I thought this was a very cute submission! The graphics looked really great for a jam game, but I think that it's held back a little bit by the finicky camera and controls. I really did enjoy seeing the world though!

fictions 2019-10-07 21:40

Amazing art <3

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-07 22:10

@thepiratenun yeah that is my one regret that I wasn’t able to figure out how to make objects not block your view when dragging them >_< thank you for rating though!

@fictions thank you! :3

tricky-fat-cat 2019-10-07 22:10

I like everything in this game, except the camera, it's really distracting and make the game worse than it could be. Anyway, other parts of the game are well made!

banjaxe 2019-10-08 03:10

Beautiful enviroment, really nice art assets, models, textures, lighting, audio, etc. I managed to get a few of the objects up the top but I got stuck on a few. Unfortuntely I had to stop because the camera movement was making me feel a bit motion sick. I think the combination of the keyboard and the cursor both affecting the camera made it feel like I could never quite look where I wanted to. Other than that I liked everything about it. Very impressive!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 04:14

@banjaxe I’m sorry to hear that you weren’t able to finish the game on account if the camera :( That was something I was trying to fix for several hours. Learned a lot about cameras at least! Maybe I can make a post-jam build that fixes the camera issue so you can finish it.

mrtroy 2019-10-08 06:24

The bugs are creepy just staring at you always. I managed to escape the tide pool! That was fun, a tad frustrating (with the camera as mentioned above) but once I got use to it I won. I didn't realize you couldn't grab items anywhere, I got lucky until the board. Then I came back to this page and saw the grab points.

Good job!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 12:46

@mrtroy im so glad you were able to play to the end! ^o^ yeah I would definitely change aspects of the design given another day but alas!

vincentvincent 2019-10-08 14:46

Amazing graphics! It's beautiful:)

almighty-games 2019-10-08 15:43

The art/graphics were absolutely amazing. The music loop was a bit short, but fortunately nice enough so it was not irritating. I liked the intro how it seamlessly went from main menu to playing the game. Now, let's get into the game mechanics. I'll just say it like it is... It felt like an arm-wrestling match. There were moments when I thought I was going to be able to intentionally move or look around in a particular direction, but then I would lose the battle and be left staring into the sky or down at the ground. One last point... I had no idea what the object of the game was. There were objects I could pickup, push, and I could jump and swim and do stuff, but never ended up figuring out anything useful to do.

dr4g0nsoul 2019-10-08 17:50

Really good looking game ^^

itsdanidre 2019-10-08 17:56

Grapphics are nice, cute crab, and smooth music. As for gameplay, I find the physics everywhere amazing. Yet, it did make me dizzy overtime so I had to inevitably exist before carrying all the items up to the pillar :sob:

susumu-asaga 2019-10-08 17:57

Really cute game, the cutest main character in the entire LD45, had lots of fun, only problem that I had was with the camera.

kekkodude 2019-10-08 17:58

The camera was a bit disorientating for me and the pulling mechanics felt disconnected, as in, i did not feel i had any real control over what i was manipulating.

Wonderfull idea, lovely atmosphere and the art is amazing! the music is doing good for the game as well, fit's neat!

hkspadez 2019-10-08 18:04

great looking game! but the controls/camera felt a bit disorienting.

mattwagar 2019-10-08 18:16

Spectacular art direction, and such a cool player controller. This game fits the theme so well, has such a great message, and everything about it is so cute. With a bit more polish I could definitely see this being shippable. Great Job!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 18:17

@almighty-games @dr4g0nsoul @itsdanidre @susumu-asaga @kekkodude thank you all so much for your feedback :) I'm very glad you like the art and music! We worked really hard on making the game as cute as possible! As for the camera, that was a part we really struggled with. However, I've released a post-jam version that completely fixed the camera issue and makes it actually finishable hehe. It's on the itch.io game page if you're interested ^_^

palinalif 2019-10-08 20:31

As a fellow adorable shell animal lover I approve of this game :P And I appreciate the information about the bugs in the description!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 21:04

@palinalif thank you! I thoroughly appreciate that you read the instructions hehe

yaen 2019-10-08 21:24

Love it, the crab is sooo cute! I like the movement system of climbing and would be interested to see what else you could do with that mechanic. Quite reminiscent of Grow Up / Grow Home (both games I really enjoyed). I really liked the detail that the music changed when you go underwater. I love dynamic soundtracks like that. Big plus on the audio side for that alone!

