Nice game!As always

backurio 2018-12-03 21:06

As always the graphics and the sound are top-notch from Noa, but I expected a really awesome game because Noa was not working alone this time. It's really sad that it just turned out to be a top-down shooter, Noa created a few times already. No real innovation on this side and the game was not really fitting the theme for me.

Sorry about that.

Bugs: - The movement seems to have a bug, because some times i just can't move anymore. - Is it a feature or a bug, that the ghosts can't be killed and you have to run around in circle all the time? - Should there be no additional boss when reaching level 8?

PS: I liked your second small game a lot more Noa. :smirk:

dk5000p 2018-12-03 21:18

@backurio that is the issue with having click and arrow key controls in the browser, you can get some weird interactions. Main reason I try to avoid mouse controls in my games.

dk5000p 2018-12-03 22:00

I personally am finding the game pretty difficult but it is fun. I feel enemies should not spawn when you are deciding on your upgrade. I feel the theme was only loosely represented. The game looks great and I enjoy the sound effects. Some music would have been nice. I did enjoy the story also and the intro.

2018-12-04 05:18

can you share the source code?

arkinrev 2018-12-04 05:47

Fantastic work from both of you. Solid art, sound, very juicy, and a lot of crisp gameplay. The movement control swap was the most difficult change. After doing it a few times, I decided to never choose that again, the reward just wasn't quite as good as the penalty. And on a side note, thank you for all of the videos you both put out. I don't think I'd have entered into this jam without binge watching both of you for the past few weeks. Keep it up!

bgamedev 2018-12-04 09:35

Nice game. Because of your and Brackeys videos I decided to participate in this Ludum Dare. The results of this I hope is fine. Thanks for the motivation.

azamatika 2018-12-04 10:12

Controls starts to bug , as i noticed, after 100 kills for me. I pressed nothing and hero still moves.

mara 2018-12-04 10:13

Beautiful graphics.

I was a bit worried to sacrifice standard control scheme until I discovered that I can do that twice.

pacman 2018-12-04 10:17

This was great, the gameplay was really enjoyable and the graphics were amazing

najmm 2018-12-04 10:23

Great game. But due to the window embedding, the full-screen button on Unity's WebGL interface was out of reach for me.

justcamh 2018-12-04 10:29

This is certainly an ambitious game, with numerous enemy types that react reasonably varied. There is room for critique however, and here it is. The default screen size is a bit too big, and for us laptop users, we can't see the full thing, even when fullscreened. Instead, Unity gives us these horrible scrollbars, which looks and feels yuck. I experienced some odd feedback from the controls, and not because of the swapped controls penalty. When pressing multiple keys at once, it seems the game sometimes misses the release of a button, and you keep moving in the direction anyway. I also found the stats a bit repetitive, which was disappointing considering the plethora of unique enemies. In particular, I found myself naturally drawn to the 'swapped controls' penalty, because getting it twice in a row cancels out the effect. I also found the lack of music a bit dry, and whilst there is an ambient whisper sound, this doesn't fill the game's need for a good musical number.

I also see little connection with the theme of sacrifice. The opening cutscene seems to force the theme in with some random backstory, but ultimately, this would be the exact same game even without the 'sacrifice' elements. I didn't actively view the stat changes as sacrifices, but rather as progression. I think that where it differs is in the player's control. To make a sacrifice, I believe that the player must actively decide to lose something that they value, and the stats didn't feel that way.

Another problem I had early in the gameplay was that I was spam clicking left-click, so when the stat menu came up, I instantly selected one without even realising that stats had changed. This further fuelled my confusion when I got a swap controls penalty, and I assumed that the controls were broken.

Overall, you have a very unique visual style that I love about your works! I am a bit disappointed by the lack of innovation, but never-the-less, it is a fun experience for a bit. Your opening cut scene teases numerous awesome looking abilities, including flight and magic, but I don't feel that the gameplay actually provides this in any way. A few minor fixes and this game could be improved, but I feel that the game is ultimately limited by a lack of innovation into any new mechanics.

vlad-dae 2018-12-04 11:06

Wow! It'a so hard( Graphics by Noa are gorgeous, us always. Love him))

sanyingli 2018-12-04 11:14

Overall it's very nice game, I really love the art works, definitely 5 star. The sounds are cool and kind of strange. one little thing could be improved: Sometimes when I killed a boss(not sure if it is a boss). Same sacrifice choice would pop out(like two: +fire rate, -view).

craftlord 2018-12-04 12:45

Very fun game. Great graphics and audio. I'm not used to play games with wasd so I found it very difficult.

noa-calice 2018-12-04 12:54

Thanks for the feedback @craftlord ! You can also use the arrow keys :) !

fre 2018-12-04 13:05

Way to set a high bar!

