Hillarious running animation :) But I'm a little disapointed it wasn't a car game with the graphic from the screenshot :)

anchorlight 2020-10-05 19:00

I really liked the artwork and got some strong Dante's Inferno vibes from the game.

I wish the combat had been a little stronger-- the delay between attacks is a little excessive, and the enemies don't really react to being struck. I would recommend having them get moved away from the player slightly on hit, and adding a two or three hit combo where the delay between attacks is reduced up until a third hit. The combat also felt entirely unnecessary as enemies don't pose a threat-- I would have balanced this with quick enemies that chase you in a very loose circle, letting you either combat them or outwit them since you're Naruto-running too fast. I get it though, it's a jam game.

I like the music for the game, which fits it surprisingly well, but the lack of audio feedback for events was a little disappointing. I would have liked a hit sound effect and portal sound effect at the very least. I also didn't really understand any of the audio in the intro, partially because the music was still at full volume.

The flat shaded artwork was pretty strong in some segments, and definitely got its environments across well. I do think there were a few areas that could use a little extra detail, but again... jam game.

I scrapped an entire idea because of my fear of getting a dialogue system done on time, so congratulations for actually implementing one! That said, I would probably auto-complete the dialogue when players move away from the speaker. It's strange having to run through the conversation when your character is now halfway across the map.

All in all, well done. I really like the spin you took on it, I played it to the end, and I'll admit I got a good laugh out of the upbeat 80s montage music kicking in as I began to narutorun.

oaksguard 2020-10-05 19:24

The animations of the character are great! apart from the down facing one... It is amazing that you achieved such lighting and details in 72 hours. I liked as well that the levels them are in fact a giant drawing of some character. I would have like a bit more reason to punch those slime king (which by the way, adorable).

I had fun, so thanks for the game.

P.S. The music is great.

josephdevelops 2020-10-05 22:49

Thanks @anchorlight for all the feedback. I just started using C# and Unity a little over two weeks ago.. I wanted most of the stuff you suggested but I didn't have the right combination of time and experience to make it happen.

@oaksguard Yes, the down animation was pretty rough, they were all rough but running down was the most rough. I didn't have enough time to draw that much stuff. I was originally intending to make a super low-frame run like original Mario on NES. However, I needed six to make it work and I ended up not finishing many of the things I wanted.

@smiley Sorry no cars. Didn't realize it looked like a racing game. It certainly does. I need a ninja on there or something.

Thanks for your comments guys, I'll certainly check out your games this week. =)

andidebob 2020-10-06 06:51

The art in this game is really interesting. The characters look really nice, especially the main characters animation. And they work surprisingly well with the "drawn in ms paint"-looking backgrounds. I am not sure if the way you go through the portals is trial and error or if there is actual progression, but I honestly lacked the motivation to try and finish the game, maybe the dialogue needs some more openended-ness, making you wonder what is at the end, instead of being totally vague. But it's a solid jam entry.

celes 2020-10-06 07:21

Fun and good game for a starter! I wish the combat system wasn't as delayed however. It felt a bit slow. I think it would have been nice if there was an HP system too, but given the time period the game is pretty successful. I loved the Dragonball and Naruto references. It's what made the game a little hilarious to me. I also actually liked the MSPaint art too and it's not so bad either for a game we would need to make within a couple of days.

neonalig 2020-10-06 07:23

Loved the music! Wonderful in every regard. The graphics were... interesting... but if anything that only made the game more fun and didn't cease to crack me up. In terms of improvement, obviously graphics. Occasionally I dropped an input or two, which when the game only consists of WASD and Spacebar, it's a bit annoying, but not too major. I can't get over how good that music is though, and the character dialogues are hilarious! Not quite sure how this all fits in with the theme however...

tricky-fat-cat 2020-10-06 07:32

It's a great firs submission, keep going and do your best in the future!

keithswanger 2020-10-06 08:53

Movement is nice, and story is intriguing. Nice job! Would love to see more from this world you've created!

rgilpt 2020-10-06 09:04

Has you said :D it was a walking simulation :) I don't think the enemies attack you, I don't understood the theme. But for the first LD game it is great and I really liked your graphics! :)

meek-bits 2020-10-06 09:11

The music creates a great atmosphere. It works well together with space background and character animations. I couldn't get out of the loop but I guess that might have been the idea :)

The level backgrounds broke a bit the overall experience for me. I think it's due to the contrast with polished character look and animations.

I enjoyed learning more about the story by speaking with different characters. All in all, it was enjoyable :)

mikadoh 2020-10-06 09:14

What a fun game! Sometimes I got stuck and the attack felt a bit slow but it was a fun experience.

jin9310 2020-10-06 12:57

Nice entry you have there. Would be great to force player to encounter the enemies since now you can just fly by till the end. But overall nice job done! Really dig the music!

grizzliusmaximus 2020-10-06 15:22

For somebody that only had about 2 weeks under his belt in programming, I must say well done! It took me years to get to your level! Not many beginners know how to make good text typewriter effect. Love the sprites too. I swear, when I saw the old man, voiced out his lines like a wise elder :)

josephdevelops 2020-10-06 18:24

@grizzliusmaximus for clarification sake, I am not new to programming. New to C#. I've done other languages for awhile.

