An interesting combination. Would be nice if you could retain the tower positions when you retry. Cannon was also a little bit too powerful, could just shoot right to the end on the last level. Had fun though, was a small but fairly complete game. Also thank you for playing our game :smiley_cat:

@NekoMkII Yeah, for the sake of time I did a hard reload of the level when you retry and that makes it pretty tough to get the towers to persist. I wish they would, too... Testing levels was a pain. Thanks a ton for playing!

Damn this game is very polished. The music and the graphics are nice. Also very nice combination of genres. Overall a really good game!

@Shape Thanks so much! I'll pass this along to the graphics/music folks ;)
Who would have thought that you can create a puzzle game from minigolf. It kind of reminds me of Rock of Ages. But yes, if there is something to improve, it's the level reset. Fortunately there isn't much to put back, so it's not a huge deal. Nice work!

@Klerembot I hadn't heard of Rock of Ages, but gave it a google and it looks crazy. Glad the level reset wasn't too much of a hassle. Thanks for playing!
Very fun game although it seems too easy with the cannon. Great work!

@Ghost-Pandora Yeah, as much as I like the cannon, the levels could maybe use some tweaking to accommodate it... Thanks for the feedback!

The combination is interesting, it can work on a full game, i really like the idea. Your Golf engine is super nice, i love the control and the physic of it ! I had a good time playing your game : )
I loved your idea, it's so creative! The game is pretty hard, but I really liked the idea of putting structures to help you get a hole-in-one (and the 3D models look very nice). Congrats on your game!

This game was super addictive! I really enjoyed working out the solutions to the puzzles and watching the ball finally go in the hole where it belongs  It was super satisfying. Simple but fun! Congrats!
The only feedback I have is combining the tower placement and golf putt into one loop as opposed to separating them out. There could just be two buttons, retry and clear. I knew I had the correct solution but my putt was off -- it would have been nice to keep the tower placements without having to place them over and over when all I needed to do was get the putting angle and power right. When I'm ready to putt I could click on the ball and start the aim / power state.
Great entry!
I think this is the invigoration that all golf games should have :P I like the individual sound effects given to each towers function. It's more like a tower 'offense' game

I finished the game, it ended before I was ready and now I crave for more. The puzzles are so fun and easily one of my favorites. I would like to suggest that retrying doesn't reset the level and only resets the ball since sometimes only slight changes are needed. And the cannon control was not very obvious, so I think it could be enhanced. Otherwise the game is totally great and only needs a polishes to be perfect.
That game was a blast, the screenshots don't do it justice. I really enjoyed the effect the main menu had, kind like it was a golf flag. There was a bug where when firing out of the cannon the ball can go over walls. I also wish there was a victory screen for finishing but that's about it. Great game guys!
Although I find the combination interesting, I felt the execution of the game lost some of the randomnesses of golf and the towers felt out of place. I just can't shake the feeling that the genres would have combined better if the game was not grid-based, you could place towers on the green areas and get a challenge from moving obstacles.
Overall I love the polish of the game, with the art, music and puzzle design.
That was a lot of fun actually! I cheated my way through the wall colliders a few times, but it was such a fun simple concept. Would make a great mobile game! Overall, I liked it a lot.

@SniperA Thanks so much!
@HPMNK Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@makiyoshi Thanks! I'll pass that along the the modeler.
@swav_gav Yeah, agreed, clearing tower placements isn't ideal. Combining the two modes is an interesting idea, actually. And I'm super happy to hear you liked it!
@Justintime4u2bu Hah, tower-offense. I may just steal that. Thanks!
@Yetman Good note on the cannon controls. Maybe an arrow pointing out when the ball is in it?
@MrBreadMan Thanks! And good idea on the victory screen. And actually, firing over walls was the intended behaviour! It's not super obvious though. Maybe a shadow under the ball to show that it's flying? Ah well, 72 hours and all.
@NickMarcha Although I never considered taking this off-grid, there was definitely talk about putting things like drawbridges or honey traps on the green, so your suggestions aren't too far off from reality! Thanks for playing!
@jaredmercer Thanks so much! I'll have to keep that in mind ;)
Wow, your game works really well! In the beginning it's not super obvious how the towers work, but you get it quickly. The cannon tower makes things a bit easy once you notice you can just roll over the wall. But well, I guess later levels would have been more difficult - and I definitely wanted to play on once I finished the 7 levels ;)
The graphics, simple as they may be, actually work pretty well and the audio design is amazing - I love that song, really sets the right minigolfing mood!
Great job, have a fish <3 🐟

