LD24 — Evolution

Soul Jar by farmergnome 2012-08-29T00:31:00

Simply love the visual style, it all fits together pretty nicely. Also can't see anything wrong with the controls, except the climbing behavior is a bit strange at times.

The only downside for me is that after some time it feels kind of repetitive (or I totally missed the point at using that spaceship). I just kept running, finding food, enemies and edges to climb :). Also found these red things and some hats I couldn't really use. Hope that doesn't sound too negative. For 48 hours there is a whole lot of nifty details in there.

Soul Jar by farmergnome 2012-09-01T14:06:00

Well, I was motivated enough to just come back and give it another try. Of course with the knowledge from the comments I was finally able to finish the game, but I noticed 2 things that could be helpful to comment here.

1) I believe the most noticeable issue with the controls is not really the climbing behavior (which just takes a bit to notice that its hard to climb while a sandstorm hits you). But it is kind of unexpected that you lose nearly all your running speed when jumping. That makes reaching some cliffs hard in a "frustrating" way.

2) Maximizing the window makes observing the game mechanics so much more feasible. It's surprising how much accessibility of all the small details you can observe increases when the small symbols and movements are actually visible :).

Natural Selection: Travel Agency by lightspeedlucas 2012-08-27T21:27:00

Well first played, then read the inscriptions here and then played again.

Couldn't find a way to prevent extinction through game mechanics. Apparently eating, going to islands and avoiding predators is not enough, or I wasn't good enough at that :). But managed to survive at least 8000 years, guess that's ok.
The relaxed background music somehow fits the game. Feels like vacation..

God Called in Sick Today by tripleVisionGames 2012-09-17T09:12:00

Really nice and relaxing gameplay. It's motivating to experiment on how to achieve the different effects. Some challenge in achieving even the basic things could add some additional potential.

Obsolete Upgrade by RARoadkill 2012-08-29T14:43:00

Will have some serious nightmares involving toasters :). Kind of creepy when there are 3 toasters on top of you.

EVILUTION by GothFraex 2012-08-27T20:55:00

Luckily read the comments after doing the same mistakes a few times (finding the turn keys from the readme and trying to take the wrong exit).

Really like the "oldschool" rendering and movement style. Could imagine that some matching background track and hit/hurt samples would improve the atmosphere even further.

For my taste the window is a bit to small but had some kind of "evolution" after finding out how to dodge enemies in front of you within narrow areas.

Lost Soul by Lowlet 2012-08-28T20:47:00

Same issue here with the background image. I like the background and animation style within that. But it can be really frustrating to hit those small things with their super snappy spontaneous movement :).

Cuboid Sandbox by cominu 2012-08-28T19:46:00

Neat. Really like the overall game mechanics and visualization. Some goal/challenge, and probably a bit less sandbox, could really provide some additional motivation (having some kind of RTS in mind :D). However the camera movement is a bit sluggish here.

Flrrr by spx 2012-08-27T13:25:00

-Linux versions-
If the game crashes at the loading screen, there is a more recent version with some fixes available at http://dev.spectratic.de/Flrrr/

Flrrr by spx 2012-08-29T14:53:00

uh sorry for the keys. Only thought of the common y/z and special character mismatches :/. Must have been quite painful to play that way. Will learn from that and at least check the arrow keys in addition, or store the configuration in some text file if there is no time for a working menu.

Flrrr by spx 2012-08-31T22:38:00

Regarding the (apparently) imminent release of SDL2, I wasn't really motivated to look up all the API differences as I directly jumped into SDL2 for cross-platform OpenGL support.
Thanks for the report. I've looked into the issue quite extensively. Static linking is usually no feasible alternative as this brings a whole new universe of licensing issues with it. Also it seems that just shipping those files can bring several other compatibility issues with dlopen within SDL and the rest of the system. I uploaded a rebuilt binary and was able to go down to 2.13. 2.11 was available but would've implicated gcc-4.4 and I need proper c++11 support.. that could have been a problem. Here I have 2.16 (with gcc 4.7) so it seems that compatibility hasn't changed in the last releases. Please give it a try if you want.

