I really loved playing this game. I was allways running low on ammo really fast, this made it a bit difficult. I loved the feedback when killing enemys, the nice sound and the blood everywhere.

thesand 2017-05-01 15:32

I too really loved playing this. It's a bit difficult getting out of the hearth pit after you fall down. And the character was a bit hard to see at some points. But i still all in all really enjoyd playing. Good job ^^

danman9914 2017-05-01 15:46

Awesome pixel art! I made it through the first night and I consider that an achievement.

glimaleite 2017-05-01 15:52

Great graphics and audio. Shooting feels soooo good! I feel like you guys made it too hard at the very beginning. The first wave is too hard, I don't really see the point of starting like that hehe. Nevertheless, awesome job! Cheers to the audio guy/gal!

smeax 2017-05-01 16:52

Thank you guys for the lovely feedback :) i will take that and adjust the game a little bit.

takusan 2017-05-01 17:30

Okay, after I got it all figured out it became really entertaining. My suggestion when it comes to signalling the player that something is happening: use a louder sound, and give some visual feedback. In my case, the sound when you break down wood/stone is almost inaudible, main music covers it up, and since there was no visual cue, I had no idea that the process of breaking wood/stone was taking place. I discovered that it needed some time only after a few, very brief plays (since ammo was finished instantly).

Also, it'd be a good idea to make the interaction area of rocks/trees a bit more forgiving - since player moves really quickly, and the position to begin chopping wood or stone needs to be precise, it can get a bit frustrating, if you make n-th circle around the tiny area.

And there's a nasty bug: when using 'retry', and about 30% of the time just when loading the level on new game, it's all garbled up:

Clipboard02.png

But, all that aside, since it's subject to improvement, not core issue, it's a fun idea and game looks like it has high replayability, which is very welcome. Pacing seems fitting, and it's really challenging to get far. So, overall, good job and keep developing it and smoothing it out :)

Cheers!

P.S. if not all audio is yours, please check opt-out for audio on your game page. I left you a rating, but without audio category (it's still active).

vidinu 2017-05-01 17:31

Great bloody efects and great graphics on pixel art. The mechanics of the game is simple but gives result. I would have liked to have emphasized more the sound effect of chopping stone and trees. In spite of that this is indeed a good game. Congratulations.

stanislav 2017-05-01 17:32

looks like a fun. Nice art and music. But where should I get ammo?

smeax 2017-05-01 17:37

@stanislav you have to break the stones with the mouse button pressed. With the iron you get out of it you can craft ammo at the workbench.

smeax 2017-05-01 18:32

@Takusan I added a new sfx for breaking down things and I created a little particle effect. I can't replicate the retry bug, anyone else gets it?

jakob-willforss 2017-05-01 19:51

Awesome game engine, and general feeling of it. Had some issues actually crafting the bullets though. I pressed E, but nothing happened. Probably just missed something obvious though, as I managed to craft 30 bullets once. Also, got screen tearing issue after restart forcing me to Alt + F4 before continue playing. So my overall experience was - Very exciting and promising game, and some more balancing debugging left to do!

dragojt 2017-05-01 21:44

Nice, it reminds me to Risk of Rain! Graphics look so nice! Well done :)

wtoa 2017-05-02 12:40

Difficult game but the graphics is done really nicely, plus I love the gore as well!

puarsliburf 2017-05-02 13:21

The game's pretty hard but really fun. The graphics look great and I really love the gore effects.

nilanjan 2017-05-02 13:42

The game is pretty good. I love the looks of it especially! Great job!

yves 2017-05-02 13:51

The game/art is pretty sick. Looks really gorgeous :)

palemachine 2017-05-02 14:34

Gorgeous visuals and a kicking soundtrack combined with a very hard game. Surviving the first night is definitely an achievement, haha. Finely crafted!

sebasrez 2017-05-02 17:12

Cool and responsive. Graphics and music were great too. A bit challenging but fun once you get the hang of it. I like the idea of having to make your own bullets and the importance of the fire. It would be great to have a way to heal as well since there is only so much time, it would be a nice risk/reward.

smeax 2017-05-02 17:48

@sebasrez thank you for your feedback! Yeah I thought about some material the monsters could drop and with this material you could fix the heart a little bit or something like this ^^

yami-no-tenshi-8 2017-05-02 18:38

I really like the idea, the gameplay is pretty easy to learn (I would just have add the possibility to jump with W, jumping with Space felt a bit uncomfortable for me), the atmosphere is good and I enjoy this Wild West style song ! :cowboy:

I went until the 10th night to see if the difficulty was growing up, but it doesn't seem so. If more ennemies were to appear every night, it can easily add some challenge to the game. Maybe limiting the weapon's range could also add some difficulty ? Because if you just stand in the middle of the map in front of the fire during the ennemies attack, the game becomes really easy. Or maybe just adding some kind of rocks on the left end and right end of the middle platform, so that you can't shoot the ennemies from there ?

