LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Burgeoning by uthamon 2015-12-17T01:06:00

Well, I'm afraid I can't play this game. Avast! freaks out every time I try to download it, so I tried disabling the shields temporarily. Then I re-enabled the shields and tried running the game and Avast! continued to set off alarms. I don't know why Avast! considers this game to be a viral threat, but I think you should look into this.

Archangel by BeamKirby 2015-12-15T23:40:00

Thanks! Also, because of your comment, I added a .zip download to the game's page.

Archangel by BeamKirby 2015-12-17T04:25:00

Huh. No, the death sound is not taken from Mega Man, but it does kinda sound like it! All of the sounds were generated with sfxr. Anyway, thanks for the comments so far.

LD39 — Running out of Power

POWER by xk_the_name 2017-08-05T02:29:22Z

Well this was a fun game! It was also a great length for a game made in such a short time frame.

I do have to point out that in one level (I believe it was level 11), while I was travelling between a bunch of huge asteroids, I think I picked up a power bolt, causing the power explosion bullets to fly out, and one bullet got stuck between asteroids or something, because a few hundred thousand particles started spawning all over the place and the game lagged horribly. Luckily, I died and could restart the level. :P

Also, at the time I'm writing this, why does your Game Jolt page say this was uploaded 14 hours ago?

Click The Power by hungare 2017-08-13T21:29:02Z

I have to agree with everyone else thinking that the game should go on indefinitely. Games like these just naturally go on forever.

LAMBDA-DASH by Flatgub 2017-08-13T20:47:54Z

Interesting concept. Great graphics. Relaxing music. Absurd difficulty. I'm probably just really bad at this game, but I did not have much fun playing this. I had way too much difficulty even getting to the beacon. The ship is just way too difficult to control.

My Kingdom for a Rabbit! by incobalt 2017-08-03T03:30:53Z

I did it! I picked the best heir to the throne! All it took was me realizing how the game is done, taking out an index card and starting to draw boxes with names, deciding that would take too long, pulling up notepad to achieve the same idea, deciding that was non-intuitive, and finally pulling up a spreadsheet and arranging the names and tests into a grid to allow me to pick the best heir! Seriously, you are the first person to make me pull up a spreadsheet to play a game.

I really liked this game, it's just like a big riddle. The graphics were nice, but I couldn't hear the audio. I read a few comments and found out that the audio is definitely there, I'm just too afraid to pull up my volume that high. It would've been nice to see a graphic of the rabbits working on their tests, as well. I also didn't see how the theme fit into the game until I read the theme again in the credits. Yup, the queen is definitely running out of power.

Overall, it's a lovely game!

Audio Hook (formerly Hook, Beat, & Keeper) by mrjoshuamclean 2017-08-03T02:58:46Z

Interesting game. It could definitely go somewhere if you work on it some more. Although, I actually had to play this game twice because the first time I somehow skipped the second level when I died on it. I don't know how, but it happened. :P

I think that the goal of adding more layers to a song by collecting enough objects is a cool concept, but because you're using songs with a strong beat, the gameplay seems off to me. I think that perhaps a simple, quiet beat should always be playing regardless of how many cubes you have and your hooks can only be fired to the beat of the music. It just feels weird to be playing a music-based game that's not a rhythm-based game.

Don't Let the Light Go Out by BeamKirby 2017-08-01T21:58:50Z

@connor-hagan Yeah, I realized how annoying it is to die with only the shooter enemies left, so I just released a patch that makes the game over happen much faster.

Thanks for the comments so far!

Crigy by jkniest 2017-08-13T21:07:13Z

I figured out the problem with shooting. When you shoot, the robot does indeed aim at the mouse, however, when you move, the robot will aim in the direction it's moving. I think it's clear how unnatural that feels. The robot should always aim at the mouse, even while it's moving, or at least always aim at the mouse while shooting, even while moving. That alone would make this game much better.

Room Cleaner Robot 3000 by Hazza 2017-08-04T01:19:06Z

I feel bad that this Roomba has been cursed with a family that leaves whole bananas and bitten apples lying around on the floor. I also feel bad that it lacks a decent battery life. But I guess that's the challenge here, huh?

Manual Mech by Mikeliosus 2017-08-03T02:39:02Z

If fully developed, this seems like the type of game I wouldn't mind getting. I really like the graphics, audio and mood. There's a ton of potential here. You could create all sorts of crazy puzzles and put all kinds of add-ons to the mech.

The controls, like others have stated, are kinda weird, but I got used to them. They really do feel like bizarre controls on a mech, and they work for a puzzle game approach. Others have complained about the energy level, but personally, I found no problem with it.

My biggest complaint here would actually have to be the turrets. Because the controls are so non-intuitive, I couldn't figure out how to get past most of them. Perhaps in a hypothetical full version, the turrets wouldn't show up until later levels and the threats could be limited to, well, anything else. Spikes, electric beams, etc. Also, perhaps a shield add-on could be created, and a way to move the camera so you can see upcoming turrets.

Overall, this is one of the best games I've seen thus far.

