Very neat idea - took me a while to see the benefits of the breeding, but boy - when it took off it really got complex quickly!
Quite good fun, and just awesomely original

Really cool stuff, and great unified feel.
Unfortunately it's running at ~5fps on this machine for some reason so I'll have to wait on votes
Holy crap, comments!
Thanks for the feedback, everyone :)
Baburo: hehe, it's supposed to be quite fast, but perhaps there's a timestep issue - I'm _very_ new to flashpunk. Glad you liked it!
magicdweedoo: I'm still chuckling at your comment, ape person :)
Blundis: thanks! I spent a while tweaking the speedup, but it still didn't feel right - I expect that as I playtested it my expectations of what was "slow" changed.. the post-compo update has a different speedup value, but I think it's too slow now - any thoughts?
zx81: I like your candor. The design included further evolution than I managed to do in time, hadn't considered moving to a car, but going upright, shaving itself and putting on a suit were all originally intended :)
Sergey Mohov: Psychic Man! Originally this was an auto-runner, but I turned that off while testing and grew to like it this way (easier to play around on the trees) however I will probably still make it more canabalt like, perhaps with the LEFT key slowing movement to a walk. I'll let you know if I ever sell my soul to the apple store.
nseward: re. "awesome": yay! re. "offscreen glitch": nay! Originally the game killed you offscreen because of the aforementioned canabalt design - I then spent the last few hours trying to fix this "feature" thought I'd nailed it but a few people seem to have found ways to usurp my fixes.
Thanks again everyone for playing
ncannasse: Nice one :) Yeah, I kind of hacked together the grappling hook mechanic trying to avoid too much stall time, unfortunately it came out that way regardless. There are a few ways you can get quite effective with it, however since there's no scenario which /requires/ swinging it sort of becomes irrelevant (besides, as you say, "having fun"!)
Will Edwards: I shall venture to give this a crack - I'd aimed at low-res partially as a stylistic choice (and partly out of "oh god I only have 23 hours") but it didn't quite mesh ideally. Once I'm near non-3g internet I'll upload some of my video including the making-of-sound effects which is a bit goofy :)
F'in brilliant!
Michael jackson. sex bob-ombs. mouse trap. holy crap.
I will now always remember having nothing to worry about.
Fun game!
A little unclear what my goal is after the dog's grown up, though I'm still playing so I guess I'll find out!
Hahaha! Brilliant.
Please tell me there were 1000 kittens in the end?
Also: I love how, after the janitor comments on the music making you crazy, it eventually fades out. I think "wow. it stopped! maybe that's a mistak... oh. it's started again." ^_^
really great use of minimalism and teaching by playing.
Very enjoyable, and I couldn't help feeling a little nervous due to the great atmosphere (frankly I was surprised when contact with the Thing didn't kill me, though I've only gotten a half zoen levels through so far)
So hard. So addictive :)
I haven't even gotten past the sperm part yet, but I tried for ages. even got to 19 a couple times before the whole bunch were dispersed..
Really cool, simple, engaging. will play again and try to see all the other parts
What a great concept - I love this :)
Took me a little while to get what I was doing, but it was worth it to watch my goofy little tractors stealing all the food! Roll, awkward stick tank. Roll.
Darnit - really keen to play this, but the music starts and nothing else happens.
Will see if I can wget it to local.. fingers crossed.
mohammad: 3 lives is computer game tradition! It's older than you and I combined :)
hehe - darn, no dice on running locally "you should really play this on the real site"
Hrm. unsure why it's not working on your page (for me); it's like the element is covered, or invisible.
Interesting idea - the idea of somewhat indirect attacks was initially a bit frustrating but actually adds quite a lot.
Would have been great to see a few more slopes, or perhaps materials which make the balls bounce more or less. perhaps gravity vortex?
nice work - very original :)
Great job, highly enjoyable little tale. Congrats. (p.s. my headphoned ears say hi ;)
Really nice job all aound, well done!
It'd be nice to be able to pull up the instructions at any time as my memory isn't what it used to be - but truly a very polished game
Very cool idea - though I must admit I was sort of expecting there to be a worm whose brain I'd been designing during gameplay :)
Wow that looks amazing!
Very interesting concept - Wasn't sure what the tutorial was trying to tell me, but I think I got the gist eventually.
Any chance you'll be adding to this?
Awesome stuff :)
Fun game (and hard)
I'll have to come back to it, kept dying on the second level. Sooo close on those block jumps.. soo close
nice work!