@Beebo Studios Yeah, I wasn't sure how many folk would catch on to the cannon but you all seem to have jumped right on board. And of course, more levels were on the agenda but... Time constraints. You know.
I'm so glad you liked it, though, and I'll cherish the fish forever!

Heya, so as promised, I played through your game just now, I think it hits the perfect notes for a nice minigolf game. The art was nice and simple, part of me liked that it was entirely top down but another part of me would've liked to see an isometric camera or even fully 3D from behind the ball. Seeing the ball get pulled slightly towards the hole was perfect, and made this game immensely enjoyable without any of the frustrations of minigolf, well done!
You absolutely nailed the audio in this, the music is calm and relaxing, and hearing the satisfying tick of the golf ball being hit and the incredibly gratifying putting sound of the ball hitting the hole was perfect.
I'm not too sure about this actually being tower defense though, it's more of a... minigolf course puzzle game, I get they're towers, but it's sort of negligible especially since your goal is to putt the golf ball and not to prevent it from being putt.
If anything the thing I would change the most would be to have the towers stay on retry and to show their influence, this makes setting things up a lot clearer and I'll know where I need to make the ball go. Aiming the cannon myself was also a bit.. easy, why not have it rotate on it's own? You could even mess around with the rotation speed if you want to make variants of it, timing becomes more of a thing then, which is perfect for a minigolf game (just think of those real minigolf courses with the windmills and such).
I absolutely wanted to play more after those 7 holes and I was kinda put down when I reached the end. It was immensely fun and really nice and quick as well, just some quick minigolf matches in between working.
If you are going to continue development on this game consider going a bit more towards actual minigolf part and have strokes in there as well, so that you can work with score! The hole in one mode (this current game) could be a game mode of the game itself! And definitely consider bringing this out on mobile devices, it would work amazing on there. I can already see myself playing this during my commute to uni!
All in all, a very fun, relaxing game with a lot of promise! Well done!

@Densin Thanks so much for the in-depth write up! It goes a long way. Agreed, some sort of 3D view after the putt that follows the ball would be super cool. Having cannons rotate on their own is a clever idea! I hadn't even thought of that, and bringing a timing element into the game would be really fun. I'm super glad to hear you liked it, though, and I'll be sure to pass on the good word to the audio/graphics folks! Thanks for playing!

@Julink Weird, I've never seen this before. What are you running it on? Was this after the Unity dialogue?
I really enjoyed playing! I think the two themes you picked to mash up worked really well together! I also enjoyed the very upbeat music! One criticism is that perhaps there could have been a little more art instead of the plain walls. I think making those a simple brick wall or something could make it all the more like a mini putt-putt course. Overall dope game though!

2018-04-26 22:38
@Patrick Sweeney Yeah, I agree, some art (or maybe even models!) would liven up the field a little. Good note, and thanks for playing!
Great idea, and well executed! The controls and physics worked well, and nice touch that you can aim the cannon tower. I think a little perspective instead of orthographic view would have looked nice. The windmill and cannon tower 3D icon models in the menu are transparent, looks weird that you can see the wings on the backside of the mill. Other than that, great entry, and really fun to play!
I don't really see the tower defense part, but It is a fun game, to be fair the puzles are not very difficult, but that's obviously what I would expect for a ludum dare, the mechanics are nice, and the idea of adding active modifiers to the minigolf game, seems nice for me, because is something you could not do irl, so this version is better : p To give some more feedback, the background looks nice as a background but sometimes it does weird waves and take the attention of the game, and is a bit distracting, maybe make it softer to prevent it : )

Good execution and clever puzzle-age. I really liked the sound effect for the cannon tower. One suggestion would be to leave buildings in place when you retry, instead of having to place all the pieces again.

