LD38 — A Small World

Space Balls by Dejvo 2017-05-07T21:37:35Z

Loved the graphics, colurful and bright, atoms and photon trail are beautiful. I'm also a fan of the chroma shifting shader, which I immediately noticed in the start screen already :)

As others said, you don't feel you're in great control of the photon, but I think it's right that you can only adjust the trajectory a little. I got to the eye in my first gameplay, and then retried 3 or 4 times without success. It was fun trying to escape the atom, but it lasted too long, and at the end I resigned.

Main reason I wanted to retry is because I was curious of the final picture you see on screen at the end: is it always the same, or you used something like Instagram APIs to pull a random image from your profile every time?

That said, very great entry, I liked a lot.

A small world lost in a big universe by siryakko 2017-05-07T22:04:21Z

Great entry, cute and well done graphics, I absolutely loved the amazing music.

Not much to add, I agree with basically anything positive said by commenters before me :)

Path of the Rabbit by managore 2017-05-01T16:30:08Z

Mmmm, probably the first game of yours I didn't loved instantly. Graphics are great as always, but there are IMHO many issues with the gameplay (mostly already pointed out by other commenters):

- Worlds edges are barely visible at first, you got stuck without any "warning". - 70 tiles are really a lot! I think something around 30/40 can be fairer. - When you got stuck at the edge of the world you just stay there, it can happens in first run that you continue to play without understanding what to do. - The game over at the edges is quite unfair, given how easily you can get to it: maybe if you could stack tiles on the rabbit to make it go "back" on another route it'll be less punishing. Or maybe there could be world wrapping or rabbit bouncing back on the route, but I cannot think a way to avoid the infinite "loops" this solutions can create.

I loved your previous LD entries also because of the high difficulty level (The Sun and Moon, Reap and Death of a Lich), but this one is really too much! :)

Prison Blues by Drury 2017-05-06T23:01:37Z

High mood score. Nice entry. I love pixel art, and animations are nice. Stealth gameplay is quite basic, but it work very well. As many said, I wish it was longer, because I liked the writing and story looks something that can be nicely developed. Good choice of music, bravo.

Surface Tension by mahalis 2017-05-06T23:11:51Z

Amazing graphics for a first-time 3D project! We went 3D for the first time also in our entry, but working with voxel made life simpler for our ex-pixel-artists :)

The torus idea is nice, and it make dodging enemies really challenging. As said by others, maybe the up-down moviment could be more slow.

Unfortunately I'm not really good at it, and I'm ashamed to post my highest score XD

Wee Planet by radmccool 2017-05-01T17:35:38Z

Crash on start for me too, as @Aurelian said. Here are my specs:

- Laptop with external HDMI attached - Windows 10 64 bit - Intel Dual Core i5 CPU M 460 @ 2.53GHz - AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series

Maybe the crash dump/report file created by Unreal can help you:

- [CrashContext.runtime-xml](http://lorenzo.cloud/ld/38/weeplanet/CrashContext.runtime-xml) - [UE4Minidump.dmp](http://lorenzo.cloud/ld/38/weeplanet/UE4Minidump.dmp)

Curses and Coconuts by testlab 2017-05-01T17:12:06Z

Good entry, it fits the theme and has nice cartoon-ish graphics. Low-poly models may look basic at first, but I find them great, they give the game a coherent style, something that I see it's really hard to accomplish for games developed in such a small time. Also, the appearing/disappearing-in-the-sand idea is very funny, and it works very well.

IMHO before adding new gameplay mechanics like combo, dodging or an ending, the diagonal attack should be fixed (it was extremely difficult for me to position myself facing an opponent coming from a diagonal, I almost died for this reason only), and it should be possibile to attack while walking (without stopping) to make the game more "fluid" overall.

A Bombtastic World by dennyrocketdev 2017-05-01T17:46:24Z

Nice game, the idea is nice and can be developed further in my opinion. Great aesthetics and good sound effects.

As for @mr-chelnoque, it runs a little laggy on my laptop. I don't know if it can be related to performances, but smashing buttons quickly get my character in a state in which it is positioned in the middle of two tiles: the games continue to work correctly most of the times, but it's hard to tell in which tile the player is.

Beware The Idiots by Gris 2017-05-07T20:52:10Z

Liked the sperm graphic (simple but effective, loved the smooth tail animation), nice gameplay. Sounds effect are nice, but their volume is too high compared to music, especially when they add up when you quickly kill lot of spermatozoons. Got 445 on my first try, as others said maybe the hit box is a little too large.

The Little Llama by Seyvaq Singh 2017-05-01T16:47:54Z

A Llama's puzzle games in voxels just like [ours](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/llamas-world), ahahahah!