In case anyone else has the same issue with publishing and knows as little about Haxe/NME as I do, just use the following:
nme build flash -web
(the '-web' creates html and presumably a slightly different .swf as well since it seems to run more slowly)
Thanks, folks!
Yeah - a couple of things broke in an untimely fashion making it seem even more incomplete than it was!
I did some tweaks to make an Unofficial Jam Version, which is available up the top now and will continue to be updated over the course of the day
Thanks for the feedback everyone (and patience with the compo build)
Very glad the FTL/Frozen Synapse thing made sense (thanks Kurrik!) - it wasn't what I had in mind initially, but by day 2 was a solid goal. (Yay!)
MrExcessive: Thanks a million! I'm keen to keep working on this, but I really appreciate your generosity
HuvaaKoodia: Oh noez, you found the weakness! :) I watched a friend's stream while he played and he did exactly the same thing. Balance fail!
I like your suggestions too - some are very similar to my original intent (wanted barriers/topography and the point of the breeding was vulnerability) but your suggestion of the size class change is an interesting one I'd like to try. I'd considered the idea of splitting the hitpoints between parent and child (they can still heal to full), but your approach may well prove better (and more clear)
SuperlevelSebastian: !! HOLY CRAP !!
Thanks so very much, no idea how that slipped through the cracks.. All fixed now.
MinionStudios: Woot! Nice horror game to you too, sir/madam/people!
Well-timed, I was poking around, building things and not really knowing what I was doing and generally looking like a confused druid who didn't read the instructions first.
Right at the moment that I figured I'd best set out to explore NorthEast I saw the wave of red and got a weird sense of urgency which caused me to suddenly understand a lot more of what was going on.
Quite cool, congrats on your first finished Ludum Dare!
Interesting idea, though the random generation leaves much to be desired.
Is that music procedural? It's irritating, but if you put the effort into generating music you deserve recognition for this :)
great work, a little hard to see why you die or how I beat the boss, but very enjoyable!
should carry a warning about its addictiveness.
very super-hexagon, I likey!
Hee heee! Splat! I died.
Sounds weren't working for me, but I'm using an antiquated version of Chrome
Holy wow-trousers that was fun!
Looks amazing too, really good use of spooky lighting and it feels really out of control when the light goes out and there are huge shadows coming at you
Wow.
THE FLOOR IS LAVA!
rad.
Oh wow, I totally started working on a prototype of this last week after having a dream about it - thanks so much for letting me play it without having to work more :)
Pretty damn cool idea, and really smooth implementation (and a tutorial!)
It'd be nice to have a little more build time at the beginning, but it's highly playable and a fantastic job
Really nice-looking game, congrats on your first LD!
I quite enjoyed playing, and had a lot of near-misses which got me nervous :)
Didn't stick with it very long, but an enjoyable experience
Can't wait to try it with another person!
foreveralone
alas the Jar won't launch for me either, I'm on Mac Osx 10.6
Looks really nice though, will come back and hope there's a solution
Fantastic concept and execution, really feels like it'd fit in with the cool ambient games.
I like the pace, but I was playing it with fairly chilled music playing, so I imagine if you had a little more time it'd be a killer (and great time-passing-mechanism on mobile platforms)
The reason it's only playable in firefox is that the start of your web link is "https" change it to "http" and it should work fine on other browsers
Fucking. awesome.
Brilliant idea and execution. You get all my stars!
Great work, nicely designed and implemented :)
I concur with the comments about block-pushing being a nag, but it's hardly a deal breaker, just sort of pulls the rug out from the exploratory feeling at the beginning.
Especially liked that there were multiple approaches to solve it
Haha - wow, I chose incorrectly in the [yes/no] and accidentally did a speedrun. Thank goodness there are extra screenshots to hint that there's more, but I had a hefty chuckle when I thought "epicly short" meant 15 seconds or so.
Using 'enter' to skip dialogs took me a little while to discover though, which I guess is oddly stupid of me, I've gotten so used to Z, X or spacebar that I mashed keys quite a lot before trying enter :)
Nice work! Gonna play more
Really cool stuff, what an amazing look!
I didn't stick with it long, but v.cool
That was just awesome. First game I've wanted to obsessively replay for speedruns.
In fact I may do just that in a minute. So rad.
=== Anyone Who's Talking About "glitchy" Handling ===
This platformer is way smarter that it initially seems. I was about to dismiss it and then was rewarded (repeatedly) for perseverance. One of my favourite platformers in ages.
I would gladly play more of this, and wouldn't bat an eyelash at paying for the privilege if it had a highscore/replay system.
Also: I loved how many different approaches you allowed for, reminds me of the advanced pathways in Mario games
Seriously good work!