The point of collecting the trash was not immediately clear to me as the trash mostly didn't stay on top of the pillar. That may be fixed if the pieces automatically stuck in place at the top. Just a minor thing though. Sometimes I wished the camera was a little more zoomed out for better control but it was quite interesting to get this low-angle from the little critter's perspective.

Overall, very solid title, great job, everyone!

baconsenpaii 2019-10-08 21:25

the camera feels like it could do with a bit of zooming out and tweaking, even in the post-jam version, but other than that its a fun puzzle game. the graphics and sound are also really nice, and the splash effects when jumping in the water were a pleasant surprise when i first noticed them.

overall, a beautiful game

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 21:33

@yaen Thanks! :D Yeah I had toyed with the idea of having them stick in their final position, but then what happens if someone picks up the scredriver first, when that's supposed to be the top item? Does it just float there? I didn't have time to design different permutaions that would work so I went with this approach. I'm so glad you had fun ^_^

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-08 21:34

@baconsenpaii thanks so much for playing! Yeah I tried to get as much polish as I could such as the splashes and some dynamic audio. Yeah the camera was a struggle haha

benpeterson 2019-10-08 22:53

well holy crap that's a graphical 5 if i ever saw one. didn't accomplish much in the way of objectives but grabbed some fish around and was blown away by the graphics this is awesome

jaydubbyasee 2019-10-08 23:15

The character design and art in general was super cute! Like many others have mentioned, the camera needs some work. The ability zoom out with mouse wheel and move your character's forward direction independent of the camera angle would make it a lot easier to control, and also let us spend more time looking at that crab face.

philomory 2019-10-08 23:41

This is one of the nicest looking LD games I've seen. I found it _really_ hard to accomplish anything, but it was pretty entertaining just as sandbox to bounce around, anyway.

almighty-games 2019-10-09 00:31

@rebecca-harrison It was the fixed updated version that I played. "Tidepool_Post_Jam_CameraFix.zip"

joltjab 2019-10-09 04:02

Hey thanks everyone for the feedback and for playing the game!

@benpeterson Thanks man! @rebecca-harrison made most of the environment and prop stuff. She did an awesome job!

@jaydubbyasee I worked hard on the character design so I'm glad you liked it :D . Yeah the camera was a bit of a struggle. We were trying something new to fit with the game's design but I guess it didn't work. Thanks for the suggestions too!

@philomory I'm glad you like the look of the game! Though I'm sorry to hear you had a hard time accomplishing stuff in it.

joel-davis 2019-10-09 04:37

Very cool! The game looks amazing and the crab has a ton of personality. I was able to figure out how to climb and drag stuff around but I wasn't really sure what the goal was or how to get out of the tidepool. I really liked the two handed climbing mechanic, I think a less springy and chaotic version that focused on that would be amazing.

despdair 2019-10-09 13:22

controls makes game very hard to play, I can barely move to where I want to. other than that graphics are cool and main idea is valuable. I think you can extend this and use it to spread some awareness.

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 13:59

@almighty-games Did you try climbing to the top of the central pillar? The objective of the game is only shown once you go up there. I had assumed that people would try to escape the tidepool through there, but looks like some people didn't get my implications. U_U Needed more playtesting I suppose.

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 14:00

@joel-davis THanks for playing! :D GLad you liked it hehe. Did you go up to the top of the central pillar? And yeah we had the opportunity to make the climbing less springy but it felt more fun this way ;P Less strategic, certainly, but fun!

squeele 2019-10-09 14:26

Beautiful game! I had some issues with the camera, but the art and overall feel of the game is top notch!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 14:35

@squeele thank you! :D We really appreciate it

crazyhomeboys 2019-10-09 16:15

I remind you on LD41, you impressed me a lot that time with "On The Fly" and again you have done it. The art ... is incredible, the game concept is very good and in all sections as always super achieved and polished.

PS: I've been walking for a while just to see at every detail as if it were a walking simulator :D

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 16:23

@crazyhomeboys I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I really put my heart into the colors and lighting and environment of the game, and I'm happy it came through ^_^ I look forward to making you new games to enjoy for every future jam!

hkspadez 2019-10-09 18:27

such a fun and beautiful game. with this amount of polish could take this so much further than a jam game.

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 18:50

@hkspadez thank you! :)

dikkop 2019-10-09 22:05

Nice game! Controls were a bit clunky but the in-and-out of water effect is pretty smooth!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-09 22:39

@dikkop thank you! Glad you liked it! :D

bilalch213 2019-10-10 15:41

Awesome graphics and physics! Controls are not good enough tho. I really liked the overall look and the environment. This game has great potential. Fantastic entry!

humphreysmedia 2019-10-10 18:52

Great game! Movement could've been a smidge smoother, but other than that what great graphics! I may have been sent from a certain sea shell maker

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-10 19:10

@bilalch213 thank you! Yeah the controls were odd haha.

