LD24 — Evolution

Out of the Sea by Uberi 2012-08-28T03:15:00

Sorry, I seem to be having the same issue. When I start it, I get a gray window and it launches a new Windows Explorer window with the folder I launched it from.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit.

Mutate by JPatrick 2012-08-28T04:33:00

Interesting game! I made it to level 8.

A few notes:
-I couldn't shoot with spacebar. After a while, I figured out I could click (left mouse button) to shoot.
-It seems like gravity is entirely single tile based which takes some getting used to. In particular, it seems like when you land on a tile, it takes about a second to be able to jump again.
-It took a bit to notice the enemies don't hurt the player, they shift they player by a tile space left or right.

Nifty things:
-The shooting portion is pretty fun. I like the speed you can fire.
-Graphics and sound effects are pretty nice.

Entourage by jprogman 2012-08-28T04:45:00

Interesting game idea. I upped goodguys to 100, left badguys at 30.

A few notes:
-It seems you have to assign orders individually, across 30+ guys. This is pretty tedious. Maybe a central location for setting every goodguy AI?
-Rate:0 being the fastest speed was counter-intuitive; I though rate would be the speed at which the game runs.

Nifty things:
-When running the game at 0 rate setting, it is neat to watch.
-Seems like there is some strategy potential if you could control AI over a group of guys.

Fungus Wars with Tone Matrix by zuloo37 2012-08-28T03:52:00

I was able to run the windows link. A pretty interesting game.

Nifty things:
-I like this sort of omni-directional shoot-em-up.
-I enjoyed growing as I defeated other colonies of pixels.
-Seeing other colonies of pixels fighting each other is really cool as well. It opens up strategic possibilities of sneaking up on fights and picking off the stragglers.

A few notes:
-Does the color change of my colony of pixels effect anything?
-There might be a slight bug in movement in that attempting to activate a few directions at once seemed to stop my colony of pixels, i.e. if I pressed left+up, I would not move sometimes.
-I only seem to get a single stream of shots, where all the non-playing pixel colonies get more elaborate shot modes.
-I feel like the game would benefit from an auto zoom, and especially at higher zoom levels, maybe the bullets could become larger so they're easier to see.

Socket City by SethR 2012-08-28T04:59:00

Interesting concept. I played the web version.

A few things:
-With asteroids coming from every direction and a limited number of firing directions, passing a day seems almost luck based on your setup and the incoming asteroids.
-Firing and destroying your own station parts is just not fun in my opinion.

Nifty things:
-The idea of defending a station in space is neat.
-Firing at asteroids is fun. Maybe have a rotatable turret or something so you could hit asteroids coming from multiple directions?
-I like the idea of building up a station. A little bit of input into how the station is constructed would be nice.

The Brewer by Maikeroppi 2012-08-30T02:29:00

Yeah, I have to agree it drifted well away from the theme as I was making it. Thanks for playing, and thanks for the feedback!

The World of What? by Kaytus 2012-08-28T03:32:00

Pretty neat game!

Nifty things:
-Very polished, and graphically pleasing.
-Nice music and sound effects.
-Seems like there's some interesting mechanics going on.
-To me, it appears the winning strategy is to focus on the central area, and try to shift all the other areas to the same color.

Not so nifty things:
-To be honest, I don't really know what's going on.
-From the intro screen, I understand what the buttons do, but that's about it.

A technical issues:
-I tried the downloadable and web version. Both seem similar to me, but the downloadable version has a tendency to shift the command half circle into the play area. Both when selecting windowed and full frame, the half circle would appear in the play field, sort of blocking the left hand clickable areas.

Men In Wings by byrono 2012-08-28T04:07:00

Good job!

A few notes:
-With the amount of enemies spawned, it is effectively impssible to avoid their bullets, even with speed and rotation upped.
-Controls seem almost like they are delayed a whole second.
-Enemies seem way more maneuverable than the player.

Nifty things:
-It's enjoyable taking on so many enemy planes.
-It seems like over time, you gain more skill points? Or perhaps it's based on score instead of time?
-The explosion sound effect is satisfying; I enjoy taking on multiple planes and blowing several of them up.

