LD50 — Delay the inevitable

I Wanted A new Tower Defense Game by Lerc 2022-04-07T17:35:56Z

Nice, the graphics were great, I loved the Tron vibe.

* I didn't realise there 1X symbol was a button, I assumed it was some kind of combo meter and that I was missing something. it wasn't until I read the comments here that I realised my mistake.

* The money you gain for each kill seemed kinda low. it forced me to play on the high speeds to avoid sitting and waiting, but then the mobs flashed by very quickly. Even then I never got to afford the most expensive item.

* Audio would have been good.

This is just opinion; but I'd remove the time multiplier and balance money, cost and the rate at which waves spawn so that changing the speed isn't required.

All in all a solid entry.

Belecint by unpronounceable 2022-04-07T17:05:56Z

Very cool concept, a really novel idea. Got to 108.

* Given the theme, this isn't a critique for the jam. But sometimes all the wedges would sync up and converge at once and I simply couldn't click them all in time. Spreading that out would go a long way to help the game feel.

* Having each wedge enter the circle on a beat could be a cool way to make the "music" less discordant.

Great entry though. I feel like this has potential to be a really solid rythym game if you continue with it.

Shotgun King: the Final Checkmate by benjamin 2022-04-06T19:59:58Z

That was really good, I've no idea how you made something that polished in 3 days. It was a really cool concept as well, super unique. Great work to the team!

Scrabble... but for Goblins by weeping-rupee 2022-04-04T23:30:04Z

Hey man, I tried to play but all I got was a black window.

DeckHex by Iluvatar 2022-04-05T02:22:36Z

Really nice, the voice acting takes it to another level. Great work.

Stalling The Dictator by 0x01F0 2022-04-06T19:37:10Z

Nicely done, definitely a unique idea. The animations on the dictator were great, really sold the tone.

Earworm Jam by ursagames 2022-04-16T15:01:31Z

I liked the graphics and the music was funny, you did well with the humor. I'm really not sure about deliberately misleading the player on how to play the game, it didn't lead me to an AHA moment as you mentioned in your blog post, it just annoyed me.

From a technical standpoint, it was a well put together entry. It's nice to see options and a tutorial in a game jam game.

Delay the dancing fire by squirrelsoft 2022-04-14T19:12:01Z

This was a cool idea. The WebGL build was very laggy for me though, to the point that the game wasn't really playable. A downloadable release would have been nice.

Duck It! by Squidly 2022-04-07T16:33:44Z

Very nicely done, the graphics and audio were all on point. I loved how all the ducks scattered around had something to say, that was a nice touch.

My only critique would be using Z as the jump/dash button instead of space felt a little awkward, but that may just be because I don't play many platformers.

The Last Patrol by WilloXs 2022-04-07T14:45:32Z

Very nice entry, I liked that you flew a small squadron rather than just a single ship, that was a cool idea. The background changing hue as you flew around was a neat touch.

* I had the same issue as David York, albeit not quite as extreme.

* It would have been nice to have some feedback on ship damage, it could be hard to tell if I'd actually hit the enemy at times. Some kind of sprite effect, hit markers, damage counter etc... just something to show I'd connected.

* Mouse movement would be great also, the WASD controls felt a little clunky.

* Could the enemy damage the planet? I had assumed so, but it wasn't obvious and they didn't seem to do anything to it.

Cool game :) Great work!

The Last Days of RIPLEY 9000 by Human Writes Code 2022-04-06T15:26:51Z

Very nice, solid work, I didn't encounter any issues. The Power Loader model was nicely animated, especially when it falls apart.

From a balance standpoint I may have made it easier to stockpile resources at the beginning, give the player some hope. Then later as they have to venture further from the base to gather resources they realise the inevitable ;p

The Eclipse by CandleBird 2022-04-06T23:26:41Z

This was cool. the graphics were nicely done, especially the animation on the player arms when you build something. it took me a while to realise there was a war going on outside, but neither side took any damage before I noticed.

If anything it was a little easy, I got to a point where I could just watch the 2 sides fight and occasionally flip a switch if one side started to get the upper hand.

I liked the setting you went for, building for both sides is an interesting twist on the strategy/management game formula.

