Really nice game. I didn't quite work out how to actually keep the fire alive. But that was perhaps my own foolishness. Enjoyed running round collecting things and avoiding dangers, though! Really nice aesthetics

Platform game runs well. A bit strange to find how to keep the fire alive. Many other games added a small tutorial!
The graphics are beautiful, altho the animations could be smoother. The idea and gameplay is very cool with that going though darkness and power-ups for better skills. Some better audio would be also appreciated. I hope that you continue the work on this game and release it as it looks promising.
Well done! You have to get far away from the fire to turn your torch on. Leaving that aside, the game is well made and I liked playing through it. At beginning I just ran around and just fall in some traps, but then I got the mood of the game and played along nicely. Thanks for your entry.
@anthony-pengelly you have to press e when you are next to the fire
Traps were a nice way to teleport back to the fire :D This game has a good ambiance/feel to it.
In general it's a pretty neat game. You could've explained more on the LD page, and yes I did read all of the instructions, but at first I didn't really understand how to keep the fire alive. But then things gradually cleared up.
I really liked the mood of the game. Didn't read the instructions, but the game was clear enough without them. I took one of the stick and then fell in one of the hole, losing it forever. It felt a little too harsh as the stick wasn't on the platform anymore. So I didn't use the sticks. I just rushed like a mad man to get to the end :).
I didn't know how to keep the fire alive but I liked the art and movement. Only minor nitpick as an Eagle Scout is that there is no "firekeeping badge."
@studionokoi yeah, we made that one up. the rest of them are legit
cool mood/aesthetic :) mechanics are a bit wonky I especially love the background assets - it looks superb
Interesting take on the "fire tending" version of this theme and certainly a decent amount of content to discover (particularly the bear with the honey). I will say that the platforming felt a little off (such as some surfaces clearly having rounded collision while appearing straight-edged) and the some gameplay elements (such as the traps and the animals stealing my twigs) proved more annoying than fun. Nevertheless, a good effort.
Nice game :) I love the colours and lighting they add a lot of dimension and atmosphere to the game x
The nice platformer with awesome art! I really liked the idea that you need to find improvements for the main character and go to those places where you could not reach before. But for me it was very hard to find sticks. In addition, in the beginning I died several times and lost many sticks so it was impossible to keep the fire alive :( Maybe you can add more sticks on the level. Great job!
Graphically pleasing, it has some 2000-ish flash games vibes. Controls are a bit clunky, and sometimes traps positioning it slighlty annoying. I'd have loved to see some more on level design, as it is kind of linear to finish. Overall this is a funny little game, a good job for your first attempt!
This was a nice one! Wanted to try it out a couple of times to get further and further! ^_^
i liked the art and the atmosphere, and apreciate all games that use light as the main mechanic. i wish the sticks would re-spawn though, because i died a lot at first!
A nice game, i like the idea to make badges for differents attribues and make progress in the levls, i like also the ambiance with the sound, but the hunter traps are raging... ha
That was entertaining. It has a nice level design, the audio and the art were on point. Sometimes there were some creatures that appeared too fast and I didn't know exactly what they did, though. Nice game :)
@anagf the raccoons were stealing your sticks, they were mostly there to surprise or startle you.
I like this game's art style and sound. I think the field of view should be wider, because even when I am going slowly it's hard to see what's there just in front of you. Anyway, that's a cool concept and I really enjoyed playing it.
That guy sure likes dying for his fire! Cute puzzler :)
It's missing a lot of visual and sound feedback to tell us how to do certain actions or the presence of certain things. For example, having to press the down arrow to light the campfire is not necessarily intuitive for everyone.
loved the atmosphere, and the metroidvania-esque upgrades that the badges gave. Would like to see that extended. I kept falling down the pits and dying, but it looks like you mapped out an underground section as well?
@amkingtrp we haven't really mapped it out... (yet?) we might in the future, who knows
I loved this game. The art is quite nice. The controls are smooth and the badges add very enjoyable features. I played this for 25 minutes!
@convg wow 25 minutes is a long time. glad you liked it !
Very good. I liked the art and absolutely loved the mood the piano loop adds. The thing that bothered me the most - my torch only ignited when i stepped out of the fire light's radius. Overall - great job.
