I love the game, the music and the art are excellent. I really liked the gamplay and the idea too. All very well done congratulations.

khaotom 2021-10-05 15:59

I am not gamer enough to get past the 3rd checkpoint, but what I saw up to then was very nicely presented!

alex-one 2021-10-05 16:01

The character was stuck running left, couldn't quite figure out what caused it. But the sounds, graphics, light and ui was well rounded and would stand up to most oldschool platformers. Really liked the artwork.

chainsawmcd 2021-10-05 16:03

The music and art are really outstanding - the character graphics in particular. Got Super Meat Boy vibes from the gameplay. My only criticism is that every now and then the camera moves slower than the character and you die from something off-screen so you don't know what to do next time through. But overall this is great work!

betamorfosis 2021-10-05 16:03

Wow the game is so polished. Beautiful pixelart, great music, game feel. I have no idea on how to improve this game, well done!

sli 2021-10-05 16:04

Very fun, good job!

legolula 2021-10-05 16:04

Really hard game but super fun and overall a great entry

very-bad-bunny-studio 2021-10-05 16:05

I take some time to understand how the wall jump works, but after some minutes it was just fun! Very funny dialogs and graphics.

j-star 2021-10-05 16:05

I like the music and the graphics are very nice. I do not really get the connection to the theme to be honest, and I had trouble with the wall jump, it didn't really always snap when I wanted to and the opposite happened as well. Overall a solid game, good job!

nyubi 2021-10-05 16:06

old school platforming, nice graphics, music and sound design, well spaced save points - well done!

its-f4llen 2021-10-05 16:06

really good game, all I think you should do is maybe make some easier level to begin but a great game overall!

randomphantom 2021-10-05 16:13

The platforming is pretty tight but its too difficult in bits with the wall jumping being a bit too sensitive while the gravity seems too harsh (camera can't follow up with the falling). Cool graphics and music, and the pause before dying is helpful

pobix 2021-10-05 16:16

Presentation-wise, this game is very good - the art and animations are beautiful, the music is great, and I enjoyed the dialogue. However, the levels require great precision even though the controls don't feel snappy enough - making the game hard and unforgiving. The checkpoints are spaced relatively well, however, so it doesn't feel overly frustrating. Still, if you'd tweak some values, I believe this game could become a lot better.

samuel-hollywood-summers 2021-10-05 16:22

Great game, if a little punishing. I'm surprised I was able to beat the game, having struggled a lot with specific obstacles. I'm glad the checkpoints work after the coffee mishap, as the prospect of doing all of that under time pressure in one go would be too much. My suggestions would be to be more lenient with hitboxes, and to get non-devs to playtest games like this as you go in the future. Many jam games end up way too hard because the devs know exactly what to do and practise it loads while making the game. The character and their changing facial expressions are great, and I enjoyed the visuals and music. The text narrative at the star was a nice touch, but I did find it interrupted the flow of the game a little too much and too often at the start. The game feels really complete, and is impressive for a jam. Well done! Thanks for sharing.

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-05 17:25

Thanks so much to everyone for their feedback on the game! I've read every comment, and I'm just responding to a few specific points that seem to be recurring; @samuel-hollywood-summers Agreed about it being too tough. We were only able to finish the level with about 1.5 hours left in the jam; at that point, it was at the level of "Is it possible? Okay, ship it!" It burns my soul to see the suggestion about difficulty tuning though, because it's something I'm constantly telling others, and very well aware of when I have more time to iteratively playtest. @j-star We sort of lost the connection to the theme as time went on and we had to cut back the scope of the project. The only way it's still tangentially related is the Volcano itself being "unstable" (on the verge of eruption). Totally fair to dock us points in the Theme category for that. @alex-one Not sure exactly why you were stuck running to the left, did you have a controller plugged in?

krik-iddqd 2021-10-05 18:08

Nice platformer with amazing art. Moderately difficult, which is compensated by well-placed checkpoints. Probably, it should be so. The music is a little annoying, since the melody is too short for a such game, but the sound is generally well chosen. The only thing is a couple of overly difficult moments (especially at the end when you run back) and I will support the comment above that the game required playtests on non-devs, plus the already mentioned slow camera and too much interruption with dialogues at the very beginning. But in general - a great game!

skvader-418 2021-10-05 18:53

The art and lighting are simply amazing. I like the idea of Backtracking trough the same level. The movement felt a bit slow and slug-ish at first but i got used to it. The camera lags behind a lot, mostly when im falling down which often leads to me falling into lava. At first it was really easy, then it turned to nearly impossible, and then into moderate which is to be expected really. Also coffee and candles... briliant. The fast respawns are a great idea as it makes me go "one more try". Controls are easy to learn, i accidentaly clicked through the tutorial. Overall for a jam game, its fun, looks good and plays well, that is what you are aiming for

jvdwijk 2021-10-05 23:24

Such a fun game, difficult but very fun to challenge yourself. Loved the twist of having to go back too, did not expect that!

