Great game ! I love the music, sound effect and the retro feel it has. 2 things I think could be improved: 1/ Sometimes I feel like there is no way to past a wall of debris that's a bit frustrating. 2/ The same way you have a sound indicator when you go override I would add a sound indicator for when the fuel is very low and you need to stop using some.

ratogodoy 2021-10-03 20:20

LOL, we made games with the exact same name, yours looks better than mine though

parker-nalch 2021-10-04 00:33

@dekajoo thanks for your comment and your thoughtful review. I agree that there ought to be a low fuel indicator. The hope for the wall of obstacles was to force the player to briefly use some overdrive to blast through, but I agree the spawning could use some TLC

parker-nalch 2021-10-04 00:34

@ratogodoy great minds do think alike! Don't disparage your game's look; I'm a big fan of particles and your game looks very visually appealing.

zapturk 2021-10-04 03:41

I really like the art and the feel of the game.

parker-nalch 2021-10-04 03:51

@zapturk I'm glad you like the art! Usually I wait til the very end of my jam games to do art and end up not particularly liking the end result. This one was art-first and I'm happy it came across

r3l0ad1 2021-10-04 04:37

Cool game, i love the art and the music goes really well with it. The concept is well thought out and fits the theme nicely. Good work!

ghoulean 2021-10-04 04:43

Looks great, nails the arcade aesthetic. I especially like how the health bar is determined by which part of the ship hit an obstacle. Not sure about the iron construction beams in space, think asteroids are a little more appropriate.

Also, I found a bug where I can infinitely increase score by activating overdrive when dead.

qthree 2021-10-04 05:05

Looks good, nice sound, fits theme. But gameplay is too straightforward (in all senses xD).

parker-nalch 2021-10-04 05:40

@r3l0ad1 thank you for the review!

@ghoulean loved the feedback and I agree with you that asteroids would fit the environment better than construction beams. I ended up choosing beams because their colliders would be more straightforward than what I would inevitably want for asteroids. Also thanks for the bug report! I'll try to squash it after judging concludes

@qthree I feel that. I had to cut power-ups for time and I think they'd go quite a ways toward breaking up the straightforwardness

dekajoo 2021-10-04 05:42

Ahh I did not understand that you could blast through at all! @parker-nalch

roelosaurus 2021-10-04 21:25

I dig this. Boosting away the debris is a "blast". 😎

mateu 2021-10-05 00:12

This game is hard - a little too hard. That being said, I really, really like the gameplay. The balance between going fast, but needing to control your fuels is superb. I think you did a great job in that regard. Buuut, it was really difficult, and some of that seemed to be due to too tight spacing of obstacles. Also, collecting the fuel pellets was really satisfying

chromableedstudios 2021-10-05 05:26

Nice minimalist graphics! Enjoyed the game alot, the mechanic reminds me of the old fall down game I used to play on ti83. Music adds nicely to the tension. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to use the overdrive to move things away but that sorta seemed to work I guess?

bridgeonastick 2021-10-05 08:30

I really like that you can blast away obstacles when you initiate an overdrive. It really adds a lot to the game, and adding in the fuel management is really nice. You've struck a really nice balance there. Really fun to play, I liked it!

destroyertech 2021-10-05 08:40

Great game, very fun gameplay and good mechanics, smooth minimal graphics and animation, audio fits in well as well and the mechanics are very appropriate for the theme. Very well done, one of the best I've seen so far!

skleembof 2021-10-05 17:07

I really liked how the unstable fuel core mechanic was both a helpful ability that could save you and a detrimental effect that could get you killed.

The music was nice but the graphics were kind of an issue. Not that they looked bad, but I think you should have varied the size of the energy dots, because playing for a while seeing those dots scrolling by at highs speed made me kind of dizzy.

vimlark 2021-10-05 20:41

Great work. Balancing between the speed and moving obstacles made for some fun game flow.

schuster 2021-10-06 00:39

Nice game, I love the damage mechanic.

mathiouza 2021-10-06 02:42

32740 after some tries x) I beat your score ahah x) Take that! x)

I loved the fake 3D on the vessel. The sounds were cool too (maybe just a tip for your next games, think to make the volume like at 50 or 75% because it was like super loud even with my PC at 20%, but that's a minor issue, don't worry).

Great work!

fabioecco 2021-10-06 04:21

It was a bit confusing at the start, but super fun once I understood the mechanics, good job!

madjackmcmad 2021-10-06 04:29

Smooth little game here, well done. I love simple score chasers. Having bits of the ship take individual damage was a nice touch.

nardandas 2021-10-07 06:40

Well polished game! When it got really fast it was really hard! I appreciate the way different parts of the ship took damage and affected how it flew. It would've just been nice to have a bit more variation in the game.

caudatecoder 2021-10-07 12:49

Really cool arcade game!

It took me a while to understand hot to play it, but then it got pretty good. It's a really cool idea to make the thing that keeps you alive (fuel) also make you unstable. Fits the theme pretty well too -- it's really hard to manage unstable speed and fuel and incoming debris at the same time. Though sometimes it feels overwhelming.

Pretty clever to combine speed boost with "attack"! It also looks very nice and polished. Soundtrack is pretty cool too. It's a nice touch that it changes with the speed of the ship! Good job all-around!

I was streaming and recording my playthrough of random compo games. Yours was on the list... but... uhm I was using new software and didn't check if everything was ok so it recorded like 2/3 of my screen  I saved recordings of games where you could still understand what's going on. Unfortunately in your game I recorded only incoming debris  I hope the detailed feedback above makes up for that

spudboy 2021-10-08 05:39

Got 35,248 as my score. The mechanic is neat and the graphics are appealing, if simple. I also particularly liked how the music was slow or fast to match the ship. Great job!

(btw, there's a glitch where you can increase your score after you die by mashing overdrive lol)

cookie-chr 2021-10-08 15:52

Nice retro style!

nyubi 2021-10-11 20:13

Really nice retro arcade graphics and gameplay! Enjoyed playing it for quite a while, loved the simplistic but on point animations for turns and toggling into overdrive as well as the interface. All works very well together for me. I also really enjoyed how the music matches the flying speed. Another thingI liked is that the info on controls was directly underneath the game screen (also nice layout/design of the itch.io page, btw). It all adds up to a very coherent and immersive game xp in my opinion. Just a random idea: Maybe having some keyboard shortcuts to restart the game more quickly (and without a mouse) would be another idea for adding to the retro feel? Thanks for this well polished game :)

sslees 2021-10-16 19:01

This was awesome, I love when going into overdrive and it pushes the debris away. My favorite concept was not having too much fuel, in addition to too little. And great graphics and music too!
