Simple and cute. The melody's playful, and the graphics have a pretty consistent style. Nice job. :smile: I just wish there was more to see and do.

The art is nice! The mazes I got seemed to always be rather easy, I could almost always just go in the direction of the smell, so every level was very quick. I feel like this game could probably work well with children!
Also, when I tried it in my browser it wouldn't start, pressing the arrows didn't do anything.
Thanks for the nice comments.
Indeed, our artist was on fire. As developers we were working together for the first time and with an engine none of us tried before. It was a lot of fun, but not super efficient. With better organization (we actually had only one day) Smell World would have traps and levels designed to be chalanging, that would make it a game. Currently, it is more a mouse simulator than a game, but the most important thing is intact: we loved making it!
As for the "arrows do not work" problem, there is a thing with itch.io: you must click on the iframe to set focus to the game page. Maybe a simple trick like `getElementById("canvas").focus()` would do the trick. Do somebody has insight?
Okay, good graphics, nice little music loop. Is there a ending in your game? I've done more than 50 levels (I think) and still nothing : it's a little bit repetitive... I was expecting at a cat screemer :cat: but nothing :smile: : how many mazes did you made???
@fouralex Seriously?! I am glad you played so much, but ... After the first, you have seen all that is in the game. It is a (lame) procedural generation of mazes.
Thank you for your endurance :D
Good little game, a bit easy I think as there are no real difficulty to find cheese
The loop is cool but after 10 level it starts to be annoying :p
Good work guys !
@sgadrat Aha, I thought there was an end with the scientists, and I'm really (too much) curious. This is a good procedural generation!
Really pretty graphics! Love the scurrying effect on the little rodent as well. Controls and UI were well-thought-out, except the use of the down arrow which, unless in full-screen mode, gets confused for a scrolling action (this could have been fixed via scripting). Likewise I'd have used different controls to advance past the post-level screen. The cheese pointer animation was awesome. The music suited the game well, although I missed having some sound effects in there as well. The game made good use of the theme. I didn't notice any bugs.
About setting focus for inputs - yes, it should be just document.getElementById("game_drop").contentWindow.focus(); //run this shortly after the page loads
My only gripe is the game doesn't have a lot of depth. Procedural maze generation isn't really special enough to keep me hooked, although it's cool and all. At least give me a counter to let me see how many levels I've completed! This game is crying out for depth to keep me playing. Don't get me wrong - I love a good casual game - but even that implies some light challenge to keep me occupied.
Fun, amusing game though - you can really see you guys had fun making it!
I enjoyed your game, neat hand drawn graphics and a great soundtrack going along with the game :) One thing that might have made the game more interessting would have been some kind of enemy that makes it more challenging on where i can go to reach my goal e.q. to trick them to get to my goal :)
Same as Lars DK already said using the keyboard down key scrolled down the window which was a bit annoying.
Great work in the short amount of time :)
It was SmAAll world,smAAll!! Just kidding :D The name made me laugh. Loved the music and the idea!
Your art is really awesome and I like the idea of following the smell as well! There seems to be a problem with using the arrow keys in Firefox, game won't start there, work's perfect in Chrome, though.
Very nice graphics, and a really cool idea and interpretation of the theme. Music is nice and the levels are fun but simple, perhaps better suited for a younger child. Great work though!
It's cute, sadly it's just so short! That and hitting down kept scrolling my window down.
Really amazing. I love the way you implemented the theme here. I played a lot of levels until I realized that there isn't an end. Exactly like I was a lab rat. Good visuals (that rat) and music too, a little repetitive but it's normal. By the way, I must use Google Chrome because I couldn't start the game in Firefox. I don't know why it doesn't detect the arrow keys at the main menu.
The name of the game made me laugh :wink:
I like the hand painted assets and the wobbly walking animation. Unfortunately, the controls died on me a few times during the game and I couldn't move anymore (sometimes just a few directions, other times the controls gave up completely). I played it in Chrome. Moving in general feels a little stiff, as it is very tile based, with huge tiles.
Overall, a simple maze game with pretty art. :thumbsup:
Nice soundtrack, but kinda repetetive stone textures.
Maybe too easy, more intricate labyrinths and a wider camera area could have made things better.
wow I ate a loooot of cheese :cheese: & that's never a bad thing! a few more sounds woulda been mice... ... & a couple of different 'dissection' cutscene/end of level jokes might have kept me playing even longer. I wish I could sniff out cheese this efficiently irl. well done, congrats!
I dunno if it was just me, but I was expecting this game to take a daaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrk turn partway through. Particularly when I saw the victory screen saying "We'll know after dissection." With the limited field of view, seemingly innocent music, mildly dark victory screen, and semi-realistic artwork (nice job btw) I expected to encounter an unexpected enemy in the game and crap my pants.
