Funny game, good job. I wish player would move faster, though

shimapleleaf 2018-04-23 15:28

Nice concept! Execution might be little on the boring side, though. Mostly because of the very slow speed you have at the beginning of the game and the large amount of open spaces. The lack of audio is also a factor. Other than that, lot's of fun!

2018-04-23 22:59

The jump is the most lacking part of the game for me. With the final enemies floating above the air, the jump needs to be more responsive. Other than that this was actually a very enjoyable game. Also, the instructions don't match the actual controls, but I figured it out :)

lemons 2018-04-24 00:13

Decent effort! I do wish you moved a bit faster in the beginning though.

tifu 2018-04-24 00:14

Yeah, probably I should have started you faster and made one or two of the speed upgrades increase acceleration rather than max speed.

The controls should show Xbox controls, I totally just forgot to go back and add in keyboard controls to the instructions ^^ (default is left shift/control/alt rather than A/X/B buttons)

I definitely enjoyed this, although it was a little unclear whether I was actually dealing damage to the bosses, particularly Dracula. Does he only get hurt if you boost into him, or does he just have a lot of health?

tifu 2018-04-24 10:19

@lpriebe - Feedback on damage is definitely a thing that this needs, just ran out of time to add sound effects and particle effects etc.

To kill Dracula: You have to use all the abilities together to hurt him, so you have to jump and shoot him, he'll fall to the ground, you then have to use a combination of drift boost and ramming speed to actually cause damage. So stun him, then drift next to him and blast into him when he's stunned. Should only take five or so boosts to end him. Technically you don't need the lava-proof wheels upgrade, but the arena would be a lot harder with less space to run around.

I liked your game. I like the graphics actually, it has something haha.Maybe put a visual feeedback when you actually damage the boss ? great effort.

Nice game, wow there is a lot of content there, I love the idea. I beat the knight without racing him hehe ;). I found it really hard to find the upgrades. Nice work.

robowarrior1982 2018-04-24 18:24

Excellent idea ! with a little more speed, drift, and visual effect it would be really cool!

sndr 2018-04-24 20:33

Sweet entry! :) I like the fact that you start without any of the abilities and you need to explore to acquire them. That is a cool concept! I do think as it was mentioned on the comments above that it the areas are maybe too big and empty sometimes. A bit more action, or smaller areas could have worked better. But hey, great entry nevertheless!

silkworm-sweatshop 2018-04-25 02:02

Took a while to figure out Dracula but thankfully giant orb shopkeeper gave me a hint. Definitely a weird mix of genres haha. As people have stated the low speed is a problem. I know part of metroidvanias are the upgrades but I'd rather go from "fast" to "really fast" rather then "slow" to "acceptable". Not a huge fan of the recoil from shooting either. Still there is a charm to it, and it felt nostalgic to me as it took me back to the days of mario kart 64 and Diddy kong racing.

oddballdave 2018-04-25 14:18

Interesting idea. The Kart was to slow for my liking though. Good stuff :8ball:

so I may have played a 'little' too long I mean yes i did exploit a bug where a health upgrade respawned in the knight cavern to the extent where the health went off the screen. It took a long time, beat all bosses got all the upgrades (unless there were some in the out of bound areas that I didn't find) but damn this game is great, I got up to the speed of ~90 with the help of the drift upgrade, I was disappointed that there weren't any speed upgrades to exploit (because that would be funny to see :D) the keys don't really seem to work. and I think my favorite character was the shopkeeper because he was probably modeled the best out of all of them :P (great work on dracula's model btw). I'm not entirely sure how the witch is supposed to be beaten but I jumped and shot and that seemed to work. all the bosses are well done. my only complaint was that there isn't any sound, but midway through grinding for health I switched on spotify. the lil enemies weren't very tough to fight after getting the upgrade that allows you to damage them by crashing into them. I got stuck in the wolf mans cave and had to restart, but that's about the only real game breaking bug that I found. like an above comment I'm not too sure the recoil was a good idea it only slowed me down.

I'd love to see updates to this, it's already a great game as is and updates would make it a lot better! New enemies would be nice to see! if it wasn't already clear I love the game! Holy shit this is a compo game too?! Great job!

If your up to it, check out my game, it may not be a 3D metroidvania kartracing game but I think it's alright considering. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/photonic

linky439 2018-04-29 15:34

Nice idea! Like others, I think the kart is overall too slow, but I liked the mix of genres (maybe with a map next time ? ^^)

It did remind me of Diddy Kong Racing too. I think some audio would also be cool, but overall, I think you've made a rather strong entry. Congrats!

erkberg 2018-04-29 19:59

Pretty interesting mix of genres and it actually works quite well! I didn't mind the low speed at the beginning too much, because it soon built up. What bothered me more was the slow acceleration and deceleration / driving backwards, if you turned up that value I think the game could be a lot more fun. Speaking of which, it was really fun to unlock the different upgrades and the bosses are a welcome change of pace. Unfortunately I was not able to beat the witch boss (tried three times) and gave up on it, but the rest of the game was really fun. Somehow the absence of audio was more noticeable in this game than in others, maybe because you just expect to hear some kind of motor sound. Anyway, it is a really neat game as it is and I think if you improve and polish it a little more it could become something very special. Good job overall!

zinkler 2018-05-04 09:30

Great game, totally enjoyed it! I desperately needed an option to rotate the camera with the right stick, it would help a lot during wolf/dracula fights, some audio would be great, and, of course, you start off too slow. Other than that, a great idea, a worthy implementation, and I'm sincerely baffled by the fact you've been able to accomplish that much in mere 48 hours. Great job!

ava-skoog 2018-05-12 08:30

Loved it! Despite the lack of audio and a "proper" ending it had a lot of content and it was great fun figuring everything out.

Seems the slow start speed has been thoroughly covered in previous comments already, but at least it made the eventual speed upgrades feel very good.

Too bad about the lack of sound since it would've helped a lot in the boss fights, but it worked out anyway. c:

Was really nice to be able to play with a controller, tho my finger started hurting a bit after having to press the trigger down for so long, so maybe a different button would've been better since you didn't seem to be using the analogue feature of the trigger anyway. Just pressing the stick forward did work at times tho but sometimes the car would randomly just stop, so the safest bet was to keep using the trigger anyway.

I guess I'm not totally on board with the 'racer' aspect of it, since besides the actual race against one of the minibosses, it's more that the character happens to be sitting in a vehicle, and throughout most of the game the player isn't really racing per se. But it was great fun either way!

I hope you take the time to explore this concept more and flesh it out into a full game. Its very interesting and fun, and I really think there is something here
