LD24 — Evolution

Ducks by koblaja321 2012-08-26T20:34:00

This really is one of those games which will go in to the history as a prime work of art.
Some games just become old, other games become classics. This game clearly is one of the latter.

The way F does things is very great. I have never seen that letter being used this way before. Sure, there are other games where F has done things, but honestly they tend to feel like cheap rippofs.

And the duck switching mechanic? That's simply outstanding.
I have to admitt that I have not played this game quite enough to see the full effect of this feature (after all it's pretty advanced and involved), but from what I've read and seen, it really couldn't have been any better.
And the use of Q and E to switch ducks is very great aswell. Not only does it allow for switching both back and forth, but it does so in a way that takes only a slight movement off the WASD keys. No need to lift your left hand and move it to the far ends of your keyboard.

The textures are of amazing quality. Sure, there are some things that could have been changed (like the duck texture and terrain texture), but over all, they would have been over decent if you had unlimited time. When you look at them and realize they were made in such a small period of time, that is one of those moment when you can think of nothing but "wow".

Over all, this game is extremely well made. A lot of determination, coding skills and time has clearly gone into making this game. This got my vote for best Lurum Dare 24 game.

Dungeon Runner by vilya 2013-05-01T23:13:00

+1 star for using WebGL ;)

Neat game!

tequilaJumper by mort96 2013-04-30T10:26:00

Thanks for the compliments :)

@ncgames yeah, I've concidered changin it to always jumping unless you hold the jump key, as the way it's played now invites to holding down space/w 99% of the time.

@Aceria Sadly the automatic world gen lsn't perfect. There are times when it's close to impossible to proceed :/

I agree, I should maybe have a slightly more advanced main character than a green cube, but meh :P

tequilaJumper by mort96 2013-05-04T21:33:00

Thanks everyone! :)

@GranaDa Vibrating platforms are a result of the random world generation. When making a platform which moves along the X axis, it first generates a random X coordinate for the start position, then a random end coordinate. If they happen to be close, and the speed (which also is random (though dependant on some factors)) is high, it vibrates.

@Prelucid Yup, hitting the edges bounce you.

@SmilingCat No, the random generator doesn't do anything like that - it's just the randomness of the universe being awesome ;)

Pardon, restructured my site and forgot to upload the post with the new paths. Should be fixed now

Super Mondria Brothers by dansludumdare 2013-05-02T08:18:00

This game has a strange fast pased, fluid and loose feel uncommon for this kind of game. I like it :)

Scout Droid Bravo 325 Jr by Mark Hildreth 2013-04-30T16:17:00

I love how you also used JavaScript and Canvas - not relying on browser plugins FTW!

Also, nice game.

The Blind MazzzZZZZe of Colors by fr_automatik 2013-05-01T21:51:00

Interesting concept.

Don't Smash The Vase by CryoGenesis 2013-05-01T21:55:00

This game seems interesting. Sadly, keyboard input doesn't seem to work for me. (Mac OS x 10.8, running JRE 7, tested both the downloadable jar and the web applet)

Loot Run by Spelchan 2013-04-30T17:09:00

Loving how you used nothing but a text box and javascript!

Shape Attack by mechagk 2013-05-01T22:04:00

A very interesting concept!

Night Story... by LemonTree 2013-05-01T22:18:00

Nice game. Also, I'm a big fan of writing browser in JS and other open web languages, not relying on browser plugins FTW <3

MATAR! by Teejay5 2013-04-30T08:32:00

The music freaked me out, I'm playing this in class with earbuds and the fancy stereo effects in the music made it sound like loud sound was coming from my laptop's speakers o.O

It's actually fairly relaxing to play :b

Run or Splash by Yacodo 2013-04-30T16:09:00

For some reason, this is quite addictive..

Generic Shoot Em Up by dcm 2013-05-01T22:57:00

First 3D game I've seen that doesn't require browser plugins. Neat! Did you use WebGL?

For the game itself, the controls are a bit wacky, especially the turning feels too slow. Collision detection could also be more precise (you seem to just check for the x/z coordinates and not account for width and length). Other than that, nice :)

VTanks by jpverkamp 2013-05-01T23:04:00

I remember being addicted to this kind of tank games years ago. Great memories :3

Minimally Run n Gun by madballneek 2013-05-01T23:23:00

This is nice, but would be quite a lot better if it had better support for pressing multiple movement keys at the same time :/

SQUARE by Beardbotnik 2013-05-01T23:29:00

Very neat and smooth 3D effect and adimations! The controls aren't quite tight enough for my taste though.

