LD38 — A Small World

UFO in a box of bricks by maartene 2017-05-08T10:38:59Z

Phenomenal music! I also like it, that you took your time to include X-BOX 360 controls, should have done it in my game too. I didn't knew, that it would work so well in WebGL. The low poly objects work pretty well and together with the blocky shots the graphics look quite consistent. All in all a really good game and a funny way of using the unity-physics.

Well done!

Humanity Simulator by RabbitTortoise 2017-05-06T12:07:40Z

Interesting game. Unfortunatly, it didn't run well on my computer, but it was somehow playable. As some others already mentioned, the pollution rate is a little too fast. The theme, graphics and the cubeworld are really cool. I agree with @altron that a zoom function would have been nice.

Cool game with a very unique concept. Great work!

Lottery: you judge them I judge you by doppelgunner 2017-05-05T13:38:49Z

Not only "done" but well done! The mechanics, the interpretation of the theme, even the mood of your game is perfect. In some cases it was quite easy for me to discard one of the two people but at some point it became hard and depressing to judge humans just by their profession and behaviour during the voting. Only problem with the game is, as you already know, the rating at the end. Without your explanation, it is impossible to understand.

All in all one of the most meaningful games I have played on ld38 so far and I can tell, that I am really astounded. Great work!

Starstruck Ducky by HuvaaKoodia 2017-05-09T13:43:07Z

The concept of the game is fine, the graphics are well done and really cute... but... the outcome of the dialogs is way to RNG for me. In my first playthrough I unlocked both higher tier people (or ducks) after three and five days and lost in the end, because they didn't answered the phone for the next three days. At the last day one of them finally picked up, but since it was my very last action (seventh day evening) I asked him for bringing me together with the VIP... and failed. My second and third try went even worse. It just felt like I hadn't enough control ower my own destiny in this game.

Anyway, the game has its own charm and again, I like the concept and art. Nicely done!

SUPER METROARIO by puppetmaster 2017-05-14T20:17:48Z

Nice game. I like your interpretation of the theme. Since I am a real fan of metroidvania-like games, I had a real good time playing yours. I was a little confused at first, because you said, that your game has gamepad controls, but obviously you have to bind them before using (should be mentioned somewhere). Well in the end I did find out and played through the whole game with my x-box360 controller (works pretty well!).

Thanks for your contribution.

OLDDOG by wischutz 2017-05-07T10:37:45Z

The graphic and music of this game is quite good, but... this game seems to lack of gameplay? I ended up keeping the right arrowkey pressed and I was hammering the "z"-key, to get my highscore. By the way, on my german keyboard the "z" and "y" is switched, so the controls weren't very intuitiv. Evenso this is not your fault, you could think about changing the controls to some more common keys like "ctrl", "shift" etc... (maybe as an alternative binding?).

One more thing: Those image glitches... they were SO COOL!!! They worked out perfectly for the mood and gave a surreal touch to the whole scene, which is perfect, because the intense violence and blood is a little upsetting in my opinion. A game with less pointless violence would have pleased me more, but I might just be the wrong guy for your game.

ToweRealm by firellon 2017-05-04T08:02:53Z

Even so the game is and feels quite unfinished, I really enjoyed to play it. Especially the dialogs were quite funny. I like it how you give the player the opportunity to say rude things and even raise the conflict with other factions instead of calming them down.

Unfortunately, when I visited the king, the elevator down didn't worked again, so the game got stuck at that point, but this might have been the end to the game so far anyway. And those enemies in the basement seem to be able to hit you, but you don't lose any health?

Anyway you created an amazing prototype with an interesting plot and great dialogs. I would have loved to see more of the story and many more dialogs, but you obviously ran out of time. Nevertheless you did a great job in those 72 hours!

Shapeshifter: The King of A Small World by Rixud 2017-05-09T12:58:55Z

A cute game. I got stuck in the same hole as @zorg at first, but then I luckily found out, how to use these elevator streams. I think it is hard to find out, that you can hold space as a bee and float upward these streams. I would suggest, that you try to teach this mechanic to the player by inserting a spot where you definitely need this right after you got the bee powerup. The easiest way would be, to put the bee powerup in a hole with one of these elevators, so the player cant escape any other way. I also think that the ground-check needs some bugfixing as others already mentioned. And one last point: It felt a little complicated to switch the forms with the numberkeys. Since my laptop doesn't have a numpad I had to use the left hand for both, movement and shapeshifting.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun to play and finish your game. The graphics where cute, the shapeshifting idea is nice. I really like your contribution!

