LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Sophos by Justintime4u2bu 2017-12-04T04:34:54Z

I should have practiced more with Unity before hand, a lot of time was spent trying to learn the engine and MonoDevelop honestly my LD39 submission is way higher in quality and much more of a game.

Also screw unity's build process, I have to upload a freakin zip because it spits out 3 files. Shoulda used Zero again! But I'm glad I got this experience with Unity.

Sophos by Justintime4u2bu 2017-12-06T07:30:03Z

Thank you for the feedback! yeah I made sure you were still able to move even when carrying large amounts of rocks (but I think there might be a bug with that), I thought about adding jump but wasn't entirely sure how that would really support the main purpose of the game (if I make an update I'll definitely add a jump mechanic though). It's a very bare bones game though, and hopefully my entry to next ludum dare will be much better than even my LD39 game!

Also thanks for understanding that this was more of a learning exercise!

Didgeribug in da place ! by Hippunk 2017-12-06T07:07:03Z

Very good LD game, it does get kind of old after awhile, for instance I kept running to to the left and just spam shooting at the hordes that spawned. I liked that the enemies that hit you accumulated, and there seemed to be a regeneration mechanic (that I don't completely understand), but it was interesting to have a punishment/reward for getting hit. The egyptianesque music/style was a nice touch, and I like that a highscore section was implemented. Near the end of my run it got real laggy (probably due to the amount of enemies spawned). and lastly the ZQSD controls are real weird, so I ended up using arrow keys instead.

Overall: 4/5 stars (also A lot better than my entry so props on that :P)

EA Escape by Visperal Games 2017-12-05T07:25:12Z

Nice, I like It. love that it's 3D, it's hard to pull off in LD There are some bugs here and there (and I couldn't move at one point though that's probably intentional)

Also I'm disappointed that I was not awarded with a sense of pride and accomplishment everything was free and accessible and I just can't comprehend such practices. overall I would rate it 4.5/7 it was pretty good and worth picking up from the bargain bin on your next stop to toys r us.

MATCH3+CONNECT4 by Sean S. LeBlanc 2018-04-29T04:50:58Z

uh oh i broke it :O good game though I didn't have anyone to play with would be cool to see a CPU player update! IBrokET.PNG

Cryptarch by juxipolo 2018-05-01T05:59:50Z

like others have said: great art! the lighting was well done and the gameplay was highly entertaining I want more! I'd love to see updates to it, I'm not done playing yet though so I'll get back to the game! seriously great work!

Edit: I found a bug where the game started horrendously lagging while in the dungeons and i wasn't able to leave. Still Phenomenal entry nonetheless!

KartVania by tifu 2018-04-28T23:53:35Z

so I may have played a 'little' too long I mean yes i did exploit a bug where a health upgrade respawned in the knight cavern to the extent where the health went off the screen. It took a long time, beat all bosses got all the upgrades (unless there were some in the out of bound areas that I didn't find) but damn this game is great, I got up to the speed of ~90 with the help of the drift upgrade, I was disappointed that there weren't any speed upgrades to exploit (because that would be funny to see :D) the keys don't really seem to work. and I think my favorite character was the shopkeeper because he was probably modeled the best out of all of them :P (great work on dracula's model btw). I'm not entirely sure how the witch is supposed to be beaten but I jumped and shot and that seemed to work. all the bosses are well done. my only complaint was that there isn't any sound, but midway through grinding for health I switched on spotify. the lil enemies weren't very tough to fight after getting the upgrade that allows you to damage them by crashing into them. I got stuck in the wolf mans cave and had to restart, but that's about the only real game breaking bug that I found. like an above comment I'm not too sure the recoil was a good idea it only slowed me down.

I'd love to see updates to this, it's already a great game as is and updates would make it a lot better! New enemies would be nice to see! if it wasn't already clear I love the game! Holy shit this is a compo game too?! Great job!

If your up to it, check out my game, it may not be a 3D metroidvania kartracing game but I think it's alright considering. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

Puttsy by morrilet 2018-04-25T23:34:53Z

I think this is the invigoration that all golf games should have :P I like the individual sound effects given to each towers function. It's more like a tower 'offense' game

BINGO FUEL by LancesCaterpie 2018-04-27T22:40:29Z

Holy shit this game is awesome! granted it could use some polish/tweaking and more instruction on the controls and mechanics, but I want more! some very innovative ideas here, its kinda like a 2D justcause/flight sim. a freeplay arcade mode would be neat. check out my game if/when you have the time https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

I played it twice! seriously I want an update for this @lancescaterpie !

