(postjam upload) A fantastic take on "Spleef". Main space for improvement is readability. Things like the camera drifting too far away from the player and no transition frame(s) between changing positions.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD38 → Binary Glitch

Can't get a score as high as you (560 :( ) but great work! It's a really fun game to play!
Really nice game, forces player to constantly move so there is always action :D Easy to understand and fun.
Neat idea and a flawless execution. However couldn't get past 300!!!
Good solid game, simple but enjoyable. I like how you have to avoid the impact from your own shots and the fact that you can't stop moving makes it quite intense. I managed to get a score of 1200 on my third try :)
I only got to around 1300 at best, although I think one could get pretty ace at this due to the healing grid. It is a great idea, which theoretically allows for really high scores. You'd need to be a wizard to pull it off though.
I really like this one. The graphics are plain thus sharp and easy to follow. The movement could have been off the grid I think. It is somewhat tough to get used to, but it is not terrible by any means.
Good work!
That is an example of an simple game with simple graphics that you can enjoy a lot. I really like it. My record was 1710. Great work.
Very Very cool, I like the idea a lot got. there was a lot of dying the first 10 or so playthrough but after some time I managed to get the hang of it.
So strange when you are running away from the red guys shooting behind you and their explosion kills you, it doesn't seem right. maybe if their explosions only made the block they were on black, while the others get half damaged so you can still walk on them, but if you kill another red guy nearby it would take out the blocks for a while while it regens.
Will definitely play this again though, good job. my highscore is 830.
I love the simple graphics and music it's beautiful and clean. The concept is also really cool and I think it must have been really fun to program that. Good job !
Simple graphics but enjoyable gameplay and concept.Nice work.
Simple yet really effective. Got to 740 in a dozen tries. Great job !
Pretty intense game. I like it ! Very cool idea to reduce the world size with enemies destruction. I sometimes have a bug where I die immediatly after entering the game, but no serious problem overall. Remind me some arcade games from back in the day ^^ Good job !
Simple design, challenging game. Nice job!
@lugdumdare-team this is not really a bug. When you don't move, the floor under you gets black. But I changed/fixed this in the post ludum dare version, there the floor starts getting darker, after you have shot or moved.
Thanks for all the feedback!
MacOS post-jam build wouldn't open. =(
@clegamecoop I don't have a mac so I was not able to test it, someone said he was able to play it, but had to make a file an executable.
I've never been very good at fast paced games, but I definetly still appreciate them! My only complaint was about the die on start thing, and I see that you fixed that in the post version. Good job!
Highscore 1140!! Super addictive and innovative. Well done!
Simple game with an interesting mechanic. Good job. The decision to make the bullets move quicker the further away the mouse cursor is, is interesting. Though this may create the problem that shooting behaves differently depending on the aspect ratio of the screen. I think the game would work better if it wasn't tile based. There is no reason why it has to be tile based and the jerky movement is killing the fun for me (also it doesn't look very pleasing). Also the tile based movement has the side effect that moving diagonally is a lot faster than moving horizontally or vertically.
I did not understand what killed me most of the time. This is especially confusing at the beginning of the game, when you are just standing still and the black adds up on your tile, but you can't see any of it. Maybe this could be solved by making the player a different color and transparent. Thus the player could see that his char is getting darker.
I did not like the music very much, the drum was to repetitive for my taste.
My highscore: 1200
This game had a nice bit of *umpf* to it. Every time I died I felt it. The idea of even your own tail slowly damaging the map added the added challange of not always moving the same path. The minimalistic graphics actually helped the game here quite a bit! Like it a lot!
My Highscore is at ~1,300
After playing this I'm seeing some weird colors flashing in front of my eyes. Pretty trippy. I really like the gameplay here. The graphics look good as well, although I feel quite a bit disoriented after playing. Might be just me though. The music is also good and there's just enough here to have quite a bit of fun for a few minutes. Good work!
Hey! Trying to play on a Mac, and getting the error that it "can't be opened."
I don't think Mac unity files like RAR. I had a similar problem with someone else's entry, and it worked fine after he zipped it.

Wow! That is one difficult game. I like the concept, but it took me a bit to figure out that I have to keep moving or I will die. I started several times and almost immediately died, so I thought the game was broke. Perhaps ramp up that part of the difficulty or place a disclaimer somewhere. Enjoyed the music even if the game was too hard for me. I can't even get close to the scores that others are mentioning.
Here we are @jorbits, nice game! I liked the music: simple but perfect for the game. I died so many times lol! Thing is that shooting it's a bit tricky. Overall good job!
Fun but hard! I like the disappearing animation of the squares, and the particule effects. Nice idea, and clean graphics.
Thanks for putting a GNU/Linux and Mac version ; it seems you're having issues with the executable persmissions of the main file (I had to "chmod +x BinaryGlitchLinux.x86"): you may have more luck with .tar.gz format, as tar, unlike zip/rar, will store the executable bit of its files.
Really great, simple, yet chllanging and entertaining, with fitting music. And a little bit addicting - I didn't wnat to give up before reaching at least 1000, and on my last run I managed 1600, so I am happy :D

