Art is really beautiful but the game is quiet harsh!!
I'll have to come back to this game later
I love the mechanics..
**It's a hard game**
But.. not impossible..
Love it so far.
Like I said, rate you later!
Neat Idea!, i wish the character was a bit more fluid in the movement
Pixel art is really great, I love and a difficulty that goes well with the theme of the game!
i love it. the graphics are really cool and one shot killing fits with samurai fighting
mood is good, art is wonderful, this game is way too unforgiving with rng mechanics, archers in particular seem to be able to shoot whenever they want and just get cheap kills on you since they seem to be able to shoot faster than you can block if they so choose. not very fun dying to archers randomly firing shots when you go for the attack.
Ugh, archers being able to shoot in any angle is a bug, I'll fix it! Thanks for the comments! I ran out of time and there are many things missing that I planned. I'll do a post-compo version for sure
The art is really awesome, as a game, there is some details that make it a bit frustrating, the parry sometimes don't work as I expected and the delay to revive is a pain. I really liked the enemies, the Samurai dashing and slashing at you makes you feel so good when parrying. Overall, I really liked it!
Love the art style and gameplay. Difficulty is hard but it feels quite rewarding when you go past yet another enemy (I'm still crap tho, reached a big guy once and died instantly  )
Sound would make it perfect (I'm currently playing a "winter sounds" video on YT to get in the mood and it already makes a difference).
Amazing entry, congrats!
Amazing graphics and honestly, the difficulty is great because the controls are tight enough for you to feel that if you die it's your own fault, not the game's. Except for the archers but I see that other people pointed that out already. Stellar entry!
Amazing game! It is so beautiful and fun to play! I also made a game about samurais! :)
Great graphics. I just saw you're a programmer but you have a great style too.
I think you can be proud about what you achieved with those graphics. The game is truely beautiful. I had a hard time to understand the timing, and having to start all over again at each new ennemi encounter because you have to learn his specific pattern was a bit harsh. Other than that, it's reaaaally a great entry. Well done!
The graphics are insane, and the game is fun. It feels like Dark Souls, in the sense that the game does not forgive any error you would do, and you can die each frame if you're not paying enough attention. I really like that. I felt some issues with the parry + jump, like I died in mid air while blocking, or just when I landed, I don't know, but there's some things curious about this combination. Just detail tho
Amazing game ! It's a really hard game but this challenge is a part of things that makes this game so interisting ! Beautiful characters (I love the samurai main character) and beautiful background ! Congratulations !
Gorgeous! I like how hard it is. The graphics are fantastic!
The graphics of this game are really great and I liked the difficulty level ^^ It was fun to overcome the enemy types but I have honestly no idea how to beat the samurai when I manage to survive that far. The game could use some music and sounds and also maybe an easier beginning that builds up to harder enemies because at the beginning i died a lot of times only to the first archer. Great game after all ^^
Thi pixal art is the best that I've seen yet this LD. I love the mood that you can feel thanks to the art. The game itself seems to be too hard for me to finish, it's insane to go trough it without getting hit once. :D But I really love it anyway!
Really beautiful game, and fun. Great work :)
Here I am, fellow programmer-artist ;) All I see here is beautiful, it's 5 on 5 for graphics and mood. Too bad we can't do everything in a short time, but what you did is a complete perfect game with context and an opening scene. I enjoyed playing it even if I had some trouble with the commands (no mouse here, so was tricky!). Still thinking about a that snowy background and the petals <3.
I enjoyed a lot the pixelart and the concept, also I had lots of fun!
Maybe the game is too hard, I managed to kill 3-4 man, and I played a lot (maybe 20-25 minutes)
Thanks for your work, it's very polished and well crafted
Definitely maxed out the rating on the graphics. Damn it looks good! congrats just on that. The game itself is also fairly well polished with a intro scene and a simple but efficient mechanics. The counter effect has the perfect game feel. Such a shame there was no time for basic sound effect and it would have been perfect. Great Job!!
