LD24 — Evolution

Untitled Tower Game by chuchino 2012-08-29T00:52:00

I really really liked this game... up until the level where you get the slash ability, which has a jump I have determined is impossible. Pity, I was really getting into it...

OS: Evolution by zatyka 2012-08-29T01:28:00

That was a lot of fun. Reminded me a lot of Portal, for obvious reasons. The control scheme was interesting, but in my opinion, deflecting the bullets is too finicky.

Screaming Fish Growing Appendages by nevercare 2012-08-28T04:06:00

I kinda like the fish sprite.

Epic Pong Evolution by Clockwork Coder's Development Team 2012-08-29T04:08:00

C'mon, pong? Really?

Mutate by JPatrick 2012-08-29T01:05:00

An okay game. One of my problems was I did not know what the mutations were actually doing, since they weren't labeled. Also, on my opinion, the direction of shooting should have depended on where the mouse is relative to the player instead of the last direction the player moved in. Finally, a small design tip: the animation of the player and zombies is choppy, while the bullets move smoothly; you should pick one style or the other, because they don't blend well.

Survival of the Fittest by Sidnoea 2012-08-29T02:54:00

Extra lives was one of the things I was too rushed to add... sorry lol.

Graphics are overrated by kiwi 2012-08-28T12:11:00

Interesting idea; you've earned the "you tried" award. Maybe it's just my computer, but every couple of seconds, the game locks up completely.

Grow by Certainty 2012-08-29T02:52:00

A very creative, interesting game. The visual style is rather pleasing. The enemies are extremely annoying though, since they always take the shortest possible route to you, and are very difficult to hit with your bombs, especially if you're attack in numbers. Overall, a solid game.

Sweepers! by williamwhitacre 2012-08-29T00:23:00

Okay, this is definitely one of the most creative games I've played. Pros: a lot of fun, very original, reflects the theme well. Cons: movement is annoyingly difficult, and some of the enemies are way overpowered. Overall, I really liked this game.

Rock-Parer-Scissors War by Vladp995 2012-08-29T00:32:00

This was kind of fun. The concept is cute, but I quickly lost interest. I don't really see how it matched the theme. It was funny as hell to watch though.

The Brewer by Maikeroppi 2012-08-29T00:55:00

Not the worst game ever. It doesn't show evolution, but it would make a decent time waster if I was really bored.

Writespace by blinry 2018-08-18T00:48:08Z

This isn't just a great jam entry, this is a great game, period. So creative, so original, really tight level design... I really really loved it. Amazing job.

Floating Island by Echo Team 2018-08-18T01:13:20Z

It was nice for maybe a minute or two, but even for an idle game, it's pretty lacking. I like that the island is randomized, at least.

The Jaws Of This World by Max Cahill 2018-08-19T02:07:47Z

(I played the current post-compo version.)

Well, you already know this, but there's almost nothing to do (unless I missed a lot of stuff?), so I think this actually counts as "not a game". The graphics aren't bad, but the choppy camera was very hard to look at. I like the wall-climbing mechanic, but I really wish there was a way to make my character stop climbing after I accidentally bump into a wall. The controls felt off; for example, after digging through a wall, if I hold right, my character takes a long time to move again, but if I let go of right and press it again, they move sooner. You probably worked hard on this, but there wasn't much to show for it, unfortunately.

OutThere by mrsylar59 2018-08-16T00:23:24Z

The rocket-flying phase is terribly unfair. The camera is too close, and asteroids come in too fast to react to in time, so I just kept dying with little control over it. The best I could do was mash space to try and protect myself. It was so frustrating that I only landed on one planet before just quitting.

I like the title screen/game over music, it reminds me of OneShot. The game over screen of getting killed by an asteroid is also pretty funny.

Cat Lady Simulator by samh 2018-08-17T01:00:38Z

Not bad at all. The graphics are really nice, and the music sets the mood without being overbearing. The core mechanic is simple enough, but ultimately not that interesting; however, it's only four levels, so it works. Being blockaded by cats is pretty funny. My only real complaint is that I often had a hard time getting the food into the bowl, even when there were no obstacles. Good job!