Morph, Virus, Morph! by metacozm 2012-08-30T21:39:00

Neat graphics. You should probably concentrate on the camera interaction, it's quite hard to see or react to those things that shoot at you. But made it to the exit :)

Octo-Darwin Vs Bat-Monkey by AaronGordon 2012-09-17T03:10:00

Had fun even despite some regular "Java-lags" (at least within Chrome). The game may be a bit too unforgiving when it comes to missing only very few targets in combination with the small viewport.

Beetlefield : The Forecast by Benjamin 2012-08-29T23:43:00

That is some really clever interpretation of the theme! In my opinion the fights feel a bit too random due to the movement and shooting behavior; and could also be a bit faster, but that may be in some degree subjective. However the game mechanics is very impressive for 48h.

Biotic by aeonofdiscord 2012-08-30T21:54:00

I like the way of interaction but some kind of goal or challenge would've been.. motivating :) And seems that the game gets more sluggish with time.

EVO-001 by kyyrma 2012-08-29T23:18:00

I like the graphics and style of the game. Unfortunately apparently I wasn't even good enough the reach the first boss (from the screenshot). Being "one-hit-killed" all the time is pretty hard.

LD25 — You are the Villain

Grey Goo Turbo Challenge by Bemmu 2012-12-25T15:14:00

Nice graphics style but movements and clipping is a bit too sketchy.

The Adventures of Tim Burr by Josh Riley 2012-12-28T16:03:00

Interesting and solid gameplay. Simple but consistent graphics and audio. The hippie direction changes can be a bit too surprising at times.

Cookie Caper by commanderstitch 2012-12-25T14:43:00

Interesting interpretation of the theme and nice game atmosphere.

Interfection by spx 2012-12-25T14:46:00

yep, intentionally no way to remove dots. Mistakes can only be fixed by placing dots with different numbers (1-0) to push or pull "people". However it's quite difficult to distinguish between the different frequencies by looking at the pulsating waves.

Destroy All Heroes by Vennril 2012-12-27T00:09:00

Really great graphics besides the missing audio. +1 for Oreganiks suggestion that heroes could actually try to steal the gold :). But the game has some real individual charm.

City Rat by Nate Kling 2012-12-25T15:07:00

Really nice and "thrilling" gameplay. More influence on the behavior of the AI could be interesting.

The Plague by Joozey 2012-12-26T23:58:00

Couple of nice and lovely details in here. Some more active opponents and goals would be interesting.

Enemy of the State by Arcantic 2012-12-27T20:02:00

Really nice retro feeling.

The Tim Thomery Extravaganza!!! by ElliotCollis 2012-12-28T10:41:00

Very stylish and kind of solid game. But some unfair passages and missing sound is a pity.

Cube Infection by noKid 2012-12-26T13:38:00

Nice idea and game rules. Like the graphics, but overall a bit too slow-paced for my taste.

Colorful by suve 2012-12-25T14:23:00

Connection to the theme seems a bit shallow to me, but I like the introduction story and retro graphics. The difference between moving and shooting directions can make combat a bit annoying at times.

Under a bloody sky by NuSan 2012-12-27T20:08:00

Besides the missing parts: The graphical representation is awesome for 48h.

Event Horizon by SelectricSimian 2012-12-29T14:00:00

Had few disturbing game stutters but the gameplay is very interesting and tactical.

Double Tap by Sam Driver 2012-12-28T16:17:00

Bit "slow" but very interesting visual and atmospheric experience.

Escape From Prison Planet by gameXcore 2012-12-25T14:34:00

The bright graphics lessen the space feeling and for my taste a bit too easy, but the overall game experience is really good. Nice work.

A Wheelie Good Time by df458 2012-12-28T23:40:00

Had few issues with responsiveness of controls. Really like the humorous game idea and accessible but somehow challenging gameplay.

Holly Jolly Pyromaniac by UndergroundPixel 2012-12-25T14:57:00

Great graphics and sound but seems that there are a few performance issues here.

LD27 — 10 Seconds

Evec by spx 2013-08-26T07:25:00

From a game jam perspective I have to apologize for this entry in many ways :). Also tried out Awesomium for the first time which alone adds about 20-30 MB (unpacked) to the game.
At the moment I don't know how the executable behaves when no LeapMotion software is installed (would've assumed that it opens at least), as soon as I find out I will add some comment about that.

