Nice game!

callicou-jack 2022-04-03 20:30

the game is pretty

jonah-srg 2022-04-04 02:19

The art here is really great, love the color and animation. The scale and movement around the world is a bit challenging, I follow the lead and hope to avoid potential storm clouds. I like the motion and liveliness of the bee army, I feel like there's an RTS or some other kind of strategy game in here. When playing in browser, I was able to move really quickly when I gestured the mouse far outside the window. I'm not sure if that kind of speed is intentional, but it feels really nice to glide around.

appoxgames 2022-04-04 09:21

Polished and satisfying game. Only feedback I have is to increase the view since it was hard to navigate to the different places. Great game, well done!

danashrulez 2022-04-04 09:57

Really good entry! Loved that you added a few bee facts in as well :3 I do agree with the comment from appoxgames - it would indeed be a little nicer to a have a bigger view!

squaxcom 2022-04-04 10:03

@jonah-srg @appoxgames thanks for playing and the feedback :) I agree about the viewport, I should have made it zoom out a bit when you moved your queen to give a better view of the gamefield. Will do that in a post-compo update. Thanks

squaxcom 2022-04-04 10:04

@danashrulez thanks very much, I would have liked to have added more but my bee knowledge is low haha

gamedevalexandr 2022-04-04 11:33

it's not always easy to find flowers, but the game is cool

mixon00 2022-04-04 12:44

Great graphics! I love that pixel art! Awesome work!

foxwater 2022-04-04 14:06

Nice work! The sprites for the honey really cracked me up and the art style in general just reminded me of Paul Robertson's stuff (which is very much meant as a complement!). Animation is great as well with the bees swarming around the hive and the expressiveness of all of the sprites.

squaxcom 2022-04-04 14:15

@foxwater wow, thank you very much. I'm a programmer by trade but have been practising doing pixel dailies for the past 3 months to try and get gud. I regard Paul Robertson as one of the modern day pixel masters so that's a huge compliment, hopefully one day, with a lot of work I'll get close to his pixel pushing ability.

foxwater 2022-04-04 14:19

@squaxcom Nice! I'm also a programmer by trade and hobbyist pixel artist who started out doing pixel dailies!

oneowerse 2022-04-04 16:47

It was hard to understand, but the game was super :honey_pot:

squaxcom 2022-04-04 17:19

@oneowerse thank you :) I considered putting a tutorial for the first year, but ran out of time. The short rounds kind of help I think, as you kind of learn on the job :bee:

simpathey 2022-04-04 17:20

The art looks amazing! Top tier, I think the only thing I would change is giving more emphasis on exploring. Rather then follow the owl I would like the opportunity to go off on my own and find flowers. Really fun concept though!

black-flag 2022-04-04 17:50

I love the pixel art and the sound is very nice too! The playful mood set works very well with the gameplay, the visuals and the sound! The movement system was very creative too, having the bees swarm around the hive you guide, it also make it very satisfying when they manage to collect stuff! A wider fielder of view might have been helpful as I got lost a few times, but for the goes where I managed to keep track I really had a lot of fun. Overall, the incredible art and audio made the game really stand out!

castitatis 2022-04-04 21:30

The art is so nice and polished oO great game!

webox 2022-04-05 03:40

Super nice idea!! The art is incredibly amazing, it's a bit sad to know that the bees will eventually die :( .. The sound effects were a bit too loud for me. The movement mechanics are pretty original, at first it took me a while to realize that I had to click and hold. Really nice job!!

squaxcom 2022-04-05 03:55

@simpathey I'd love to have a purely casual game where you just explore a garden :)

@black-flag thanks for the great feedback and for the video review, some fantastic feedback for when I come to do a post-compo update.

@castitatis thank you very much :)

@webox thank you, sound was a bit last minute, I should have normalised all the sfx; will do post-compo update.

david-york 2022-04-05 04:59

Very pretty game. Excellent pixelate and a very unique concept I appreciated. Also great job on the sound.

s1lv3r-dr4g0n-games 2022-04-05 05:13

Took a few attempts to parse what was happening, but got there eventually. Also this pixel art is amazing.

jibberwocky 2022-04-05 09:12

The pixel art in this game is gorgeous, really neat simple concept as well. taking the queen bee to the corner of the screen seems to send me into turbo speed.

zimny11 2022-04-05 11:23

Nice game. The pixel art is awesome! I also like the music and the Bee facts too. A short tutorial would have been nice (it took me 2-3 tries to figure out in what directions I need to go to get the honey - I did not notice the text), but I get that there is only so much you can do in 48h :) The screen could have been a bit wider in my opinion, otherwise there is no way to see angry clouds before bees gets hit. Anyway, good job!

mascoll 2022-04-05 13:02

Amazing pixel art! It was a little hard for me to understand where the pollen would come from, I'm guessing the bees gather it outside screen? Other than that it was a fun little game! Great work!!

