Also on my third LD. Good job, good graphics and great audio. I found the game a bit difficult. Maybe is just me. :D

I really liked the style! reminded me a lot of the arcade games. good job on making it in 48 hours!
This made me happy. I think you are a little stingy on the "special attack" allowances, seeing as the attack is just a kick!
The music and graphics are perfect for a 90s beat 'em up. I wish it were slightly faster and that I could jump, and also that someone would come up out of a manhole and throw the manhole cover at me. That's requisite for the genre.
Great work!
This was a great entry. Well done! Feedback: I wish that I had three attack buttons, and that the whole game moved more quickly. One quick attack, one slow, and one special. As is, I didn't even realize I was using my special until they were all gone. I also wish the special were a little more exciting. The whole screen explodes, or something. That I way I know something serious just happened. And it's just more epic. Overall good though!
Really like the graphics and specially the animations. Really smooth :) Congrats
Great animations! And the UI looks good too! ^^ Controls are a little bit clunky
Awesome, I enjoyed atmosphere of the old arcade games. Reminds me great times with Golden Axe :D Thanks, really cool entry!
The music was excellent! Also good job on the character art and animation, the backgrounds look a bit too clean though. The gameplay works, with a bit more visual 'juice' it'd feel better though!
I like the retro graphics, music, and enjoyed the voice acting. However the crisp voice pushed against the retro style. I'd put some some sort of filter or sample reducer on it to better capture the retro feel. There is a term in game design called juice or game feel which refers to visual and audio feedback. Some examples include things like camera shake, knock back, and juicy sound effects. emphasize every action with some sort of feedback whether that be through visuals, audio, or through physics. In doing so will greatly improve your game. Over all though it's still fun and challenging game. Good job :)
Fun game, and very reminiscent of Double Dragon, in a good way. I found it pretty hard, too. My only complaint would be that sometimes my attacks would hit, and sometimes they wouldn't, even when standing in the same place, which made it difficult to know what to do. The music track is awesome, and I liked the graphics and sound a lot. The sacrifice theme is there in the story, but not much in the game.
Good job! Really nice visuals and music. I found it a bit too hard, restarting the game from the beginning after each death is a bit frustrating.
Very nice entry!!! I really like the animations, audio track and voice acting. Congratis!
Hey @mrspeaker, @wdelvi, @frostbyte4k and @shp, i really wanted to put some effects not only on the special attack but also in the normal ones to make the game more interesting, but the timeframe didnt allow me. It falls on what @wdelvi says, it doesnt look like a special attack at all. It also falls in @frostbyte4k opinion, it lacks juice. I used the prototype backgrounds (without any effects and rather plain) because the submit time was ending.
About @fat-cat and @dob complains, it seems to be my decision that the attacks only hit if the enemy is not already hit, falling or rising. It was a decision to prevent mashing the enemy till it is down and allow it to revide the punches, which was probably not the best decision. I'll have that in mind in the future.
Also, thanks @meskaline, @gamers-blood-entertainment, @cowa, @jiri-hysek, @marc-garcia-penche, @jungle and the others previously mentioned for the kind words and time reviewing my game. I'll be sure to check every single one of your games and review them as well.
Nice game! I found it quite difficult but I guess I'm not very good at that genre xD Very cool graphics and sounds, well done!
Good job! I struggled with figuring out how to land my punches. But the visuals were amazing!
Amazing! It reminds me about some classic beat 'em up games from NES and SNES:)
Good job! But I could not identify the theme in the game.
Nice little game ! I couldn't get passed stage 2. I had some issues with the attack colliders, very often hitting into thin air, and getting my ass handed to me by the AIs I thought I was hitting.
Otherwise, graphics are simple and effective. I like the retro style. I really liked the audio ! Just the kind of music I can hear when booting my NES. And I love the metal style !
I also feel like the special is a bit useless. I wasted all of them not being able to hit the enemies, and I find it unfortunate that they do not regenerate over time.
Overall, I had fun playing the game, but eventually gets killed by not being able to hit the enemies.