Love the art. Love the aesthetic overall.. the cold, barren story, and the cold, barren landscape. Animations are great too. Great take on the theme, my fav so far.
It's so hard though!! I made it to 15. As someone who loves Hyper Light Drifter (which this reminded me of in many ways) and Dead Cells (bit there too)... woof. Mostly it's just the time investment, relative to having to start over every time, and get back to the enemy whose mechanics I'm trying to master. Maybe I just have a beef with roguelikes, I said that about the bosses in Dead Cells too.
Great work.
I'm impressed by graphics, aesthetics and animations... This is not a game, this is a piece of art! It's such a shame there's no music or audio (especially when you have submitted to Jam so you could use existing free music).. So I'm playing it with second half of Ramin Djawadi's track "The Night King" (from the GoT S8) and it goes together pretty well ;)
Well, you are a very good artist and you din't even know? This was one of the most beuatiful games that I've played so far! Great job! It's soooo hard, but I get the mood. This one it's worth to keep working!
this is truly a work of art, reminds me of momodora ... found the controllers to be somewhat slow though, whenever I think of Momodora I expect really fast responding controls and it was a bit slower than I expected ... awesome entry!
Really beautiful art. It's a pity that because of the high difficulty I couldn't get too far for a few attempts so I didn't see everything. Also, the absence of music reduces the atmosphere that the game could have. Nevertheless, it's a great entry.
If you decide to continue in the development, it's a must-buy for me (ideally if the game will be more forgiving).
Ok, first off, this game is crazy difficult, so I will leave a guide to how to beat the game at my next comment.
Game is so aesthetically beautiful that I felt the need to complete the game. Lack of music and SFX does hurt the game though, but I managed to supply myself with a nice bgm while playing it. The freeze frames per impact is a tad bit too long, and I find myself wishing that the time per restart is shorter, due to the number of deaths I had. Also the lack of a closure is a bit disappointing (Unless I bugged it out somehow?).
It is still a really beautiful game, with enemies who are designed to test your understanding of their attacks and your timing. Great work.
Art is wonderful, but my god its hard xD
**Guide:**
- Archer: - Have 2 attacks, a straight shot and a jumping shot - If he does a straight shot, jump over it and slash him, be careful not to jump too early, because you will be hit by his 2nd shot - If he does his jumping shot, either back off and try again, or pray you don't get hit - If you parried his attacks for whatever reason, back off immediately, you won't have time to attack before he shoot his next arrow - For the part with 2 archers side by side, slash the first one as per normal, back off, and then go for the 2nd one - Ninja: - Have 2 attacks, a direct attack and a jumping attack - Learn how to time and parry his direct attack, and slash him directly after - If he jumps, just chase after him for an easy kill
- Red Armored Samurai: - Get barely in range to trigger his attack, and immediately back off - After his attack, he is basically a sitting duck, and can only block your attacks, just keep slashing him til he dies - I don't really understand his blocking mechanic that well, but I do find that slashing him when your face is at the spot of his sword hilt as he is blocking tends to kill him
- General tips: - Memorise the types and locations of at least the first 10 enemies, this will help you get back faster after you die - Go **SLOW**, you will be able to see the archer and the red samurai before they can attack, and this also give you time to see and react to the ninja - Practise your parry against the ninja, he will appear a lot throughout the level
@conspite That's amazing! thanks for helping the players! I wanted the game to be difficult but fair, but with limited time I feel the balance is off. for a post-compo version I'm working on improving timings and on more interesting behaviours for the enemies, as well as new types.
Effing amazing graphics :D And hard, very hard.. Very nice work. Would like to be able to create a mood like that.
Really cool little game! Loved the art and the feel of the character, I kinda wish there was audio though, it would have completed the game!
One issue was the alternate controls, they don't work well for a WebGL only build, mainly the block, because Alt causes you to lose focus on the window, which can kill you, so you're kinda forced to use WSAD and mouse.