Pure Green by Christina Nordlander 2013-05-01T23:33:00

it's neat how you use a text box for the graphics, but it would've been better (a lot less tedious) to not have the disappear and fade in again-kind of effect between each move.

RGBCMY by ericlass 2013-04-30T16:34:00

This is a quite neat idea. I like it :)

Colors by oyster_crusher 2013-05-01T22:10:00

Web game without relying on browser plugins FTW!

Showdown by Team Sleipnir by TeamSleipnir 2013-04-30T16:01:00

Loving the game, hating how you force me to use both Windows and .net D:
(btw, hai Mega, I'm mort :3)

Black vs. White by lathomas64 2013-05-01T23:10:00

It's nice, but it kinda makes you wonder: Is Unity really needed for such a simple game? :P

Metaballs by Rialgar 2013-05-01T21:32:00

The graphics seem messed up for me... Tested in OS X (10.8) using both safari and chrome, WebGL turned on in Safari.

DudeJump by agnulf 2013-04-30T12:17:00

It's very hard o.O
Nice work. I like how you didn't use a language which depends on browser plugins. Lemme guess, JavaScript and Canvas?

DudeJump by agnulf 2013-04-30T12:18:00

wait, nevermind it is Flash, my browser just somehow derped and didn't say it was. Still good tho.

ReTri by jmf 2013-05-01T21:19:00

This is simple, yet wonderful! I love it. Full score. Just amazing.

Minimal Gravity by DavidErosa 2013-05-01T22:41:00

That's a very, very neat game you got there. Loving the idea of using gravity like that. Also, looks neat.

Potatosimplificationarmaggedon by atlantian 2013-05-01T23:00:00

I really like the art style, and the idea of coloring the world :3 Also, potatoes

The Quest for Minimalism by Arkazon 2013-04-30T16:22:00

The game is very nice, and I love that you used WebGL instead of relying on browser plugins like Flash, Unity or Java :D

This Place by FelixNemis 2013-05-01T23:21:00

shouldn't be possible for a game this simple (I mean, move squares on to circles...) to require this much thought and be this fun. Apparently it is :P

Wither by Skoggy 2013-04-30T16:36:00

I love the kind of magical feel of the game.

Platformer: An Exploration of Minimalism by Daisuke909 2013-05-02T07:59:00

I love these kinds of "meta games". Nice job!

LudumLife by midgard 2013-08-26T22:44:00

An awesome game. Really loving how it looks with the 2D player in the 3D world when running to/from the study building :P

Specky by Rabbits... 2013-08-26T17:54:00

That's a really interesting control scheme.

Seconds of Light by kristof 2013-08-26T23:05:00

Great game, nice lighting engine! Though what does it have to do with 10 seconds..?

10 second test by echa 2013-08-26T22:49:00

I love this. Great concept, great implementation :)

OHNOES by zedutchgandalf 2013-08-26T17:25:00

Loving the "congratulations! You died!". Great - and macabre - game!

TENSEC by bombjack 2013-08-26T17:21:00

A hell to play on touch pad. Great game though :)

Five Seconds by Latcarf 2013-08-26T18:00:00

That was really frustrating with that ringing noise and extremely sensitive controls. A positive kind of frustrating though :P

Signal Delay by ChrisGaudino 2013-08-26T17:08:00

Awesome concept. Honestly not too sure if it transforms well into a game, but overall really nice :)

It's Faster with QWOP by HELLO23 2013-08-26T17:34:00

As zedutchgandalf said, it's very confusing. Assuming that's the idea though :P

I Need The Cheese or I Will Die by JimMakesGames 2013-08-26T17:41:00

Hey, I'm mort96 from the live stream. Not sure if you remember me :P

Anyways, great game/decapitation simulator!

Jim the Alien Parasite by pelayobesa 2013-08-26T22:58:00

Interesting game, but I'm struggling to see what it has to do with 10 seconds..?

workhorse: it's my life by kayupla 2013-08-26T17:18:00

Controls could've been tuned a bit, other than that, it's a really nice game.

Bit-ship Ld27 By lcass by lcass 2013-08-29T11:33:00

Really cool - if only it was more user friendly. Some visual candy could do too.

10x10 seconds by Anton_D 2013-08-26T17:40:00

Hit detection seems to be a bit off. Nice job though!

Crappydoodle by superjoebob 2013-08-26T17:31:00

My touchpad drawing skills sucks, other than that it's an astonishing game. 5 stars!

Off and On by gbear605 2013-08-26T22:51:00

Very interesting game.

Jack and the Alarm Clock by Frozen Fractal 2013-08-26T17:50:00

Nice game, slightly annoying controls though.