I enjoyed played a bunch of level, interesting mechanics. I liked the "zen garden" atmosphere, probably thanks to the nice music, congrats.

Just a little suggestion, if I can: especially in the first levels (i.e. just when you need to understand it) it's hard to spot the water, because the blue tint it's too similar to the dark green grass. I got it just after trying to walk on it without success :)

Batter Bros. by fanatrick 2017-05-07T21:53:37Z

Really liked your game, 5/5 theme and graphic for me. Suuuuuper nice **hi-bit pixel art**, nice pastel color palette, mega attention to details, I was impressed when I noticed the visual distortion at the edges of the sphere and how curated was the physics of the water.

I won on first try, but I think because the AI made a couple of very bad mistakes. Anyway I really enjoyed playing it. Yeah, like many said, gameplay is short and not much innovative, but being innovative it's really hard, and I prefer short games when I have to try a lot of them :)

Easily in my top entries for this LD, bravissimi!

Smell World by sgadrat 2017-05-01T17:36:55Z

Maybe too easy, more intricate labyrinths and a wider camera area could have made things better.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

The Dark Castle by Joror 2017-12-17T21:36:00Z

I never played a text adventure, I liked it! I re-played many time (I think I unlocked something like 8 or 9 endings), but I never managed to complete my goal. Looks fairly hard. Maybe I'll retry later.

Graphics are nice, I don't know how exactly, but they perfectly convey the sense of "lord's castle, darkness, evil, mystery". Music is nice too: the long dark ambient drones are just what a game like this needs, not more. Writing is excellent; I'm not a native English speaker, but it was all clear and I also learned a couple of new words.

Just one suggestion: it'd be nice to have some sound effects for the most important action you choose.

I'm not sure I got the theme here, maybe the stats penalty (the more, the worse)? If that's it, maybe it's a little bit weak.

Marching Band Parade by fancy89 2017-12-09T14:54:47Z

@potti thanks! @fancy89 used MagicaVoxel to create city's assets, and she assembled them in Unity.

Larry Kroft and the Temple of Booze by thomz12 2017-12-09T16:58:39Z

Lol, Larry Kroft! I really enjoyed the game. Levels are nicely designed, with optional areas that make exploring fun. Despite my willingness to complete the whole level (are there more after "Level 0"?), I had to surrender at the spike+arrows traps + moving platform section. There's something wrong in the way Larry moves and jumps while on the platform. Maybe that was not too hard per-se, but restarting from the beginning is not fun :( Having a couple of checkpoints in between would have been an easy and appreciated addition!!!

3D art is wonderful, much above the average for a LD entry! Especially the walls of the temple itself, very great execution. Maybe mummies are hard to quickly spot in some area, but just making them whiter instead of brownish will solve this.

Santa's Factory by SaraMartins 2017-12-09T17:16:20Z

Nice graphics, nice music and sound effect.

I can see the use of the theme.

As the others said, the biggest problem in this game are controls. I also tried the fixed version, but it doesn't change much. Maybe a crosshair in the center of the screen could help. I really spent long time before I noticed the white glowing and be able to pick up presents.

ARTIFACTS by Fran Segura 2017-12-17T22:15:35Z

Nice entry. I enjoyed playing it, but I can't make the end.

Great pixel art for the player, the exteriors and enemies (I particularly liked the big blue one that chase you in the fast run scene); the corridors instead feels a little too flat imho.

Platforming controls are sufficiently tight (I used mouse + keyboard). Maybe there could be some snapping for the rope, so you can attach rings also when not fired exactly towards them. Also, I couldn't get how to reach the platform in the left room after the really first pit: there's a ring on the upper floor, but I didn't succeed in using it to jump on.

I can see the theme (more artefacts means more ghosts, harder) but I think it’s a little bit weak.

Dashing Delivery by Mars 2017-12-09T15:15:28Z

Graphics are nice, music and sound (voice) effects fits very well! XD

As @adrien-dittrick said, there's something wrong with the mouse aiming control, I can't get if it moves too fast or too accelerated, but this together with exaggerated motion blur and presents' falling curve, made aiming really difficult. It was impossible for me to not waste too many presenst. Like, I'm able to slip in 1 out of 10 :)

BloXy! by sajid 2017-12-09T16:31:48Z

Original gameplay, I can't remember of games I played onto the inside walls of a cube.

The description says your bullets can hurt you, but to me they can't, fortunately! Also, I can't get what red cubes are: the description talks about blue one (you) and white ones (obstacles). I find confusing not be able to see the enemies at the beginning.

