Congrats on submitting a game using your own custom engine. I've done that in the past and it isn't easy. Kudos as well for having an HTML5 version with a C++ game engine. Nice work.
As for the game, it a pretty smooth experience. That "mmmm" sound after attacking a guy was a bit too sensual for me, but it was good comedic relief. The mouse sensitivity was a bit high for me, so controlling where I was going took a bit longer than I would have liked. Overall though, everything worked well and was fun up until I got shot by a silver bullet.
This looks cool, but for some reason I can't get it to load in my browser. In both Firefox and Chrome I get stuck on this screen: https://i.imgur.com/P1azwaL.png Right after getting the "initialising" screen. Music is playing, but nothing ever happens. Am I supposed to hit a certain key?
@nick-rafalski It's not supposed to freeze there. :frowning2: Is there anything in the logs (Chrome: View -> Developer -> JavaScript Console) that you can share with me to help debug it?
Graphically pleasing and the audio was fun too. The lunge feels so satisfying. Great work, this entry needs more attention!
@gwinnell I think I figured it out. Somehow having my Logitech Extreme 3D joystick plugged into my computer was causing the issue:

Once I removed it, those exceptions went away and I can play!
Nice technical challenge and really cool game. It's just may be a little bit too easy but great work anyway!
Nice entry! Smooth controls, nice visuals, nice sound. Took me a second to realize where the exit was. Keep up the good work!
Super smooth and juicy. Well done!
Wow. I'm thoroughly impressed. Artwork was amazing as well as the mechanics. And a custom game engine. Great job
@drschizzo Thanks! There are 'par' times for some replay-ability in case it's too easy. Wish I had time to make more difficult levels/enemies though!
This guy - who would dash at you - didn't quite get finished... Screenshot 2020-04-21 at 20.23.17.png
I love the art and audio. The attack was also satisfying. Only negative was the level difficulty not being consistent. Good job
I finally played the game after my technical difficulties earlier. It's really good! I didn't quite realize how far I could lunge on my first play-through, so I died on the 3rd level. After I realized I could lunge quite a bit, it became much more fun. Lunging from victim to victim in a tight room was really juicy and satisfying.
My only criticism is that the hitboxes (or equivalent) on the blood vial pickups seemed too small. While the rest of the game has a really forgiving margin for error (attacking things, moving through doorways, etc) I found myself *just* missing the vials pretty often and having to double-back.
Overall, still one of my favorite games played so far. Nice job!
Fun game and interesting take on the theme. I really like the art style the teeth closing animation was a clever feature. Gameplay was smooth. Nice work.
Haha we had the same idea ! I wrote a 3D game engine from scratch but it was way more time consuming than I expected. So thanks to this experience I can realize how impresive your game is ! This is so clean for only 48 hours of work, sound, game engine, graphism eveything is really really smooth and fun to play. Amazing job !
Great job! The graphics and music really help bring this game to life (pun intended). I found the third level to be quite the jump in difficulty, and I think it has to do with the ranching path, and how you had to ignore the enemy shooting at you to collect the blood vials in that little room. Also, while I thought the underlying mechanics were well done, the controls needed some tweaking; the mouse is far too sensitive, but the keyboard is too slow. For short game jams like this I found I can quickly adjust the sensitivity by binding it to the scroll wheel.
Fun game, and brilliant theme execution, well done :D
@niterich You might be right about the branching in level 3. I hadn't considered that a factor, and should have introduced a branching pathway on an easier level first. Not entirely sure about how to fix sensitivity yet, it does it based on mouse pixel movement, and if there are different screen resolutions and user-defined cursor speed it can vary quite a lot. Mouse wheel seems like a quick fix for jams though. Thanks for the feedback. :v:
@nick-rafalski Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the leaping! I just checked the code (I couldn't help myself) and it seems that the pickups actually have a _bigger_ hitbox than everything else! I think the issue might just be that there is less feedback when touching them, and that their sprites are smaller too, and so you often you can't tell if you picked it up or not. Thanks for the feedback though. Made me realise a few things.