Captain Starbeard and the Curse of the Wonky Equipment by those-30-ninjas 2018-08-19T01:52:08Z

I was mostly confused about the game overall. I understood that I had to place pieces on the grid, but it wasn't clear to me how the pieces affected gameplay, since I had no idea why my ship was doing anything, or how it defended me from the enemies. I noticed that the enemies were different colors, but if I was meant to be able to change my block placement strategy to react to them, then there was definitely not enough time, because new waves of enemies come in very quickly. I "won" the first time I played, but I'm not even sure how or why. Besides that, the graphics and music were alright. I think this game needed clearer instructions.

Duo Dungeon by LMG613 2018-08-19T03:05:52Z

I've seen this concept a lot of times before in co-op Minecraft maps, but the execution here was rather boring, and the "puzzles" weren't very difficult or interesting. The way the camera "glides" when you turn is slightly annoying, I would've preferred it to just move one-to-one with my cursor. And speaking of my cursor: if you're making a game where the cursor controls the camera, please lock the cursor to the window so it doesn't escape. The game was really short, and I didn't have that much fun, but at least the "offline 2-player" mechanic was slightly original.

Space Goats 2 by Tim Ruswick 2018-08-18T01:26:21Z

There was definitely potential here, but it was all squashed by the only level being too short. This would have worked better as an endless runner, with randomized obstacles. In any case, this game doesn't really have any challenge, you just hold right and press space occasionally for less than a minute, then it's over. The music was decent, and the graphics were all good, but the humor came off as very forced. Could've been a lot better, but at least it was playable.

Quadrata Minima by mccarlp 2018-08-18T04:06:42Z

In the year 2018, where the match-three genre has been beaten to death over and over again, then brought back from the dead only to be beaten back to death once more, I didn't think it was possible for anybody to bring anything original to the table. And yet, you did, so congratulations. Besides this minor miracle, the sounds were... interesting, the graphics were passable, and the game was just fun enough to keep me playing. I actually got the high score! Good entry.

Race to Gamertown by ryan cross 2018-08-16T01:34:46Z

This is pretty rough. The vertical camera sensitivity is lower than the horizontal sensitivity for some reason, so the camera is hard to control. The ball goes careening away at the slightest push of a button, so the ball is hard to control, too. After the main menu, the mouse disappears, but it doesn't get locked to the window, and it doesn't reappear for me to be able to see what I'm doing when I try to click replay. And, when I click replay, the game just quits anyway.

Procedural generation is cool, but I would've liked to see the map be able to move in more than just a straight line.

Clot! by Ghoster 2018-08-18T05:41:10Z

I really enjoyed this! I said this on another game earlier today too, but I can't believe I'm seeing a match-three game with an original mechanic. The character controls well, the few graphics look pretty nice (very nice details on the connected blocks), and the game is deceptively difficult if you're playing for score. I like the song, too. Even though it's simple, it's a lot of fun to play. Great job!

OPEN-ME.ZIP by Adam Harms 2018-08-18T03:50:56Z

The music was the best part of this game, I got a great vibe from it. The concept of juggling hard drive space seems neat on paper, but I actually just found it more tedious than anything, since I could only actually fit one program at a time, having to go back and forth between rooms just to get my ability back. Maybe if this was expanded on, and you had more leeway, it would've been more interesting. As for the story, it seems like you were trying to be "deep" or "bittersweet" or something along those lines, but it kind of just fell flat for me because the game was so short. Overall... I wish the game was as good as the music.

Pyramidion by Matank 2018-08-19T02:42:54Z

The best part of this game is easily the battle music, it's awesome. My biggest gripe with this game is the snake AI (I played normal difficulty); usually, if they're heading towards you, you can jump over them, and then they will turn around to chase you just a moment after you land. But sometimes, seemingly randomly, they will turn around as soon as you jump over them, and you do not have enough time to react to that movement, so you die pretty unfairly. This turned me off from the game completely after enough times, but I did see the ending from somebody else's playthrough. The animations weren't very good, but the fact that you put in the effort to do animation at all puts this above many other games. I really liked your implementation of the theme; using the natural shape of the pyramid to restrict space was a good idea. Not a bad entry, but the gameplay was a little too simple to keep me engaged for long.

One Man's Trash by mike_inPrinciple 2018-08-18T03:18:03Z

I've played a lot of Cookie Clicker, but this game still hurt my hand after only a few levels. This game was interesting in that even though I was only having a meh amount of fun, I still felt compelled to keep playing, so I guess you could call it addicting. I would've played more levels, but my hand seriously hurts because you have to spam click so hard. I thought the sound effects would get annoying, but they were actually entertaining. Pretty alright game overall, as simple as it is.