Nice little platformer! I love the level design as well, but I wish there's more action I can do, like with the raccoon for example. But overall very nice game!
cute little game.. love the graphic and audio too. good job
Beat it the second time, cool game
Quite little fun game. I love games with upgrades and I actually manage to finish
I enjoyed playing this game. At first i died a couple of times, because i was falling down into holes I couldn't see because of low light. But then I got used to it and found this game really interesting. Good job.
I kept dying and losing the sticks all the time, but managed to finish it in first try. I really liked it. I think that the light before the upgrade is too small, i fell in the water and didn't even know it was water. Same goes for the pit at the left. The graphics and overall atmosphere are really pleasant, it was nice walking around, exploring the place and finding all the upgrades.
Realy a beautiful game. With a realy good mood. I played it several times in order to end it. Congrats!!
The art is neat, it's engaging to unlock several abilities throughout exploration. Nice job !
Imagine picking up a badge and suddenly jump 2 meters high :D
Really cool power-up system and neat graphics!
A pretty fun game to play.
I enjoyed the game. However it became a guessing game as the player can barely see what's ahead of them. Also keep in mind some players have crappy screens and can't see anything.
However, great entry. Visuals, audio and controls are smooth!
Interesting game my friend. Gotta love games about fire :]
Nice one! I like how you told a little story around the theme, as opposed to just having it be reflected by the gameplay as many games do. The atmosphere is very nice. Also a cute character you have there.
Only nitpick I have is that it's very easy to die even if you know what awaits you, simply due to the low visible range. Oh yeah, and I really don't know what all the badges do - I think the bird one made me jump higher? For the rest, I didn't notice whether anything changed. And I either misunderstood something or maybe there was a bug - at one point I'm reasonably sure I collected a stick, then went back to the fire, but pressing E didn't do anything and the fire wasn't restored. So not sure what happened there!
Still very good job, had fun playing this. :)
The additional badges are a cool idea! Not being able to tell exactly what each badge does made it a bit confusing though.
@very-dark-lord @scott-steffes yeah i guess that's a problem that we have because i've started seeing more complaints about it. we thought we made them obvious but i guess we were wrong. (explanations are in the instructions menu though)
@doritolord Oh well, I admit I was too lazy to open the instructions menu as I expected them to just contain the controls which I had already read. Probably should be more patient! And looking at it now, the menu is of course sufficient - I guess it might have made sense to just show it automatically once when starting the game for the first time, although I agree that in principle "leaving it up to the player" also makes sense. I probably *would* have read it weren't it for the Controls description outside the game I saw beforehand. :D
I made a giant fluffy friend and earned my firekeeper badge! And you really managed to capture the fluff! Loved all the graphics in this game, but the bear was my favorite.
The graphics also worked well in creating a great atmosphere. The boy scout with his little torch who always looked kinda worried, the illumination caused by the torch and the fire, all those really gave it a stuck in a dark world feeling (spoilers: which then gets broken through by the light near the firekeeper badge, the literal light at the end, that was a nice touch). The BGM was also great for this, it added a hint of mystery, I thought it was great. Gameplay-wise I thought the level was designed very well, I never felt lost, but still had a good time exploring for sticks. A great take on the theme!
Good game ! I liked the simple gameplay and how the game looks (a fan of big bears x) Keep up the good work !
Nice game and good looking graphics. After a minute or so being in the dark I realized that I couldnt really figuring out how much fire / energy (whatever you want to call it) is left. The black border of the progress bar made it hard to see properly. Besides of that fun game.
I am now a fully fledged scout with my "fed a bear honey" badge.
The bear at the end is just the best! So cuddly. The graphics are quite nice and the music very pleasant. Limited field of vision definitely adds to the atmosphere. I don't know if there is any actual danger of fire running out, casue I screwed up platforming many times, had to backtrack and so on, and still I managed just fine with the fire.
It is a very nice jam job! The theme you went for is a bit tired, in my opinion, as there are so many "find stuff and put it in the fire" games this jam. But the spin you put on this formula is very cool and makes the game unique.
god job!,I got to where you give honey to the bear.