I experienced the same issue as @nick-rafalski, but with a generic USB controller I have plugged in to play PS2 games on an emulator. The issue went away after unplugging it, just the same. Here's the console: chrome_kpa4Ae5Vrm.png
I absolutely dig the music and sound effects and all the visuals (the oval vignette really feels like looking through the eyes of a monster, especially paired with those tiny little hands, although I guess based on the chomping animation we have more of a mouth-eyed view? terrifying to imagine what this vamp looks like from the front), level 3 is definitely a big difficulty increase from every other level in terms of complexity and time needed. Then it gets easy again afterwards. I'd have had level 3 as the last level since it's longest/the most complex. I'm really impressed you created your own 3D game engine though! I don't think I know enough fancy coding yet to make my own engine (although now I kind of want to one day), the best I could do is maybe code a 2D game from scratch with the right libraries and tutorials, certainly not an entire engine to make games with, so that's pretty impressive. I assume that you made it pre-jam, but if you made your engine as part of the jam then that's incredible.
@papabirb Wow, what a feedback!
Hello ! Nice game ! Nice sound and nice mood ! It's good work :)
This was one of the best I've played. The soundtrack is an absolute banger and the pounce mechanic is so satisfying! Congrats on building your own engine too. I only experienced one bug - the coffin at the end of the level sometimes would not work at all, and I had to restart it several times. But the scared soldiers were so satisfying! and the first person view gave it an old-school Doom feeling, which was cool too. I really enjoyed it!
Great job!
@gwinnell I liked creepy melody, it added a lot to the atmosphere. DOOMish look and feel is nice and bouns points for using custom engine, that's reayll impressing. For me sensivity was quite way to fast and uncontrollable. I liked level design and variety in enemy roster. Overall the game reminded me of cool and funny custom mode of SEGA game "Zero Tolerance", assuming that ZT devs could provide Mod Cartridge these days in the past
Very fun game! The pacing and the attack mechanic is very satisfying, it is fun to play - customizable sensitivity controls would probably make it perfect, I see in the comments here I was not the only one having issues.
Extra kudos for compiling a web version!
Reminds me of the first person parts in the snes jurassic park game, it was doom like and there were raptors that attacked in similar ways as you do in this - with the distorted screams too. Anyway this is a great little game, like the color palette, runs really well too, so it feels fast paced. The mini map is a nice touch. Good job! Cool moon!
really nice touch - was reminded of doom and love playing a vamp. voice and sounds were fun, too. mouse control feels a bit crazy, but that might be my own settings. the 2d/3d mix is both interesting and confusing.
That .gif preview really sold me in. Overall, really nice, I don't have any criticisim. You seem to know your stuff well
Very cool, I like this "style" of mashed 2d/3d you pulled it off really well! nice job!
Glad I saw your post by accident. Great stuff. It felt like Doom
Was a really fun game! It's like someone took the Berserk powerup from the new DOOM games and made a full game out of it - which is a-okay in my books!
The mouse sensitivity was a little high for my tastes at first, but I got used to it pretty quick (it's not hard to miss enemies with the lunge so it wasn't a big issue). But I never really felt challenged, which can be good if there was a bit more variety in the kill animations.
Obviously though, it's a jam - you made a game in your own custom engine, that's impressive enough! Just if you were to take it further, either add some more challenge to the levels, or try to take the kill animations even further! Preferably both.
Great entry though, bloody brilliant!
very good, I could not found a bad point in game
Brilliant! Really good game. The difficulty increased appropriately and the game was fun to play. The graphics were amazing and the audio was fitting. I enjoyed the gameplay and thought it was unique, great for the theme of the jam, and deserves high ratings. One improvement could be changing the attack force forward, as sometimes I got a little lost as to what way I was pointing. Very impressive game overall!
Genius man! I loved everything about your game. 5/5!! Seems that we were the only ones with the vampire approach to the theme. Downloaded the windows version for posterity

Huh, the site thinks I got mentioned by 11 different people on this game about an hour ago, but I only see the one mention by @room606 2 hours ago. Was there some spam I missed??
Whoa, so much feedback overnight!
@papabirb Looks like there might be a bug with the LD site! I have uploaded a new version -- does this work with your controller plugged in? I only have a Xbox 360 controller and a Rock Band guitar (LOL) to test with here. Both work. If you could re-check that would be really amazing.  (No other changes.)
@forgeronstudio The coffin would only open when all enemies are dead. The sprite isn't much different though, I could have made that more obvious with some 'locked' text on it, or an alert text when all enemies are dead! Doom/Wolfenstein is definitely the vibe I was going for.
@room606 Thank you. Melody is a bit "phantom of the opera". I actually had Zero Tolerance on the Mega-drive as a kid! I don't recall any custom modes though... maybe I'll have to dig it out from my parent's attic for future inspiration.
@eldogg Leaping raptors in Jurassic Park sounds fun! I'll have to check it out. Thank you! Not sure what I was thinking with that moon-face though!
