LD33 — You are the Monster

Unsolicited by dukope 2015-08-30T11:59:00

I liked this technically, this is an awesomely polished product. But as for the entertaining part... maybe I didn't get it.
Extremely well done on the tech/polish side though!

The Monster In Me by echokain 2015-08-29T12:27:00

This is a nice little narrative game, I like how it plays. There are some typos though: extra words or chars, some words are missing - nothing serious, but it gets in the way a little.
Still a nice thing overall, congrats!

Trullskoll by charliecarlo 2015-08-25T08:42:00

Right on!
This is very, very good. I am with avultima above on not getting it how you got all this to work and play this good in just 48 hours. Maybe you've had some neat base code, eh? ;)
By the way, I liked the game a lot and it had me in for a _long_ time, but for me the most interesting part is the logic behind the reactions of animals. I mean, when they get hit - they run, that's clear. The interesting part is that they react when I do something next to them, but not to them directly: like I hit another animal close to them or I just miss - all that.
Would you care to elaborate on that in some kind of a postmortem? And what are your media channels that I could follow to get notified of a post of some sorts?

Also: throwing rocks just... ROCKS! And the armor is very rad!

Something deep by General 2015-08-29T22:54:00

Hey, this got me in for a longer time than I thought in the beginning! Which is cool. I've grown all of my tentacles, and now I will rule the ocean, yeah. :)
I liked the main mechanic, and how it expands into needing more than one tentacle - very good. The "level design" made a shot for the tasty surface swimmers an extra-difficult task, which also was cool. Also: the hidden humor in the main melody which makes it all so relaxed and soothing while really I'm devouring people, but from my ULTRAKRACKEN perspective that's a very relaxed nice day. :) Well done, Alexey.

The Walls Have Ears by Ysty 2015-08-24T14:26:00

Right ooon!
This is a very cool game and it is as solid, as a rock (and I mean hard rock, not some pop rock or smth). I like it especially that it looks very simple but plays so good and is full of fun and British accent. Have a great week after such a work. :)

Hindenboxer by Dining Philosopher 2015-09-06T21:27:00

A solid entry, I really enjoyed the gameplay, the controlls are also cool, and it is pretty engaging. I wonder if it would be also fun if the monster's hands could remember sequences or targets to hit - then you could go braver into a lot of enemy zeppelins. Also - zeppelins with 2-3 letter words?
A very nice game, well done, once again. :)

Munchy Crunchy Trolly Woahly! by OxyOxspring 2015-08-29T22:26:00

This is a nice one-button game indeed! Could you some more balancing, I guess, and maybe a bit more events to happen or tasks to complete, but overall very nice and fun to play. :)

Vicit Vim Virtus by Jod 2015-08-24T21:20:00

This is just glorious. It is well written and the plot is non-usual. I liked it very much, really, thank YOU for making it. I will sure as hell recommend this to people.

And now onto the bitter part. :) Aside from couple of typos, your one and only major flaw in this game is that goddamn shadow below the text. That is so bad I made a picture for you: http://prntscr.com/88gj7u :)
The text is very well written and the font is good, so reading the actual text is pleasant. But _that_ is an absolute no-no, please stop that. :)

And now please give me your Twitter-name or smth to follow you, I'll go create a fan club.

Can I Haz Monsters? by Omiya Games 2015-08-29T12:49:00

Hey, this is excellent! I loved how complete it was, there seemed to be no serious rough edges or smth. Talking to monsters is fun, they themselves are cool dudes/dudettes, and that monster jump is just awesome, I liked it.
Still - why a checkpoint on the final exit platform on Level 6? :) And I'd like a way to say thanks, at least to the provider monster on the level 6, who gave me all I needed. :)

Cheers!

