree with @anaferus, it's a great gameplay idea that works with the theme nicely. It makes an interesting and challenging game that I'd love to explore more. But at the same time, it makes my head spin around a lot (as a counter measure I started jumping around a lot  ). Maybe spinning the bg more slowly (or not at all) would help players like me while still having the challenge and "disorientation mechanic"?

Suburban Bus MAYHEM by joonamo 2020-10-06T08:38:12Z

This looked fun and... it was! Really appealing presentation, nice chaotic gameplay (the perspective got me confused a bit, but I guess that was on purpose). I had trouble displaying it in fullscreen, also there was no audio (probably due to software on my end, as it seems to have worked for others?). Overall, I'd like to play it again with expanded and refined gameplay. Maybe some low poly art would go along with it well?

Suburban Bus MAYHEM by joonamo 2020-10-06T12:25:08Z

@joonamo yes, its probably my setup (Safari + macOS). I used Unity WebGL for my game (https://nyuuubi.itch.io/stuck-in-the-loop-dungeon) as well, fullscreen works for me there though. My game does not have sound, but those with UnityWebGL that do have audio (eg https://snowinn.itch.io/hamster-simulator) work with my settings. Maybe it depends a) on the build settings (dev build?) or b) on itch.io's settings?

Looper by Maytch 2020-10-08T09:43:51Z

Great game, I like the basic idea/the mechanics, although at times it was a bit hard to predict the loops in order to move through the level. Art style and music are very pleasing, overall it feels very polished to me! It was fun to play :)

8BEATS by DangerBlack 2020-10-24T08:42:38Z

This is seriously addictive! And extremely well executed; the things that could be tweaked in my opinion have been mentioned by others (eg lots to do at the same time, bugs) and they are just minor issues that probably need fine tuning. I think the basic game is just great and I can't even fathom how you made this in one weekend. Is there a way to play different styles of music btw? Maybe that would be a nice addition

Loopy Hoop by Ratrat44 2020-10-05T23:14:15Z

For some reason, using the scarf loop as a weapon felt very natural, also with the health packs making it bigger. The game controls are nice overall, the theme and sounds are great too... I think this could be a great starting point for sth bigger!

Wild Loop by Cerebral Bore 2020-10-05T22:51:26Z

This looks great, visually really really nice with the water color style and the parallaxing. I also enjoy the animation style of the characters. The music was nice too, but it didn't really give a me a sense of urgency/chasing – after a while I got it though, as I remembered also the description of the game. Thx, gave me a few ideas for my further game dev journey!

Need More Space by wheatleyscience 2020-10-07T06:31:28Z

As others have said before, this is really really well done, especially considering the time frame. Great team effort! I always wanted to give the "walking around a planet"-gameplay a shot myself (of course on a much lower level though ;) ) - "Need more Space" just has become sort of the benchmark for that. Music, UI design (the arrow pointing back to the rocket!), graphics (Colors, lighting, art like the engraved rocks), the walking animation and controls,... there's so much great stuff here!

Scvng.R by ComicSans 2020-10-07T07:00:08Z

Great work on the theme! I didnt get the rocket launcher yet either (lvl2), but really liked the concept with the looped logic slots.

Amusement Shark by No Grapes Games 2020-10-08T10:35:16Z

A very appealing and fun game! Writing/story/premise leading up to the loop mechanic/gameplay is masterful, as are the music and sound design + the fail animations. They got me totally immersed, seriously felt some kind of excitement like I'm there in an amusement park or at a fair. Altogether very well done (during a jam!!!)!

Hamster Simulator by snowinn 2020-10-06T19:10:44Z

I just managed a hamster... and as many others above: I enjoyed it! I dig the simplicity and managing/upgrading mechanic, it's a strangely mesmerizing experience altogether.

Many things have been said before, e.g. the clever choice of art over image, which was new to me; I'd also love to have a hotkey/upgrade button as you and @kassie-kitsune mentioned. I was wondering whether it would be possible to frame the game somehow after I read about your tournament idea, maybe sth like story("why am I doing this to this hamster?"), races, managing a team of hamsters, etc. would be worth pursuing for further development? (this experience really got into my head, did I just write "managing a team of hamsters"? ) Seriously, great job!

@unhandyred: Whaaaat?!? :rofl: :thumbsup:

Altered Nexus by clemonades 2020-10-07T14:24:45Z

Awesome game, great game art, animations, particles, music, sounds, transitions and the game play & set up of the challenges/puzzls is really nice. Also how you teach the player the controls in the first level, really well done! Lots to learn for me here. And the messages... strangely motivating, annoying, funny, ironic... all at the same time. They definitively added to the whole game xp for me.

Group Chat by Meatball 2020-10-24T09:14:14Z

Cool characters, nicely done! I am actually curious now what they could do with their selfies or what could happen to them while they are walking and starring in their phones...

Seed by Asemic 2020-10-06T12:15:23Z

I enjoyed this experience! the art style is usually not what I'd personally go for, but I liked it here very much. The whole gameplay kept me literally in the loop, I think the theme has been represented very well! I had a few issues figuring out the controls, but then that's the point, right?! The music was great, especially as it "grew" too. If you keep developing it, I think it would be worthwhile to put a lot of focus on audio editing (e.g. transitions between tracks, equalising, etc.) and giving it a "best XP with headphones" badge, the musical experience is a huge part for me here :) Well done!

FarmerDude by DavideMoriello 2020-10-27T07:35:05Z

Looks very good & polished already, I like the art style very much! The gameplay is simple (= quick to pick up) & fun, in my view this will be a great mobile game. Had one round where the shovels wouldn't return quickly, so a nice addition might be something where the player can destroy stranded shovels. Good luck with the further development!

Stuck in a planet by Ethery 2020-10-06T08:17:18Z

Would love to test it, but the Web-Version doesn't load properly. Let me know once you fixed it!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-06T05:24:45Z

Sorry & thanks everybody for letting me know! Lot's of new things going on for me here, including itch.io. Found the publish button, should be accessible now at https://nyuuubi.itch.io/stuck-in-the-loop-dungeon Thx!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-06T18:16:11Z

@adil thanks, much appreciated! I still have a few story ideas, as I totally miscalculated the scope of what I can bring into the game during the jam. I plan to continue development, hopefully I can bring them in then. Same goes for a better melee attack routine.

@snowinn Many thanks as well for your feedback! And yes, absolutely. I had a few ideas on how to do sound & music + UI, as they are fundamental in my opinion too. Yet... "unexperienced dev at work" ;) I simply mismanaged what I could accomplish within the 72h. Looking forward to give it another shot next time :v:

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-06T18:20:57Z

@asemic: Thank you, that means a lot to me. I hope I can further develop story & feel to make it a proper immersive thing :) Same goes with sound & animation, definitely have those on my list!

@joonamo: Thank you as well, hope I can develop it a bit more!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-08T08:29:24Z

@clemonades Thank you so much, I will! I enjoy the whole experience and playing games like "Altered Nexus" is a great motivation :)

@coda-highland: Thank you very much as well! Yes, health bar.... there is none 😬😉😆 UI was on my list of fundamentals, I hope I get around to it next time.

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-08T08:33:20Z

@tauheed-game-dev: Thank you! I will definitively work on animations (and particles for that matter), character controls and UI next time. There just wasn't any time. I'm amazed at how well so many contributors managed the scope of their games. I aspire to do so, too... someday ;)

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-10T09:52:50Z

@sharked: Thanks! I plan to continue working/learning with this game, then I'll look into creating proper melee mechanics (the shield button is a great idea!) + particles/more feedback

@cookie-chr: Thank you, too! Yes, definitively: sound + healthbar/more UI!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-10T09:58:19Z

@nablaz: Thank you very much for playing and your feedback! Melee controls, UI (HP and/or healthbar), bg music & sfx are on the list :)

@vleue: Thanks to you as well. The "current loop" idea is great, I will consider it for UI development, as well as proper particles/UI to know what happened. I think I also should reconsider the spawn points... simplest solution might be: enemies should probably spawn of screen to prevent them from appearing on top of the player

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-10T10:02:35Z

@monninen: Thank you :) UI will be sth I'll work on next time a lot sooner (never got around to it this time)

@flazone: Much appreciated!!! I'll try to further develop the art; it's basically sketchnoted, which I like as well. But I think I can learn a lot more there as well and it's really fun to scribble around ;)

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-10T10:07:07Z

@graebor: Thank you very much, it's still a bit surreal that I managed to commit something. At the same time I realise I have managed that bit so I can focus on basic things to make a game next time: controls + feedback on attacks/UI + sound.Looking forward to it!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-10T18:13:50Z

Thanks for that feedback, @acaral! "mechanic of a room in Zelda"... I like that association, I'll let that sink in :)

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-15T11:11:22Z

@asfdfdfd: It is!

@davidb: Thank you! I'll look into developing it further, style as well as melee controls

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-24T08:31:51Z

@meatball: Thanks!

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-26T08:52:38Z

Thanks everybody for playing the game & leaving valuable feedback, much appreciated! I'm looking forward to reiterate through some aspects of this game, maybe I'll manage to create an improved post jam version, we'll see. Definitively looking forward to the next jam and applying the things I learned here. Bye for now :)

Stuck in the Loop Dungeon by Nyubi 2020-10-27T07:28:13Z

@davidemoriello: Thank you & thanks for the remark. Is there anything in particular I could look into to prevent this from happening?

Time Saver by Daniikk1012 2020-10-06T08:21:04Z

Will there be an HTML version, would love to play it, looks intriguing, gameplay description as well as visuals (color palette, mix of bg + fg art)!