Falloor by Madamin_Z 2018-08-17T00:08:23Z

I was having a lot of fun with this, until the final level, which was just really frustrating because it just devolved into trial-and-error with where you can stand, and memorizing the pattern until you made it past the turrets. The song was nice the first time, but got annoying after just a few loops. The graphics are all nice, and the falling tiles going all the way down is a nice touch. I really appreciate that you can't fall down the holes you make while you walk. And maybe it's just me, but I feel like sometimes player's hitbox is a little wonky, but I'm probably wrong. Overall, pretty good.

Step into the Void (Web) by Bilzc10 2018-08-16T01:16:17Z

I couldn't get very far because I kept getting walled off from the trophy, which is no fun.

Step into the Void (Web) by Bilzc10 2018-08-16T04:37:42Z

@bilzc10 If you'd like a recommendation, you could implement a simple pathing algorithm that checks whether or not there is a path from the player (or maybe from the starting position) to the goal, and if there isn't, don't remove that block.

Step into the Void (Web) by Bilzc10 2018-08-17T00:34:31Z

@bilzc10 And with that simple fix, the game is suddenly playable! I've re-rated.

Crowded by Simone Cicchetti 2018-08-18T03:27:33Z

A short little burst of fun. A few small nitpicks first: I wish the green ones didn't spawn on top of you when you're sitting still, the "danger" meter blocking part of the play area was annoying, and I accidentally clicked the exit button as soon as I died because I was shooting, which was annoying. Besides that, everything was pretty okay. Just an okay game.

A Bar In Space by Fluffy_Kaeloky 2018-08-17T01:13:10Z

This was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. Graphics and music are nice, one small complaint is that you seem to need to use the mouse to navigate the main menu despite it being a keyboard-focused game. Also, I'm not sure if it's a bug or what, but I noticed that sometimes if I press the space bar while playing, I get transitioned back to the main menu. Otherwise, pretty neat.

AstroHoarders by tokumei 2018-08-19T02:20:06Z

Well, you weren't kidding about the controls. I was flying and zooming and spinning all over the place the whole time. And yet, even though I made almost 0 progress towards keeping asteroids on the screen, I still had a lot of fun flailing around in the uncontrollable ship; I spent most of my playtime laughing at how badly I was doing. It reminded me of QWOP. So, even if it wasn't the way you intended, I still got a lot of enjoyment out of this.

Oh, sh*t! — Ludum Dare #42 — Running out of space by xPheRe 2018-08-16T01:46:31Z

Well, you're right, it's playable, but that's about it. The pieces on the board look nice, but the incoming pieces are a little confusing at first glance because of the shadow (?) underneath them. Definitely needs either a reset button or a goal. I wish that when a new piece arrives, it wouldn't shift the position of every other piece, because often a piece will move right as I'm trying to grab it, which is frustrating. Not bad, but it's very obviously unfinished.

CrumbleDungeon by Celdur 2018-08-17T00:46:13Z

The inventory system is slightly confusing at first, but a pretty cool concept. And some of those weapon shapes, lol. I like the puzzle aspect, but it would be a little better if I knew which direction enemies were going to move. Even though this is just a kind of demo, I'd be interested to see how it could be expanded on. Good job.

Void Incoming by Purrfexionator 2018-08-16T00:05:20Z

Well, it was just okay. Because of the somewhat strict timer for each level, the correct path is usually obvious from the start, so the only challenge comes in being patient enough to wait for the cannons to fire before you run into them. If different mechanics were added more regularly, it would've been more interesting. But, it was also short enough that I didn't have time to get bored of what there was, so I guess it found a balance.

Greedy Guts by Slojanko 2018-08-17T01:28:37Z

The first thing I want to say is, thank goodness Unity lets me rebind controls, because I absolutely needed to invert the y-axis to play this. But besides that: I think the music was the best part of this game, though I wish it didn't start from the beginning when you restart the level. The level design was kind of inconsistent; sometimes there would be a bunch of obstacles all in a row, and then there would be pretty long stretches of nothing at all. It seems like there is some limit on your ability to use the boost, but it doesn't show any on-screen indication; it would be better with one. Overall, it was just alright, but the food was so big that dodging it felt almost unfair sometimes, so I wasn't motivated to play it for too long.
