LD45 — Start with nothing

Cloud Boy by JCMonkey 2019-10-07T04:44:47Z

Lovely game with cute sound effects and nice graphics. I love the way you have a player set level of difficulty where the platforming jumps can be super precise if you feel like you can preserve the Juice or more forgiving if you want. The ability to restart levels and remove cloud blocks was also super smart and even though I managed to clip myself into a cloud once, I deleted the offending block and was back on my merry way. Overall great job!

Armistice by frenchie 2019-10-09T04:31:11Z

Great game with a lot of depth. The levels started getting a lot easier once I started to create ships that didn't have all the parts to be a great space faring vessel and started making one and done problem solvers. I also liked the level where you could only use a 2 boosters and had to solve it much more like a puzzle than a shmup.

One minor nitpick is that it would have been nice to have a minimap or some way of knowing which way the enemy ship is when they end up offscreen and you have to maneuver your 2 booster ship towards them.

Overall great entry!

Grow quickly by congusbongus 2019-10-07T05:42:31Z

Best game I've played so far at this jam! Loved the art and music. The upgrades that you receive between the levels also shake up the gameplay just enough to keep things fresh! The little whistle that your character does when you interact with nothing was also a nice touch.

Only piece of criticism I have is that on occasion I have trouble moving where I want to and overshoot the crop I intend to be next to.

Pot Luck by Marchmain 2019-10-07T05:56:36Z

This is the most unique interpretation of the theme that I've seen today. Also an entry with one of the strongest mood's. I really felt like a host trying to please all my guests. The art was nice and the little icons over each head made things easy to understand.

One piece of criticism I have is that keeping all of the information in my head was a bit much once the guest list started going over 4-5.

That being said well done! I had a lot of fun with this entry.

HUNTER HUNGER by oddarock 2019-10-13T04:41:12Z

Nice touch with the text! Giving all the edible enemies some personality was a cool idea. Also cool to see a game that has wall clinging mechanics. Overall a short but satisfying experience.

Project Snowball by neverix 2019-10-07T06:09:25Z

I like the atmosphere of this game, the wind blowing and mumbling of the character through the snow is a fun addition. The explanation of having a tunnel under that you blow air up through was also pretty funny.

I did unfortunately run into a physics issue where I jumped the snowball and it landed on the flat part of the hill and stopped. I think this softlocks the game.

Overall neat concept! Also the first game with voice acting I've come across today.

Nothing On Frontlines by Pavel Ivanov 2019-10-07T04:32:09Z

Neat idea on the idea of changing terrain on a tower defense game! I totally missed the variety of towers during my first play through but upon my second run through being able to swap really helped me to survive longer. I also really like the sandbox level you give the player in to learn the controls.

The only criticism I have is that the visual and sound effects became a bit too intense over time but didn't make the game unplayable.

Nascence by Calamador 2019-10-07T05:04:48Z

@appoxgames Yeah I tried to explain it in the dialogue in the beginning of the game but in retrospect the concept behind this game probably wasn't the greatest for a game jam lol. The idea behind this game is structured around a mechanic that shows up in some bullet hell games called bullet grazing. The pink circle in the center is your hitbox. If a bullet touches it you take damage. Surrounding the pink circle is a blue circle. If a bullet goes through the blue circle you graze it and get a powerup. The main goal behind the game is a dance between getting close enough to enemy bullets to steal their power and far enough that you don't take any damage. Still thanks for both playing my game and leaving feedback! I'll try and update the description to hopefully steer newer players in the right direction.

Nascence by Calamador 2019-10-07T05:26:06Z

@sode Yeah I definitely wanted to do to add a background with some parallax to give a sense of scale but it got lost in the feature creep lol. Thanks for playing!

Nascence by Calamador 2019-10-07T05:29:21Z

@neverix I should have ratcheted up the difficulty way before the final boss to give the player more bullets to graze and a much better overall feel to the game. It was originally supposed to feel like you were clawing your way up from having nothing but a dinky single shot weapon to a powerful cannon at the end but the pacing was all off. Still, thanks for soldiering on and getting through it!

Nascence by Calamador 2019-10-09T03:59:07Z

@frenchie Hey thanks for playing the game, thanks for looking into the source code and identifying one of the issues, and thanks for suggesting a solution! Most useful comment I've gotten this jam!

FUD by zenpj 2019-10-07T04:54:07Z

A whack-a-mole style game with some decent graphics and a cute soundtrack. The little beep every time a snack would fall down reminded me of the little beep you get at the grocery store. When I made my first mistake and the item got stuck I had a little chuckle, I think its a great way to represent a lost point of health. It is neat that the following snacks bounce off of it reminding you of your mistake.