@gimbalock Yeah, the menu presented an interesting problem... Apparently Unity renders RenderTextures from back to front, and I didn't have the expertise to fix it in the 72 hour window. And good note on the perspective camera! I'll have to load this up again and see how it'd look. Thanks for playing!
@mrPenguin Yeah, I feel like minigolf needs to be crossed with laser tag and a dinosaur to really shine in real life ;) And good to know about the background! It was my first time playing with cloth physics and I got a little carried away... Thanks for the feedback!

This is a really clever idea. Quite well executed too. I'd see a game like this in a big scale could be pretty good, with bigger maps with maybe 3-4 paths and an array of different towers to use. Good work :)

2018-04-27 04:45
@tay Thanks! There's a lot of stuff that never got implemented, so maybe it's a possibility someday... Time will tell.
Who knew a tower defense golf game would make such a good puzzle game! I was confused at first but once I realized what was I was supposed to do with the towers I startled my cat by laughing out loud. This was a lot of fun!
Super cool idea! I'd say it's more Puzzle x Golf than Tower Defense x Golf. Very well polished! As I saw someone else mention, it would be great if the board didn't reset when you have to retry. Very well polished, could use some more developed & stylized graphics, would be nice to have a bit of a tutorial, and obviously some more towers would be awesome. Keep in mind this advice is for when you develop this further(which you should) not critiques of the LD version. Super well done!

It's fun and I liked the music! And it has good pozzle designs, It would have been nice that when you fail and retry the towers stayed in place, that way is more easy and quick to try another solution. But you've made a good job!

It's an uncanny combination, so you get full theme points on that one!
I was quite bummed about the reset not persisting tower placements, but I'm not sure whether or not I like the fact that ball physics don't really work like in normal minigolf games. I feel it made for rather unforeseeable outcomes since you still needed to aim but did not have the control as is expected (cannot do trickshots or much anything else than just launch the ball at a turret). Having that control makes for harder puzzle designs, but it's my two cents in any case.
It is a solid entry none the less. Well done!
So good! It's been mentioned to death, but yeah it would be pretty nice if the towers didn't disappear every retry. I also kinda wish you could control the ball's power a bit more directly (like base it on the mouse's distance instead of bouncing it back and forth). But you know what? The 3D models are great, the credits are funny, and the number of (very clever) levels is perfect for a jam game. That's a thumbs up from me!
morrilet
2018-04-28 17:33
@devastus That's an interesting take on it. There were a couple levels that we fiddled with that very much more skill-based, but it's true, you still only get the one shot and then it's in the hands of the towers. Thanks for the feedback!
@cool-summit Yeah, the towers not resetting is my biggest regret this time around. Good note about the more direct control, though. When I was testing levels (near the end, unfortunately) I felt a similar way. It's a little more intuitive to click and drag, methinks. Thanks for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I love the idea for this game, but it would be great if it was easier to control power when you first hits the ball. Overall a interesting and fun little LD game.

