and just like that by bburbank 2011-08-23T16:30:00
Awesome, really liked the atmospheric feel of the game and the music was perfect. Great job!

Awesome, really liked the atmospheric feel of the game and the music was perfect. Great job!
Nice lighting, I really liked how the tiles would fade out when they were no longer in the FOV, nice touch.
I really liked this game. I hope you continue working on it because it has lots of potential.
Couple Notes:
-At first I had no clue what was going on, I basically had to read the tutorial image to figure out what to do.
-One suggestion would be maybe you could start out with enough wood to make a tower.
-Really like the socketable Gem idea
Great job, really enjoyed it.
@ointment
Exactly! I agree that the game does become uninteresting quite quickly. That hit me about half way through developing and I almost ended up quitting, but I'm glad I kept going and finished. I made a mistake making the levels random hoping that they would be fun enough to play, but they weren't, so I would have been better off just creating a set of predefined levels. I probably would of had to time to add a semblance of a story line as well. Lesson learned.
@tgijsola
Yeah, there was plans for some treasure and more items, but I didn't really have enough time to achieve what I wanted. I'll probably work on this a little more and make it more of a tradition dungeon crawler with a non-linear dungeon layout and actual enemies. Also having your followers participate in fighting would be pretty cool.
@FireSlash
Strange, I've never seen that before. Probably not a floating point issue as the tile rending is all integer math. I'm tempted to say it might be a driver issue, but that's probably unlikely. I'll investigate and see if I can find anything.
Thanks for the feedback, it really is appreciated!
Platformer based tower defense game is an interesting idea. It's something I've never played. That being said, I had some collision detection issues. I could jump from the bottom platform and I would fly all the way up to the top. Also, after I built two towers, nothing would ever get past. Does it ever get more difficult?
I liked how the music increased in intensity the further you made it. Nice touch!
Thanks! I would definitely recommend XNA, it is a great library to use.
>I noticed some white lines come up when jumping, is it usual for XNA to have glitches like that?
It seems a few people get them, but I don't think it is very common. I think it is more of a video driver issue. (Perhaps updating drivers will fix it).
Were the levels randomly generated? I played for a while and noticed the same obstacles popping up back to back. My first thought was that this is a little repetitive, but them I thought that it might be random. If it wasn't randomly generated, then I would suggest trying to mix up various things so the player doesn't do the same thing over and over again.
Not being able to go backwards was a little annoying, also no real explanation that shooting the barrels several times will make them disappear. Those things seem to really be holding it back. Other than those, nice game for 48 hours.
Very awesome!
-The graphics are really nice and crisp.
-The audio is nice as well.
-Really good job with all the different weapons, they had a decent amount of variety and they were all enjoyable to use.
One thing that I wasn't clear on is when I came into contact with an enemy, it seemed like I had an opportunity to escape or something but I couldn't really pinpoint what to do. I managed to escape once, but I'm not sure how I did it. Really solid entry, good job!
Good job and neat concept, but it took me a while to figure out what was actually going on. Also some of the levels were tedious and required me to backtrack 10-15 seconds and by then it's hard to remember the exact sound.
It seems like it would be nice, if when a level started it would play the door sound so perhaps you could find it on your way to the door. The way it is now, I feel like I am wasting time traveling to the door, just to have to backtrack.
Good Job!
Really liked this. My highscore was 850, which probably isn't all that good, but it took a while to get. Very smooth experience and the music and graphics both fit together very well.
I don't know if it's a bug or not, but when I move to the far right and it causes a rotation, it appears to rotate 270 degrees the opposite direction to get there are opposed to 90 degrees in the right direction. The other side doesn't exhibit this behavior. When that would happen it was a little disorienting and usually cause me to die.[Was using the Windows build]
Great entry and very enjoyable!
Very cool idea, but figuring out how to use all the operators available to you is very tricky. I would recommend have some progression of levels in the beginning where you introduce operators one at a time so the player has time to figure out exactly what everything does.
I really liked how it looked, but it was difficult to figure out what to do. I played for quite a while sucking things up and shooting(?) them out.
The art was really nice and I can tell you spent time on the sound effects (each individual person had there own things that they would be mumbling), but perhaps it would be helpful to explain the gameplay a little so that the player isn't so lost.
I really like this. Very cool idea and well executed!
Very clever game and fits the theme perfectly. Great job! I got to 14 several times, but after that it was really just a guess for me.
