Nice game.
There's nothing special about this game, but it has good gameplay.
I very appreciate gamepad support :)
Sadly it you didn't have enough time to fit it in theme
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD24 → EVO-001

Nice game.

I liked this game; in particular I found the story behind it to be entertaining! The gameplay was pretty enjoyable, though I feel the controls were a little bit clunky and slow. Still, well done. :)
This was a pretty cool game :D Nice job.
Maybe im just bad at these kind of games but i didnt get very far. And I tried 7 times. I liked the graphic style and music. It fit togehter nicely.
Thanks for the comments. I'll be sure to comment all of your games as well :)
@Maacus: I was the only person to test the game during developement, so the difficulty might well be too high. I preferred to use the gamepad, so the difficulty is best adjusted for it.
While it wasn't really innovative, the music and graphics make it up and it became a very polished sidescroller shooter.
OH NO, I was going to play your game now but it's Windows only, and I'm on Linux :(. I'll try to play it tomorrow at work. But it seems pretty nice from the screenshots :).
HEY, looking at a screenshot from one of your posts... A MEGA MAN / ROCKMAN REFERENCE!! It MUST be a good game :)
@Kurama_Youko: Yeah, it's in the games intro :) I really tried to go for that NES feel, both in graphics and gameplay. Hopefully you get to play it!
Nice and clean!
I really like it and I can't ever seem to get the green things!
@josefnpat: Thanks... and you are not alone! There is actually a mean little oversight in their creation code that causes the powerups to pick a random direction when created. Sometimes this can make them almost impossible to pick up as you can't actually move backwards :D
If I decide to further work on this game, I'll make it so that they are catapulted forward so that the player has a more fair chance of catching them.
Nice work!
The weapon mechanic is good, enemies tracking the player is fun, sadly I don't see much of the theme, but it's a solid game :)
It reminds me Gynoug, I don't know why. Maybe because the graphics are nice and because Gynoug is the only shoot'em up I really played. I'm not much into shoot em up so I didn't go far. Was the theme justified somewhere ?
@Pierrec, 5n4l3: Thanks for the feedback.
The theme is mentioned in the opening scroll, but I feel it's a really cheap way of trying to justify it. If you read the notes on top if this page, you'll see that the game was meant to have basic evolving AI, but I had to cut those mechanics out towards the end of development.
For me this year was about finishing an entry. This is actually the first game I've ever shared publicly!
I love space shooters! :D
While it may not be very innovative or related to the theme, it's definitely a lot of fun. Quite difficult though, never got past zone 2.
Small suggestion: If you have gamepad support, it should be possible to restart the game and navigate through the menu using the gamepad too, so you don't have to switch all the time.
@Huchikut: Nice to hear someone shares my passion for space shooters!
The issue with gamepad support in the title / continue screen is the way GM8.1 handles joystick input, as there is no built-in variable for checking if the analog stick is brought to its max / min Y position. I couldn't get the cursor to move reliably, so I completely removed the ability to use controllers in the title screen.
Thinking back, writing a custom script to check if the analog stick has reached a certain threshold on its Y axis would've been easy, but it was just one of those things that got left out because of the limited time.
I like this game. Gameplay with gamepad is more enjoyable than keyboard. Really. :)
I liked this, simple and easy to pick up and play. Good challenge too !
Very cool game. Classic but fun, and with gamepad suport !
Finally I could play your game. Kudos, you managed to put in the NES feeling successfully, be it in graphics, sound, fun or difficulty! I'm sorry you couldn't implement enemy evolution in time, it could have been even funnier!
Nice game. Don't say the game doesn't fit the theme.
"You collect DNA icons to evolute the weapons"
Now it fits the theme :D
Good game, classic gameplay. I got to the boss but couldn't beat it. The music, sound, and graphics all worked well together.
reminds me of Prototype for Dos
I like the graphics and style of the game. Unfortunately apparently I wasn't even good enough the reach the first boss (from the screenshot). Being "one-hit-killed" all the time is pretty hard.
This is a great game. Simple and polished. I had fun using the missiles, but found the laser frustrating since it was so weak and there is little x real estate to accrue hits on the targets.
Nice. Initial idea was awesome.
The game need maybe more dynamism. The spaceship should be more fast and the differents weapons shouldn't be available at start but won by playing because i play jsut with missile because it's more easy.
Thanks for all the comments guys!
@cacciatc: The laser is initially weak, but upgraded to level 2 it is actually the fastest way to kill both the bosses in the game.
@repstyle: I tried to balance out the weapons so that they all have different uses. The blaster is good against fast and weak enemies, the laser works on large and slower ones and missiles are good for immobile enemies like the turrets.
I couldn't add all the enemy variety I would've wanted in the LD time window though, so I agree about the missiles (especially when upgraded) feeling a bit too useful when compared to the other weapons.
It is was it is -- a space side-scroller. Nice Retro feel to it.
nice side-scroll shooter. liked the sound and explosion animations.
if i would not like it hard, i would criticize the same as you said for my game: one-hit game-over makes it hard... :-)
Fun fact: Use both keys Z and X to double rate of fire! Pretty cool game!
That was fun!