I love the attention to detail and production value, especially the creepy walking sound effect :D. The trade-offs are nice, at some point I traded swapped controls for what seemed like bigger projectiles twice, resulting in nicely overpowered shots :).

One way to put more emphasis on the theme of sacrifice might be to offer 2 or 3 of the trade-offs as part of the initial storyline, so you can experience the gameplay variations even when you're not that great at dodging projectiles.

I really liked this overall, well done!

rk3omega 2018-12-04 13:47

Nice game. The movement is very fluid and pleasant, and the art is great. Some music would've really helped this a lot. Bit surprised that it just turned out to be a simple top-down shooter considering that there were two of you. It just feels like a simple game that one person could've made in a day.

gerardb 2018-12-04 14:43

Great controls and even better aesthetic. And although the game is fun and has a good relation with the theme I feel like I've played this many times.

But hey, this is a freaking good entry. Congrats to you both :)

camille 2018-12-04 15:42

Really liked it! Graphics and sound design are really great. I like your style. About the mechanics they answer well the theme "sacrifices must be made". Good job!

denifia 2018-12-04 19:18

This one made me smile. I like how you interpreted the theme but the game play didn't seem to match the story - but not sure how I'd do it either  Movement felt fluid and quick and the upgrades/downgrades were interesting. One time I only had three "reverse movement, +hp" upgrades. All in all a good game!

takayamushi 2018-12-04 23:25

Pretty good! Nice job guys!

thomas-bringer 2018-12-05 17:49

I really enjoyed playing this game! You artstyle looks cool, as always, and the sfx are nice (: I love the different kind of sacrifices we can make, like swapped controls. Just a little issue, sometimes I get the same option twice or even three times. But anyway, it was fun, congrats! :D

thomas-bringer 2018-12-05 17:50

(Also, I wanted to thank you @noa-calice because you helped me a lot in my "game creation journey" (as you say). I took part in my 1st Ludum Dare partly thanks to your videos. Therefore I'd be honored if you could play my game. I hope I don't sound rude, I just want to give back a little from what you've given to me. If you don't have time or don't want to, feel free to ignore this comment)

mrpiedpiper 2018-12-06 07:11

This was genuine fun. A great arcade top-down shooter! My personal favorite bit was getting "Reverse movement" twice. Hehehe. And moving with reverse controls is actually kinda fun XP

sadzanenyama 2018-12-06 12:00

Another cool game in your signature are style. Well done!

sthor726 2018-12-06 15:22

Nice Game! overall the game worked well and looked good. A soundtrack would've made this awesome

glassar 2018-12-06 16:02

Great graphics as always and the sound design was also great. Some music would have been nice and the game felt a bit to easy if you took reversed controls twice which ment you got huge attacks and normal controls meaning that I almost never saw any enemies.

merpader 2018-12-06 17:10

tons of fun and really liked the gameplay! Though it felt pretty empty without some music it really felt and played well!

royur 2018-12-06 18:34

dunno if its just me or the controller seems buggy? overall good executed game, well polished, good art. Wish i have 3 second invulnerability after getting hit. fan of your youtube channel, keep it up.

alina-burgert 2018-12-06 18:41

Nice game, like the intro and the graphics. But sometimes I had problems with moving upwards.

fuchsi 2018-12-06 18:45

some kind of score would have been nice to see whether you are improving over time and getting the same option three times feels kind of unfair.... but i love the graphics ;)

frostbyte4k 2018-12-06 18:48

@dk5000p I had no problems with my game in the browser even though it uses both arrow keys and left click. Though it did have problems with UI I don't think webGls at fault for the controls being a bit buggy at times.

radow 2018-12-06 19:12

battle.png Originially I though this Binding-Of-Isaac-esque title was really on the tougher side, but this was mainly due to my foolish dismissal of ever taking "swap move controlls" this imba sacrifice cancels itself every other time, gives you insane life and sometimes increases your projectile size (it doesnt tell you the later, but...). There is a weird things that happens after ~200 kills thought: performence drops and the sound warps. Maybe there are audiosources spawned and not deleted? (Unity doesnt like handling more than 100 at at time). Needless to say: I had fun.

frostbyte4k 2018-12-06 19:14

I have to admit I'm kind of disappointed with this one I feel like this was the type of game you wanted to avoid. As it feels very similar to games you've made in the past, and the cards with the sacrifices have been done by at least four other games. However, I do believe you executed it better by giving the player rewards as well as sacrifices to make, but I think that the sacrifices just aren't that interesting or fun and the inverting of the controls just makes a hard game impossible for me. The art and animations are still amazing as ever, the sound effects are fine, but the lack of music just highlighted the problems. There was also a bug when my character gets stuck moving in one direction. Over all the game is good but with two youtubers, one working at unity I was expecting something more.

brownricestudio 2018-12-06 19:17

Great game!

kaeveris 2018-12-06 20:13

I really like how sacrificying is introduced in this game. I love sounds even little ones like shooting or walking, so adorable. Graphics are great!

eldogg 2018-12-06 21:23

The intro was really well put together and creepy.