One point of criticism is that the game did not seem follow the theme of starting off with nothing very much.

Overall I liked the experience! It was short but satisfying, kinda like that feeling when the vending machine gives you an extra free snack.

After Curfew by machinescreen 2023-05-03T08:26:58Z

Honestly amazing atmosphere. The complete silence followed by the buzzing of a machine really gives you the oh crap feeling of being caught. I had one drone very nearly capture me and having it just sitting across the corner was the most tense I've felt this Jam. The architecture of the cityscape also makes for some really interesting ways to navigate. Its simple but effective for raising tension. An excellent entry for the Jam!

Aunt Emmas by gagapete 2023-05-04T06:26:50Z

Very nice mood set by this game. I really like the cozy music in combination with the fun daily lifestyle. I will say that after playing for a few days my finger got tired of clicking so much haha. Also the phone call was a bit louder than I would like for a chill game. The sprite work was amazing though! All the different fruits and veggies looked so tasty! Also the day/night cycle was a good way to split up the time between hectic harvesting and selling and setting up for the next day.

Quantum Post by Eli Delventhal 2023-05-04T02:56:04Z

Really solid gameplay loop you made here! I like how it introduces the concept and then reinforces it through progressively harder and harder challenges. I unfortunately got stuck at the part with the cannons and the levers and couldn't get past it but I had a lot of fun with the bits that I did play. Also amazing job getting such a complete game done basically solo with art, dialogue, and sound! I think my favorite part was the pressure plate puzzle where I learned that past selves can interact with the world. Though having my past selves stab me in the back was a bit of a surprise haha. Nice work.

Packontra by CaptainDreamcast 2023-05-03T04:18:36Z

This game had a really fun intro and a surprisingly fun gameplay loop. I really appreciate how all the individual houses contained unique dialogue. At my best attempt I got 6 packages delivered! Great work!

Beelivery by Jejkobb 2023-05-04T06:37:23Z

Wow this is probably one of the best entries I've seen in this entire jam! Magnificent job with the animations and gameplay. Also that ending song is absolutely incredible. It took me a few tries to figure out what to do when I hit the log but once I figured it out I was very satisfied. I think that you did a really good job of taking a simple mechanic and adding a lot of depth to how the player can interact with it.

PACKGO: Ultimate Road Train by Arqcenick 2023-05-07T03:02:44Z

Really nice and neat artstyle! I also appreciate the easy to grasp but hard to master gameplay. The addition of extra carts makes things really interesting. I did experience some frustration when trying to handle the cart's turning radius but that was probably due to my inexperience with the controls.

Also regarding the sound design I love the little pop of picking up and delivering packages. Overall a fun and cute package of a game!

KissKiss Delivery by Jammin 2023-05-04T06:09:07Z

I like the theming of this game as well as the amount of effort that was put into the graphics. It was really cool seeing different avatars for all of the folks needing smooching. I did run into a bit where I hit the edge of the map but there wasn't like a wall or anything to indicate that so I just drove into it for a while haha. It was nice to deliver something to make people happy.

Solar Sandwiches by Guardaro 2023-05-03T05:35:11Z

Solar Sandwiches, that is an excellent jam game name. Like a really good name. I think that the theming, graphics, and audio are all very on point! The game was a bit too unwieldy for me to handle but I like the idea.

Pro Epistula Mori by squimmy 2023-05-03T05:28:14Z

This is an excellent layering of mechanics. I love how each letter leads you to wonder what crazy thing will happen next to heighten the stakes and the difficulty of each following letter. Also I appreciate how much detail was put into the dialogue, especially your "lives" system.

Only piece of criticism I have for this is that you can sometimes be killed inside the delivery points where you get dialogue but you respawn there too so its not too big an issue.

Oh and I want to say that I really appreciate the menu having settings for sound that play sfx and music so you can tune things just the way you like it! Very much appreciated for a jam game!

Freight and Furious by robinfaury 2023-05-03T05:40:02Z

Short and sweet! The ever accelerating music and train lead to some hectic maneuvering and some giggles I will admit. Its a shame that you can't really control anything towards the end of the game as you kinda just feel like you are careening into whatever is in front of you but I suppose that is also the point. I also really like the way that sometimes you see the rocks you've hit just flying upwards into the stratosphere.

Delivery Dash by Random Ideation Studios 2023-05-03T05:01:22Z

I actually kinda like the floaty jump. When combined with the air acceleration it lets you really choose where you wanna land. Was a bit unwieldy though with the high top speed of the player character. The SFX also got a bit loud when falling down a pit so I had to turn my sound down. Still the fact that this is a fully fleshed out game with 8 stages AND a whole story is pretty cool!