Inter-Tidal Snail Breeder Deluxe by uvwar 2017-05-09T13:17:07Z

Funny idea. Unfortunately I couldn't even survive past the third wave, due to the short lifespan of my snails. In my opinion it could have been a little longer and the water should stay a little less long.

Apart from that the graphics are really great. I like the blured visual effect, while the water is there. Well done!

Little Fortune Planet by Flaterectomy 2017-05-16T07:21:05Z

Impressive game, I like the concept alot. Unfortunatly I took the "water world"-card as the very first and totally screwed my planet right from the start. Most of the following card-effects dropped down to the infinite ocean and never appeared on my planets surface (like any "star coffie" buildings). It would have been cool, to see more of the actual outcome of the different catastrophes except from flickering water with some white and red spots. In my opinion, the effects of some cards should be reduced, to keep a minimum of functioning world intact, at least in the first few minutes.

Appart from that, nice concept, very nice art and sound. Good job!

Tiny Tily Tile World by spacewarp 2017-05-07T11:25:14Z

The graphics are awesome. They remind me of crinkled paper. I stopped playing, when 95 percent of the planet was covered with at least tents. It took me some time to reach that point but it absolutely worthed my time, since the mechanics are pretty well done, too. Haven't played many ld38 games that look and feel so well crafted as this on.

Thank you so much for creating and sharing your game!

D4RK and the Small Worlds by abhimonk 2017-05-07T08:30:13Z

The game is quite nice. I have tested and finished it with my XBox360-Controller and, as you allready suspected, the keymap is kind of glitchy. Attacking is on the lower key (A), jumping on the right (B). The big problem comes with the dash. It is triggered by the select/back-button (back) and is almost unusable due to the fact, that your left thumb is allready occupied by the left analog-stick. the shoulder-buttons and triggers are not working.

All in all a nice platformer with good animations. I really like the fact, that you have included some music and sound. Only problem I had is, that I think those moons have annoyingly much health. They should have died after three hit allready. It kind of angered me, that I had to back off after the first three hits, to dodge their attacks before finishing them off.

Anyway, a nice game that you made.

DaPrince by stepp 2017-05-03T18:59:10Z

Actually the most beautiful graphics, I have seen in all the ld38 games, I have played so far. I actually did figure out, how to aim the shots, but it is rather difficult, because you can't see the line to shot at until you are already pulling, so the direction of your shots is not random, but definitely hard to aim.

For anyone interested: To aim a shot you have to stand at a specific location relative to the pulled tree. If you stand on the far right side of the tree, then you will pull and throw it in a flat angle to the right. Standing in the middle of a tree will throw it in a high angle upward and so on.

Small Planet Tycoon by Querk 2017-05-16T06:06:14Z

Nice game! I like the simple programmer art and the gameplay workes really well. I had a small problem with the resolution. I used my native screen resolution, and didn't found the erase-button at first, because it was hidden by the taskbar. It appeared just when I hit the fullscreen-button, so I was a little confused at the start.

Anyway, this is a very well made compo-game! Thanks!

Sir Shrink-A-Lot by narve 2017-05-06T10:14:25Z

This game is really good. But one thing: It seems to me, that it is not mainly about size but much more about speed and jumping width. The medium size felt a little useless to me because you can't neather jump nor crush boxes.

I played it with my X-Box360 controller and I think, that the slow size-switching felt even slower with it. Maybe the triggers are a bad choice? Maybe it would be better to bind the shoulder-buttons instead (or both)?

The tilebased level with different difficulties is awesome. After a few tries I even reached the more harder parts. Really good work. It gave me a good time.

Mind's Eye by Kosmo 2017-05-04T07:29:56Z

It was a nice experience to play your game. I really like your interpretation of the theme. Thumbs up for that unique idea.

la petite isle by ramza 2017-05-05T13:16:45Z

A short but solid contribution, that totally worthed my time. The simple music and sound works pretty well and together with the cute animations of your character the game created a nice and peaceful mood while playing. All in all the game as a whole feels very consistent, evenso it is a little short.

Thanks for sharing your game!

Dinonaut: Defender of Celestial Dwarves by zzcalvinzz 2017-05-19T07:37:26Z

Simple and funny. Sometimes the game kills you due to pure RNG with some bad asteroid placement, but hey, it's a jam game. I like the simple art of the game. Especially the player sprite is really cute.

Great little game. Good job!

Planet Bash by killerkun 2017-05-06T14:13:33Z

Really cool soundtrack that perfectly assists the mood in this game and maked me want to lay all the buildings on that planet to waste (especially when the people start to shoot at me). It has great pixel art to.

A simple game with few but very effective elements, that create an intensiv mood. Nice!