Shield Defender by realryanrogers 2017-08-03T02:05:06Z

Well, congrats on finishing your first game and game jam! The game is a little bland; there is definitely a lot that you could add to this to make it better (like how you mentioned powerups), but starting out is never easy, huh? But at least you have the basics of creating a game.

I actually really like the graphics and background music. However, I also found the game to be unfair in that your shield has to be on one side to block debris, but then another piece will fall on the opposite side, rendering it impossible to block.

You could remedy this in a number of ways, such as slowing down the debris, making the shield faster, or only allowing debris to spawn a certain distance away from the shield. You could also have a sort of dash mechanic that allows you to very quickly move your shield, but the dash power is limited and must regenerate.

Aside from that, good luck on future projects!

Bunker at Day Zero by sean.beyer 2017-08-13T21:22:14Z

So you can send out multiple people to go scavenging, right? Multiple people are magically levitating up to go outside. Well, here's a glitch: If you send out more than one person at a time, you can run into two or more encounters at once. You can finish one of the encounters, but the other encounters are softlocked. You may want to fix that later, somehow.

Aside from that, I thought the game felt too easy. I think that there should be more random events, more resources to manage, and another goal other than simply to survive. Also, maybe have an extended UI that shows the hunger, chillness, and exhaustion of all the survivors at once.

Turn 0n D@ Gohst Z0n€ by dubsol 2017-08-13T20:57:52Z

Well, this was a cute entry. It may have been short, but it also has potential for a full-fledged game.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Dark Soil by Pietro Ferrantelli 2018-05-06T03:03:53Z

Well this is just about the best game I've played this event. The graphics look great, the audio is sounds amazing, and the gameplay works very well! There's only a few bugs/issues that may have already been pointed out:

1. The level display only displays the first two digits of your level, meaning if the player reaches level 100, the game shows that they're at level 10. 2. There's a plot of soil on the west side of the farm that doesn't act as actual soil; the player can't place seeds on it. 3. There's a hard cap to the number of each plant the player can place; once you plant a certain number of seeds of a certain type, trying to plant any more of that type will consume the seed, but not plant it in the soil. This may be intentional, but I feel like the player should be able to fill up every plot of dirt, and not run into a plant cap.

Aside from those bugs, this game is absolutely phenomenal! I also really think that this game would benefit from some sort of achievement system, so the player has more goals than simply to reach the highest level they can.

WITCHSΔVER by Tymus 2018-05-07T21:28:55Z

This game is really adorable, and I would love to see a more developed version of this game to have! Of course, like everyone else it seems, the visuals freeze up when playing the broom game. However, of what I did see, this game looks great, sounds great, and has a nice unifying theme to it. I'd really like to see more!

The Tower of Glass by xk_the_name 2018-05-05T19:45:51Z

When I first pulled up the game, I immediately felt chills from the music and setting. Just about everything about this game is just perfect. The audio and the graphics work together very well to establish an eerie mood, and the gameplay is also fantastic. Honestly, this is the most innovative game I've played so far, and I would love to see an even more fleshed out version of this game. Great job!

Lizards by jamioflan 2018-05-08T01:07:29Z

This was a pretty fun game! I might recommend putting a delay at the beginning of the game before the humans start drilling so the player has a chance to get a feel for the game. There's also several bugs, unfortunately. For example, at a certain point it seems my lizards didn't know what a storage room was anymore, and all the resources ended up being left on the ground with 4 perfectly empty storage rooms to be filled. I think there should be a way to tell lizards to pick items up. The danger reticle on some rooms didn't go away properly when the drills left. Also, some tasks wouldn't get finished properly, usually if I give the lizards too many tasks, and can't be canceled either. Finally, this is a suggestion, there should be a way to select lizards and move them, and to tell specific lizards to perform certain tasks. If you can polish this game up some more, this game would be really amazing, more so than it already is!

Forbidden Love by abhimonk 2018-05-06T00:42:02Z

I tell her that my favorite book is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

This is how she responds:

20000leagues.png

Fun Fact: this book actually has a manga adaptation:

https://www.amazon.com/Leagues-Under-Manga-Literary-Classics/dp/9810575564

On a serious note, I didn't expect a dating sim to show up for whatever reason, so when the first date started, I just burst out laughing. This is honestly the funniest game I've played throughout this event. I hope you win first place for humor!

Dungeon Slider by justinooncx 2018-05-05T20:04:02Z

When I first saw the images for this game, I immediately thought, "NO! Why would you make a game like this?" But after playing it once already, I've found that I really enjoy this game! This game is so much better than an actual sliding puzzle because not all the tiles have to be in the correct position in order to "win," you just need the hero to be in the bottom left and the key to be over the keyhole, if necessary.

Gradioid by BeamKirby 2018-04-28T20:38:09Z

Hey, thanks for the comments so far, though I do feel I need to address how saving works. At the end of the second screen there's a save point where you can, of course, save your game, and there some other standalone save points scattered throughout the game. Collecting an item will also save your game, as a way to cut down on extra save points.

After finishing the game, it did occur to me that the first screen is significantly more difficult than the middle game, and I probably should have toned down the difficulty. Unfortunately, it's now too late. :P However, this is a fairly difficult game in general, and I'm aware that not all people will be able to enjoy it to its full potential.