I suggest you to opt-out from audio votes, since I see there's no audio effects or music in the game :)

Lead Arrow by Pile of Leaves 2017-12-09T15:39:46Z

Cool, I enjoyed it! Pro and cons IMHO:

`+` Nice minimal visuals, reminds of old vector graphics but with a more "modern" color palatte. `+` Clear UI. It's easy to check the number of arrows left since the indicator cleverly follows the player. And shoot range indication is much appreciated :) `+` Arcade sound effects and enemies buzzing (that became some sort of background music) adds to the "old arcade" experience. `+` Correct interpretation of the theme. `+` Enemies AI, their movement makes aiming enjoyable and not boring, and it requires good reaction times without being frustrating.

`-` You should start with 2 or 3 arrows instead of one. Why? Because at first you don't get what happens when you try to fire the first enemy only to explode yourself! XD `-` Missing top score. I enjoyed the game and I played multiple matches, it'd be nice to know if I beat myself without having to remember how much I last previously. `-` The right-mouse button attack is an interesting way to unload for who is good at aiming, but it'd be great if it had a different "attack effect" from the standard one. I 100% assumed it'll shoot remaining arrows in multiple direction, shotgun style like @oskarolausson said.

FlameOver by fancy89 2020-04-23T09:19:27Z

@notapixelstudio Thanks for the detailed feedback, much appreciated!

> Is the main character a monkey?

It's supposed to be the character from our first game, [SleepOver](http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=51345), but yeah, only we knew

> where did he find an umbrella? where does the thing on the top right bring?

Well, obviously there's a cabin full of ombrellas up there.

> I don’t think the mouse is the right device to be playing with

We chose the mouse since it was faster to implement and allows for faster reaction time, in our opinion. There are some comment appreciating it, so I guess it's subjective.

> It’s weird actually that wood just spawn, randomly on the island, wouldn’t be better to get the guy make some wood from the palms?

Absolutely, we agree on that. Having more time, we surely had worked on a crafting mechanic (i.e. you need to spend some times under the palms to get it) or at least make the spawning position less random (i.e. near palms). Also, we'd loved to make the player carry more than one stick, or be able to drop it if he suddenly need the umbrella.

> Sometimes is really unfair though when wind and water attack together, also because Fantozzi’s rainy cloud is really slow so you need to stay there and defend the fire (I think the rain is stronger than the wind in shutting the fire down)

Yes, the longer you last, the less fair it is. Maybe with more time on our hands we could have developed a system to avoid simultaneous events (which currently are randomized with decreasingly interval as time passes). But we also liked the idea that the game couldn't last much long, we find it appropriate for the quick runs the voters expect here, while trying many many games one after the other

> Sounds: A chill music would have been a really good fit :( . I had to turn the sound down because the chill, cozy sound of the fire mixed up in an the high volume of wind, and annoying chirping of the birds.

We had a [calypso-themed music](https://freesound.org/people/4barrelcarb/sounds/365361/) in-game, but we decided to remove it since 1) it's not chill and 2) it covered much of the nice sounds we used unless mixed at a volume so low that made it pointless. Other here appreciated, so I guess it's personal. However we are opting-out of audio ratings, since all we used is taken from public domain.

> I did 98.4 on the first try. And 129 in the second.. Is it… good ?

We usually score around 200, but we played it a lot. Pro tips: 1) use your time before the storms (~100) to prepare for them: keep the fire at max and avoid picking up nearby sticks if possible, go for the further ones; 2) it's true that clouds damage the fire a lot more than wind initially, but wind is increasingly more powerful as time passes!

Thanks again for the comment!

Hell Yeah! by ryzy27 2020-04-22T20:24:24Z

Liked graphics and audio a lot. I managed to survive day 2 in my second run, but day 3 is too much diffult, IMHO. I'm not sure the minigames maps are generated so there's always at least one possible move, are they? If not, maybe the best strategy on day 3 is to quicly enter and exit minigames until a possible match is available?

Feed The Slime by PythooonUser 2020-04-22T20:34:13Z

I'm on Linux right now, so thanks for the WebGL build, worked perfectly! Nice little game, I enjoyed the graphics a lot, best I've seen as of now, I have a weakness for low-poly  Could be a little longer, maybe with hidden sticks and/or randomly placed, so players could enjoy a second run. The ending, well, I absolutely didn't see it coming, ahahahah, well done!

THE PATH by theblackfrog 2020-04-22T18:40:43Z

Thank god you made checkpoints! Very difficult, but I managed to get him to the end :)

Can you look after my plants? by the_martijn 2020-04-22T19:53:33Z

I lold at the animated intro, ahahah. Extremely difficult, I enjoyed playing it a lot, stayed longer than previous games, but had to give up after 5 or 6 runs. I unlocked info for four of the plants, but it doesn't look they're always observed. Maybe the plants start in a random point of their watering cycle?