Totem by Ian MacLarty 2015-08-28T23:35:00

I liked how I could just not care for the tiny people and all the bad things they had to say to me - I just minded my own thing, just walked slowly where I wanted, ground shaking with my every step.
That felt pretty good. Butt stomp was fun.
It stopped being fun when I lost the sense: I've made it to the right edge of the scene and understood I probably have to go back to the tiny people land, but I've none to do there, except for the butt stomping them. So I did that for a while and then felt myself completely bored.

Please do not see this as a critique, but rather as a playtest report that you could react somehow to if you want to.

I like how the totem is drawn a lot. :)

Power Corrupts by mortus 2015-08-24T19:45:00

Right on! I liked the visuals, the audio, the level design, the story and how it is delivered. Because this game was the first one I've played this LD, that brought my emotions up (Grimbergen Blanche also might've helped though). When they said I had to leave, I was like "SCREW YOU, you damn losers!", and when I got the ability to attack I was all like "Oooh yyyeeeeah! Come here, you armored slimeys!".
So there, a very nice game. One of the moments I'd like to see fixed though is the movement physics (it seems a bit slippery, I have to much inertia I think). The other one is this: http://prntscr.com/88fdm5 - I had to aligh myself veeeery precisely here to jump through, as my collider seems to be just the size of the gap. I think you might try making my collider a circle one (it's a Unity game, right?) - it would adjust my position in this situation, I guess. Also the colliders of the enemies are a bit larger then needed - they can kill me from one level above, if I stand too close. I guess you could shrink their colliders and the spikes' colliders a bit: it wouldn't take away the fun, but would be more forgiving.
Well done overall, anyway! Have a great week. :)

The Congress of Monsterdom by Artylo 2015-08-24T20:34:00

This is very cool. I just have a couple of suggestions:
1) make it more responsible by making the laser move and shoot faster, so that I wouldn't have to wait until it animates through it's frames and stuff, and then...
2) give me the reason _not_ to shoot; as JW Nijman said, "if you give a player a button, you also have to give them the reason not to press it, otherwise just make it autofire" (quotation imprecise); suppose, you could make more and less intense waves, and when I see that this very wave is small, I could choose not to shoot to recover more HP than I will lose in this wave - smth like that.

de-monstration by aprotasenya 2015-08-25T08:48:00

@EVERYONE: Thanks for playing, rating AND commenting! That's huge.

@Eingya: Shift should shift everything else you can do (starting with running).

@Arnage: I am not 100% sure, but it seems smth's working wrong with playing music. Sorry for that.
But a friend of mine said he was walking and chirping all over the place and de-monstrated successfully.

Monster in the House by Jani Nykänen 2015-08-25T07:05:00

I liked how it plays, but _man_ that's dark! A good take on the theme though, and mood is created and maintained 100%.

UMON by magenta 2015-08-29T13:06:00

Hi there! Really want to play (since it looks good from the concept and the screenshots), but the loading frezzes at around 45%: http://prntscr.com/8a8bbj
Or so it seems. I've waited for like 5-7 minutes. Should I wait even longer? :)

Ascent from Haydes by Nnnnneeeedddd 2015-08-24T13:58:00

Neat! I wish there was some goal and sense to everything happening, and I also wish I didn't lose my knife while going through the first portal (guess, I was "holding" it in my mouse, and the game transports either only me or me and what I have in my 3 slots).
Still very cool though. A good base for a full-fledged dungeon-crawling game if you ever want to make one. :)

Delicious Cortex by deepnight 2015-08-31T10:51:00

This is plain excellent. Thanks, I've had a good time playing this. :)

MOONSTAHR by benmcnelly 2015-08-25T08:03:00

Very cool audio/visuals, especially the minimap which is not the usual static schematic representation of the reality, but the actual reality shown from the cam somewhere above that's drifting and rotating a bit. That last thing is my favourite. :)

Echo, by Robert 2015-08-24T20:15:00

Very nice: minimalistic and innovative. I liked all the sounds and thoughtfullness behind them (like the fact that guards don't just shoot at sight but first call out like "Hey!"). And even though it's not tied to the theme that well, this is a nice little game, I should say.