Regarding the controls. I didn't manage to think of a good way to provide a fast enough z-axis in time. The effect and intensity of the cursor is controlled using the z position and for some passages this needs to be controlled very quickly :).

Evec by spx 2013-08-26T12:20:00

Seems that without a Leap Controller, the actual game not starting correctly is the expected behavior. Probably some unchecked call I do when initializing.

Evec by spx 2013-08-29T20:19:00

Here we go: http://youtu.be/_np0uSW_H3w

(Had to get used to Lightworks and accidentally deleted parts of the project multiple times.. also there is still some stutter which is not in the source material but quality is acceptable)

LD28 — You Only Get One

Shine by AdventureIslands 2013-12-18T00:24:00

Neat, very "finished" feeling. Also the last level has just the right amount of difficulty.

But You Want One More by spx 2013-12-18T23:23:00

Sorry for anyone who is unable to start the game, this is most likely due to the OpenGL 3.3 requirement, I kind of got used to the clear versioning and behavior of the newer specifications.
The message from the debug.log is normal and printed by CEF3, I believe OpenGL 2.1 is the highest I have seen in a VM, but I could be wrong. I guess a crash is the "expected behavior" when the context creation fails.

Two things I will try within the next couple of days: Lower OpenGL requirements + Linux build.

But You Want One More by spx 2013-12-19T00:16:00

I've added an experimental OpenGL 2.1 build. It still uses the 3.3 header because I just can't bother with all the "non-2.1-core" stuff. But it creates a 2.1 context and the shaders are changed according to the 2.1 specification. So it's a hit or miss.. please don't make me do that again :)

Still trying to get a Linux build tomorrow.

But You Want One More by spx 2013-12-29T00:04:00

@lennaert please extract the complete archive.
@TheStolenBattenberg the game needs the "Visual C++ Redistributable 2012" (x86), most systems already have this because of some other application or game.

But You Want One More by spx 2014-01-03T21:43:00

yes music is generated using atrk, awesome tool when time is limited. effect sounds are generated by bfxr.

Bomb has been defused by SkyWolf 2014-01-01T01:08:00

Really impressive for 5 hours and motivating enough to give it several tries until you finally manage to win :)

One Gunman by Levi D. Smith 2013-12-19T02:12:00

yeah aiming is a bit hard to predict but you can get used to it. Would be nice if you could change the aiming in order to hit targets that are nearly besides you.

KERNEL by CatOnMars 2013-12-17T23:45:00

Awesome visuals and some interesting concepts but those hitboxes are unforgiving.

1 by eralpkaraduman 2013-12-19T02:31:00

I wonder if there is something hidden within these beach balls.

You Are The One by mystakin 2013-12-19T02:47:00

The game is unforgiving when trying to jump off directly at the end of a platform but overall the parts fit together really well. Interesting visuals+audio.

Isles of Solara by ashen 2013-12-17T23:12:00

Just to add something I haven't seen in the comments before: Many pirates I encountered were half dead ;)
Well done, played all my way to the 100.

Lumen by Nelien 2013-12-29T00:38:00

I really like the visuals and feeling of exploration (incl. movement+sound). Maybe the spikes could be a bit easier to distinguish from the environment.

BL1ND by Shaun LeBron 2013-12-31T01:14:00

The idea and implementation is really impressive. Great work!

DISTANT WORLD FOR THE BOTH OF US by Cell 2013-12-18T00:11:00

I'm getting a "... has stopped working" crash at random points which is kind of sad because it's a great experience up to that point. (Win 8.1 @ earlier comment)

Careful Now by Orangy Tang 2013-12-17T23:36:00

oh no, i spilled all the.. wait what was that again :). Very fun way of interacting, but a bit difficult. I can already imagine this with gesture input..

Tiny Thor by JoeManaco 2013-12-17T23:27:00

Really great first impression! Would be cool if you could retrieve the hammer directly, i'm sure mighty thor can do that :)

Call of Monsters by 2A1S 2013-12-19T02:23:00

I really like the billiard-like game mechanics.

TITAN SOULS by Claw 2013-12-17T23:58:00

Gameplay could be a bit faster for my taste but I like it nevertheless.