I liked the character art-style a lot, I would've liked if the moving speed was a bit higher. Also it was quite hard to hit the enemies some time. (That's just probably cause I'm bad) But overall I enjoyed playing it, and the voice acting thing in the start was cool. Nice game :^D
Moves are a little tricky, and it's sometimes hard to find the good place and moment for the hitboxes, but as the ennemies have the same problem it seems fair to me. ;) I almost didn't use the special, because I didn't understand what are the conditions to use it - the times it worked was totally by chance. I liked playing it however, and the character design and the music gives a certain mood. Good job!
Wow cool game! And Death Wish! Great theme, and movie!
You made all of this alone in this short time frame? Holy crap, you must have sacrificed your sleep and health.
Nice retro feel to it and very nice music and art. Some few bugs but nothing that bothered me (killing everybody = green arrow to continue. But one of the bad guys the arise, but can't punch him and he can't hurt me) I also miss a jump-button, it's classic!
Solid entry, congrats! (even if I couldn't get past lvl 2 :sob:)
Hey @brklipel, the theme is in the story, considering that each cultist kill is a sacrifice as they sacrificed others before. I guess you skipped right into the action but i cant blame you for skipping my narration.
About the @kaleido, @fluffy-kaeloky, @raffe and @lereveur difficulty to land punches it was a decision i took that the attacks would only hit the enemies (and the player) if it is not already hit, falling or rising, in order to prevent button mashing and allow the hitted to revide the attacks. Now i see it was not the best decision for the moment, for which i apologize after seeing many people complain about it. As it changes in a core mechanic of the game, i will not modify it in order to not broke the jam rules.
I saw a couple of my friends also having this bug that you related @rolle. I will try to correct that, but as i took some days off to participate on the ludum dare and now i am back to work i dont know when i'll have time to do so.
Also thanks for @andrea, @erendelous, and all the others kind words, and the time you took not only playing this game, but also writting it's review. I did the same for every single one that commented here hoping i can contribute with anything.
Solid overall feel here, and who doesn't love the death wish franchise, the big question here, is it Bronson or Willis?
@sawtan - Bronson, always Bronson.
Good game until I got gang raped by bunch of guys with knifes lmao. I love those chiptune soundtracks and the most mind boggling thing is that you did all that in combo?! good job! The only thing that left me cold is the theme, I got it after reading few comments. Really liked the game tho!
Fun graphics, made me think of Final Fight. I really liked the way the knife guys looked, but in practice, screw those guys!
Thanks for the fun game.
Good arcade game! It could be a little smoother between moving and hitting (you know, music tells us to go fast, but it feels like we are somehow too slow...). Beautiful visuals and animations. Great job!
Nicely done game, the art looks fantastic, great audio, and the story makes sense. I really love these types of games :-)
The combat did however feel unresponsive, not always hitting even though I was right up their face. I did read what you wrote above and I understand the decision, but it just feels weird and unresponsive :-)
The overall game however is fantastic!
Neat Game, The audio is quite well made and the graphics also seems fitting. Sometimes hits wouldn't land which I tought should land. But overall a good game!
Great entry!
Having trouble landing hits sometime, feels like we're probably each on different sites of an integer boundary and some math is going wrong - moving a little distance up or down or right or left usually resolves it. They definitely weren't hit recently, I'd run up to them in my usual pattern, attack, and sometimes the hit just would not land.
When fighting the final boss, one red cultist just stood there, not sure if he was dead and not drawing right, or confused, or just having a drink of Cola.
I'm really impressed by the amount and quality of content, great job!
Everything I have to say has already been said, even the fact that I can't get passed level 2 ^^
Great job :)
I liked the arcade style ! However I had no sounds
@mrgrimace which browser did you use? I tested it on Chrome, Firefox and Edge and it should run fine. Can you also send me the console log of the browser tab so i can check what was wrong?