Also, you commented on my game that you couldn't play because you have a Mac, well there is now a Web build, so hopefully you will be able to play it.
Hopefully I can get a Mac build soon enough. I don't have access to a Mac right now, but porting will be as simple as switching to the MonoGame libraries. I might be able to get one in a couple days.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Seriously, getting feedback (good or bad) is one of the most rewarding parts of the Ludum Dare experience for me, so your comments are very appreciated.
@Zim the Fox - Yeah, I had about an hour left and was deciding between adding sound effects or some general polish. It would have been a close call for the sounds, so I went with the polish.
I'm thinking I'll probably make a post compo version that has some addition puzzles (anyone have any good ideas) and will feature a level editor that you can use to make your own puzzles.
Thanks again for the comments!
@AlecVonArx - Yeah, I'm thinking I will probably be making an expanded version of this in the future. The thing I'm struggling with is that the simple rules and mechanics are what works for it (at least I think). Without expanding upon the basic mechanics, how many more interesting levels can be made? The answer is probably more than I would think, but it will take me a while to find them.
One idea I had was a block (with a number) that can be pushed by the player. It has all the same properties and mechanics as the player (can use other blocks, must satisfy gate conditions, ect). These blocks would need to be used to solve puzzles. I'm really trying to figure out if this makes it too complex and if this addition would really add any more depth to the puzzle experience.
Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it!
I really like the graphics style a lot. The gameplay was also very enjoyable. Good job!
Really like this! Very cool idea and very fun. Definitely one my favorites so far. Great job!
Good job making 3 little games instead of 1!
The 1st and 2nd are my favorite, as I had a hard time controlling the 2nd game.
Score:31959
You also commented on my game about it not working for you because of your laptop. I just uploaded a new build that probably resolves your issue if you want to check it out.
I really liked it. Very simple idea and really works well with the 10 seconds limit. More levels are needed though!
I liked the game and the idea! Great job!
I found the blurry graphics detracted from the experience, at least for me. It just made it difficult to see which way the character was facing. Other than that, I enjoyed it!
I also got the message that the site does not exist.
Very good atmosphere and interesting idea. I played for a while, but I don't think I ever really made much progress. I died a lot :)
Really cool idea with the replication (I was hoping for that theme!), but was it really needed for anything? The clone that would pop out would typically die quickly and it was difficulty to control both of them at the same time without 1 or both of them dying.
Either way, good job! It was a fun little game!
Thanks all!
@Rialgar - Yeah, the upgrades were added in the last 2 hours of the compo and I was a little rushed. I also made it to where they only effect your current ship (for the damage and fire rate), but perhaps it should have effected all 3. Glad you liked it and I'm sure someone will beat your score :)
@Skully I think I may have targeted the wrong XNA profile. I'll check and see.
Very Awesome! Really great combination of music and art that really sets the environment perfectly. Also good use of the theme with the tools. Great job, I really liked this game. I even searched around after I beat it looking for some hidden easter egg or something, I think that's a sign that you did something right :)
Very good narration and the music tied in perfectly to the mood of the game. I also thought the dove level was really well done! Great job.
It was fun destroying the trees. The art and music were both really well done.
I did notice when my score got up to about 3000ish that it began to lag a bit, which resulted in my death.
Overall, good entry, I enjoyed it!
Great job! This game was really fun and a really great take on the theme. It was a very simple idea that was implemented really well and explained nicely. I really liked it!
I enjoyed this game a lot and thought you did a good job ramping up the difficulty. The music was also very enjoyable! Great job!
I really liked this entry. The animations of the character are really nice and the concept of the game is really good. I think the physics could use some work and jumping and moving didn't quite feel right, but overall it is a really nice job!
Pretty awesome and enjoyable game. I had a lot of fun playing it. My only complaint is that I thought the particle effects made it a little too busy and difficult to see the elements that mattered. Perhaps with more time spent playing it would have become less of an issue. Either way, really great entry!
Took me a while to figure out the controls and what I was actually trying to do, but once I did I was able to beat it.
It would be helpful if there was some kind of an indicator of the enemies health. I think they get darker, but I couldn't really tell and wasn't sure if I was doing any damage at first.
Sorry it anyone has been unable to get it to work, I forgot to mention the XNA and .NET requirements.
@Headmade - Yeah, I should probably add a method to skip a level, as some of them are pretty difficult.
Also, I'm hoping to have a web build at some point using JSIL.