2022-04-05 16:09

Cute graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/v0i3VE06y_Y

nebiros 2022-04-05 19:04

I really loved the visuals of your game, as well as the controls which felt nice ! I just had a little bit of trouble on the clouds mechanic

chrissimas 2022-04-05 20:32

Loved this game, specially the visual and the theme! Also the "bee facts" at the end was a nice touch! 🐝💛🖤

squaxcom 2022-04-05 20:35

Thanks for the lovely feedback everyone :bee: I started implementing some changes ready for post-compo on your feedbacks so far: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/b-game/early-feedback

amberfall92 2022-04-05 20:36

Very cute game! I like the pixel art graphics and the nice sounds, but I couldn't figure out where to go. Maybe I missed it, but a way to know if you're heading in the direction of flowers, or if there is danger close by, would be really helpful.

cosmicallity 2022-04-06 04:22

Pretty interesting little game. I like the arcade-y feel and it looks nice!

martin183 2022-04-06 07:31

Nice game and cute graphics!

coderaurus 2022-04-06 08:06

Cute game! I really enjoyed the graphics and the music fit the mood perfectly. I was having trouble understanding what was going and I feel it would be clearer if the game was zoomed out a bit. The levels felt very RNG heavy and sometimes you had no chance of winning because next flower batch was miles away.

It seems the game starts during the load and you can miss the action, only hearing the sfx. Something I would prefer to experience myself.

Good job!

firstborn-unicorn 2022-04-06 09:20

Really cool art and sound design. The game is fun to play, thumbs up!

dobryn 2022-04-06 12:27

quite bouncy :)

enjoyed playing it, its quite fun. there is an overall vibe of fun to it. You are really good at pixel art.

tetrapteryx 2022-04-06 12:36

This is really fun and intuitive to play! The sound effects are so satisfying, and I love the art. Nice work!

apphons6 2022-04-06 14:23

cool game and nice art, felt like finding flowers was very hard even flying as fast as possible, am I doing something wrong? is there an indicator?

apphons6 2022-04-06 14:26

nvm figured it out, awesome game

yogurtthehorse 2022-04-06 18:59

One word: BEEtiful!

purpledartfrog 2022-04-07 07:24

Great stuff... :thumbsup_tone1: Simple concept and great look to the game :thumbsup_tone1: Couldn't quite figure out if there is an easy way to find the nectar or you just roam

sdelay 2022-04-07 07:44

Wow, that's really nice art! Looks sharpe and well-finished. I survived only one winter, I'll do beeter next time.

velvetlobster 2022-04-07 12:31

oh this is intense, lots of things moving around. I love the cloud

Captura de Tela 2022-04-07 às 09.31.12.png

ossi 2022-04-07 21:19

This is so adorable! I'm glad you put a little owl friend to help guide me cause it would have been tough to navigate with so many bees everywhere! I really like the graphics a lot, it feels very SNES and that makes me very happy! The bee facts between levels were really cute too! Great work!

clemonades 2022-04-08 01:04

This art is adorable! I love the owl!! Really cute, fun game, great job :D

phillip-scott 2022-04-08 10:43

Nice Art - all I wanted to do was to save the bees! managed to survive 7 winters. Good job!

jackaljk 2022-04-08 20:49

Ok so the music is really good but there are some sounds that are quite too loud. The art looks good but the game feels a little zoomed in too much, can't see enough of my surroundings to know where to go. I couldn't survive the second level twice because I didn't know which direction to go. The concept is cool tho!

ocwal 2022-04-09 11:56

Wonderfully weird game! :D

smoofy 2022-04-09 23:04

i love it. a bit hard to understand at first, but once you do understand, it just clicks. great work!

charq 2022-04-11 01:28

When I played the game on stream I totally didn't realize the little owl was my navigator *facepalm*. I think it would be nice to have a mini tutorial to make it more obvious. Really cute graphics!

Thank you for sharing your game on my Twitch stream (MsMiaChar). Here's a link to the video (game start around 02:24:00): https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1446760516

shrillwhip 2022-04-11 19:12

Really nice graphics! And fun gameplay concept, I just felt the game wasn't very clear at communicating the objective. It took some stumbling around until I figured it out.

boaromayox 2022-04-12 03:12

The graphics look so detailed, and the gameplay is simple enough to pick up. For my first playthrough, I got pretty lucky, and did not follow the owl, and went everywhere. I got lucky and found pollen, but I ended up running into those angry clouds the description warned about. For the second playthrough, I did get lost, even when I followed the owl, but I arrived to where the pollen was at. I made it too late, though. For playthrough number three, I managed to keep the hive alive for 5 years, then I ran into this bug because I clicked on the "end hibernation" button too quickly:

Screen Shot 2022-04-11 at 8.05.41 PM.png

Another little tidbit that added a nice touch to the game were the little trivia about bees in-between hibernation seasons if the player managed to succeed.