I was on vivaldi, here is my console :
server.cpmstar.com/cached/zonefiles/7_16_newgroundsdesktop.js?rnd=504469:1 Failed to load resource: net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT 6A parser-blocking, cross site (i.e. different eTLD+1) script,
I never used Vivaldi Browser but i gave it a try and Death Wish runs fine on version 2.1.1337.51 (64bits), with sounds and everything. Officialy, Unity doesnt support it, but as Vivaldi has Webgl support, it should run fine. There is however a couple of things that can have bugged your sound:
Check the settings in Tabs -> Tab Muting (if an option of muting tabs is selected) Keyboard -> Tab (if some keyboard shortcut is set to mute tabs. If it is, try to set a shorcut to unmute all tabs. Maybe you pressed the shortcut but didnt mean it).
If it still isnt working, do you have installed any extensions on the browser that could affect this kind of function? If not, the last thing i found about was this guy with a audio codec issue: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/5965/solved-html5-sound-not-working/5
Another way is to play it on another browser (if you use windows, edge is always there lurking around menacing).
I really hope this can help you play not only this game, but any other that uses Unity engine in your favorite browser, but this is what i can give for support right now.
Classic beat 'em up style, I like it. :)
The controls are maybe a biiiiiiit to slow/unresponsive for an action-based genre like this though. I'd have preferred the animations to be a bit more snappy, so I could attack/move faster.
@mrgrimace , did something help at all?
Cool graphics! The game gets boring pretty quickly but it is very fun to play for a while!
Charles Bronson was a real badass. Good game - without any bullshit, just killing the bad guys. Repetitive, but it's ok for short games.
Visuals were really nice, pretty good entry!
Awesome graphics and animations. I found the hitboxes a bit difficult to figure out but honestly that is an issue I have in literally all beat-em-up games:)
pretty good entry -- love the beat em up theme -- although not sure what i was sacrificing? maybe the chicken? -- thanks for making this
Awesome game! Had a lot of fun playing this, reminded me of old games I really liked like golden axe and double dragon. I f-ed up by not saving enough special attacks for the final boss. I managed to kill all of his goons but eventually he killed me after I only took down 75% of his health. I need a break now, but I'll try again later :)
The chiptune metal tracks are great! I also love the colors you used for the cultists! This is a really cool game. I agree with @exewin, a little repetitive, but it's hard to expand on an idea in such a small amount of time! So, I can't really say that's a complaint. Love the game!
Took me straight back to Golden Axe days with my little bro. Epic music and graphics. Really solid entry. Kudos
Animations were good and it was fun to play, music matched the mood. My only problem is the theme, it feels its just thrown into the story and has no connection to the game mechanics. Other wise good entry.
Was a nice blast to the past. The narration was also stupidly funny. I died by not saving up my special attacks for the boss :( also, the food was too overpowered and fully healed you, which I feel like was too much.
All in all, nice job.
Great job making this! Some of it looked a bit silly, particularly that the enemies continued attacking whilst you were down or dead. The AI also seemed to lack complexity, with all of them bunching together into a manageable group. Try adding simple conditions to the AI to make it more interesting. Maybe each of the AI could have a target offset from the player. Rather than walking directly to the player, they aim to walk to the left, right above or below the player. They could also take slightly randomised paths? These things aren't too hard to program, particularly in unity, but can add extra depth to the AI.
I felt a bit locked in place whilst attacking. Could have maybe given the player the ability to cancel an attack or dodge an incoming attack? As it was, there wasn't really any way to avoid attacks, which made the gameplay feel a bit limited. Could have maybe had some extra enemy attacks, like maybe the knife dude could throw it, then become an ordinary melee enemy. This would further require a dodge control to avoid these projectiles, maybe like a quick-time event?
The arena felt unnecessarily big, and made the background feel very repetitive. If the game zoomed in a bit more, I probably wouldn't notice the repetitive background, because then the focus would have been on the fight rather than the large, monotonous set.
The audio was very nice, and the narration was gold. Animations were so crisp, and the style was brilliant. Theme felt forced in there and really, the 'sacrifice' element in the story could have been removed without changing the game. The game should rely on the theme as a core gameplay element. Hope this feedback helps with future projects. Keep developing
Man your game sounds awesome! Between the voice overs and the metal soundtrack, there nothing to criticize, full marks! Did you time the player's step length and the beat of the music or was that coincidence? If you did it on purpose, great job, that's a nice touch.
