LD14 — Advancing Wall of Doom (28)

Unknown by X-0ut

Bit confusing if you've played Portal due to slight differences, but overall this is truly incredible.

Grey Goo by TimS

Good fun, enough that I tried it several times.

Unnamed Entry by TenjouUtena

Wasn't able to play game even though I had python and pygame installed.

sekhar by sinoth

Well, first I agree with the control issues mentioned by mjau.

As for the game, I find the actual gameplay confusing and strange, it's not clear what you are actually supposed to do to get the spheres. But the pieces that went into assembling the game are amazing. The motion of the cubes, the x-ray vision, the collision, and the sound effect when moving are all awesome.

It's like the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. :-)

DoomDrive by sf17k

Hmm, Frimkron's comment is interesting. I was going to suggest that getting disoriented after a jump was one of my only complaints about the game. I'd like an arrow as a hint for where to head to get away from the wall.

Overall, though, it's good fun. Well done!

Mind Wall by SethR

Very, very good. I want to give it a 5 in everything, but I was somewhat annoyed by the repetitiveness in a single level. It seems like there is a bit of chance to whether or not you see the pattern right away, and I don't think you need as many "clears" to demonstrate that you understand that particular piece. Also, especially in the diagonal one, the method of selecting the block location is too slow, IMO. I think mouse control would have made this better.

But these are minor nitpicks. The game is great. The whole concept is amazing, the graphics are very impressive and the art style was nice and clean.

The Hotel Advance by Redbone

Good game. Simple concept but well polished, nice progressive difficulty levels. Jumping mechanic and enemies pretty well tuned. Nice to have music.

Defend your castle by pythong

Good stuff, impressive amount of gameplay and behaviour for a 48 hour competition.

Wall of Locust by ondrew

I think this was great technically, but the gameplay needed work. As mentioned by others, the missing mouse cursor was very annoying. Perhaps a click and drag would have worked better to set a direction quickly?

The Triumph of Time by muku

Great game, one of the best I've reviewed so far!

Escape from LHC by mathias

Pretty fun, I also like the black hole effect.

Extinguish by LunarCrisis

I liked the pixel and lighting effects, I liked the concept, and the realization of the gameplay was fun. Great job!

SuperShred by LoneStranger of LoneStranger Designs

Great job, the game has a clean design and implementation that is appealing.

Crush by Jpfed

Really well done, enjoyed the game. Like the fact that there are configurable options. Graphics and effects are suitable, and the sounds are good. Menus are nice.

Drag the Wall by jeb

Nice graphics and sound, confusing gameplay. Responsiveness of the wall you drag around seems weird.

Jach’s Lava Flee by Jach

The messed up jumping physics are disappointing, because otherwise the game looks pretty good and has a decent amount of polish, sound effects, etc.

The respawn after death is also too harsh, putting you right in front of the lava again.

empire the wall by increpare

Crazy, grim, kinda fun!

Falling Wall of Doom by ido

I like the role reversal of getting to play the wall. The core idea is good, but it needs more depth. The restart after losing is annoying.

Snap To Grid by Hempuli

Nice job, well polished and an impressively difficult but pretty logical solution.

Doom Runner by Endurion

Great game, loved the gameplay, just some usability problems. I found it very difficult to judge the distances of posts because there was no shadow cast by them to compensate for the camera angle.

Overall, though, this was really very good. So far it is the game I played the longest of the ones I have judged.

Advance 2 – Aftermath by DrPetter

Wow, um, kind of disturbing.

More like a work of strange art than a game, but it's very well made. Good graphics, sound, music, controls and menus.

Robo-Jimmy and the Bouncy Adventure of Doom by Draknek

Lots of polish and potential here. Please release more levels later!

The Attack of the Evil Unicycles of Doom LD14 by doohan

Great first LD, my biggest complaint is having to place the blocks using a jumping character. It just doesn't seem to make sense as a control scheme and makes the level very hard.

The concept is great, the unicycles are pretty cool, and the level was good. Having the block limit made things trickier.

Put the Ball in the Basket by Doches

Really, really well done. Very good polish, I didn't notice any bugs, nice clean art, easy to play and understand, lots of levels, sound and music...

Great, great job. It's a bit weak on the actual theme, but otherwise is amazing.

ethergrind by dstrysnd

This is tough for me to rate because the game looks really great, you have some cool effects going on, and you have some great sounds. But the game is frustratingly difficult with some odd choices (attacked while choosing powerups?), so it actually wasn't very fun for me.

Still, it's a pretty amazing piece of work so I have to rate it well. Props for getting music done too.

Too Heavy For Re-Entry by demonpants

Very impressive for the 8 hours you had, especially graphically.

Cool concept.

The sound effects you had spoken were fine, but the crash sound effect really hurt my ears, so I'm afraid I have to rate that down.

Rock Bank; Rock your way through the working day! by Deepflame

Funny idea but extremely confusing because you have combined a modal use of the keys (pick mode, stamp mode, assign mode) with multiple actions in each mode (3 picks, 3 stamps, 3 managers). It probably makes perfect sense to you but I couldn't even beat the easiest difficulty despite being pretty good at rockband (I used my keyboard, though). Maybe I'm missing something?

[Wall Girl] by 5parrowhawk

Yeah, the game is too difficult, but with everything else being so excellent, the game is still awesome.

Art is incredible for 48 hours, animation is great (bombs and super), performance was good with so much going on, and the first parts of the level were fun. The gameplay idea is really fun and cool, similar to Ikaruga.

Nitpicks:
- didn't like the wall switching method... maybe better to have less circles and have them togglable/cycleable directly with buttons?
- wall switching didn't seem to work completely... I could only take non-red circles and make them red, no other changes worked.
- You mentioned music? I got no sound of any kind.