Gradioid by BeamKirby 2018-05-06T03:40:58Z

To anyone reading the comments at this time:

I just uploaded a patch that adds an interface to change one's controls. Technically, custom controls were already supported when the game was finished, but there was no interface to change the controls.

Gradioid by BeamKirby 2018-05-08T16:24:23Z

@satanos I'm glad that you seemed to enjoy my game! I tried using the auto-translate feature on YouTube to translate your video into english, and I think I got the basic idea of what you said about my game, but it would be nice to have a more proper translation if you can get that.

YOU LEFT ME. by Angela He 2018-04-25T02:36:37Z

Oh my goodness, gracious. I saw this game recommended on itch.io when downloading another LD game, and the thumbnail alone really caught my eye. This game is great. The humor in the beginning is a nice way to ease the player into the unsettling mood that the rest of the game gives. The artwork is just absolutely breathtaking, and I love how the images shift around based on your cursors position. I also love that you created a world that can be so easily fleshed out using subtext and the dialogue with others in such a short narrative. I would absolutely love to see you expand upon this world in another game.

Hyper Simox 3000 by Paulo Brunassi 2018-05-08T00:07:28Z

Interesting concept, though it's also pretty brutal. My biggest issue with this game is that if you hit the wrong color enemy (with the special shot), you get an instant game over, but simply getting hit only makes you lose a life. I think that you should get the same punishment for hitting the wrong color as you do for getting hit. On that note, while it's totally up to you as a designer, I also think that the player should have some hit points before dying, and maybe get a single health recovery at the end of each level.

Danmakoïd - Bullet hell metroidvania by Talops 2018-04-28T04:24:14Z

I see we both tackled what seems like practically the same genres: Metroidvanias and Space Shooters. Although, there is certainly a fundamental difference in what we did, whereas you used specifically Danmakus, and I used specifically Shmups. I think it's interesting to see another game with similarities to mine, and it's especially interesting to see the differences, not only in the games themselves, but the genres used.

Your game starts the player off with no powers at all; no shooting, no turning, no nothing except movement, whereas my game starts the player off with shooting and turning (albeit, only after the first screen). This is just a simple difference between games. Your game also allows the player to roam freely, but my game has the player constantly moving forward. This is an example of a fundamental difference between our two genres. In Bullet Hell games, the player always has free movement to roam the screen, and enemies typically float in front of the player in place at all times, but in classic Shmups like Gradius, etc. the player must keep moving forward, and enemies move forward past them. Your game also has a much bigger focus on avoiding bullets, but my game has more a focus on avoiding obstacles, as well as enemies charging at the player. Another big difference between our games is that in your game, subweapons are automatically added to the player's default weapon, but in my game, subweapons must be used separately from the player's main weapon.

Papa Mazai by WalkDiGidong 2018-05-07T23:25:22Z

This is the kind of game where you really only get back what you put into it; it's basically just a grinding game. It starts out really slow, but if you manage your resources well, you can gather over 100 cats (and a few dogs) and basically wipe out the entire field just by mashing the mouse button all over the place. Tbh, I spent like an hour on this game. There is certainly a lot to polish, assets aside, but I could see this potentially turning into something more. There's some buggy collisions and the zombies have poor pathfinding, and I find it hard to tell what area in front of the player an animal must be to be "put into the cage" *cough*eaten*cough*; maybe instead of having a collision area, you could create a claw object that the robot sends forth a short distance, and when an animal collides with it, they get grabbed.

Bullets of Insight by notgreat 2018-04-25T01:29:39Z

I really think the coolest part of this game is the replay feature, although, I always try way too hard to be cool. I'd like to see a video of someone pulling off all the cool tricks and getting the highest score possible.

A Knight of Music by Danny88881 2018-04-25T01:58:32Z

I think this sort of concept could be done much better. The main issue I take with this game is that it's supposed to be a rhythm game, but the only half the game is rhythm. The part with attacking enemies requires you to hit along the beat of the song, but the platforming is completely free and on its own. I think that in order to truly make a rhythm action platformer, the platforming should somehow be part of the beat as well.

I also take issue with the rhythm part of the game. The songs you have should have a very clear and deliberate beat, typically with just straight quarter notes in the base line. This way, the player gets a good grasp for what the beat is and can play in time. Speaking of time, I noticed one of your songs plays in 3/4. You really should keep your songs in 4/4, common time, so the player has an easier time keeping time. Being a musician myself, I find that counting the beats in a measure to be extremely helpful in keeping the beat, and I'm sure most people who enjoy anything rhythmic do, too. Also, your songs feel entirely too slow. I get that having slower songs in the beginning level and slowly increasing the tempo is a way to establish a difficulty curve, but your songs should still start with a higher BPM. Keeping time with a high tempo may be difficult, but keeping time with a very slow tempo can be worse. Lastly, your rhythm bar, to be frank, is poor. The rhythms are generated randomly, often with large gaps between notes and some sections that suddenly throw a ton of notes at you at once. Your notes should come at a steady pace, and should try to follow the song.

Taking all these criticisms into consideration, I'm sure this game could be really great!