LD25 — You are the Villain

The Professionals by Brassawiking 2013-01-06T01:12:00

It's a good first try. I think the gameplay concept is actually interesting: having to stop and aim before shooting, taking cover, and giving the AI orders. I kind of like the art style too, although it would also benefit from a bit of finishing. Outside of LD25, you should try and complete this one!

I too know the pain of not quite finishing an entry before the deadline. Good luck with your next entry, and don't give up!

Who cares Fairplay? by bukt 2013-01-06T01:04:00

A well put together, humorous spin on a tower defense game. A few notes:

-Next time, you might want to post a screenshot of the gameplay as your current one isn't as exciting as the actual game.
-Having two lanes for a tower defense game is an interesting.
-The idea is really neat. I like stopping the cars and having a tower/lane defense game not based on shooting.
-My wrist hurts a bit from all the clicking and dragging. Hotkeys for the units would be nice.
-I hit a bug sometimes where the bus would go in between both lanes sideways, and drift all the way to the end of the level without anyone else being able to stop him. While hilarious, it did make it tricky to beat the levels.
-It seems like it takes a few seconds after being placed to begin stopping cars.
-In the second level, it seems like the officers get lost in the trees. It makes it a little difficult to see which type of officer is in which space.
-I think it would play a lot better if you received the money when a car is captured, then the car is held. This would certainly make it a lot easier.
-I managed to make it through the first level, but it's a bit tricky.
-The graphics were pretty amazing; this matches a lot of complete games on flash portals.

Congratulations to your team!

All Galactic Creatures by somethingbeautiful 2012-12-31T18:43:00

A very interesting concept, although does seem like you ran out of time. A few notes:
-The graphics were quite nice on the RTS screen.
-Darth Vader playing Pente against Napolean. You definitely get points for originality!
-As a few people commented, it seems the RTS and the buttons are not completely working.
-The AI Napolean puts up a good struggle, but takes a pretty long time to move.
-The sound is funny, but I had to mute it due to the sound that plays when AI Napolean is playing his turn. It almost seems as if his turn length is connected to this sound, like it waits for it to finish playing before moving?
-It would be handy to have arrow keys or something to move around the map. The default scroll speed is pretty slow.
-I managed to win once, and it stopped and went immediately back to the start screen without showing my winning move like it does for the AI. Possibly a bug?

Seems like an interesting concept with some potential that could be fleshed out with some more development time. Well done!

ERGOS by guilhermescosta 2013-01-06T00:37:00

I like the role reversal concept of this game, and it's quite well done. A few notes:
-The reverse space invaders is cool.
-I think the graphics and sound really support your concept well.
-Your team got a lot done in a little bit of time!
-One thing, it seems like there's a little bit of a bug. If you don't move, almost nothing is fired at you. Especially, if you go all the way to the left or right of the level, you can win each stage without moving again.
-When moving, I had quite a bit of difficulty dodging bullets. I think you are supposed to try and let them pass between your ships?
-It might be neat to be able to fire back too. ^_^
-I loved the ending!

Quite cool. I look forward to seeing your team's future games!

Multigon: A story about an unloved mesh. by zompi 2012-12-31T19:12:00

A very nice, moody game, that's for sure. A few notes.
-I like the general atmosphere of the darkly ambient music, black background, and minimal graphics.
-The AI on the spheres puts up a good fight.
-It seems that any vertex of your polygon is lethal to a circle, including the internal invisible ones. If that's the case, it would be nice to highlight these points.
-I had a lot of fun editing the story.txt to substitute my own sayings into the in-between level screens. Adding the ability to skip these screens would be nice.
-The gameplay concept is interesting, and I like the risk/reward of making yourself bigger and getting more HP, or staying small and making it easier to avoid bullets.
-Once I realized that you could rotate, it became even more fun, although I bugged out the K/left rotation and my polygon stopped rotating in that direction.

Very nice entry!