@humphreysmedia thank you! Yeah the movement could be better for sure :P Tell Elysia hi from me ^_^

mr-bold 2019-10-10 19:52

Really cool!! I,ve only missed a better camera and more polished controls. BTW, graphics and sound are great. God job!!

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-10 19:55

@mr-bold Thank you! We really appreciate it ^o^ And yeah if you want to play a more polished version the post-jam version is a lot more playable hehe

joellikespigs 2019-10-10 21:00

beautiful game that's positively oozing with charm, great work and adorable character design. It's just a shame I felt like I was wrestling with the controls to actually play it. I did manage to free the crab but I never did feel like I learnt how use the climbing mechanic - but with a bit more time I feel like this game could lead into a really fun platformer / adventure game and I was fully immersed the moment the game started straight from the crab turning away from the camera on the start menu.

Also did one of the rocks have a face? I was playing this in the dark and it spooked me haha. crab scare.png

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-10 21:58

@joellikespigs thank you! :D Yeah the climbing mechanic is a bit strange, basically your claw sticks to wherever you click on the ground/walls. Your body moves towards the point. If both claws are grabbing the walls, your body will move to the midpoint, so the idea is to kind of shimmy up walls one claw at a time :P If you want to try a less-painful version I'd highly reccomend the post-jam build. It solves a lot of the original issues. Also hehe I dodn't mean to put a face on a rock >o< maybe just a weird coincidence? Glad you liked it though!

sillyman987 2019-10-11 12:57

Great game!!!

pestodesign 2019-10-12 10:47

Great graphics and very cute overall design! And I like the environmental idea. Control was very confusing though, I ended up spinning around a lot :D :blowfish:

wheffle 2019-10-14 00:14

Awesome charming game! The style is excellent, I really love it. The climbing mechanics kind of reminding me of Grow Home, one of my favorite games. I like the simplicity of the ideas as well. There was a bit of physics jank, but that's hard to avoid in a physics-based 3D game made during a game jam. The slight music change when you go underwater is a nice touch, although it could use a little synchronizing with the above-water music. I had a lot of fun, really nice entry!

karanveer 2019-10-18 08:50

after playing this game...the audio is decent but what had me are the art work and the mechanics..achieving as those in such a restricted time and being able to actually make it work ...PRETTY good...and the challenge where you have to make sure the player enjoys it ...you have done a great job. GG! :D

humphreysmedia 2019-10-20 13:37

Hey, just to let you know I’ve been making Ludum Dare 45 gameplay videos and I’ve put your game in my video! You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/S9nZaGbYfVE

thomas-bringer 2019-10-20 17:59

Amazing game! I absolutely love the artstyle & game world. Feels great to explore the underwater world. It was a bit hard for me to grab objects, though. Congrats on making this cool game! :D

johnnysix 2019-10-20 20:47

Great art and theme for this one. I struggled with the climbing mechanic, which I'd stuggle with making work over a month or so, let alone three days. Epic work with the shaders, particularly the underwater effect.

ld45_db-063.jpg

williwiderstand 2019-10-20 21:40

love the graphics and I love the crabs animation. Very well rounded game, well done!

ohsqueezy 2019-10-21 19:41

this crab is really quite a menace lol and it looks like a roomba I mean think about the peaceful nature of this ecosystem if it weren't for the crab but I guess it's also helping clean up the water by recycling and if I had magic claws I would do the same and I did

rodrigo-denubila 2019-10-22 12:07

Very interesting game. Graphics are awesome and the animations are great too. Unfortunately the camera and the controls are too buggy wich makes the game very hard to play. But overall is a great entry. Good job!

xenoxygene 2019-10-23 22:34

Visuals were great! And the controls definitely earned you some points in the Humor category ^^

ava-skoog 2019-10-29 12:26

Dang it, I was finally getting around to this but it's broken and won't run on Mac. ;-; Any others had this issue?

rebecca-harrison 2019-10-29 15:50

@ava-skoog yeah sorry :( I haven't been able to get it to run on Mac. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. A friend had tested it and said it worked but now I'm not sure what they did.

ava-skoog 2019-10-29 18:36

Aww, what a bummer. :C

elysiagriffin 2019-10-30 00:04

YEEE! LOOK AT THAT #30 IN ART! GO TEAM! Thank you Jolt & Rebecca for letting me join in and help with "textures" LOL.