Yet Another Game About Zombies And Farming (aka YAGAZAF) by HakunaMacouta 2018-04-29T08:36:27Z

I'd like to see this finished it seems like an interesting concept (or maybe I just have a soft spot for farming games?) a post apocalyptic zombie farming game in 2D would be quite interesting, don't try to pull too much from stardew valley though.

Townsman (City-Builder/Action-Adventure) by Efmi_ 2018-05-01T05:34:51Z

I played the Jam version and then the updated version, the start menu is a bit wordy, there's like a whole paragraph to read to understand the basics I think it could probably be summarized or implemented more effectively, I know first hand how obtuse it can be to design a 2D game in Unity during a jam (*cough* my LD 40 entry sucked) anyways, if your looking to update the game I'd like suggest a few things:

-the town hall and the houses should probably use different sprites, it could be confusing when scaling Townsman up to find a townhall in a sea of small townhall lookalikes

-the zombies could use a visualization for ranged attacks like throwing a weapon (or spitting blood a la 28 days later)

-more ammo when purchasing from the town hall or have ammo scale up as the townhall is upgraded

though I don't want to seem like I'm commandeering your creativity, It's a good Ludum dare compo game! and it's up to you to decide whats best for Townsman! I'd love to see more updates to this!

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-23T02:03:05Z

Better than my last one for sure, but I should really tweak a few things and test the released version. I'll upload a version with music and updated stuff on the Itch page tomorrow, tonight I rest.

wasted too much time on some mechanics (trying to implement them "the proper way" but alas it's a ludum dare game)

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-24T07:40:33Z

@fashionbatman the bullets going to the cursor was intentional, I thought it would add more depth to the shooting (instead of shooting straight), you can also swing the bullets around you if you move the cursor fast enough, though the bullets could probably use some graphical updates.

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-24T07:42:04Z

thanks all for the Encouragement! @OscarTrevejo I'll check out your game as soon as I'm able to!

Edit: turns out it was spam :(

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-25T18:33:27Z

yeah, I agree the difficulty ramps to high to fast, When I was testing it during the jam the spawn rate would go so high that it spawned an enemy every frame, resulting in low framerate and a giant mass of enemies. and after it ramps up the gameplay gets kinda samey. I'll lower enemy bullet speeds in the next update tonight. I've been thinking of adding a bit of a safety net like an active powerup, I'm not too sure how to go about adding it though.

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-28T01:27:17Z

glad to hear @mrwillowb! :)

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-28T20:56:39Z

@EddyNeave yeah sorry the control description in the compo version is quite misleading, you have to hold left mouse button to shoot (shooting ships down gives you a score, after all it is a shootemup) I tried to put it up as much as possible in the itch and LD descriptions that you have to hold down LMB but i guess that's not enough. Unfortunately it is a LD compo game so I'm hesitant to update the compo version on itch at all.

I changed the LD description snapshot to a snapshot from the updated version, so hopefully that will quell a bit of future confusion.

thanks for playing though!

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-28T21:34:44Z

@EddyNeave Will do! thanks for the input!

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-04-30T02:17:19Z

@DeepTerror Glad you liked it!

@tifu yeah I've been trying to decide what the best way to do it would be, right now its kinda like those aggravating stealth missions in AAA games where if you get seen you insta-fail.

Thanks for playing! :D

Photonic by Justintime4u2bu 2018-05-07T15:13:01Z

@CG_Fred thanks for playing the genres I mashed together were stealth/shootemup, yeah, it does become quite repetitive, I'm hoping to eventually fix that with updates though!

Beet Running by BlackAtlas 2018-04-25T23:11:19Z

bears. beets. battlestar galactica. the 3D models are very nice looking and how they moved added the life this game needs. I can tell how much effort you put into the synchronized audio, it's too bad it didn't work out though. if you get a chance to play/rate my game I'd be greatly appreciative, its currently at only ~7 votes :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