It's a nice game, though, it felt something's missing to make it memorable for me. Good job, anyway!

binaryprinciple 2022-04-12 23:47

I think you have the basis for a nice rage game or gotcha. I enjoyed a lot how the bees flock together and having me explore the world. The controls were well done, allowed me to concentrate in the game from the get go.

papabirb 2022-04-13 00:13

This is an excellent entry. I remember being confused by the graphics during the jam when you were posting development gifs, but I got here from your post-mortem and I gotta say, I had fun.

- The music for hibernation is great, it sounds really 'winter'-y. - The level music is a bit more chaotic than summery, yet I feel like it suits the chaos on screen. - I was confused quite a bit in general, but coin pickup sound make brain do serotonin, so that was fantastic. - I saw on your post-mortem about the flower radar; I think the owl is already the perfect flower radar system, it just needs more contrast with the flower patches/bees. (Is it wearing a little bee hat though? Very cute!!) - I had a hard time figuring out what counted as colliding with the rainclouds. Sometimes I saw them on the borders of the screen and my bees would touch them and be fine. Seems like my bees only got burnt to a wet crisp if *I* touched the clouds? - I kept spawning on flower patches so I ended up surviving for a while before the difficulty increases got to me. I think I died on year 11 or 12. - Which is to say: I wish it said at the end what year I died on so I could share! - I also wish it said how much honey I need each year during the level. I couldn't remember the tiny font from hibernation after being thrown into the colorful chaos. - I actually think it was a bit too easy and was wishing the difficulty would increase faster, but that might be because of the honey surplus I had from all the spawning on flower patches. Once I actually started losing like 2k honey at a time, I was struggling.

And god, the art is SO PRETTY. I'm so fascinated for Match Bee! I love match 3 games and it looks like an interesting take on the genre without being exactly a match 3, based on the video you posted.

I used to consider myself a pixel artist who became a programmer, but man, if this is what programmers can make after being consistent with pixel dailies, turns out I'm just still a mediocre artist, lol. I never remember to do pixel dailies, I really should.

That being said, you might consider a more muted background for the itch.io page. Those neon blue clouds and bright graphics look good in the game, but are a little overwhelming when it's also most of my screen and not moving around, kind of an eye pain thing though that might just be me cause my eyes are a little sensitive to bright colors. Though, I guess that's also on me for not using fullscreen lol, I just like my games to not be fullscreen usually. Then again, if I used fullscreen, I'd still end up with those neon clouds being my entire screen, so hmm... I dunno, my sensitive eyes thought it was just a bit too bright, but it IS very coherent and beautiful. I wouldn't necessarily change it, just something to consider when picking palettes for games: viewers with sensitive eyes or viewers with various types of colorblindness. Might consider offering the option of alternative color palettes in an option screen for situations like that.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say with my essay is I loved it! Good work and if you ever release the Match Bee version for testing or playing, I'd love to see it!

cerno-b 2022-04-13 20:41

You absolutely nailed the graphics, the game really stands out in that regard. It's funny and has a lot of character. Everything is so wacky and frantic, very well done. From a technical side, this is just a pet-peeve of mine, but I'm not really into mixed resolution pixel art. It takes a lot of the charm out of the game for me personally when the resolutions clash. Of course, having pixel-perfect art means that scale effects often don't look that great, but it might be worth a shot to try what the game would look like on a fixed grid. I think if you do make a mixed-pixel art game it is necessary to make sure that it still mostly feels like a single resolution. It's a bit of a shame because the graphics are really front and center and a core part of the whole experience.

Another minor annoyance was that the cursor was so small. A custom pixel art cursor would have been great, because I had some trouble hitting the start banner every time a stage was completed.

Cool to see 1BitDragon to be put to good use. I just discovered it myself when I saw someone else talk about it on the main page. I have played around with it a bit and like it. Seems it aid you well in writing nice music for your game.

Gameplay-wise it took me a bit to understand that I should follow the owl and avoid the rainclouds, but then it was pretty smooth sailing until I forgot about the owl again and started off in the wrong direction which spelled my immediate doom.

Again, you made one of the best-looking games I have played so far with a lot of charm. I think it could have used a little more depth to the gameplay itself, but what you did offer looks and plays great. Definitely a memorable entry among the ones I have played so far. Great job!

nyxkn 2022-04-15 09:01

Really beautiful art! This game is so charming! Owl was a little confusing at times and wasn't really sure where he was pointing. Sound effects and music are also really on point. Very very good and cohesive game!

hmightypirate 2022-04-17 17:48

Graphics and sound are amazing!. I just think I need a hint of what to do or where to go to find the flowers but I think the game has potential.

mmason 2022-04-19 20:54

Cute little game, I wish it was a bit more zoomed out