The pixel art is really nice and the animations were good as well ! Great work done on it !

smeax 2017-05-02 19:21

@yami-no-tenshi-8 Thanks for the big feedback! Just added possibility to jump with W ;D. It's really embarrassing for me to say that, but as i implemented the "difficulty" i totally forget to test it... I'm working on it right now. Also i'll try to make the middle of the planet a bit different so you can't just stand there!

yami-no-tenshi-8 2017-05-02 19:54

Ahah, no problem about the difficulty, I did the same in the previous LD, implementing something to make the game harder as time pass, but actually it was just making it easier !

Anyway I will try this post jam version with great pleasure !

gerardb 2017-05-02 23:02

Really nice game in all aspects. But i'd be nice to have an easier begining. I never managed to stay alive for more than a couple minutes.

Kepp it up!

kunonooni 2017-05-02 23:52

I love the mechanic and the art. For me the character moves a little too fast, but that doesn't take away from the game. Is it possible to get out of the heart area if you fall down? I wasn't able to do it, again could just be me. Not sure I can say more that hasn't already been said. I could honestly just pause the game and stare at it because the art is just so beautiful!

Oh I played the original version of the game.

smeax 2017-05-03 00:02

@kunonooni Thank you for your feedback! :) It's easy to get out of the heart area by using the double jump. Or have you tried it with the double jump and it didn't work?

meronsoda 2017-05-03 00:15

It is very very good. Some mix of Shank 2, Terraria, Magicite. You gotta craft the bullets and keep the fire lit, but the time is short. The hard mode is really hell, that tunnels and moving platforms make everything so much hard! Perfect!

How do you make your art, what do you use? And how large (in resolution) are these landscapes? Btw...

Did I hear multiplayer support?

smeax 2017-05-03 00:26

@meronsoda thanks for the lovely feedback! :) I make most of my art with PyxelEdit. What do you mean with landscapes? The background? Or the planet itself? The background images are just repeated images. I think the planets image resolution is 1050x1080 or something like that. Multiplayer support would be a fun idea but i can't work very much on the game for the next few weeks i think :confounded:

dgspitzer 2017-05-03 07:12

So much fun! Really like those kind of game (like "Kingdom: New Lands") Good style and excellent gameplay!

Got a bug like this when restart. bug.jpg

smeax 2017-05-03 08:00

@dgspitzer Thanks! hm..really don't know how this is happening

siryakko 2017-05-03 08:46

Yeah beautiful pixels and survival action, what else do we need :D?

nick-bota 2017-05-03 09:48

Mind-blowingly awesome! Love the way the game looks, sounds, feels and plays. The fact that's great about it is that I think it would be really easy to scale it and make a full game with more modes an upgrade system and a story behind it but that's for the future, right now the game is definite 5/5 in my book, great work, keep it up!

spinaljack 2017-05-03 10:14

Very juicy game, liked that the gun felt powerful and weighty. I would have preferred an ending rather than endless though. I got to night 5 on my best run, it doesn't seem to get any more difficult. The best tactic is to ignore the fire and trees and just craft bullets, then stand at one of the portals and fire constantly at the opposite direction until day time. Also the jump felt unsatisfying because of the amount of drag.

eltee91 2017-05-03 11:14

no mac build :(

smeax 2017-05-03 15:18

@eltee91 don't have a mac :/

hdteav 2017-05-03 15:43

Great graphics and overall atmosphere. Easy to learn and fun to play. Only thing that bugged me was the jump.

davikin92 2017-05-03 16:02

Got the same bug as @dgspitzer

I tried jumping off the cliff for a quick restart but I don't die. Anyway, I like how it fits the theme and the feeling of constantly running around for collecting resources, investing them, and defending from enemies. You could balance the enemy spawning with the "peace spans" in a way that the difficulty increases progressively and allowing the player learn when it's a good moment to collect and when it's a good moment to invest so they can develop a strategy and take the best advantage of these activities.

Great job!

dejvo 2017-05-03 16:15

really well made, but it felt too hard to do anything. also, it could use some in game tutorialising and longer firs day.

but the graphics were spot on, and I am really surprised how much you've managed to get done

spaceman 2017-05-03 16:28

I really like the art and lighting! I kept falling in the heart pit and getting stuck though... (I assume there's a way out but I couldn't figure it out). I also think cutting down trees could use more audio/visual feedback when you right click.

swanito 2017-05-03 16:31

I had a crash after a while for some reasons but other than that very fun game! I love the art style and the music gives a really special atmosphere to it all. Good job!

jod 2017-05-03 20:11

Oh wow, great animation and lighting. The shooting has a really good 'weight' to it and the sound effects are very nice. Getting out of the pit... uhm.. I couldn't do that? :)

smeax 2017-05-03 20:28

hm..whats that problem with the heart pit? When I play the game I can jump out of it very easy by using the double jump. What specifically is your problem? I would like to fix that :)

cvetk0 2017-05-04 20:15

This game has some super nice graphics and setting, but man it's hard... or at least I'm to clumsy to do anything the way I should. I did manage to light a fire once, still not sure how since I had wood on other tries but pressing E key just didn't do any magic. And then I ran out of ammo every time and died . Still, I think it's fun.