Corruption-5 by hexagore 2015-08-24T18:41:00

Well done! I like the story and the visuals. Controls are somewhat clumsy. Do actions with Enter moving with arrows is not too comfy, I'd suggest at least doubling the controls: say, arrows and WSAD for movement, Enter and Space for the action.
Still, good job overall.

Frankenstein: Do-It-Yourself! by t4u 2015-08-25T07:39:00

This is a very good idea yet it needs elaboration and even more effort, I guess: aside from the story and graphics, the central combat/customizing mechanics could be greatly improved. What if I could change parts right in the battle? What if I started fighting other self-customizing enemies and we could both change our parts in battle? What if parts had more stats or I knew more about them (for I sense zombie hands could have a higher chance of missing, but it's not stated anywhere)? What if my body was divided into more parts? What if there were more specials, they were (at least thematically) tied to the parts I'm wearing, had names and different effects and all that? What if different parts gave lower/upper hand over some other parts and I had to customize myself in battle seing the enemy?

So if YOU liked the game, I suggest you work more on it and then show us all the very best version of it. Or just live it a LD-game, that's also fine.

P.S. Also: compound objects in Stencyl? That's sick! *thumbsup*

Too Late, Too Bitter by JackDegree 2015-08-24T13:16:00

Nice work on the stained glass! I've made a black-n-white game myself, but the color elude me, and you seem to be really good. Also - decent writing. I guess, #2 from your goals also went alright. :)

Meet the Monsta by Schrodinger Games 2015-08-25T04:41:00

Neat-neato!

Grave by uheartbeast 2015-08-28T23:45:00

Nice and solid! I've got the feeling that possibly my player was laggy a tiny bit? Gif looks smoother than was my gameplay. Anyway, there's potential for a greatly smooth and fast dynamic. Congrats on making a very good game! :)

No Pictures Please by Quetzakol 2015-08-24T19:03:00

Tricky puzzler, which does not look as such at the beginning. This is interesting. I plus to what Crypto137 said about the difficulty, though.
I liked how you introduce new mechanics and objects level by level and then reuse them. And the fact that the tasks of the level are bite-sized: nothing complicated, everything is simple to understand (but way difficult to perform at times).

Monster or Costume by fodinabor 2015-08-24T19:11:00

I liked the music and the aspect of the theme - that monsters could be just people in costumes. And judging by the name - only opening the page - I thought I'll be to decide who's in front of me: monster or a person in a costume.
What I'm trying to say: it shows that you've put some effort into this, but my guess is it could still use a bit more.
Anyway - congrats on the first jam! That's a thing to celebrate! :)

Oh! You Monster! by rodobodolfo 2015-09-06T21:19:00

This is very nice! I am really enjoying the humour and the overall gameplay. I thought that maybe signs on the boxes mean wat is "correct" to say to them, but it does not seem to work like that after all. Still, I think that would make the game easier, but even more cool.
Thanks, I've had a great time. :)

Mash It Down by Antonio Elizio 2015-09-06T21:34:00

This is very nice audio-visually and idea-wise, but MAN this controls are hard!! For me it was the main challenge - to overcome controls, to transfrom radial movement of two pads into my linear presses of left/right.
Otherwise a very good stuff. :)

Zero NPCs by samcoy 2015-08-24T13:49:00

As Mister_Melon pointed out, you really have to aim nearly a button's width to the left of the button to highlight it and click.
In level 1 I could not jump over the spikes - I try to jump as late as I can, but the jump is too low and the row of spikes is too long.

Youkai by Nibble Bits Studio 2015-08-29T00:07:00

Oh wow, this felt GREAT! It is smooth and quick, and all the feedback is in place except for my own death. Every time I died I rarely saw the one who killed me. Maybe some time freeze upon the exact moment his spear is entering my gut, and then an animation of me flying down to the ground or smth? :) I wouldn't advice making it long, what I'm trying to say: as I am fighting for the high scores and my mastery, dying - and having to try again - is actually a serious moment, but it is not treated this way. Yet? :)

Thanks anyway for such a great feeling game.