A Reason for Vengeance by Joseph Miller 2012-12-31T19:35:00

I really liked your game, actually. A few notes.
-In general, I prefer minimal amounts of text in games, but your writing was actually well done.
-The game fits the theme really well, and I like that your character's motivations are understandable if not justifiable.
-The shooting gameplay worked pretty well. I especially liked having the villagers that you could try to avoid.
-A minor issue, it would be nice if the enemy projectiles were flushed from the screen. Once or twice, I died, revived, then immediately died again because of a leftover projectile.
-Not sure if it is because I put it in a background time or that it was my second time through, but it stopped working once after all the Guild wizards were defeated and I started my own Guild.
-The few choices were interesting, and since it was focused and compact, I actually played it a few times.

Nicely done!

The Villain by TheAwesomeJoke 2013-01-07T15:36:00

The mechanic certainly works and fits with the theme. A few notes:
-I ran into some graphical glitches in the beginning (what looked like a flicker police light with no policeman, and nobody was around for ~10 seconds), but after that things worked fine.
-As I said, the mechanic works well. I especially like the policemen chasing you and being able to hide in the trash cans.
-I like the graphics too. Simplistic, but they get the job done.
-One issue is if a citizen is turned left, you can't see if you've already stolen from them, or if they still have their coin.
-I had a little trouble finding my way back to the stash to deposit the coin.

Solid entry!

YOU ARE EVIL!! by Benproductions1 2013-01-07T15:25:00

An interesting setting. A few notes:
-I like the island setting.
-I think you're using pre-made assets, but they look good.
-The money / evil points generation seems quite slow, especially given how quickly the castle health scales. At Castle 3, I had only the Lvl1 Evil Rocket, which did ~12 damage and took a few seconds to recharge. I had to take off 200 hit points of a castle.
-The gameplay itself works well. I just wish my weapon fired a little faster.

Good job completing a game for Ludum Dare, especially a 3D one!

Fire Simulator Returns: 2012 HD by gerafin 2013-01-06T00:27:00

This is a pretty interesting concept, and congratulations on finishing your first big project! A few notes:
-I like the concept and graphics of the game.
-It's pretty neat to see the fire grow and flames spread.
-I have to agree with the other players, the flame recharge is pretty slow.
-The clouds are brutal, especially with the low recharge rate.
-No audio, but I am guessing this is intentional.
-I really enjoyed playing and spreading the flames, but the tutorial might be a little more fun than the main game. It might be nice if the houses stayed burning?

All in all, it was a neat little game. Great job!

Vet by Maikeroppi 2012-12-31T17:49:00

Thanks for playing! Hopefully it didn't waste too much of your time.

This wasn't exactly what I intended. If you look at the source/images, I implemented a section where the vet turns into a monster and you have to play as the cat/goat running away. I also was trying to add in obstacles, but this is all I could get done by the deadline.

I also wasted too much time on the horrible graphics. For next LD, I think I'll try something more abstract. Thanks again!

Vet by Maikeroppi 2013-01-04T20:29:00

I am painfully aware of how bad this is, but hope to improve with my next contest entries.

Thanks for playing and for your comments!

Neutral Balance by koller-digital 2012-12-31T19:49:00

One of the more interesting game concepts I've played, well done! A few notes:
-It took me a bit to figure out as I just started firing, but playing both sides at once is cool.
-I feel like the gameplay mechanics are well designed and balanced. The fact that one side grows if it gets too large, and each shot produces a shot for the opposite side results in quite a bit of strategy for such a game.
-Seems heavily tilted to the light side. I couldn't last too long when the light side auto growing speeds up.
-There didn't seem to be any sound. Not sure if a bug or you didn't have time for this.
-I thought the graphics were kind of charming, even though you're mostly killing the poor little green guys.

Very well done!

Execution Chamber (Now a Jam entry) by Kaslai 2012-12-31T17:42:00

I rated the Jam entry. Quite an impressive little game.

A few notes:
-I'm really impressed with all the graphics and animation you managed to put in, especially since it's in C++/SDL. Hardcore!
-The intro was nifty and a good setup.
-I really liked the music, especially the dark bass part in the middle. Fits the game very appropriately.
-As csanyck and you already discussed, button/automated pulling would've really helped. I spent most of my time pulling rather than shooting.
-A little violent for my tastes, but definitely fits the theme.

Great job!
