The ships wreckage keep killing me! Nice and fun!

Very nice entry. Good graphs, fits theme very well. Congratulations.

I really liked the idea behind this and had a fair amount of fun playing the game. It took me a while to realise that it was the wreckage that was killing me, and not the shots and I was a bit lost as to how to progress for a while. It didn't click for me that I was actually play 'Simon says' for a while, so I thought the target ship was simply changing colour. However, once it clicked, I really enjoyed it and managed to get to level 4. I'd say the one thing that the game really needed was a moment when you die, before the game progresses to the next screen, to understand what killed you (e.g. your ship flashing with the bullet that killed you). Great game, great idea. I really loved the music too.

Nice game, nice concept.

solsforest 2018-04-25 13:25

I enjoyed playing this! I didn't take in to account the wreckage hitting me. That was cool. I love dthe pixelart an the music was really getting me pumped!

giraffecat 2018-04-25 17:34

This was a clever concept, well executed! Had an initial couple of moments of confusion, but read the synopsis again and it all fell into place. At one point I went through a phase of forgetting to pay attention to the ship colours after completing a level; if I can be an armchair designer for a moment, it would be nice if different tones played for each ship colour, like the Simon toy, and the same tone of explosion occurred when destroying ships with the green weapon.

ursagames 2018-04-25 18:58

I really like GiraffeCat's suggestion of having different tones for each ship, but the game feels really polished already. That would have just been an extra layer of icing on the cake. The concept is well executed, but the wreckage can be a bit difficult to track as it doesn't have a high contrast from the background.

Thank you very much for the kind comments guys. I'm very happy you'll enjoyed my small game.

paulo-brunassi 2018-04-26 16:25

@GiraffeCat yeah I planned to do that, if you pay attention the game doesn't have at all a sfx when you destroy a ship with the 'special shot'. But I ran out of time and the sfx that I had wasn't working the way I wanted (I'm not very good with sfx).

That looks awesome! on mobile atm but bookmarking this

Really nice! I like the whole concept of it but at the beginning I didn't realized what I needed to do (the screens with the Level X are not clear enough telling you that that's the color you're trying to shoot with the special shot) and so I got around 2790 points at first just playing it as a straight shmup. But overall I really enjoyed it, great job!

beamkirby 2018-05-08 00:07

Interesting concept, though it's also pretty brutal. My biggest issue with this game is that if you hit the wrong color enemy (with the special shot), you get an instant game over, but simply getting hit only makes you lose a life. I think that you should get the same punishment for hitting the wrong color as you do for getting hit. On that note, while it's totally up to you as a designer, I also think that the player should have some hit points before dying, and maybe get a single health recovery at the end of each level.

Great stuff, but the level intro screen gives you a short glimpse of the ship that you have to shoot down with the special shot. Also I found it a bit confusing to shoot with X and Z, why not with mouse controls? But other than that I have no complaints, good stuff :)

Mine has mouse shooting, but other that that you will have to judge for yourself :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/sam

It was a good game, very challenging.

tempii 2018-05-10 13:15

I really loved playing the game. Nice idea for the theme and absolutely great pixel art. The only thing I would probably change is allowing 1 or 2 hits before you die (so you aren't a one hit), for everything else I don't have anything to criticize.

connell 2018-05-10 13:16

Interesting game. Maybe have it fill up the full screen or make it windowed (i didn't enjoy the black bars on the side). I liked how when you killed an enemy you would have to move out of the way (made it much more fun and challenging). Maybe for shooting make the keys more like space and for the special one do enter or something. Over all it was a good game, interesting to play and the audio was great!

I just released a post-jam version for my game. It would be appreciated if you checked it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/platscii

Pretty neat! I think it fits the theme really well and enables a lot more strategy in a shoot em up.

lookslikesomething 2018-05-10 14:21

I started to play it without reading the description, so at first, I was unable to figure why the game over shows so often!

But once you get the idea, it's a pretty cool game! Had a lot of fun playing it, dying because of the wreckages and trying again ^^

riordan 2018-05-10 15:43

At first, I thought it was an average shoot 'em up (skipped the description) so I was confused when I kept repeating Level 1 or seeing a game over for no reason. Once I read it, the game turned out to be great.

I do wish the color order prompts were more eye-catching as I often ended up not seeing the first color in most orders.

Aside from that, the graphics are great. I saw a gif of this game from the feed and got immediately drawn to it.

yetman 2018-05-10 15:59

Nice game. I skipped the description and kept dying a lot without understanding why. Now after reading the description, I still die a lot but now I know why. The "Simon Says" part was confusing because I initially didn't notice that the color sequence in the level splash screen was what I should follow. Despite my initial confusion, the game was really fun and the music is so great that I could play any game just to listen to it. Great job.

Nice game here :) Well done !!