@tom-robson New DOOM is definitely on my list of games to check out! Is that Berserk ability in Eternal or the 'still quite new' one from a few years back? Thank you for your kind words. I'm not yet sure how I will make it more challenging, but yeah, lots to think about!
@emperor-eagle You're right. I did find that myself too actually. Thanks for giving me that second opinion. I think having more unique/different wall sprites would have helped with this. You should see how I had to design levels though, no time to get specific wall sprites into this level data! It's a png image. :joy:

Thank you all so much! If I haven't played your game yet, I will try to very soon. :hugging:
It works with my controller plugged in now. I recommend having @nick-rafalski re-test it again too now to see if it works with their 3D joystick plugged in. Also, the level data is just pngs of basically pixel art minimaps? That has super possibilities for level editing/community mods if you ever want to make a game like that! Is that custom-engine-based or specifically this game's code? Because I'd be super interested in making 3D map layouts using just 2D pngs.
super fun!!! and pixel-based level design... genius!
@gwinnell Hey no worries, challenge is a hard thing to get right! Don't sweat it, just keep making the game and you'll get there eventually! As for the DOOM discussion... Yeah it's in both of them, though I only found it once in Eternal haha
Good old wolfenstein 3D feel! I like it! It has the right vicious atmosphere thanks to music and maybe dashing/killing. It was really nice!
Whoa, really nice graphics and audio. I really dig this DOOM style 3D where just the scenario are 3D and the rest are 2D sprites. So nostalgic.
The gameplay are really smooth, that core mechanics are easy to understand and assimilate but the game is hard. Excellent job on this entry!
Awesome compo entry, no obvious rough edges in my play through. The lunge is really satisfying, but I found it very difficult. Well done!
A mouse sensitivity option would be helpful, but that's a lot to ask for compo. Loved it.
Awesome game, i love it! I haven't seen any such ideas in LD46 yet - it's very original. Amazing graphics, music, and gameplay. Well done! I think this game will take a place in my personal top games from LD46 ))
This was a great time, especially for just being a compo entry! Loved the graphics and general feel, I never grew up with these sorts of games but I can definitely see why people enjoy it. I would've liked the field of view to be a bit bigger and the mouse to be a little less sensitive, but that's very minor stuff. My biggest issue is that I'm not really sure where the theme is. Sure, you're keeping the player alive, but that feels like a very safe interpretation to me personally, unless your intention was something different. Either way, I really enjoyed it overall, definitely keep it up!
This is a really solid entry :)
The POV from inside the mount with the teeth in the middle is so creative. This is one of those entries that we call a "hidden gem". Maybe you should write about the game more in the blog and comment more on other games to grab more attention :) I'd love to see your notes about using your C++ engine as well.
@mathstr0fficial The player health/blood is in the corner and is _running down all the time_ - you have to pounce on enemies/drink blood to refill it, and so kind of have to speed run the levels too. I think without this it would not fit the theme at all, but with this it fits.
Unholy crap, nice game! That was fun, and a fantastic way to keep it alive. Awesome entry, and a lot of fun. Great entry.
For anyone interested - I've put together a video showing step by step how the game came together.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTQc133Aex0
This is SUPER fun! I loved both the animations and the sound effects. And I always wanted to eat the football team  Everything in this game just comes together so well - it's energetic, it draws you in and keeps you there.
Graphics is simple but does the job well. Sometimes I got completely turned around after feeding on a tasty football player and it took a second to get my bearings. But that's just me ;).
I noticed one bug - I tested, and I was able to reproduce it 100% of the time. When playing a web version, after you press F to go full screen, mouse clicking doesn't initiate feeding (clicking just does nothing). Up arrow still works fine and after you press up arrow once, mouse clicking starts working.
I managed to beat the Par only on level 2. But still!

As a fan of early id Software titles I really, really love the aesthetics of this game. I like how drinking blood is visualized. And enemies running away from me in fear fills my blood-shot eyes with tears of joy ;) I wonder if there were any secret passages in game, since the tight gameplay prevented me from exploring much. Tight gameplay is probably a good thing here, though! Music track is on spot! Now, for some reason I couldn't use my mouse in fullscreen mode (Firefox on Linux). I really missed sensitivity settings, since with my mouse the game was overly sensitive! Overall great compo entry!
If you wish to continue development of this game, I have some ideas that you may or may not find interesting. You can introduce some silverware to the game. Like a silver candlestick, if you walk into it - you get hurt. Another idea is turning into a bat to access some places. This could be a good mechanics to introduce non-linear map exploration, like secret doors did in Doom levels.