I didn't pay attention to the arrow and got stuck in here for a while because of poor cannon placement.
Puttsy_2018-04-29_12-21-49.png
This puzzle game is an incredible mash up of well known genres. Solid for most of the part and very intuitive (it was my own fault not seeing that the cannon tower had an entry spot. I thought it'd fire a bomb or something to make the ball jump). It looks and plays great, although sometimes, I felt that the ball wouldn't trigger the towers or go as far as expected.
I overall had a great experience with this game, although I did have a lot of problems on the first level with the cannon, and that's aside from my oversight. At times, the ball would not trigger the spring trap, or would be hit but not go far enough. There was even one time where the putter trap pushed it out of the stage. It wasn't much of a problem, but resetting the tower placement after every failure - specially those that occurred before I could test if the rest of the towers were going to work - was an annoyance.
Still, this is one of the most polished and fun games I've played on the jam. Excellent work! [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) really would like to see more games like these. Keep up the good work!
I like the combination, it's a cool little puzzle game. It's fun, but a little design advice would be to let the player choose if he wants the board cleared from towers when he loses. I want to be able to freely move the towers around and experiment with the outcome. It wouldn't hurt the game at all.
mza
2018-04-29 18:17
I liked the game and its simplicity generally. A nice unique blend of genres. I think its a great game made under 72 hours. The only suggestion I have is to keep the towers on the field after every failed attempt.
I know it's been discussed already, but definitely leave towers placed on retry. That will make the game feel even more fun.
I wouldn't really call this game tower defense, but it does make a compelling and satisfying puzzle game.
The 7 levels I played were quite good, but easy. I haven't seen a level yet that proves this concept can be challenging. But I believe it can be. More complex tower types might do it for you.
Putter towers not triggering is what made me retry the most. Giving them a slightly bigger trigger area would probably fix that.
I'm not sure how well it fits the "incompatible genres" theme, but I could see this being made into a commercial game in the $5-20 range. Nice job.

Hahahaha very good game, really enjoyable. when are you launching the second??? :P
Pretty fun game, cool idea. This could be a good mobile game. In the last few levels there seem to be parts where you can win the level just using the cannon, unsure if this was intentional or not but it made the last couple levels really easy. If you could take some time to check out [my game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ludum-dare-41-placeholder-1) as well I'd appreciate it!

@moski Hey, thanks! The cannons were actually the whole reason I added the arrows in the first place. They were a little hard to read, I get it. And yeah, the hit-boxes for the putters are a little smaller than a grid square and could maybe be increased. Thanks for the awesome feedback and thanks for playing!
@fox-in-sox Yeah, totally agreed. The tower reset was more of a shortcut in development than any meaningful design decision, and it's my most regrettable choice yet. Thanks for playing!
@mza Yeah, agreed on the towers point. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
@alans-antics Yeah, I think it could maybe use some re-branding in the future. As for difficulty, I think the levels here were definitely on the easier side. I'd toyed with the idea of things like drawbridges and honeytraps to add a level of timing to the game, and I think that (along with a more diverse set of towers and grid-pieces) would really help make the levels harder. Plus, of course, more rigorous level testing than can be done in 72 hours. Also, good note on the putter towers. Thanks for playing!
@mektidas Thanks! And we'll have to wait and see if it pans out ;)
@caleblewis I think we already gave your game a go, actually! @caterein left some feedback. As for the final levels... Yeah. I think it was a mix of me (stupidly) assuming people wouldn't be so quick to grasp the cannon and not having enough time to test the levels as much as I would've liked. Thanks for the feedback!

I really love this game and how much way to finish a level we had for the last ones ! It was really fun to try some shitty idea and sometimes succeed (like finish with only one canon the level) Plus, it was pretty clear and previsible how the game will go, and I luckily experience no bug, wich is pretty rare in a game jam. In general, I really enjoyed playing this game !

This is a pretty good game, good job! I enjoyed this and played through all the levels :-D Speaking about levels, I was really impressed by the number of levels you guys came up with in such limited time, congrats! @strangeryann I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would've loved to have stuck more levels in there, actually, but I'm glad there were enough for you. Cosmetic changes are definitely a constant. Thanks for playing!
Really cool, clever game. Sure it's a combo of golf and tower defense, but it really is also a puzzle game, which I love. It seemed like you guys had a really clear vision of your idea because it all seems well thought out. The music was cheery too haha. Nice job!
Hey, was a bit confused in the beginning, but it's a great mash up of golf and tower-defense games. I personally have never been a fan of either genre much, but I liked how it turned into a strategy game as well, deciding where you needed to place the towers and where you need to launch the ball. Good job :golf:
