Lovely text adventure.
I was the monster and killed the adventurers. :P
I also got puppies and kittens, not disappointed at all of this entry.
10/10 would click on the kitten link again

I think you made the most of your story. I like that before the fight you can only choose one option, if you could do all of them it would not be a gameplay choice.

I may have found a bug: in the second chapter, the game said "a killing so soon after another", but I had not killed the first adventurer.

pavel_insight 2015-08-24 12:32

Like to see interactive fiction on LD. :)
Monster who can read minds determines fate of adventurers... It sounds like a metaphor.

jod 2015-08-24 17:36

@pseudavid: Thanks for the heads up, I'll check that one out!

@pavel_insight: Not necessarily meant as a metaphor, but I'm pretty sure the 'You are the monster' lends itself well to it. Was there a metaphor you saw coming through as you played?

lucaredwood 2015-08-24 18:23

Cute :)

gene-z 2015-08-24 18:31

Great game... Nice work...

radiolemon 2015-08-24 18:44

This was an incredibly deep text adventure for me, thanks for making it to put out on the wonderful web.

boardtobits 2015-08-24 18:48

Nice little story, and an interesting twist on the theme.

valicitor 2015-08-24 18:59

Holy hell, I wasn't expecting the kind of ending I got, Very cool Text adventure

ceosol 2015-08-24 19:00

I am very impressed with this entry. The way you have the story laid out and even have part where you can change the story mid-sentence were all very well executed.

This may be biased, as I am a sucker for choose-your-own-adventure. I think you could easily make this into a full game that rivals text adventures like Wizard's Choice.

tigris 2015-08-24 19:05

You have nice writing skills.

increpare 2015-08-24 19:10

Pretty nicely written. I got into it :)

toomuchpete 2015-08-24 19:12

This was neat! It's probably impossible to write this much text in 48 hours and not have some grammatical errors, but the few I saw did occasionally break immersion for me.

I want to go back through and play a few more paths -- it would be nice if the decisions had a bit more weight to them for you OR if there were more backstory so that the affairs of the town were something I cared about more.

peterkirk 2015-08-24 20:46

I’ve always liked these sort of choose your own adventure text based games. Very good work.

aprotasenya 2015-08-24 21:20

This is just glorious. It is well written and the plot is non-usual. I liked it very much, really, thank YOU for making it. I will sure as hell recommend this to people.

And now onto the bitter part. :) Aside from couple of typos, your one and only major flaw in this game is that goddamn shadow below the text. That is so bad I made a picture for you: http://prntscr.com/88gj7u :)
The text is very well written and the font is good, so reading the actual text is pleasant. But _that_ is an absolute no-no, please stop that. :)

And now please give me your Twitter-name or smth to follow you, I'll go create a fan club.

rhythmlynx 2015-08-24 21:32

Very nicely written. Some minor typos and grammatical errors but they really don't matter when the story is so good

jod 2015-08-24 21:55

@aprotasenya: Thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate it. Also, your screenshot definitely made me laugh. No twitter-thingamajig to follow, though, sorry about that :).

sepharoth213 2015-08-24 22:10

This is a great concept, and it's really well laid out, but I can't help but feel that this idea deserves more than a twine. There is something about the way that I really want to express my discipline/bloodthirst on wary adventurers rather than guessing at what you think each decision means.

I think my main gripe with this twine is simply in that the tone is very personal, as if you were telling the story, but the character is supposed to be me. You speak for me through a character that isn't me and the abstraction makes it easy to understand the characters you created but difficult for me to empathize. Each path is essentially just a different story rather than a set of choices that let me express my take on the character.

Regardless, the adventure itself is complete and flows well. Congrats on the entry!

aberdeenphoenix 2015-08-25 01:30

Wow. This is truly an excellent twine take on the theme. I quite enjoyed myself. Played it twice.

sprawl 2015-08-25 04:05

Wow, That was quite surpising. Very enjoyable text adventure !

jod 2015-08-26 06:20

@sepharoth213: Thank you very much for your comments! I think it's really cool you noticed what you did, because my original ideas were a lot larger than what I ended up making. Due to time constraints (24 hours) I opted for Twine, but originally I wanted to add graphics and sound. Thanks for your feedback!

yuigoto 2015-08-26 22:19

Whoa! Amazing work on this text adventure, really. Well made, the branching and writing are really good and the story just feels right. :)

I wouldn't be able to think about a branching system like this. Really, congrats! :D

Cheers!

jannesn 2015-08-26 23:54

Great game! I am not the reading kind of person by I enjoyed playing until the end! And I am left wondering would could happen if I would have chosen otherwise - which is a good thing!

You should opt out graphics and audio by editing your ludum dare project page!

jackdegree 2015-08-29 17:21

Wow, one of the best text adventures I've played in a long time! Great first!!!

stalsbg 2015-08-30 19:00

Wow, just awesome. Played it only once but will defenetly go through a couple more times.

shaunlebron 2015-08-31 01:10

I was thoroughly surprised by the writing here. Really happy to see thoughtful writing on the consequences of the actions taken. Love the theme of the monster trying to temper his power as a God figure.

antokolos 2015-09-08 19:37

Very, very nice text adventure, I like it! Interesting approach with all these different adventurers.

robothobodanceparty 2015-09-09 06:13

I loved this! You have a great way of telling stories.