Axe and Roses by Hippunk 2018-04-25T04:44:52Z

After Ratchet asked me how often I get to the cloud district I knew our relationship couldn't last, so I flipped through Tandaaarg looking for the perfect companion, and by chance I came across Darock the unmovable. Now usually when a Tendaaarg profile has a picture of someone with supple curves and a voluptuous physique they are quite disappointing to meet. But not Darock the unmovable, no, his body was as stiff and round as an anvil, his abs were rock hard oh, and the branch protruding from his stony flesh made it clear just how interested he was. I made him glow so bright the gods could have seen him a thousand grognak foots away. And then I bent forward and my lips made contact with the oozing paint that comprised Darock's succulent lips. Oh how warm and moist they were, I could suck the bitter paint right off of the curvature of his mouth. How could it have been so wrong... if it felt oh so right. Me and Darock have a passion for one another that no couple could match. The effervescent oder wafting from his toppled tankard only made me want him more. The warm glow of the tavern delighted my senses and made Darock's body even warmer to the touch. His eyes stared at me longingly, provoking desires in me I'd never thought possible. If only our time together could have lasted longer...

Don't look at Greg by hankworx 2018-04-27T07:49:18Z

I heard it was a competition so I didn't bother talking to anyone, busy pickin apples the whole time, then I found the path to the orchard and the small valley of gregs, and picked some more apples avoiding the gregs and triumphantly picking to victory all without a single interaction... ok I may be a competitive introvert, but apples!

Happy Quiz by SophieM 2018-04-27T08:12:40Z

this quiz was too easy. it honestly could use more ponies. and flowers. but other than the lack of ponies and flowers i think this was a rather enjoyable experience. ponies and flowers and ponies and flowers and ponies and flowers and ponies and flowers and fun, so much fun. all the fun. the funnest of all the funs! isn't that right mr. snoogle buns?! i think you need more tea! I rate this a 5 out of flowers.

Acid by vojtiman 2018-04-29T18:06:09Z

great game... well I spent a lot of time clicking and getting more coins. and soooo.... I have to admit, I cheated a little. I downloaded an auto clicker got ALL the monies and destroyed everything. But to be fair I clicked a bunch manually my fingers hurt and after staring at that green money generation screen my hands started to look, i kid you not,hot pink. so yeah I downloaded an auto clicker went to bed and woke up with about 5 million silvers... but you see that wasn't enough I wanted more. I generated more and more money, even managed to overflow the integer value once or twice. I generated money for so so long that eventually I was able to get 10,000 silver a second. and then I went to the old man and bought at least a thousand in each stat. I took cheating to the extreme... maybe I focused too heavily on the clicker part of the game.

Before I uh... cheated I played the game legitimately The enemies are quite tough if you rely too much on leveling but It was definitely balanced well, and the art and music and character design its all phenomenal especially for a ludum dare game. I didn't experience any real bugs in my playthroughs either except for the wasps. but pleease please don't make an update, my sanity would wilt away after so long of money generation.

though if you do update it make gold coins and gold coin generation with iron companies or something, and weapon systems! I could see this being a worthy adversary to "tales of maj eyal" but don't tell me about future updates. I have generated too much money to return.

Acid by vojtiman 2018-04-30T02:33:37Z

@vojtiman I was exaggerating the time scale a bit, It was around 10 to 15 hours but still that's a lot of gameplay for a ludum dare game! I'd love to see future updates to this (despite what I said). You got a great game on your hands, and its quite addicting generating more and more money. the art is seriously really well done. also on the second portal level I was able to cheese the skeletons a bit by getting them stuck on corners, would be cool to see path finding vary from enemy to enemy instead of running in a straight line, or maybe more variety of ranged enemy attacks.

Edit: Ok so it turns out I had the game open still and there's a bit of a bug (i think), the stats menu hasn't gone away since i first hit the old man. and here's my stats: clikkkker.PNG

what can I say I'm a very lucky person. :P

Cyclevania by Allen Oliver 2018-04-29T17:41:22Z

the player animation is great, the gameplay is interesting and the art style compliments it well, no complaints except what others have said about the controls. good job!

Fishy by ProWolf 2018-04-27T07:29:09Z

cast cast cast cast ctrl + v has never been spammed like that before, i like this, its a little tedious (and hurts my hands) but it stuck to the theme and was an overall interesting concept. and if your not too busy casting would you kindly check out my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

Farmer 21 by Jon_Nova 2018-04-25T07:14:36Z

yeah like others have said here it is quite short, art style is cute though :)

Crescendo by VivianMochi 2018-04-25T07:34:47Z

This Is really good, It's tough though, but it's awesome, I'm going to have to try to progress more later I've only gotten to level 2 so far.

and here's the obligatory self promotion check out my entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

Short, but sweet! the 3D models, audio, and overall graphics are phenomenal, especially for a Ludum Dare game!