bloodbane 2021-10-06 05:00

It's too hard for me and I decided to stop. That being said, it's good platformer. I don't see nor feel unstable theme though.

doctorturbo 2021-10-07 00:30

I did like the controls and the art so I kept playing for a while. The difficulty might turn some people off but it was still reasonably challenging in my opinion. One of the things that frustrated me was the wallride mechanic being triggered with the character too high relative to a ledge. In this case a ledge-grab or climb mechanic would have probably helped. I under stand the time-pressure though.

decadedecaf 2021-10-07 13:09

For a game jam platformer, the controls were extremely tight and the level design was definitely present. I enjoyed the world you built and I adore B. Quick Chadwick (my last name is Quick, haha). The checkpoint character is also a fun addition. The animation was pleasant and the subtle squishes you did to the sprites went a long way.

Great entry!

minidavid 2021-10-09 17:40

sweet goodness, this is good. Well done.

etrealjunior 2021-10-10 04:13

Congratulations for the game, and I wanted to highlight some points to improve for the next upgrades, just enable it to stick to the wall by pressing a button, because most of the time the gameplay is being hampered by it sticking everywhere, do not have the need to the player being perfect all the time to overcome the obstacles, the chance for him to win sometimes, because not everyone is expert in games, and you end up missing the chance to add an audience that would be interested in your game to stay because you can't play, I hope I helped, a big hug.

kbf123 2021-10-10 05:14

Well done! A bit short, but not bad. (I did find it odd that I died a few times falling offscreen despite knowing there was ground below though)

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-10 19:14

@bloodbane Thanks for taking the time to try it, this was an experiment in making a tougher than usual platformer, and I think there are a lot of ways I can still improve to make things less frustrating @kbf123 There are a few hazards against the walls its very easy to hit because you can't see them; but certainly agreed that we could have built this better. Thanks for your feedback! @etrealjunior Thanks for the suggestions; in my non-jam game, Worlds Within Worlds, I have a config option for this in the menus, since I know some people prefer it that way!

steve7411 2021-10-11 21:37

What a fun platformer! The controls feel great. Loved the graphics. The only issue I had was that the camera didn't seem to follow fast enough when falling down to lower ground in a couple spots. Super nice little game!

nbumgardner 2021-10-13 23:00

The music hooked me from the start, the characters' spooky theme was charming, and I liked the difficulty curve being on the easy side while also progressing through harder maneuvers.

A possible bug related to the camera, is you can lose a life by jumping down into the right-most valley without touching any walls, as if it were a bottomless pit because you traveled too fast.

For future versions, maybe the checkpoints could sound more ghostly with an Oooh! to be in character, although the sound used was still good for sounding like a checkpoint. I felt a little regret at not having some optional collectable that could change the storyline, maybe note fragments teaching the character something that would help them understand something ahead of time ... even if in their hubris they only read half of it and still make the same cutscene choices.

Overall great job, looking forward to seeing what you all do next year!

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-15 23:09

@nbumgardner Thanks for the feedback! We were considering the idea of the character being able to find the melted courier and a can of Oil, with the option to deliver that instead, but didn't have time The issue related to the camera is actually hitting an off-screen hazard; that's my fault for designing a level where there's more verticality than the camera was designed for.

togis 2021-10-18 03:56

Hey there! This game was really amazing to play! Sorry I coudn't go far in the showcase, I'm a bit of a platformer nood :fire: Thanks for joining us live!

I finally had the time to come back and rate everything I played so far!

Here is a link to the vod of the review if you wish to see it again: https://www.youtube.be/watch?v=1gUA0Q2dn6I&t=15985s

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-18 18:37

@togis Thanks so much for playing the game! I've shared the VOD with the rest of the team. Your feedback was really helpful and I already made a bunch of post-jam changes, including making the level easier and hit-boxes more precise.

hacksawunit 2021-10-20 23:50

The controls and player mechanics are positively funky- very strange, but in my opinion, quite good once one understands Chadwick's capabilities. I actually grew to love the sticky wallslide/jump, and was able to get through pretty speedily once I got a grip on it. Although, I understand where others would have trouble- some of the sections require very tight timing. The twist at the halfway mark was awesome and totally unexpected! Oh, and the art and mood were excellent too. Great entry!!

rosypenguin 2021-10-21 05:58

Love it, always a fan of challenging-platformer-with-frequent-checckpoints. Nice use of wall jumps for level design.
