LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Vast Trivia Of The Void by JorgeGameDev 2021-04-29T08:45:33Z

Wow, this is an amazing entry! The prevalence of non-questions really made me laugh. That feels appropriate for a capricious entity beyond mortal ken.

The art was great, and I especially liked how the Thing's hand (hand?) kept changing into different objects.

The theme felt a little tacked-on. It would have been good if the void changed as you got deeper, but the gameplay aspect was great. The risk-reward mechanic feels great for a trivia game.

Mainly, I'm amazed at how much there was in this game. So many tile types, so many questions, alternate skins, etc. Very impressive work.

shaftception by testudor 2021-04-28T16:25:43Z

This was fun! It needs more feedback, especially on the first couple of obstacles, but it was enjoyable to play.

Given how narrow the shaft is, the horizontal speed is a bit high. It makes it very hard to be precise.

The art is nice, and the music works very well for the style of game.

Hole Town by dob 2021-04-29T09:36:02Z

I played it to the end! The puzzle mechanic was interesting, and the overall presentation was very nice.

The rock sizes caught me out a lot. I think fewer distinct sizes with more obvious differences would be better. Quite often I dropped a rock in only to find it was bigger than I though, and everything got messed up.

Although I'm not colour blind myself, I really appreciate that you gave the rocks contrasting symbols as well as colours. That's such a nice consideration, and the kind of thing that often gets forgotten under time pressure.

Matt's Marvelous Mining Mission by mmason 2021-04-29T12:28:01Z

I really liked the mission/quest/upgrade system. Not sure what to call it. It was cool that you could find stuff on one run, and remember where it was when a given mission came up.

It would be nice to be able to skip upgrades you didn't want. The drill was slow enough already that slower drilling felt more frustrating than useful.

The music player is an odd, but cool idea.

Descent into Midnight Trench by kfischer-okarin 2021-04-29T08:23:33Z

Elegant in its simplicity. It feels like it belongs on a C64.

Frustratingly hard (mainly because I got caught up in trying to harpoon things), but I kept restarting.

良いゲームでした :)

Fathomless by SilkyPantsDan 2021-04-28T12:17:49Z

The aesthetics are great (love the doodled art, and the pencil scratch music), and the core mechanic is a very clever take on the theme.

I have to agree with the comments about the difficulty. Smaller hitboxes on the hazards/character would be good. At the moment, you die long before the art looks like it's touching, which makes it feel a bit unfair.

Overall, a great entry.

Perchance to dream by Anne Ogborn 2021-04-29T12:12:34Z

Going deeper and deeper into dreams is a good idea. Normally I'd complain that buttons didn't always work, or that the text disappeared too quickly, but to be honest, it kind of feels right for a dream. That feeling of being slightly confused and out of control is very dreamlike.

Scython by BinarySpark 2021-04-28T13:55:59Z

I really enjoyed playing this one! The way the corruption spreads over the ground is a take on tower defence that I haven't seen before. The power grid system was also neat, and overall it was very satisfying.

The art and music were really cool, and the theming really evoked Doom's storyline for me.

My one complaint is that going deeper didn't have much impact. I would occasionally glance at the top-right corner and be surprised to see that I'd gone down a layer. It would be cool to have some screenshake, or particles, or a more dramatic change in the background to really sell that idea of getting deeper.

Mind Hack by DivFord 2021-04-29T08:50:42Z

Thanks to everyone for playing, rating and commenting! Really appreciated. I agree with everyone who thought the mind-control wasn't balanced well.

@leggy That's worrying. Is that even after adjusting the slider?

@divagated Thanks for the feedback! The bloodsplat is supposed to be offscreen, which, admittedly, it isn't in either build, but it doesn't cover the HP bar for me. Which version did you play?

@moski Thank-you so much for the in-depth critique! High praise indeed, since your game is absolutely amazing.

Drain the Sea by tgb20 2021-04-27T14:54:27Z

A very well-rounded game. The mechanics are interesting, the art is cute, and the music is very pleasant.

Not sure how to win though... You wrote "5km" to win, but I got to 19,000m and nothing happened.

Deep Rescue by johnnyjw 2021-05-04T02:36:21Z

A game with a message! Good stuff.

The feedback on the claw could be better. It was hard to tell if I was picking up the bottles and cans, or if they were disappearing into the sea.

I think there's a bug with restarting. It sends me back to the menu screen, but I had to refresh the page to play again.

Overall, nice game!

Ascending Dungeon by BenPeterson 2021-04-28T15:16:34Z

I had a lot of fun playing this, although even after several runs I'm not sure I've really grasped the descending mechanic. I was quite often unsure of why I died.

I loved the character designs. Platypwarrior, fecal knight, and boom toad really made me smile.

Deeper Into The Mind by michaelyount 2021-04-29T13:23:16Z

Nice game! The art and music, in particular, were very good.

It needs more feedback. I didn't know how much health I had. I think I died once, because I went back to the centre of the level. Also, I wasn't sure if I was doing anything to the enemies, since they didn't react at all.

Impressed that you implemented such varied enemy behaviours. That was neat, even if I suck at bullet hells...

You Know The Drill by Maksime 2021-04-29T13:45:55Z

You hooked me long enough for me to beat the game, so I would say this is a good game! The loop is very satisfying.

I'm not clear on the difference between "drill speed" and "drill level". The latter seemed to make my drill faster...

The music is nice, the art is cute, and I'm really impressed that you found time to implement an opening cutscene.

Abyss by Nomppie 2021-04-28T16:48:55Z

Nice game! Feels good to play, for the most part, and the pixel art is very pleasing.

Is there any benefit to killing enemies? I found the game was mostly about falling and hoping not to land on anyone...

Mining Robot by Doc_Moustache 2021-04-28T15:01:32Z

I was going to complain about the lack of a tutorial, but the more I played, the more I felt it was actually better off without one. The game is so chill (especially with that music), that figuring stuff out is part of the fun.

I think I broke the game though. I briefly saw the home teleporter that Edmar mentioned, before falling through the floor never to return...

Overall, I liked this game.

Tall Tales by Octopoid 2021-04-28T12:50:24Z

I liked the models. Simple, but everything was very recognisable.

What's supposed to happen when you choose the wrong lie? Both times, the character glared at me, and I didn't seem to be able to do anything except relaunch the game. That feels like a bug, but is it the failure condition?

The dialogue with the vicar made me chuckle when he was talking about pseudoscience. Very tongue-in-cheek.

Muggy Lake by Bossus 2021-04-27T14:41:26Z

Super creepy! The sound effects were spot on, and the gloomy lighting made me really paranoid, especially after getting the key.

I also had difficulties with the sword at the beginning. I eventually worked out that it wasn't for the tree. The problem is probably lack of feedback when you click on items. It felt like I was failing to pick it up, rather than that it didn't work in that situation.

Yu-Gi by frax 2021-04-27T14:08:38Z

The concept seems interesting, but I got stuck in a dungeon room with no functional exits.

Web Of Lies by romes 2021-04-29T12:38:38Z

A strange game, but a cool one. I think I reached the end, but it wasn't really clear. I made it to the boss at least.

I like the idea of a web of lies, but given that the path is drawn on the bottom of the screen, it seems like a waste not to let the player backtrack. Playing from the beginning every time was a little annoying. Was that a planned feature?

The art was cool, and I liked the implied story.

Sporelunk by Brainloaf Studio 2021-04-28T16:16:22Z

The art is so good! The death animation is absolutely horrifying, as is the monster.

My fan theory is that this is how mushrooms view humans.

Gulp! by oramun 2021-04-27T13:56:39Z

I like the concept, and the game looks great. However, I tried the second level a few times, and although I'm pretty sure I got all the buttons, the gate never opened. Am I missing something?

Down Whale by notpjriavs 2021-04-28T15:45:50Z

Beautiful game with a compelling loop. I really enjoyed dashing into the "caves" to find fuel.

My best run involved abandoning the gun altogether and just using melee. There might be a balance problem there.

Great game, hope to see more!

Deep molatoes by leggy 2021-04-28T14:38:24Z

A very enjoyable little game. It started off very chaotic, but as the molatoes got themselves killed, it was easier to keep track. To my surprise, I managed to reach the diamond, so good job on the difficulty balancing!

The molatoes got stuck now and then, and I had to waste money on a sign to get them moving again, but other than that it was a pretty smooth experience.

Third Party by Duckonaut 2021-04-27T14:27:29Z

I love the main mechanic. The way you can hide by using the same faction, but can only shoot by using a different faction makes for really interesting choices.

It froze on me, and I didn't feel like playing through again, but I hope I'll be able to play it again after the bugs are ironed out.

1000 Fathoms by Dom De Re 2021-04-29T13:58:17Z

I liked the way the water spread around the sub, and the hole-patching core mechanic was simple, but fun. I can see it being even better with a second player.

The audio was a little uncomfortable to listen to. Mainly the water flooding in sound. There was a lot of static noise. Slapping a patch on was satisfying.

I think you have a nice core concept here, and well executed. Good job!

Spooky Woods by Harrison Gottlieb 2021-05-04T03:27:35Z

What a lovely game!

The art and animations are absolutely beautiful, and the music is a really good fit for the game.