Nice graphics and good parallax. Poor boy, give him some shoes! Simple platformer with creative items. It's really nice that the powerups and the changes persist when you die. Great work!
I liked this tiny "metroidvania" quite a bit.
I didn't really have much trouble playing the game through as there seemed to be infinite lives and the fire didn't burn out that fast either. Several of my wood sticks got "stolen" by the animals that bumped into me and I didn't have much of an issue to get to the end.
The audio loop was a bit awkward as it didn't seem to loop in a seemless place.
The controls were fine. Sometimes on the edge of the platforms it felt the character drops too early but I didn't really have any other issue with controls.
Perhaps my favorite thing was to be able to see a small glimpse to the upper platform, just enough to see there's some huge creature waiting. Not yet able to get there but I can see something is there! That kind of moments in metroidvania style games are great!
Nice music and art, created a nice forest atmosphere.
Jump sound was ok in terms of satisfaction, but not really fitting the mood. Along with jump animation felt a bit silly. Maybe that was the point - would have actually given points in humor for that.
Platforming was ok, though jumping off ledges should be a bit more forgiving to feel better.
Deaths were a little abrupt, but got used it it, and the respawn was fast, so it was ok since there were quite a few deaths.
Felt like it was a bit too easy - even the branch stealing critters didn't feel threatening enough to dodge, and traps were more annoying due to having to start from beginning rather than dangerous for the loss of branch.
Overall, it was quite a relaxing experience.
Decent little game, not really anything to say that hasn't been commented here already. Good job.
I like the graphics and the game plays pretty nice
neat game and great mood ! well done
That was an a amazing concept! I just played the game and managed to give the honey to the bear haha! Well done
id be a terrible boy scout
Pretty fun! Managed to get all the badges without feeding the campfire though, not sure if it is intended. I very much like the character graphics. Also the platforming was nice, though it could use some coyotte time :)
Nice entry!
The overall design is very smart!
Glad I saw the honey early and figured out how to get it, thought it was for the badger, glad I got it to get past the bear. Fun game, well executed.
Great job!
The game is small as it should be, and the exploration feeling is good. The music and art are nice. Nice level design.
We are so used to coyote time now that it feels quite wrong not to have it in any platforming game. My guess is you didn't have time to add it and that's ok!
Thanks for the game!
I really loved the explorative part. The music is nice and soothing. Nice entry
I really liked the design, kinda nostalgic for me, where you have to 'unlock' certain skills to get to items that then allow you to progress (e.g. the high-jump to get to the honey etc :sunglasses: ). That was well though-out, I think! The background crackling noise of the fire helped set the mood for me, but some very low volume music would make that even more complete. The initial visibility radius could have been a tiny bit larger I think, because the first few times I died I didn't realize that certain changes are permanent (and I thought I was starting over entirely every time without any visual feedback). All of that said though, I definitely enjoyed playing this and it is a solid entry overall! Thanks!
Very nice Idea. it feels Good.
Really good game! I played right to the end and it was great all the way! I enjoyed the gameplay overall, platforming and watching for traps. I felt really invested in ensuring the safety of my character, while not going too slow that the fire died out (the sticks were quite helpful then). It was actually quite intense when I got to new areas and was closer to completion (but the fire was running low), as I really wanted to keep going until I won. It worked really well! All the badges and how they helped you get to new areas was well planned and designed! They worked really well and gave a clear and helpful indication of progress! The high jump badge was obviously important, but the one that made your light bigger was really good too (as I could see further ahead). This game is really well made! Some improvements could involve making sure the audio doesn't cut slightly and loops smoothly. Also, that blue tree in your pictures looks really good and its texture and similar textures on the rocks and branches throughout the level would add to the art beauty. While you had to complete the game in a timely fashion, some more focus could be placed on the fire to help with the theme. But really, these are just small ideas/improvements that would just add to this really good game of yours. To summarise, the mood and atmosphere is amazing and really captures you and I think you've done an amazing job! Overall, your game is great and well made! I had fun and it was a really cool experience!
P.S. I think I'm the 100th person to rate so well done, I'm really happy for you! (We are also really close). All the best with your game and the score reveal tomorrow!
Nice game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/N721nAhkovk