[BOXAVERSE] by Fran Segura 2017-05-07T12:38:13Z

Pretty nice art style and nice music. The game gave me a good time, although the "riddles" were sometimes confusion. I didn't got the idea how to get my people to gather the right combination until I used everything with everything, evenso I found the clue very early (sorry for being a little cryptically, I'm trying to avoid spoilers).

All in all it is a cute little adventure and a very nice contribution. Good work!

Skylands by huminaboz 2017-05-06T15:29:32Z

Nice puzzle-game with rather simple and easy understandable mechanics. The graphics remind me of so many mobile-games and also the mouse-only controls. It would be cool, if you could click tiles two or three spots away just to move there. It would make the gameplay a little more fluently.

By the way it seems to me, that I have found a bug. When I used a sunflower to jump to another sunflower I sometimes stopped on the second one and could continue from there. And yet another question: is it intended, that you can finish the last level with only one ice-seed and the five sunflower-seeds (could be due to the mentioned bug)?

All in all a nice little puzzle-game and a great contribution! Thanks for your game!

Cartography by Zorg 2017-05-06T09:30:10Z

The tilebased level-generator is really amazing, also you don't need to understand the whole levelstructure to beat the game. Since the walls under the towers reduce your possible passages and leave only few ways open, you can find and activate at least the first four towers just by trying every possible direction. Anyway the mechanics are astounding and the 3D-graphics are great. It's definitely worth a try.

Shrimp Tank by slash_random 2017-05-06T12:49:26Z

Thanks for all your comments. Here are some comments of mine to some specific problems that were mentioned.

Camera: Yes the camera didn't worked out, as it was intended. It runs ahead with the players speed-vector and whenever you change your direction (especially when you jump and drop down afterwards) the camera rushes around and doesn't show you, what's going on above. Needs some tweaking.

The controls: There are only few buttons but I should have mentioned them somewhere (just forgot about it). You can move "left" and "right", with ether "a" and "d" or "left" and "right" arrowkey, and jump hitting "space". You can use your jump after each second to swim upward or damp your fall, since there is no need to be grounded. I will add this to the itch.io discription.

Feedback on eating: It is missing simply because I ran out of time. It was planned to play a simple eating animation whenever you grab some food. It was not planed to add any sort of food progress feedback except your own grows, but it is a good point I will think about.

Graphical bug when dying: Yes I am aware of it and I will try to fix it.

One last thing: Sometimes the fishes get to close to the ground just due to pure RNG. This can lead to undeserved death, so the fish movement needs and will get some tweaking. But I will wait until the end of the votings before I update my game again.

Thanks again to @narve, @zorg, @rabbittortoise, @killerkun, @toonteamj, @huminaboz and @kosmo for your comments and constructive critique.

Snow Dream by B0cheChaS 2017-05-07T13:25:39Z

Well, the concept is a little too simple for my taste. Controls, animation and music are fine, but I would have expected more variety in gameplay. I cant imagine playing this for more than five minutes.

Sorry for being a little harsh here, still your art style is astounding, it just doesn't work to well as a game for me personal. Maybe it is just so because I am not into this sort of games.

Small Planet by ZebraInFlames 2017-05-09T13:29:08Z

Aww man those enemies are way to hard for me. Nice little game, but in my case the AI always wins. For me it is quite hard to hit them four times before being killed. A higher rate of fire, a slower AI, more healthpoints for me or some other methods to lower the difficulty would be needed, to let me win a round. Maybe you want to consider something like that as an optional setting for beginners?

Anyway it was fun and I played it more than once. Good work!

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-05-18T21:37:01Z

I like the game, its concept and the graphics with the dark and moody colours. The puzzle mechanic is really cool. Unfortunately I could only solve two of them. The third was absolutely impossible for me to find, which was disapointing. Either I completely missed one or more pillars at all or the hints where way too vague. Also the controls are hard to use. Even if you know the spot, you need to go to, it is hard to reach, because you often have to turn away from any pillar and walk blindly alongside of it. Some sort of straving movement would be super helpful and I strongly advice, to add a key for moving backwards.

Anyway, your game is still great and I enjoyed playing it. Well done and thanks for the astounding contribution.

Wandering Planet by jlet 2017-05-14T19:29:01Z

Pretty solid game. I like the music and the easy to understand gameplay. Actually I found two problems. First, while you are growing, the asteroids become extremely tiny and hard to see, also they still seem to hurt you, when you colide with them. The more serious problem comes with the controls. I used the "ctrl"-key as some sort of map-function, while playing. The problem: Whenever I accidentally pressed "ctrl" and "d" at the same time, I triggered a shortcut for creating a new bookmark in my browser and the game shutted down (I am using firefox). Luckily you already made a workaround as you implemented the arrowkeys as an alternative binding, so this is fine. However in my opinion the player should be warned about this issue (at least in the discription would be nice).