Great effort!
@refraction Yeah, that's a problem thanks, I didn't test that version enough. Doesn't happen if you go to fullscreen mode, but i'll think about alternate controls.
Beautiful! The parallax is perfect.. and gameplay and flow is fantastic.. make it a full game for sure! Steam Release!
So beautiful graphics! And I love the blocking operating, too. Congrats!
Very polished and atmospheric. The only thing missing is the audio. I think some ambient music would really improve it. I like the combat. The amount of impact and screenshake is just perfect. One thing that is annoying is that the archers can decide use to double or single arrows randomly and their is no visual cue. But I know that It's always hard to fine tune things in such a short time frame.
Really hard game but SO beautiful! You did a great job with the mechanics, your actions just need more frequency AND reaction time. Harsh games usually give the player no waiting time to jump back into action (see Super Meat Boy, Cuphead, etc). Still fantastic for a jam game!
@palsina Great art in this game. Is the character scarf a physics cloth? I've always wanted to mess around with that. It adds a lot of feel to the character movement. Gameplay is a bit unforgiving as others have said but I do like the block mechanic. Nice work!
@jordantanner Yes it is, it's just a bunch of hinge joints chained together, and then I use their transforms in a line renderer. I used the official Unity tutorial about hinge joints, it's easy really and helps give the illusion that there is more animation than what's actually there.
I like the atmosphere and the mood. The controls are a bit messed up on mac, because when you press control and an arrow key you switch desktops. Otherwise very well done!
I love it! This game is definitely in my top 5. However, this game NEEDS music and SFX without question to take it to the next level. Even if its just environmental ambient sounds. Maybe add some different attacks/weapons for variety. The difficulty works well as it feels more tactical. How far are you considering taking this game? Please don't abandon it! I think this could be great :)
The game is gorgeous and would be even more immersive with music ! It's a bit hard to play with an azerty keyboard though, it would have been great to be able to jump with the up arrow.
Really pretty game. Did need sounds and music. My brain had to make up what was going on. I could just hear the oriental music twanging through the trees.
This game is gorgeous. The parallax effect mixed with the falling snow and other particles gives this game a calming effect, which is juxtaposed with the brutal nature of the gameplay. The game is quite difficult, which I could see being a high barrier to entry for some. I also think the addition of music and sound effects would go a long way to adding to the overall mood of this game (which is already impressive). Really great job on this. Thanks for making it!
man that game is hard! It's a 2d dark souls. The run up to the first enemy was a bit long and i had to do it 50+ times.
It is hard, but it is beatifull... Really nice art you did here. Would be great to have some sounds, but overall really nice Entry. Good Job!
What a beautiful game. The whole artwork is so impressive. I loved the artstyle. The Game mechanics are also pretty straight forward and feeling really good.
Great Job, well done. Keep creating stuff :)
Really great graphics, one of the best I've seen so far. It's a shame there is no audio because it kinda kills the mood, it would be such a glorious experience with audio. And for me the game was kinda too hard and punishing, I've got frustrated quite fast after being killed several times. But overall really good entry!
Wow, just wow. Beautiful graphics with very good animations and fx. Only downside music and difficulty. Finally a progressive difficulty so not really a flat Excellent work ;)
Great feeling and play with "minimal" effects...which are not minimal...but just feel really pure and light. Loved it!!! :)
Awesome graphics and animation, the vfx of most of the interactions are awesome, the lifting snow and the scarf add weight to the character ...
You should enhance that at least with some ambience sounds and effects ... like the hail storm, some howling wind, the footsteps on the snow, maybe wolfs howling in the background, her cloth shrugling and the equipment shaking, her breath and some grunts upon attaking or taking damage ...
A music would also be something meaningful to build the tension as you decrease the number of deaths.
That second gif is epic...
Art is amazing!!!!
The pixel art is fantastic. But the game is to hard.