My favorite part of this whole game is definitely the graphics in concert with the music. I like the idea of a futuristic city with all the flying cars and robot people. All the neon gave me vibes of cyberpunk but with less of the grunge. Well done overall!

Game 1 by I wrote it myself 2023-05-02T04:37:48Z

The hand drawn transitions were very cute! I really liked how you jumped everywhere, really captured the spirit of a kid at a birthday party. It took a bit before I realized that objects floating away were memories being lost but I was able to get around 48 hours in without losing any memories. Good job!

Couriers' Route by Roroto Sic 2023-05-07T01:16:00Z

The theming of this game is probably its strongest point. The pixel art combined with the mood music and the harsh penalties of traversing the world all add together to give me a feeling which reminds me of the Oregon trail way back in the day. Overall gameplay loop held my attention long enough to get to the castle once with a ruined reputation but after that it kind of felt like a lot of save scumming till I picked the correct dialogue options. The fact that you don't get any information about the places you visit until you visit the node made the game feel like a lot of guesswork.

That being said wow you've packed a lot of nodes and branching dialogue into this jam :speech_balloon: :exclamation: Like seriously branching dialogue for almost every node, with variations on what happens when you say different things, or have different dialogue if you've visited another node. Very well fleshed out game for a jam game. Excellent job!

Groove 'n' Goods by ekaktusz 2023-05-03T05:10:24Z

Short and sweet, one of the more complete games I've seen this Jam. Never could I have guessed that in this Jam I would say "dang it this turtle wants Cocaine and all I have is weed" Good atmosphere which combines well with the graphics.

Only criticism I would say is that the gameplay doesn't seem to evolve much from the buy/sell loop but still I had fun with it for the time I played it. Also wanted to appreciate your super fluid and pretty pixely transitions. Overall a very well rounded game. Superb jam game!

Isles Express by Cinterre 2023-05-03T05:19:40Z

Like others have mentioned the controls are kind tough for someone who isn't used to this sort of thing. On further inspection I did notice you have a gear shifting menu in the top left which I really appreciate! I also like the audio design for feedback on your motor running.

PARCEL ROCKET by Braveskin 2023-05-03T04:24:18Z

Really cool game, the atmosphere with was excellent! With the music, background, and deep bass of the rocket thrumming it did a great job of feeling like one of the more epic package delivery games I've played in this Jam. I wasn't able to control it very well unfortunately but I appreciate the fact that your game was very on theme and has a lot of depth to the mechanics.

Manucci's Pizza Hunt by Jona Scheidig 2023-05-04T06:48:51Z

Beat em up Pizza delivery with a bike supermode! That's a pretty cool concept. I liked the little animations your guy had at the beginning and I also really appreciate having the boxes to demonstrate how you can build up the meter and go on a super bike rampage!!! :boom: :bike: :boom: Also that walk cycle with the square feet was pretty cool. I like the unique pixel art style your artist came up with.

One thing that I think could be improved is the ability to attack by holding down the mouse button. A lot of games this jam have me clicking a lot and my hand got kinda tired after a while. Oh and its a minor thing but the textboxes that the endboss makes are actually text fields I think. If you click em and start typing you can mess with what he is saying mid sentence. Which admittedly was kinda funny.

Also I don't want to spoil it but the joke you put in the game got me pretty good. I had a chuckle at that. Great Jam entry overall!

Aggressive Delivery by MixelPixel 2023-05-03T04:44:21Z

Really like the theming of this entry! All the elements had to do with package delivery in one way or another. I think its really innovative to use the package delivery to also deal with enemies. I did get somewhat annoyed when delivering packages only to find that the heavy package I picked up needed to be delivered all the way at the beginning of the level but other than that had a good time. I also really like the thwack that hitting an enemy with a package gives.

Love Letters by matthewrf 2023-05-04T07:13:14Z

Wonderful job for a first jam entry! Getting a game done on your own is really quite impressive. I really appreciate the tutorial baked right into your entry to the map and how it explains all the things needed to get up and going!

I do have a few nitpicks regarding the jumping. When jumping I sometimes wanted to go up high but timing the jumps together was somewhat finicky. Also when trying to land on some of the super thin platforms I would try and glide down onto it. However if you do this you have to rapidly tap left and right to not overshoot some of the platforms while holding space to keep gliding. Then once you land you automatically jump off the platform cause you are holding down the jump button lol. It would have been nice to have jump be bound to when you pressed the spacebar down rather than just having it jump if the player is on the ground and the space button is down.

That said, the little hop your bird does to walk around is so cute! I also really liked the simple but really effective gameplay shift that happens once you get the :cherries: For your first Jam this is crazy impressive, seriously well done!