Astral Abyss by Alexascher 2022-04-07T19:43:09Z

You have nailed the mood category. A really beautiful game. The visuals, sound and art direction came together so perfectly. I love the detail in the artwork and the abstract star designs you have created.

I'm sure I was making mistakes in the gameplay, but everything was so calming that I didn't mind that I was a little lost. It's a shame that the theme infers an ending, because this game would be great to just chill out to and create ever more complex star systems.

Excellent entry, my favourite so far.

They Are Coming by PeaNud 2022-04-06T16:48:43Z

Probably the best one I've played yet. The movement was satisfying, especially the dash. The graphics were good and I loved the aesthetic you went for, it had a really cool vibe.

Paranomaly by TheGamerASD 2022-04-07T21:55:34Z

I'll be honest, I wondered for a while if I was being trolled, couldn't find anything. After a few attempts and once I'd learnt the map a bit I started to notice the anomalies.

Perhaps you could add some really obvious anomalies in amongst the more subtle ones just to keep players from getting too frustrated.

A cool concept though, nice work.

Timeflight Alpha by Quinn_Patrick 2022-04-05T15:57:47Z

Very cool, simple concept, well executed. Gamepad support would be great for this.

I think I ran into the bug you mentioned in your changelog, I thought I'd grabbed the doodad but still got game over.

Timeflight Alpha by Quinn_Patrick 2022-04-05T16:36:00Z

@quinn-patrick Yeah. It only did it once, so I may have just made a mistake.

Immune System "Engineer" - Can you Delay the Inevitable Skin Breach? by Aarimous 2022-04-09T22:16:01Z

Nice, The tutorial screen that the player was forced to click through was a really good UX decision. As was having the music toggle and volume slider at the top.

I liked how the clickable icons were differentiated by shape as well as colour. You've clearly thought about the user experience and accessibility with this entry.

Great work.

Crushed by Holtzzy223 2022-04-17T23:20:04Z

Very nice; the graphics are well done, you picked a simple project and implemented it well.

* The outlines of your sprites are different widths, having a consistent line width would have tied the graphics together a little more cohesively. * The gameplay does one thing well. But it might be too simple, powerups or a wider range of people would help the replayability.

Altogether, a great entry.

Colony Defender by Henrik Ganard 2022-04-05T00:13:24Z

Very cool, the gameplay was simple but worked well.

* I'm not quite sure what triggered the end card? I still had colonists left and my base wasn't destroyed(I don't think). Is there a timer? if so it would help to see that. * There is overlapping text on the "How To Play" screen.

Nice work :)

Atlantis by lisyarus 2022-04-05T20:57:34Z

Really nicely done game. I liked the gameplay concept. The design was nice, the aesthetics and sounds worked together well. The sound of water pouring into a cup got a chuckle out of me.

The balance needs tweaking. Early game it's easy to lose from lack of resources, then by the end you have thousands of everything and can't ever lose. But it's a jam game so balance issues are understandable.

CATch time by Re-Mar 2022-04-06T16:58:44Z

The artwork was great, very unique. Some audio would have been nice, a washing machine running in the background would have really added to the vibe :) Nice work!

Debt Train (card construction game) by Christian Zommerfelds 2022-04-09T01:14:22Z

Very nice, the gameplay was intuitive, It didn't take long to figure out how to play.

My main critique would be that many of the sound effects had quite harsh popping noises when they started or finished. It was quite noticeable on my headphones, and a little unpleasant. That was for the web version.

Crystal Castle by oneowerse 2022-04-14T19:00:37Z

A cool idea, it took me a while to work out what I was doing, but once I did it was a novel idea.

* The artwork and aesthetic were good. Simple, but they gave it a unique mood. * I would have a different sound for going through the portal, I assumed at the start that the glass shattering was a bad thing.

Termination Notice by MorganMoon 2022-04-05T01:49:31Z

This is pretty great; a simple and funny idea, executed well.