I like the reverb on the sound effects.

hugo-kieffer 2018-12-06 21:35

really cool visual and soud effect, i like the game but like some other say the default screen size is a bit too big, and for us laptop users, we can’t see the full thing but apart from that its a great entry

pxlucasf 2018-12-06 22:20

The art is really impressive! I just miss a background music.

sadsmile 2018-12-06 23:08

Great art! Sadly a bit generic besides that but a good entry nontheless :)

niborious 2018-12-06 23:38

Nice work guys! Unfortunately I ran into a lot of bugs I chose fire rate three times in my first run through, but it looked like it affected bullet speed and not actual fire rate. There was also a time I chose a +hp upgrade but my hp didn't change. I also died during the level up menu opening which didn't feel great. I also have no idea what triggers my projectiles to increase in size Really interesting concept, and the art is amazing as always

lilou-cormic 2018-12-07 03:22

Visuals are great as well as enemy diversity. Background music would be something to add though. Great job overall!

random-wizard 2018-12-07 09:22

Nice game missing some music though

sickdot 2018-12-07 20:35

This is pretty good! Considering that you made 2 games blackthornprod :)

adam-b 2018-12-08 15:10

Great graphics and sound effects! I think I would have preferred if shooting was controlled by the arrow keys though.

drikdrok 2018-12-08 17:13

Nice game. I found the movement to be a bit buggy, in a way I can't quite describe.

But the graphpics are very good, which leaves a good impression. Overall fun game!

zanagi 2018-12-09 05:37

Cool game, with nice visual and sfx. Great job

matank 2018-12-09 09:03

Wow, 2 entries in a single jam? :)

Game was very fun. I managed to get to level 8 and I think there's no boss on that level because I kept running around avoiding the two shadow monsters for quite a while until I was eventually killed.

I did "cheat" though because I encountered something which I think was a bug - at the end of one of the levels, I chose the sacrifice "+hp reverse movement" and for some reason it made my firing bullets much larger, making the game considerably easier. Also, the reverse movement I got actually reversed a reversed movement I got in a previous level (not sure if that was intended).

One other thing - only on my third replay I realized that the "- view" sacrifice actually zooms in on the character. The first two attempts I thought it did nothing. Maybe I'm less observational than average, but I think it would have been clearer if either: 1. instead of zooming in you would just make the play space smaller or 2. there would be some animation that makes it very clear the camera is zooming in

Anyway, cool game, had a lot of fun, love the particle effects the animations and the enemy designs.

The image say all...

skill347 2018-12-09 15:55

Nice game guys! Also I know ur popular so maybe u could rate my game? I have only 7 votes and I need 20? Plz

okuar 2018-12-09 17:52

Wubba lubba dub dub!

masterkrepta 2018-12-10 00:34

Amazing Visuals as always. I enjoyed the enemy variety. The only card I hated was the flip movement controls. I died almost every time with that one.

tosunami 2018-12-12 11:52

Cool game! Nice graphics, though a bg music could be nice. A little hard to play but if that's the plan, it's all right!

generictoast 2018-12-13 06:37

Great looking art and cool sound effects. I encountered a bug where i sometimes got stuck to the sides of the play area. Was hoping there would be unique enemies who did different attacks instead of just walking towards the player. Still a great entry!

purpledartfrog 2018-12-13 17:26

Just reviewed  Nice game - although the controls froze on me - causing me not to be able to move in a specific direction

rkuhl 2018-12-15 23:10

Movement felt a little bit clunky, nothing happened after level 8, and no music. I love the artwork, but otherwise it felt a little uninspired. Also, you could still play in slow motion during the upgrade screen.

coatline 2018-12-20 16:08

Great art as always and the audio fit the art style I thought. I wish that there was more negative and positive choices. Fun gameplay. Good entry!

kromzem 2018-12-20 18:43

I saw this Entry on YT and had to play it by myself immediately! It feels and looks great. Great job. Love it.

ethan-kennerly 2018-12-24 22:40

When I shot the dark blobs leaving smoky trails, I felt thrilled! If you continue to develop this, I wasn't sure how to improve my skill other than to shoot and dodge more efficiently.
