Best canine dungeon crawler I've played all week :)

I really like the mechanic of non-tile-based movement where the world only updates when you move - never seen that one explored before - interested to see where you go with it.

unicornpooping 2012-04-23 20:17

Science cheese! Great graphics, love the random gameplay. Good job.

jeffreybiles 2012-04-23 20:20

Agree with Luke about the mechanic of the world updating only when you move. That, and "Science cheese", were the best parts of the game.

With that said, I'm not sure what the stuff-collecting was for. I filled up quickly, then never did anything with it.

darien 2012-04-23 20:22

Good stuff, though I notice the world updates for several frames following a bark -- this can be a bit tricky to get used to.

dakowta 2012-04-23 20:29

Love the audio make me wish I could use milky tracker properly.

Graphics and game design are awesome too.

skelethulu 2012-04-24 03:30

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I think my real takeaway from this project is that the whole "world moves with you" thing from roguelikes is severely underexplored. I had a point where enemies were firing way too frequently once and the level looked like a top-down bullet-hell dungeon crawler. That was super interesting, because it took the part I hate about bullet-hell shooters out (EXTREME RESPONSIVENESS) but kept the part I love (DANCING). I'm not kidding when I say I want to make a Contra game that handles like this.

rustymoyher 2012-04-24 08:05

Nice art! Great entrance with the space cheese. Love the barking. :)
Runs smooth too. This should make a good iOS game.

tequibo 2012-04-24 11:19

Liked graphics, hats, science cheese, the "everything moves only when you do" mechanics, but, for some reason, did not noticed it instantly. Though it is not obvious, if there is a win condition and what is the point of this all.

kutuup1989 2012-04-24 16:19

If I learned one thing from this game it this: If someone ever offers me "science cheese" I'd be better off declining :P Nice work!

smvilar 2012-04-24 20:42

Nice art! I didn't understand fully what was going on. I think there might be some pretty nasty bugs!

whitetigle 2012-04-24 20:52

I liked the game, and the "world moves with you" concept which I I have also kind of used in my game.
The gfx were great and the story funny. Bravo :)

darkfrost 2012-04-25 01:23

Awesome! By the time I got to level 3 though, the game really lagged out, to the point where it was using 97% cpu, and was running at about 5fps :( Not sure why, maybe it's not disposing entities properly when they're offscreen / between levels? Was good fun though, although I was kinda confused at times, with chests appear out of nowhere o_O But it was good fun, nice idea, nice execution! :D

kevinworkman 2012-04-25 02:05

This game is adorable, worked great, and made me laugh. Plus you get an extra point or two for leaving my favorite comment ever on my game, haha.

Did you know that there is an actual comic book character named Science Dog? http://www.comicvine.com/science-dog/29-42574/

skelethulu 2012-04-25 02:17

I found that out post-compo. Oh well, this is Action Science Dog, something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

envy3d 2012-04-25 05:16

It's funny, pretty, and good. I couldn't find my way out of the sixth level but it was fun trying!

cakencode 2012-04-25 05:30

It was prety enjoyable. The graphics in the scientist's room is nice, and the sound is great too. The warping part with the cheese was funny but soon got really tiring for me. (I think it was the flashing lights.) Overall, it's a pretty neat game.

stevecochrane 2012-04-25 06:50

My favorite so far! Love the concept, visuals, music, humor, all of it.

cherrynukacola 2012-04-25 07:39

Love roguelikes and the movement base was fun. I felt a little lost though, as I couldn't figure out a way to move to the next 'dungeon' floor or open my inventory (I'm one of those players that need instructions for everything ^_^). I do hope that you'll keep working on it as it has so much super potential! Cheers!

Oreganik 2012-04-25 15:42

Yep, good stuff! The update-when-moving thing in a free-move game is surprisingly compelling, one of those "how come I haven't seen it before?" sort of realizations.

blob 2012-04-25 21:05

Very interesting time concept. Love the randomness.
Is there any collars or other items than hats to find ?
Also going down didnt seem to change anything rather than just recreate a similar level.
Very good game base, but not much to do yet.

buffalophil 2012-04-26 22:14

Awesome look and humor! Woof!

My game seemed to stop at the Subatomic World 3 screen. Aside from that this was pretty enjoyable! I like the concept and I found 'Science Cheese' to be hilarious. Gameplay could still use a bit of work but was overall pretty well done for the time limit.

skelethulu 2012-04-27 12:18

I have found one lockup that can occur; while creating dungeon floors it will try and place the exit a certain number of steps from the entrance; this distance is based on the size of the floor being generated, but sometimes an exit cannot "fit" depending on how the entrance was placed. Fix going up soon, as well as an update including more equipment, levelling up hero and enemies, better AI, and an ending. Probably have it all packaged up by Monday, time willing.

whilefun 2012-04-28 18:17

i like the graphical and audio styling a lot. I could not figure out how to unload my items from the other world though. Barking as the main mechanism was neat

andrew-2 2012-05-01 00:30

Bonus points for epic use of cheese!

castor 2012-05-08 18:46

Very good game. It's wild. Lovely audio and visuals.

jimmypaulin 2012-05-08 19:07

Love the procedural levels, the tiles are great, the dog is great, but I was pretty confused about what to do! All those items didn't seem to have a use and I couldn't find any way out of the level, but I see from your comments I just didn't look hard enough ;) All in all a fun experience that has scope to go plenty further

azurenimbus 2012-05-09 23:28

Really nice, I fell in love with my character : )

azurenimbus 2012-05-09 23:29

Oh I forgot to say that sometimes if I stopped moving everything would stop moving too. Wasn't sure if that was intentional, but it made things easier.

character 2012-05-10 03:28

Pretty fun game. I really like the roguelike world movement and the random levels. Would have rated it higher if it had a little more content. Not that I'm one to talk, my game had one enemy type, but yeah. Good luck on the iOs port =)

make-a-game 2012-05-12 00:03

I got to Sub level 5 and the game became unplayable with due to a framerate issue. I also had a an invisible exit in two levels, barking didn't make them appear, I stumbled onto them while exploring. I wish there was more content, there's a fun premise here.

ehtd 2012-05-12 19:04

Good job. Liked the dog and the graphics :)

jfroco 2012-05-12 21:32

Nice gfx, nice music, very original... great entry. Congrats.

machinas 2012-05-12 22:06

sounds like you nailed your goals. i couldn't figure out how to open that inventory screen. would be great to have instructions on that. do i need to bark at something? This was fun, audio was good, graphics are fun. game is silly, the movement rules are strange / innovative / relaxing. nice job

davidpeter 2012-05-13 15:56

Can't believe I haven't played this earlier, considering you were my first commenter. Dog dungeon explorer. Yes.

benw 2012-05-14 00:02

SCIENCE CHEESE!