The graphics are well done, especially the animation. That must have been a lot of work! I love the blood animation. It's pretty over the top but fits the tone of the game well. there was great variety in the enemies for a game made in 48 hours. You recycled your assets well and did not stretch out the game unnecessarily.
All in all, the game was really fun and I made it to the boss, but was not able to beat it, unfortunately.
I do have a couple of remarks:
- I wish the hit animation would have been a bit faster, as that would have made the game a bit more responsive and controllable, it felt a bit laggy - Having an very short invincibility time out after being hit would help the game a lot. The way it is, if I get hit two times, then I get double the damage. I understand that it was probably so that fighting multiple enemies would become tougher, but I think the same could have been achieved by having them attack out of sync, so that the probability of being hit increases instead of the damage you get - The chicken drops were great, but the rng was a bit off. During one playthrough I drowned in chicken and was able to get to the boss, then the next attempt gave me a single one and I died during the first level. If I recall, most fighting games give you powerups at predefined places, either lying around or being dropped by specific enemies. That makes tuning the game easier and gives the player some more predictability. - It would have been cool to allow picking up enemy weapons but I understand that this would have taken a huge amount of work in the animation department. - The theme was a bit tacked on, but the game stands well on its own.
Overall a fun game that could have used a little bit of polish, but is a solid entry as it stands.
Hey @mrspeaker, @shp, @dob, @marc-garcia-penche, @jungle, @andrea, @fluffy-kaeloky, @rolle, @tulipekoni, @jiri-one, @subtlydramatic, @arron-fowler you guys wrote some nice reviews regarding the soundtrack, so i felt motivated to publish them as whole full songs, which you can check (if you want) at:
https://soundcloud.com/derek-volker-413758721/sets/death-wish-soundtrack
@coleslaughter thanks for the comment, ill try to work on better mechanics next time
@paulhocker it is actually story related, the cultist sacrificed the protagonist loved ones, so now he will sacrifice them all. Also, as @digitaldude555 said i know it is not the best interpretation of the theme (probably one of the worst), but i wanted to deliver something fun to play and couldnt work with the 'loss something to proceed' mechanic i saw in many games on this jam.
@aurel come on, its a whole chicken! Tasty!
@aurel thanks for the tips. Dodging, more attack variety (both for the protagonist and the different enemies) were on the todolist, but the timeframe made me give up on them in order to deliver a fully playable game. The background is the first prototype, when i was about to work on a better background there was only one hour left, so it became the official in order to finish the game within the compo time. Anyway, i really appreciatte your review.
@cerno-b there is no timing in the player step and the beat, i guess it is just a happy coincidence. The whole combat mechanic should be reviewed to be a better game in my opinion now that i got many opinions on it. It was my decision to made it like it is in order to not be a full button mash till i win, but it doesnt really seem the best option now. The chicken drops are random indeed, and i guess really making dropped by specific enemies would be best.
Also @sawtan, @jfraser314, @rolly, @jesper-k, @jimbly, @vivien-fargette, @jens-steenmetz, @exewin, @busy-games, @josh-bothun, @matank thanks for your time playing and reviewing Death Wish.
Artstyle is nice. Animation was smooth, but I seem to miss some punches that should connect. Over the metal music fits the game nicely. Reminds me of good ol' quake. Theme was somewhat missing, as I wasn't sacrificing much as a player. Overall a nice and solid game though.
Cool beat em up style game! The gameplay was fun and I like that you can dodge hits. Not sure if it is neccessary to have a button for picking up items, probably you could just have it so you pick up the items when you walk over them.
Also it would have been really cool if you could combine movement with fighting so you can do kicks to knock out multiple enemies simultaneously.
The theme here could have been used in other ways in the gameplay itself though. Great job overall!
Neat game! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/piFMgX8tbrA