TORITO BRAVO by lubiterum 2015-08-28T23:51:00

Oh, that bitter motto about being the monster "for once"! That's a GOOD one! I never thought of this aspect of turning tables. You are good, guys, congrats. :)

When playing the built-in web-version here the control sometimes drifts onto the page itself, so down arrow or a space would actually scroll the page, while (I guess) also controlling the actions in the game.

Mindvasion by Fanaen 2015-08-30T11:47:00

Hi! This is a really nice puzzler, though it's a bit tough to get on board (I still don't get the "Send to kill" and "Swear..." buttons), and killing boss does not seem to work as a winning strategy (http://prntscr.com/8ak8hv).

I still liked it, it has a nice concept and the lust-scare-control parts are very well done.

The Old One by Chris Olsen 2015-08-28T23:59:00

This is extremely good looking, but took to much time to react to my key presses, I think, so it was a bit laggy on my computer (web-version).
The Old One - The Handsome One nonetheless. :)

Snake Strike by steve 2015-08-24T13:26:00

A nice little game! I didn't hear any sound, though (I thought this may be due to some problem since you've nominated in the audio category). And I wish there would've been some difficulty with the "enemies", some fail state. Since they are no threat to me I just had nice time smashing them, but still wish they would've fought back. :)
And - that's some crazy graphics! I really like the visuals.

Monster Twins by Jukepoks1 2015-08-24T13:42:00

Hey, that's a very nice little game! It is solid as in "has a fun gameplay, nice art and _very_ good level design IMHO". I enjoyed all of the levels - had some hard time on the last one, but due to the platforming reasons, not the puzzle ones.

Halloween Maskness by The Mad Strauss 2015-08-25T06:59:00

This is good! It creates the mood with it's music, sfx sounds, graphics and the (a bit) frantic action. I liked it a lot.
The only thing: I may be quick enough to push the needed buttons when symbols in the sky and the windows show for only a second, but the animations and sounds are not the fast. I liked them, but they are too slow to be the audio/visual feedback for such a quick gameplay, IMHO.
What I also liked in the mechanics is how the appearing symbols/events are distributed on the screen like their respective buttons on the keyboard. Catching this helps to be fast enough.

Sasquatch Loves Soup by lulublululu 2015-08-24T20:45:00

Oh, this is very cute! I liked everything from the clicking sound in the kitchen to the action levels.
I've met a bug though: on the second level I was able to accidentally leave throught the bottom gates and _immediately_ turn right: Nini went right across the "stats" panel and hid somewhere there. I wasn't able to get her/him back, though I'm positive she/he stayed alive in the scene - the roar worked just fine.
Anyway, well done there! A little fun game I'll recommend others. :)

Sefydlogiad by chameco 2015-08-24T21:49:00

This is fun and a good twist on the theme indeed, but those key bindings that are crazy and are seen only at the start of the game - damn! I would play more and have more fun if I had them contextually hinted to me in the game, I guess.

Monster - Your Worst Is Our Best by Ellian 2015-08-28T23:10:00

I liked this a lot! I would say the difficulty curve could be probably lowered a bit on Day 1, but overall this is a very cool game. :)

Yeti Destruction - Ski Resort by snade 2015-08-24T21:43:00

A cool thing! I'd like to be lower on the screen to dodge snowballs more effectively, but everything else is very cool. When jumping on the slopes I was always waiting he's gonna do some crazy flip mid-air. Liked the pine trees visuals, btw. Good job.

The Stowaway by BuffaloPhil 2015-08-28T23:23:00

Very nice in the mood and dynamics sections. It has gotten my emotions which is cool. Also - very good AI and overall very well done, especially as for the 48h timeframe. Cheers!
