Wow! The best LD23 I've played so far! Loved the graphics and the story, and the gameplay was simple yet fun. My only complaint is that it seemed a little too easy.
Agree with Luke about the mechanic of the world updating only when you move. That, and "Science cheese", were the best parts of the game.
With that said, I'm not sure what the stuff-collecting was for. I filled up quickly, then never did anything with it.
Pretty good. I loved the music. Unfortunately, there was little strategy in the gameplay, nor a real sense of progression.
Thanks!
Interesting idea on changing the rotation. If I build on this game I'll definitely take that into consideration.
Sadly, at this point I *can't* make better graphics or digital music. However, I plan on getting those into my toolkit before the next LD, and your comment will help motivate me to do it sooner ^_^
Cosmologicon, that's a good idea. I do have them speed up a bit per level but, as you mention, it's not enough.
I'm flattered that you think there's AI ;)
A simple fix might be to make CPU-on-CPU collisions less effective, so the level of chaos is preserved while it is less fatal to your enemies. I'm open to other suggestions.
@transmit, Thanks! That made me really happy.
@kevin, thanks for the suggestions. Playing up the atomic part of it would be really interesting. There would definitely be some difficulty and gameplay tweaks to keep it fun, but it's something worth looking into. Fun fact: this game started out using real electrodynamics, but it turns out that's way too computationally intensive for javascript.
On the graphics and sound count, all I can say is "give me 4 months" XD
As far as crashing goes, I can help the problem (in 3 weeks) by finding other ways of increasing difficulty than just a simple speed boost and more atoms. If you want to get farther right now, I would recommend using chrome, as it has a much more efficient javascript interpreter.
Thanks everyone for the kind words :) I'll do my best to make worthy graphics on the next one. I'm doing my first game with sprites this week! Viva la progress!
@Darien: Holy crap! I played the shit out of those games, and monkey fight was probably a huge subconscious inspiration.
Everyone who had sound/performance problems: my bad. I'm going to use an engine next time so that I can take advantage of their sound loading and performance optimizations. Who knew browsers were bad at trig?
@andrew, that's a brilliant idea. Man, this is why communities are great.
There's not a whole lot to add to the above comments. To summarize: 1) Sweet concept! 2) It gets really hard really quick 3) I rarely know what's going on.
I did like the mechanic where the antibodies only move when you're attacking. If the controls had been a little better, that could have led to some awesome moments.
Super impressed that you made an MMO in 48 hours! Is it fun/playable? No and kind of. Still, if you gave it some more time (and made the screen bigger, I was all "why are there numbers, oh that dot is an enemy") it might turn into something good.
Very nice! The background art is beautiful, but blurred enough to not be distracting. It was occasionally frustrating when a flower would pop up, open, and promptly close again right from under my sprite. I like that it happened, it just seemed to happen a bit much.
But as I said, overall very good.
First, a response to your comment: I loved monkey fight growing up. That probably was a huge subconscious influence.
Now, to your game.
My favorite part is the music. Yes, I know it's a 10-second loop that has literally 5 notes, but it still sets the mood perfectly. The donut sound was a little delayed though (people complained about this on my game as well, so if you find a cure let me know).
The gameplay was fun for a bit, but it was slow/simple/predictable enough that I didn't feel the need to play a third time. The first time through I tried to eat a comet.
And I second Tom7string's comment about the size of the world... very frustrating!
I like this. One minor gripe: for some reason it took me a while to figure out that the new direction mappings were shown at the bottom. Could be a UI thing, or could just be me.