Are these mazes procedural-generated? If so that's some neat tech to use for future projects! :) Cool stuff here!
I love the animations of the mouse and the ending made me laugh. :)
Nice and pleasant to play with the cheery music and art. I liked the end of the level image in particular. I found it a bit easy with the arrow telling me where to go though. Overall a nice effort though and probably played more mazes than I expected to. Ha!
I gotta say I am not a fan of the music but I like graphics, its cute. The mazes are bit simple but its random i think which is nice. Overall it felt to short, I wish you had more time for some content.
Interesting idea, but I feel you need more mechanics to make the game really fun, like traps or enemies. Or at least make the map more difficult, like a real maze. The way it is now, it's too easy.
Nice art style!
Wow, that's some really impressive art! I appreciate the use of a more painterly style (so many indie game artists go for a more cartoony look). The simple squash-and-stretch on the mouse as it moves is a great touch. The little splash screen after you finish a maze is super cute.
Unfortunately the mazes are very, very easy, primarily because the arrow provides constant feedback about where to go. After a couple I pretty much just operated on autopilot and it ceased to require any thinking. Is there supposed to be an end, or are they procedurally generated? I eventually got bored and stopped playing.
That ending, what a nice surprise! I tried rebelling on my next run but turns out it's impossible :( The game has much potential and is quite fun. I think it could be even cooler with some more content (i.e. more possibilites for the mouse)
Sorry, on Mac web version does not work for me. Probably keys have different codes. Better to use spacebar or enter to start game. :(
Like you said, it's more a mouse simulator than a game in this actual state. I have to say I'm quite impressed by the level generator you made, but it's sadly not really challenging. You just have to follow the direction of the arrow and that's basically it. It doesn't feel like a labyrinth as the path is clearly indicated. Imo, the game would have been more interesting with a higher camera to see all the map, the mouse and the cheese. Then you could make a real labyrinth with traps etc.. and maybe the cheese could be a trap in itself and the goal would be for the mouse to escape from the mad scientist experiment! (like Portal but with a mouse). Anyway.. the most important thing is that you had fun and managed to create a base for a more polished version. Well done!
Very well done ! I will just repeat what other people said but yes, this too easy, the labyrinth is not really challenging and the music is too repetitive (but I like it and I think it suits very well the game !).
The graphics are good, and the idea too, but the game its a little bit easy because of the indications, if you make it more difficult to find the cheese the game will be perfect ^^
The end is great. :)
The thing I really liked is that you don't see far so you really have to memorize the way if you get stuck. However, the indication helps too much and the maze is not too large and complex, so it doesn't have an effect I would like it to. However, with a few tweaks it could be transformed into a very fun game.
Graphics are very nice. :)
Well done!
I like the art! Cute little game. A bit empty (you just need to reach the cheese) and as people said, too easy.
Since you smell and stuff, it would have been fun if instead of an arrow, you had the puff of smoke/cloud indicate you how close you are to find the cheese instead of an arrow!
Great mouse animation! I love how simple, yet effective, it is.
Nice little game - the graphics stuck out as a highlight. I definitely agree that children would probably love this game. (And that's not a bad thing)
I'm guessing the levels are procedurally generated - you should call that out in the description! That's really cool - keep in mind your audience is mostly fellow game devs. We get why that's cool and worth mentioning.
Nicely done.
We though that it was clear that it is procedurally generated and not such a big deal, especially since it generates low-quality mazes.
For thoose interested (and reading the comments,) the generation is done like that:
``` Fill all the space with walls Place the starting point of the mouse Place the cheesse dig a corridor between the mouse and cheese (stairway pattern, a little random for steps size)
repeat N times: choose a random digged tile choose a random wall tile dig a corridor between both ```
So, here is how NOT to generate a maze :D We kept it because it was functional "enough", it never generates unsolvable levels and we planed to improve it if we had time (we did not had time.)
Really nice! I like the graphics and the interpretation of the theme. The discreet humor worked out very well for me. The music is a little repetetive, but it is nice, that you have made and implemented some. All in all I like your game. Good work!
Poor little mouse... too smart for this world...
Nice simple game. I liked the mouse movement. I think you didn't need to make procedural generated levels. You could have made just two or three static levels but with more challenge and interesting things like the stuff you intended to do with the traps and so. It is generally more important to do one interesting level than to do many not as interesting levels. But still you did great and with the procedural generation done you can now advance your game to the next level :)
Animation is very cool! I love the mouse)
Hi @Sgadrat, a fellow NesDever! Also , hi Mgadrat, and congratulations both! Gorgeous music and a gorgeous pun, I am most impressed! Apologies, i am a little late to vote, however, but look forward to seeing your next endeavor!