I'm running Fedora 25, 64-bit.
A quick glance at my package manager tells me these are probably Unity-specific shared objects that should be packaged with the game, as they're not provided by anything in the package manager.
I'll boot Windows when I get home and try it there.
@the-jahn I'm sorry to hear. I don't have linux or mac so I was not able to test if those builds will work.
Good solid mechanics and well executed. I like the music and sounds. My high score was only 310 though I don't know how you got to over 2000!
It reminds me of playing a twin-stick shooter but with keyboard and mouse. The ability to move in one direction while shooting in another and having to avoid enemies was a good mix.
The gameplay was really smooth, the audio pushed the mood enourmous and the sfx were perfectly working together with the background music. All in all it was a well made game although you don't have the best graphics. I'm impressed by your game.
Well this was fun! You really have to keep moving don't you? I'm too embarrassed to put my score on here in public! Let's just say I didn't beat the record :-) Definitely one to come back to - nice work :-)
Simple concept, great implementation. Really liked the sound effects and music.
I had a blast playing your game on stream. It was fun, it was fast, it was thematically unified. One thing that was off was the bgm track, which was too slow (if I remember the bass was very repetitive as well). Gameplay was great, I liked the original take on the field slowly regenerating as time went by, but in the end my enjoyment was dismayed by the ridiculously high difficulty curve, almost from the very start.
The trailer absolutely makes we want to play, it looks like a lot of fun, but unfortunately the Mac build is still broken. I'll try to find a Windows machine.
Cool game. Kind of reminded me of snake with the trail following the player. Neat concept in how the players and AI work and destroying them and the no move black squares. Good job, keep up the good work!
Fun game, great interpretation of the theme. The minimalist graphics are clear and don't poke the user in the eyes. The only problem is BGM, which is boring and repetitive.
Very cool idea, possibly the best use of theme I've seen so far. I like that the main mechanic is centered around the fact that the world is small, and that informs most of the player's decisions. I did have a few complaints regarding the gameplay, mainly that the bigger enemies make way too much black territory. It seemed like I was dying offscreen to them sometimes, by accidentally shooting them. Additionally, if you don't move straight away, you just straight up lose the game, so that's not good. The bullets collide with each other which was funny. I wasn't a fan of the movement system - the bullets weren't restricted to the tile-based movement, so it made a really unerring contrast between the two making t seem like the player was at a much lower framerate than the bullets. That said, I'm complaining so much because I really like the core game here, it was interesting, original and fun, so great job.
Good original game mechanic. Neat, simple graphics suited the game style. Catchy tune to accompany the action. Difficulty increases at a good rate. Annoying to die for not moving at the start. Perhaps better to wait until player makes his first move before apply that rule, and starting the enemy waves.
@shockeye @bumplepie @headmade @james-dunlap In the post ludum dare version you only start making the tiles black, when you either shoot or move.
Neat game, I like the art style
Nice work! I liked how it almost felt like snake/reverse splatoon, because killing enemies created turf that you COULDN'T touch. The music and visuals were good too! Great job!
This is a great game. I love the mechanics involved. As @chaseplays said it has the Snake feel to it combined with a strategic shooter. If I had to nit-pick then I would say:
* It would help if, when you start a new game, you were already moving (like Snake). I died the first time I played and had no idea why. Since you cannot stop anyway, it seems sensible to start with the player already moving. * Surely it can't be called Binary Glitch since they squares can be grey :grinning:
Excellent work!
Excellent!
Loved it and its really challenging, thich is a good thing for me. Only got 1120 pts though. I hates those blues
Pretty cool game with a great take on the theme. The visuals are obviously minimalistic, but they work well. The movement is a little headache inducing due to the sheer speed of the tile based movement, but it is fun and challenging. The core gameplay mechanic is very clever and I enjoyed it a lot. One thing that was really confusing at first was that you die very quickly when not starting to move, but it's also kinda funny. Good job overall!
Great game, my best score after several tries was 1210.
Great concept! I played it several times, it felt really good and challenging. I love how so much is achieved with so little in this game. The destruction of the terrain is really nifty, and the multicolored enemies make it a real challeng.
Combine that with the music and you got yourself some dude grooving behind his pc shooting enemies and dodging like hell!
Really neat concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnxqXCwu79k
I didn't want the simple graphics to discourage me from playing this game, and boy am I glad! This is an amazing concept and a very fun game! The whole grid mechanic with the black tiles was really phenomenal, I really liked it! I truly don't believe there was anything wrong with the game, just elements you can improve. For example, design-wise, I would like to see a simple mechanic that stops the player from just keeping his mouse button down to shoot everywhere. Like an overheat bar, or finite ammo that you can pickup in the level. Something that simple can add a whole new layer of strategy to your game! As J.W. from Vlambeer mentioned "if you put a button on your game [...] give someone a reason to not press it". Other than that, I think you have a great, fun and innovative game on your hands, that I really enjoyed playing! Great job! :D