Perhaps the "How to" should explain mechanics a little better and I found it impossible to get out of the heart pit once I fell into it... which was more times than I didn't haha. At first I also didn't notice the exit button, perhaps you should enable exiting from current game by pressing escape key as well.

Good work overall, keep it up!

mrchippy 2017-05-04 20:28

Great Job. The graphics and lighting were really nice looking. It was a bit too hard for me though. It also would have been nice to have some sort of indication of how close we were to breaking iron or a tree. I really like the shooting effect though and the game was a lot of fun.

louspirit 2017-05-04 20:49

This game looks really great, awesome work for only one person. The theme choice and the gameplay are innovative. I restarted a lot because I liked the game but I was also frustrated because it was really hard! I noticed that I had to jump to kill the ennemies (otherwise my bullets were stopped by the ground). The musics and fire sounds are much enjoyable.

askania-m 2017-05-04 20:54

Brutal mode, cruel world :D Ok, I tried to stay present as long as possible, music inspired and was right for the moment, but I found it complicated to produce items. There are too much enemies, that didn't die after the first shot, the planet's heart is too weak. However, totally assume that the graphics and motion of the screen when the hero shots are the best among what I've seen on this LD38. Great job!

seconddimension 2017-05-05 12:53

Beautiful game, I genuinely love the graphics and the atmosphere! I had some trouble getting out of the heart area as well, couldn't double-jump out of there. I think overall the movement was a little too fast for the precision that you need (to chop down trees etc). The shooting felt very satisfying though, great blood particles when you kills the bugs!

This is not a criticism, more my own preference, but I would love to explore more of this little world you created without the stress of fighting and crafting all the time

tweedle 2017-05-07 18:14

great graphics and mechanics, well done! couldn't survive past day 2 on the jam build, this game is brutal and I like it

kabalatrance 2017-05-07 19:55

Fantastic graphic and great atmoshepre. Gun shooting felt so powerful! One small problem is that its to hard to exit heart hole, once you get in, and that there is no reaction on the monster when we shoot it.

noseminer 2017-05-07 20:01

Took me some time to figure out how to get out of the pit but after that it was really fun. Love the juice on the gun. Would be nice to have more effect when you hit the monster and the first night is probably too difficult. Great art style and game!

powerspark 2017-05-08 02:21

So much adrenaline! Awesome. The juiciness is superb and it got really intense right around the third night (in a fun way) :D

It did take me a bit to figure out that the rocks were needed (I think some particle effect would help show that you're mining it) and the first set of felt very strong with 3 hp. Also I noticed that once one enemy gets down in the heart area it forces you to go down and spam everything with shots down there until the night ends. Those were the only complaints, overall it felt very awesome! Good job!

blacksheepza 2017-05-10 20:01

Definitely one of the best games I have played so far! And by far the most addictive. I played way more rounds than intended! :D

Some really great juice in this game and the art is really well done! I really like all the gore! If you take this further I think having the enemies give a bit of feedback like flashing when they are hit would be cool because right now it is hard to tell which enemy you are shooting when aiming at a crowd of them. Being able to use the resources to construct a few more things like a wall or something so that you can control the flow of enemies could be cool. One frustrating thing is not being able to attack the enemies when you are out of bullets. Maybe adding a low powered close combat attack would maybe help?

Really impressed with what you made! Especially since you were only one person! So congrats on making such a cool game!

If you have a moment please have a look at our Jam entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-jam-working-title Any feedback out be greatly appreciated!

jaimuepe 2017-05-11 20:23

Great game! Really difficult, i only got to the third day, but i think the mechanics fit together really well. Good job

harry-alissavakis 2017-05-11 23:24

I am not good at this game. At all :P But I enjoyed trying to survive the first night 3 or 4 times! You have invested a lot in game feel and polish and it really shows! I love the impact of the weapon, the gore effect, the tight controls of the player as well as the whole environment! I usually suck at this kind of games but maybe it would help if it was a bit easier at the start, just so that people can get enough ammo. Other than that, it was really a beautifully made game! The graphics were great, the music was complimenting the whole theme pretty well, and the gameplay was pretty innovative and interesting! Well done!

thedoodleguy 2017-05-12 08:10

I was unable to play as I'm on Mac, but I watched it on stream and had to come comment. This game looks amazing! Great concept, beautiful artwork and sounds. Well done

glitchy-pixel 2017-05-16 04:14

I enjoyed a lot. The graphics were lovely, and the gamaply was hard! Protecting my heart was not easy.

I somehow felt that I missed way to much with my bullets, but I don't know if it was a lack of feedback or it was just my aim was too bad.

I believe a little bit of polish in audio here and there would make it perfect, but its mostly nitpicking.

I really enjoyed it. Nice!

apostate-games 2017-05-16 04:18

Great graphics and lot of fun! Definitely a challenge from the get go. Overall great submission! Nice work!

tony-godfrey 2017-05-19 17:52

Really great atmosphere - the visual effects were well done and the audio seemed to match the atmosphere. It was really difficult (I played the jam build, not 1.1 - will try those next). Great!

2017-05-25 14:37

Lovely graphics, interesting game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKyqjTvBURc
