Wish the mouse movement was a little less sluggish, but nevertheless a great entry...good job!

Haha, my friend started playing this and got addicted...played for like an hour, and then hit a bug (died just before spawn, but let his body drift, sold loot just when his dead body passed over spawn, which reset his health and he couldn't restart).
Lol, anyway, I think the fact that you kept a non-indie hardcore gamer entertained for so long warrants mention.
I also enjoyed your time lapse.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
Thanks! I ended up with 2 hours to do the AI because my body insisted on sleeping (bah!), so it's pretty basic...there's 3 variations: balanced, defence, offence -- I spent some time making sure their growth patterns stayed under control and fixing the most embarrassing bug.
I spent 39 out of the 48 hours working on this =)
I'm glad you loved the music and graphics!
Oh man, this is my first entry into Ludum Dare I assumed using free-to-use music would be OK (evidently I don't know how to make my own music)...checked the rules and I see that isn't allowed.
Um, I'll have to upload a version with no music tomorrow...
May I direct you to the above post =)
And thank you.
Thank you.
I haven't removed the music yet, as I'm not at my PC until tomorrow, so I'm not sure why it didn't work. But that's OK. You can manually open to audio files if you want to hear it though ;D
I was hoping to add a tutorial but didn't have time; I wanted to highlight that unlocking cells acts as a resource production multiplier.
Thanks for playing!
Thank you =)
I plan to, thank you =)
I have also now uploaded 2 separate versions, with and without music.
Time really is a killer for a game like this! Need LD I am going to lower the scope of my entry =)
Thank you!
The UI has a lot of features, as do the technicalities, but I feel like I didn't get to add enough features to the gameplay itself.
@PS, I might need to reconsider my site design (it's extremely new)...but I like it lol xD
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for playing; I agree with your flaws! I've got lots to fix and improve upon. Another 48 hours would have helped a lot ;D
By the way, this Ludum Dare version of Volatile was featured on Game Maker Blog @ http://gamemakerblog.com/2010/12/23/game-review-volatile-matthew-bowden/
Haha, crazy and random, nice work.
I think I will make the still-menu texts fade quicker, seems to be a common complaint.
Thank you.
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I agree the AI could have used some more variation - I was intent on adding flying enemy ships, however I didn't have enough time in the end so I settled for the variations I could make with the weapons and AI I had already coded.
The game was certainly build in a way that encouraged a slower pace. While it had action elements, I did want the focus to be on the story so the gameplay had to reflect that. The point of not allowing turning while stopped is because, frankly, encouraging players to stop would disrupt the game tactics I want to encourage. However, I can understand why that might be wanted (much like backwards movement, also purposely restricted).
In regard to the story, I did feel like it delivered enough detail, however with the chaotic gameplay running at the same time I think most players will find it difficult to keep track of the whole story as it progresses.
I have created a page to explain fully what the story is about, if anyone is interested (spoilers!) - http://bit.ly/lcTCkP
I'm kind glad it felt like a memory...it was meant to be the character's self-conscience, and while I can understand it might have felt like "grind to unlock the next part", it wasn't my intention to offer the player a chance to alter the outcome. Granted, it's more like a straightforward story rather than a choose-your-own adventure.
Anyway thanks again for the feedback, and I hope you enjoyed the game =)
Thanks for the feedback =)
Thanks for playing, nilstastic :D
I appreciate the feedback TellusE, I agree with your points. Thanks for playing :)
Thanks for the positive comments.
Visually attractive, and overall very simple. But, I liked it. The sounds effects helped build a little mood at least. Good work! :)
I was a bit confused about whether the wood/stone/humans I was adding was actually doing anything, so I felt the gameplay was a bit lacking. But, I liked the concept of the worlds interacting being useful to each other. Visuals were good, music was decent. Overall, a pretty good job :)
Wasn't really sure how I was meant to be interacting with the game...seems nice though?
I liked it. The particles were pretty good and it was challenging without being too hard...the tutorial helped ease you into the game play smoothly and the interface was decently constructed. Excellent job overall, especially for your first LD entry!
No problem. Hope to see you at LD 24!
I really loved this interpretation of theme. It was quite beautiful. Great work!
Nice play mechanic and visuals. Some more depth would be good of course :) Good job overall.
Kinda fun, could be fleshed out into an interesting game :)
This was really cool. A simple concept but a good concept. Great use of theme, and overall a memorable game - congratulations!
Pretty good! A little laggy in Firefox (latest v) but definitely playable...nice effects, good physics, and enough lasers to keep it exciting :)
Gorgeous visuals. I suck at controlling games like this but seems pretty content heavy for an LD entry. Great job!
I thought it looked nice but I didn't enjoy it much...frustrating deaths really got to me. The occasionally glitchy platform mechanics broke the immersion a bit for me too. But, overall I liked it - good work! :)
Unexpected! Cool concept and decent execution. Good job overall.
Last minute rating, but it was quite good! I liked the concept.
Weird, but kinda cool.
Was kind of satisfying! Not sure if the theme integration was too strong but who cares, I have a combo to top! Good job.
I don't think I really "got" this game. I clicked 2 things and then my money never seemed to go above 105 and I couldn't do anything? If it was faster paced it might feel more interactive at least.
The visuals were fitting, and so was the music. Overall, the gameplay let it down a bit for me personally, but a decent entry nevertheless!
Pretty interesting concept, great execution. Visuals were nice and music was fitting - overall a great job.
Really good! I think these small, contained environments are a great interpretation of the theme. Interesting and pretty :)
Great mood, and nice presentation. While I normally prefer sandbox worlds, I did feel a bit lost without purpose. Good job overall :)
Way too hard for me. Not a fan of this type of game :(
The control screen flew past so I spent a few seconds confused, but then figured it out. Decent interpretation of the theme, and audio track was nice. Overall, good! :)
I lol'd at the tank on top of a skycraper. Overall, kinda fun. Sound effect was very annoying though!
Can't say it was particularly engaging but I am an ASCII lover so it was nice anyway :)
Haha, seemed like a pretty big world!
If the action was a bit more satisfying this would probably be a lot of fun! Good job overall.
Pretty impressive for the time frame. Nice visual style :D Good job overall.
Simplistic, but visually appealing. Gameplay mechanic wasn't too fun to play with, but the theme usage was fairly good.
Really lacked direction, and on top of that the shadow engine made it very easy to become disorientated.
A bit glitchy, and something tells me you didn't make all of these resources in 48 hours.
Very odd game! Feels like some extra polish would go a long way. Interesting concept nevertheless.
Great first time entry! The random generation resulted in a lot of good content. Visuals are fitting and gameplay was bug free. Congratulations!
Simplistic, but decently presented. I can't say I enjoyed your choice in audio though :)
I felt like the gameplay needed a little bit more depth to be enjoyable, but I could see this developing.
Good job overall.
Good mood, I liked the visual style. Play mechanics weren't too bad either. Seemed like a nice prototype overall, good job!
A bit slow, but not bad overall. Audio was nice.
Refuses to load for me :( Firefox latest v.
Turned out quite nicely. I did actually get stuck in the ground as I approached the end of the level though! Good job mate.