@jin9310 Yes, I originally wanted combat to be the focal point of the short game. It proved to be quite complicated for the scope of the jam for me.

@mikadoh Yes, I am new to collisions in Unity. I have to say that they are not as dependable out of the box as I'd like, especially with physics involved.

@meek-bits @neonalig Glad you like the music. Go follow Kanoa on Twitch. https://www.twitch.tv/thekanoabeatstream

@keithswanger @tricky-fat-cat @celes @andidebob Thanks for complements.

ramble-house-games 2020-10-07 00:43

Very cool world to run around in. The art is unique and the different atmospheres of the various worlds keep the sense of adventure up with out feeling disconnected. At the end I think I jumped into a vortex which, I hope, means I won.

grizzliusmaximus 2020-10-07 01:57

@josephdevelops Oh sorry about the misunderstanding. Though it's still amazing trying to use an engine you have not fully mastered using yet regardless

josephdevelops 2020-10-07 02:07

@ramble-house-games Yes Ramble, you won. You are a winner!

@grizzliusmaximus I just clarified because I didn't want to take toooo much a credit. Just a little. ;)

snowinn 2020-10-07 04:19

I love the 80s style feel and music! I was also a huge fan of the Area 51 memes and this is right on.

danial-jumagaliyev 2020-10-07 04:29

10/10 would Naruto run through Area 52 again. Whilst the graphics weren't the best (not saying that they're bad, I mean programmer art is very welcome) in this game, I still enjoyed playing it.

lees-pac 2020-10-07 04:31

I LOVE IT, THIS GAME IS SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!

codeman1010 2020-10-07 04:44

Such a great start to game development, I hope you stay at it. Can't wait to see the next game!

eugenik 2020-10-07 06:28

this was really good keep it up!

mrredbeard 2020-10-07 09:39

Liked the game! Love the gamepad support!

necauqua 2020-10-07 16:09

I liked the 2.5d graphics choice, felt very unique and I loved the character animation. Some retro vibes in the music also helped to get the mood, great job!

Tip of the hat for providing a web version of the game :)

roikku 2020-10-07 17:51

10/10 would anime-run again. :D Very nice for a Unity-learning project!!!!

robowarrior1982 2020-10-07 19:53

At the beginning i was confuse because i thinked it's a platformer gameplay (in accord to the graphics), when i found i can move up and down on the platform like a beathem all ;) The music is cool and character graphics is great, good work !

ericbolseiro 2020-10-07 23:37

Maravilhosa capa do jogo. Música maravilhosa.

naali 2020-10-08 00:06

Very interesting. This felt most unique.

patrickjr 2020-10-08 01:41

At the beginning of the first area I got stuck under that first pillar thing. Had to restart the game.

I love the music and the art. The backgrounds, even though they look like they were made in 20 seconds without much attention, are actually not bad at all. The characters look perfect.

Also, the combat should be more developed. I only killed like 2 of those slime things and ignored the rest. The combat didn't have any purpose because you can't be damaged and it's easier to just ignore the enemies.

nicardo 2020-10-08 09:35

Nice music, and fun to play.

harrm 2020-10-08 21:04

The animation of the main character is great and the atmosphere is amazing. However, the progression of the game plot is not very clear and thus fails to be captivating.

cyborgx7 2020-10-08 21:16

Enjoyed it. The fighting was to its detriment. The game got a lot better when I realized it didn't matter and I could just run past it. Maybe should have been about dodging instead? In the very first level some of the tight areas had a really good feel when I hit them right. Not sure what did it, but the animation with the movement gave it a real good sense of speed. The wider areas later on lost that. Though I did like a lot of the art design. Will have to remember some of those choices.

josephdevelops 2020-10-08 22:15

@cyborgx7 @patrickjr Ya, I meant for the combat to be more functional but I got stuck, and I just left the slimes because I felt they were fun to hit. I kinda got stuck with player health, enemy attacks, and enemy AI. Would not have made it on time if I finished that part. Certainy going to be working on that over this month. Thanks for giving me a bit of extra fire on my bum to get me moving.

@harrm Ya, I got a bit stuck on dialogue. I intended to implement choices but I couldn't figure it out quickly enough. I just left some dramatic lines... You are right, it really doesn't make sense. I will get it locked in a bit more as I learn Unity a bit better.

@nicardo @naali @ericbolseiro @robowarrior1982 @roikku @necauqua @mrredbeard @eugenik @codeman1010 @lees-pac @danial-jumagaliyev @snowinn Thank you for playing!

mackandrius 2020-10-08 22:28

Hey, loved the music and the mood and of course massive thumbs up for the naruto run!!

blue-pin-studio 2020-10-10 22:28

Good submission, especially for your first unity game. Some of the problems were :

I didn't need to fight the slimes, i just ran past all of them, even the ones i killed had no reward or purpose. Sometimes the particle effects didnt even spawn

The story was sort of disjointed from the title of the game, legend of the stormer? breaking into area 52? Neither of those things were ever mentioned. It was mostly filled with coma-tropes

The art style was inconsistent because some of it was doodling on microsoft paint and the others were high fidelity pixel art

All-in-all not bad, but not really a game, it was more like a movement demo.