Time Saver by Daniikk1012 2020-10-08T09:25:32Z

Thanks for the web version! As I said before, really like the visuals, that is the color palette and the mix of bg + fg art. The gameplay/mechanics is really unique to me and fits the theme very well. I didn't quite get the hang of weapon #2 (is there a resource limit?), but somehow that didn't really seem to bother me, as I still had the katana. Also the sound design is really well done, for me the sounds fit well with the "time"-theme

Astro Juice - (DING ESPM-RJ) by Breno Alves 2020-10-05T23:00:42Z

I like this, I really do, and I will come back to play it again! Visuals, sounds, gameplay, level design.... there's a lot I can learn from :) One thing I had a tiny bit of trouble with was having to iterate four times when you don't manage an obstacle, then 4 times again... and again... certainly demanded some classic frustration tolerance ;)

Isolation by Tauheed Game Dev 2020-10-08T08:53:23Z

I enjoyed playing "Isolation", thx for making it! Art style, well polished, the humour (that poor tree, the loot from the chest  ) Only a few minor ideas: maybe a UI screen before respawning would be nice, to reinforce the loop feel? And a weird thing: to me somehow the typing sound felt a tiny bit too fast/high pitched. Great game and also nice work on the trailer (script, the voice!, music, humour). Also, I'll check out your YT channel later :)

LD49 — Unstable

StackItToSpace by Sarah 2021-10-13T05:57:04Z

This was fun! Really nice graphics and audio, simple yet capturing gameplay with the lines marking what the goal is... and space! Thank you!

Formula Dare by Taffaz 2021-10-11T20:32:35Z

Wow, this seems to be a very carefully crafted and thought through engine of a game! Not quite sure though if I properly understood what I was doing; as mentioned by others before, this was a bit overwhelming for me as well. but of course that might be different for others who are more experienced with the worker placement genre. so presenting the different options (HR, brakes, etc) one after the other would definitively be a great gameplay addition for me as a player. Maybe connecting that tutorial to the story line (that you provide at the beginning) would allow for a smooth way of guiding the players into getting a (vague) sense of how to control the different variables? Anyways, you definitively got something here that's worth developing further imho!

An Unstable World by TheInkSkeleton 2021-10-11T20:47:43Z

Nice level design, the circular game world was very appealing to me. Maybe as an idea for further development: It would be great if there was an option to keep „saving“ money to build stuff even after everything has collapsed (maybe veeeeery slowly, but still getting some money….)? Great job though nevertheless, really a solid game idea in my opinion!

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-05T08:42:13Z

Thanks @cedric86 for playing! You're definitely not, I'd say it's much rather to blame on the game dev's design choices ;) and on the lack of time to create a proper win state. I hoped you could play against your previous results, but a "win message" would definitely be more motivating!

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-11T19:54:02Z

Thanks @justinmullin for your feedback and for playing! I'm very happy that this experience provided something to you that felt right – even though there was so much destabilising stuff going on (maybe even more so because I wasn't able to put any focus on balancing things out) - and that getting to the end of the timer gave you some sort of orientation. Love that you liked the music!

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-11T19:57:50Z

@parker-nalch Thank you too! Yeah, the camera is definitively one (of the many) thing(s) too balance out more properly next time. While testing (in Unity) I always checked the scene view to see where I was; kind of unfair that I didn't provide that option to the player as well ;) Smoothing this out and/or deciding on some unstable-yet-not-totally-unfair perspective deliberately would be definitively worth the while.

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-12T05:50:02Z

Thank you very much for playing @recnaps! Playing several times (or at least twice) definitively gives you a better idea of what you can do - should add something that encourages the player to do so there, as well as instructions. And focussing on better camera movement (and angle/distance), is something I want to look at next time, too.

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-12T05:54:10Z

@sibi Thanks! Yeah, UI is quite something different – still got a long way to go there. Appreciate that you like the music as part of the whole experience very much!

Desultorium by Nyubi 2021-10-22T09:07:31Z

Thank you @sarah for playing and your feedback, it is much appreciated!

Critical Mass by Parker Nalch 2021-10-11T20:13:36Z

Really nice retro arcade graphics and gameplay! Enjoyed playing it for quite a while, loved the simplistic but on point animations for turns and toggling into overdrive as well as the interface. All works very well together for me. I also really enjoyed how the music matches the flying speed. Another thingI liked is that the info on controls was directly underneath the game screen (also nice layout/design of the itch.io page, btw). It all adds up to a very coherent and immersive game xp in my opinion. Just a random idea: Maybe having some keyboard shortcuts to restart the game more quickly (and without a mouse) would be another idea for adding to the retro feel? Thanks for this well polished game :)

Candle Coffee Courier by BluishGreenPro 2021-10-05T16:06:18Z

old school platforming, nice graphics, music and sound design, well spaced save points - well done!

Box Among Circles by omagapower 2021-10-05T15:55:26Z

Nice game, fun to play and replay – with the score as a benchmark, I felt like replaying quite a lot. I liked the dashing feature as well! Maybe as an expansion idea: you could create levels where you have to preplan/manage your route or something to get to an exit and fight of all the enemies at the same time. And a soundtrack and shooting/hitting sounds would be awesome for even more immersion :)