Slightly Angry Max by Takusan 2017-05-02T16:05:00Z

Well, the game mechanics work and the opening scene was pretty nice (reminded me of smashTV), but it's a real shame, that you neither made the graphics nor the music by yourself. Therefore, the game lacks of individuality which should be super important in my opinion. Anyway, thanks for sharing your game with us.

Stable Orbit by mrspeaker 2017-05-06T16:17:08Z

Short and funny. I like the minimalistic gameplay, sound, graphics... all of it. The game feels pretty complete, and it was a nice experience. A really nice game!

The Deific's Guide to Creating, Exploiting, and Destroying Pocket Worlds by Smiling Cat Entertainment 2017-05-09T08:56:18Z

Very astounding game. Unfortunately I had some really bad performance issues on my crappy computer even with graphic settings set to "fastest", so I haven't finished it and stopped after discovering only 8 different elements.

One question came to my mind: Is there a way to open up the manual again, while playing? There should be a way, because the last page with the table of elements would be very handy at the start, especially when you already have created three of the basic elements (fire, earth, air) and you want to create the one that's missing.

Anyway, graphics, sound and especially the interesting crafting mechanic works well and would have made me play your game much longer, if my framerate wouldn't have broken down.

Very good game that you created in the short time of a compo!

Orbitunes by ColeSlaughter 2017-05-15T08:18:58Z

Not much to say but nice work and nice idea. After two minutes of playing I had a nice little piece of music, evenso it sounded really random.

Good job!

Every Man's Sky by blaster391 2017-05-09T12:24:12Z

Interesting concept. I like the idea of creating a mmo as a ludum dare contribution. It is even nice, how the players are using your game. Some of their planet constellations and names where really creative.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to share our creativity.

Guacamole! by oskanberg 2017-05-03T18:39:09Z

I don't know what's going on or what the point is in this game... but it make's me laugh so hard anyway.

Formigables by Studim 2017-05-18T11:56:31Z

As @erik-brunnstrom said, you seem to have put some great effort in your project, but many of the features are quite unclear to the player. This becomes even worse, because some images are switched around (the labels for the building options of the queen are completely wrong. You have to click the worker ant to build a spy). As far as I can tell, the fighter-ants do not have any use yet and there is no final goal to reach. Also the spy mechanic seems to be broken.

I think, this could have been a cool game, if it would have been finished. It is a pitty, because your graphics are outstanding. Good work anyway!

Smell World by sgadrat 2017-05-18T07:01:42Z

Really nice! I like the graphics and the interpretation of the theme. The discreet humor worked out very well for me. The music is a little repetetive, but it is nice, that you have made and implemented some. All in all I like your game. Good work!

Poor little mouse... too smart for this world...

Tiny goes on an adventure. by nate_wec 2017-05-19T07:07:20Z

Had the same problem as @impbox. I got stuck and couldn't return the sword. And of course sound would have been super cool. I also would have prefered some sort of relaxing background music. Appart from that, your game is quite solid. I like the cute sprites and the easy to understand gameplay. Anyway, there are some minor tweaks, I would suggest. Maybe you want to consider, to flip the raft around, when you move left as your player character allready does. It looks a bit strange, when your raft rides backwards. Also it would be cool, if you could examine the buyable items and get the description before actually buying them.

All in all your game is quite nice and I enjoyed playing it. Good work and thanks for the contribution!

Arry World by willowblade 2017-05-18T19:26:51Z

As others already mentioned, the graphics are great. The hand drawn sprites make the game really unique and the weird music assists the mood perfectly. Appart from the text scrolling thing, I had another problem with the gameplay. It happend more than once, that I accidentally abborted dialoges by moving a few steps while talking (it happend, when I gave an item without expecting it to work). Maybe a sligthly larger talking-range or a short time of immobilization would have helped me.

Anyway, good job!

Space Donut by OliverPaulson 2017-05-02T15:38:17Z

Quite a nice little game with lot's of potential. But the spawn rate and the damage of the enemies (especially of those shooter guys) is way too high. Even the heavy towers are smoked away in seconds, so at this point, the game feels like it needs alot more balancing. Appart from that graphics and controls feel good so far, even so in my opinion the combination of low resolution pixel art and free rotation always looks a little glitchy. Anyway, good job and thanks for the contribution.