Strangling by josep93 2022-04-06T22:59:07Z

I loved the art and the atmosphere. The audio was good too, simple but fit really well. the whole thing gave me Machinarium vibes.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-05T15:53:24Z

@lisyarus Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the design. The permanent cells are a feature not a bug, they are the source of the red stuff and are spawned by the red missiles. From the feedback I've been getting, I could have done a better job with the UI and UX, seems people are getting confused about how to play.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-06T15:17:47Z

@sam-minh Thanks for the feedback, creeper world was definitely a big inspiration. I thought about passive defences, but the balance and sense of urgency relies on the player being a little overwhelmed. It's definitely something to consider if I do a post-jam version.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-06T15:20:38Z

@quinn-patrick "one of the most bizarre, creepiest games I’ve ever played. Genuinely unsettling". This is high praise indeed XD, it is exactly the kind of tone I was going for. I am glad you enjoyed it.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-06T18:36:18Z

@nardandas Glad you enjoyed it. I agree about the source tiles, I'm thinking I will put some kind of sprite on them.

@abdonatioera Having popups to highlight low resources/stockpiles is a good idea. It's on the list for the post-jam version. Thanks for the feedback.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-07T19:48:33Z

@svemir Thanks, UI is definitely an area I need to improve.

@candlebird Glad you enjoyed the game. Difficulty is definitely hard to judge for Jam games. It randomly generates the grid too, so it can vary based on how lucky your start is.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-08T15:24:17Z

@stefan-funke @unpronounceable Thanks for the feedback. You have to intercept the enemy missiles with your own, that mechanic is directly inspired by missile command.

GrimTide: Delay the Inevitable by MartinK 2022-04-08T22:36:04Z

@christian-zommerfelds Thanks for the feedback! I agree about the theme, there's been a few games I've played that I wished didn't have an impending fail condition. I do plan on making a post-jam version, which doesn't force the defeat.

UI is easily the weakest part of the game, I will be re-working that.

Last Landing by alpqty 2022-04-04T23:47:14Z

Cool idea, I liked the intro cinematic. Perhaps zoom the camera out a bit, it was difficult to get a good view of the background or see where the ground was.

Destination Station by JM-Janzen 2022-04-16T14:24:46Z

This was a fun game, I played it a few times. The graphics and sound worked well together. Here's a few notes.

* There seems to be a difficulty spike in the mid game, if you get past that it's possible to achieve a stable state. * If you tab out the spawn rate of the travellers decreases. * It's hard to tell the upgrade stage of the circles from the image alone. More obvious variation would be useful. * It would be nice to have a skip or ok button on the tutorial popups.

Really nice entry.

Galactic Crash by Zerox 2022-04-08T15:36:54Z

Nice entry. * I missed the astronaut's text on the first attempt and was very confused for a few attempts because I couldn't find the valve. A button confirming the player has read what they said would have helped there. * The tasklist would sometimes clip off the edge of the screen.

LD53 — Delivery

Bloodrush -DELUXE- by Max Amaden 2023-05-19T11:43:53Z

This is a cool idea, the graphics and sound are simple but well done. Nice work!

I would perhaps change the time dilation activation and charge up to be a single button press, the double tap you currently have to do makes it feel a little clunky.

Mission Delete by jordantanner 2023-05-18T23:13:42Z

That was great, a superb level of polish and genuinely fun to play.

Give it a progression system like other survivor-likes and this could easily compete on Steam. You've got a gem here.

Delivery by Fragment Games 2023-05-18T14:50:31Z

The art, audio and mood were all great. I loved the atmosphere.

It would have been nice to see more gameplay. A more complex map, with less tanky enemies that could come from anywhere would have gone a long way to upping the tension.

W.O.O.T.: Warp-Optimized Order Transport by fachscahfttf 2023-05-17T14:24:36Z

This is my favourite game so far this jam, I loved the chill puzzle solving vibe it has. Nice work!

Some kind of progression where it gets more challenging to make connections further from the starting planets would go a long way to enhance the replayability.

Air Fast Chaos by MadR 2023-05-19T11:34:59Z

Simple premise, but executed well. Nice work. The help screen was a little confusing until I realised the notes were numbered, perhaps make that a little clearer.

Space Cargo by mipa111 2023-05-18T22:51:19Z

This was certainly ambitious. The art was definitely the best part, I like the ships design.

Some more destinations, with a choice of which package to deliver would go a long way to making the gameplay a little more interesting, without changing the core too much.