The spikes were a little hard to see, and I feel like their hitboxes were a bit bigger than the art, but generally the gameplay was very polished. I liked how developed the moveset was.

Overall, a very complete experience, and good fun.

Mushroom Mine by my_name_isnt_bob 2021-04-29T14:28:34Z

I feel like this concept has so much potential. An RTS about mining, from a side-on perspective? That's a really cool idea.

However, the lack of a tutorial really hurts it. My first couple of attempts, I could only give each guy one command, and it was micro-management hell. Once I realised you can click and drag, I tried again. I then found that you could do that for horizontal tunnels, but not vertical ones, which are what you mainly want. I kept going with one guy, and eventually realised that if the tunnel is two blocks wide, he can dig vertically. I reached the flag with the last guy.

I really hope you keep improving this after the jam. The world needs more strange worker management games!

Decked Out Clone by mrbrainfed 2021-04-29T10:49:58Z

What's here is pretty basic, but it's functional, and for your first game jam, overscope is not surprising. I've been doing jams for about 6 or 7 years now, and I still make that mistake. So, props for making a playable game!

I liked the dungeon. The use of different floor tiles added visual interest, and the ambience was really good.

The dash isn't very noticeable. I was expecting him to zip forwards, but he just moves slightly faster. I agree with fiaKaiera that E is the wrong key for that, although it works if you use arrow keys.

The "You died, lol" made me laugh. It's so casual!

Psycho Dive by Artemistake 2021-05-04T03:08:47Z

I really liked the core mechanic of moving the bodies, and the controls were well implemented.

Personally, I found the attack range to be way too short. The timing was very precise, and there wasn't a visual indication of how far the attack could reach.

I got stuck on the third or fourth level because I put all the bodies on the ledge to make stairs, then fell back to the bottom and couldn't get out. Entirely self-inflicted, but a reset button would be nice.

The music and art give a very eerie feel, and the introductory cut-scene was a nice touch. I liked how it set up how the game related to the theme.

SUBERDEEP by sendnoose 2021-04-29T12:48:31Z

A very atmospheric game, between the bubbles, the music, and the brilliant background art.

I wasn't sure what "OHKO" meant, and assumed it was the same as "OK". I immediately tried to collect a bomb, and realised it probably stood for 'one hit knock out'.

I've seen a few other submarine games, but the idea of getting deeper after a fixed interval is a really nice version of that concept.

Loved the torpedo. Very satisfying to fire.

The Lost Wet Scrolls by Hadi Jiwani 2021-05-04T03:50:22Z

An intriguing idea, but the "mystery" fell flat for me. I played through twice to get a good idea of how it worked. I initially thought I would be doing a logic grid kind of puzzle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_puzzle), but I just had to pick up the scrolls then make a 50/50 guess.

The concept of combining a mystery game with a platformer is interesting. That said, the platformer needs work. The camera is far too zoomed in, given your jump height.

Overall, I liked the concept here, and I hope you take the time to develop it further.

Down Down Well by OldDog 2021-04-28T13:10:26Z

Very nice game! I was surprised at how many mechanics there were. I particularly enjoyed the bomb, and the grey smoky cubes. Those were fun.

The jumping controls felt a bit awkward, but that might just be because I was playing one character with each hand.

The music was very soothing, and the characters were cute. I wish they faced the camera sometimes so I could see their faces...

Hypnagogia by kel 2021-04-27T15:10:27Z

A cool idea. When you get into a flow state, it's really satisfying, which I guess makes sense for a game about dreaming :)

Are the levels randomly generated? Some of the dead ends felt really unfair.

It would be cool to randomise the colour scheme in each level. I believe Desert Golfing does that, and it helps an infinite game feel more exciting.

Minedeeper by korfi 2021-04-29T13:01:35Z

Great game! The first run I did, I failed to notice that the screen was chasing me, but once I got that the tension was great.

Love the art style, and the idea of rotating around a central pillar.

The jump felt a little floaty, but other than that it controlled really well.

Overall, a very fun, cohesive experience.

Woof need to go deeper by Max XD 2021-04-28T15:57:37Z

A simple, fun game. We were able to pick it up very quickly and dig up some bones.

The music is a little too piercing for me. I found I had to play without sound.

The pixel art is cute, especially the little flowers.

PICO-8 Hexagon Topology Generator (updated version) by evn 2021-05-04T03:33:46Z

Well this was intriguing.

I'm not really sure what the goal is, and it seems to lag quite a lot after 3-4 subdivisions, but it's an interesting system.

It doesn't really feel like a complete game, but given your very limited time that's understandable. I hope you make something out of this in future.
